Charleston Race Week
On Sunday, race committees on all three inside circles executed two races in variable conditions for all one-design fleets. Classes on Circle 1 (Melges 20, J24, J22) completed eight races, (PHRF Inshore sailed seven races), Circle 2 (Melges 24, J70, VX One ) sailed seven races, Circle 3 (J/88, Melges 32, J/105, ORC D) all completed six races for the regatta. In the Offshore Racing Pursuit division distance courses were sailed for Non-Spinnaker, Spinnaker A, B, and C classes who enjoyed solid racing in a range of conditions.

The 28th edition of the "regatta like no other" came through for some 180 boats racing in sixteen classes, with multiple lead changes determining final places right up until the last race.

The Palmetto Cup, presented to the most competitive handicap fleet, went to Bottle Rocket, the Cheetah 30 sailed by a group of great friends - Jay Greenfield, Nick Johnstone and Nate Fast - who took two bullets to win class.

The Sportsmanship Award went to the Bermuda 40 Custom Yawl Lioness, owned, and skippered by Sheldon Haynie racing in Pursuit Spinnaker C.

5.5 Metre Alpen Cup At the 2024 5.5 Metre Alpen Cup at Riva del Garda, a second place in the first race of the day was enough for The Jean Genie (GBR 43, Peter Morton, Andrew Palfrey, Ruairidh Scott) to win with a race to space, the team's third win at the event in recent years.

After Friday's drama, New Moon III (BAH 25, Mark Holowesko, Christoph Burger, Peter Vlasov) put on a solid display to win the first race and then placed third in the next to moved up two places to second overall. Girls on Film (GBR 41, Louise Morton, Sam Haines, Andrew Mills) ended up third.

The final two races were sailed in a very shifty northerly, that shuffled the front of the fleet several times, but was nevertheless interesting racing. -- Robert Deaves

Scotty Dickson Wins 14th Career Ficker Cup
Long Beach's champagne conditions and superior racing by eight world class skippers over three days ended with Scotty Dickson claiming his 14th Ficker Cup over 24 years.

Scotty Dickson originally from New Zealand went 12 and 2 in the Double Round Robin dropping only one match in the semifinals against Australia's Cole Tapper. Dickson went on to sweep the finals against another New Zealand skipper, Megan Thomson.

Today's finals marked the end of a thrilling weekend for Long Beach, with the excitement of Ficker Cup yacht racing punctuated by the distant zoom of Indy Cars at the 49th Long Beach Grand Prix, which another Scott Dixon, veteran driver and fellow Kiwi took the checkered flag for his second career victory!

It's been a very busy event season in Long Beach and now the spotlight turns to the 59th Congressional Cup also hosted by Long Beach Yacht Club which runs from Wednesday April 24th through Sunday April 28th. The top three ranking Ficker Cup skippers, Scotty Dickson, Megan Thomson and Cole Tapper have qualified and move on to the Congressional Cup.

Spectators can watch the races live free from Belmont Veterans Memorial Pier at 39th Place & E. Ocean in Long Beach starting daily at 11:30AM and online at thecongressionalcup.com

As good as it gets - The Superyacht Cup
Superyacht Cup Almost three decades after it was first staged as an end-of-season jamboree for yachts and crews preparing to cross the Atlantic, the 2024 edition of Superyacht Cup Palma promises to be a cracker, says Phil Riley

Superyacht Cup Palma, Europe's longest-running superyacht regatta, is now gearing up to celebrate its 28th anniversary from June 19-22 in what may be a spectacular 2024.

'If you build it, they will come' - the now famous prophetic line from the 1989 film Field of Dreams that inspired farmer Kevin Costner to build a baseball diamond in his Iowa cornfields, which then attracted crowds to view a who's who of ghostly baseball stars.

Cup Spy April 22: Kiwis put in solid session in breeze gusting to 30kts
Emirates Team New Zealand started the new week with a courageous display of heavy air sailing in their new AC75, Taihoro.

They emerged with no apparent damage, despite pushing the AC75 at race pace in an offshore breeze that was recorded as gusting at over 30kts in several observation stations in the Predictwind system.

What happened in the Cup - April 21-22, 2024:

- INEOS Britannia - continued with set up on their new AC75 in Barcelona. This was their second day in this process.

- Alinghi Red Bull Racing - did not sail on Sunday, but had a successful light air sailing session on Saturday in their new AC75.

- Emirates Team New Zealand - sailed in heavy air out of Auckland. They are expected to keep sailing until early May, resuming in Barcelona in early July.

- American Magic - sailed paired AC40s all last week. Their AC75 is one of two yet to be revealed, it arrived at the base on March 26..

- Orient Express Racing Team - Their AC75 is the other yet to be revealed. It is to an Emirates Team NZ design.

- Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli - The Italian team had an awkward start to their sailing program, on April 20, with the AC75 pulling up just a minute or two into the session. However on the following day the Italians had a good sailing session, and should continue with their commissioning this week.

Maiden Wins Mcintyre Ocean Globe
Maiden UK (03) has won the McIntyre Ocean Globe Race taking first in IRC handicap rankings against a 14 strong fleet of very experienced and committed sailors. They have also been written into the history books as the first ever all-women crew to win an around the world yacht race.

The former Whitbread yacht, sailed by an all-female international crew has taken the coveted title after 153d 2h 16m 53s of racing around the world. Virtually none of the crew had previously faced such an epic challenge and only one had sailed in the Southern Ocean before.

They crossed the Royal Yacht Squadron, Cowes finish line at 10:52 UTC, 16th April, in a haze of excitement having sailed 6599 nm from Punta del Este on leg 4 of the OGR, making it look easy, when all knew it was not.

It has been a tense wait for the girls over the past few days to watch if second placed entrant on IRC, French yacht TRIANA, could reach the finish line early enough to beat them on handicap, but that is now impossible.

It's fitting that Maiden should take the McIntyre Ocean Globe-winning title with her poignant Whitbread history. Designed by Bruce Farr, the 58-foot aluminum hulled yacht came fourth in the 1981-82 Whitbread, known then as Disque D'Or 3. She was then renamed Stabilo Boss for the 1986-87 BOC single-handed challenge coming seventh. In 1987 she was bought by Tracy Edwards MBE, who made headlines in the 1989 Whitbread skippering the iconic yacht around the world with an all-female crew.

INEOS Britannia Reveal RB3 Before Dawn
INEOS Britannia Reveal RB3 The shutters opened at the INEOS Britannia base just after 5am on Saturday, and out into the moonlight under floodlight came the boat that all British fans hope will have the best chance of winning the Louis Vuitton 37th America's Cup in 173 years.

Codenamed RB3 for the past two-and-a-half years, the latest AC75 to be revealed is outlandishly stunning with an all-business paint job that accentuates the curvature of the hull form and tricks the eye. Detailing aplenty, it's a subtly different approach from what we've seen so far and represents the very best of design and build.

The most obvious talking point is the hull form. What the British have gone for is a step-on from their prototype boat 'T6' with a voluminous, integrated bustle in the bow with a small chine leading back along the keel-line to a razor-sharp edged lower bustle that stops a few feet from the stern.

The flaring at the bow is somewhere mid-way between the Kiwis and Italians. Ending the bustle before the transom leaves presumably the majority of the rudder mechanics above deck on the gantry so there's an aero trade-off with a considerable, but beautifully sculpted, stern gantry that screams Formula 1 design. The almost dead flat stern run off is an area unlikely to be touching water in flight - that's the thinking at least - and is similar to what we have seen elsewhere.

Coming to America
The city of New York is inextricably linked to the long history of solo ocean racing. Some years before anyone had really worked up the idea of racing solo around the globe, in 1957 English yachtsman Colonel Herbert 'Blondie' Hasler proposed a solo race across the Atlantic from Plymouth to New York.

And so on June 10th 1960 the Observer Singlehanded TransAtlantic race set off with five intrepid solo skippers starting off Plymouth, not all on the day. Racing the biggest boat in the fleet, the 40 footer Gypsy Moth III, English yachtsman Francis Chichester won, crossing the finish line in the approaches to New York after 40 days 12 hours and 30 minutes. Remarkably all five of the starters finished, French pioneer Jean Lacombe on his 21.5 footer Cap Horn reaching New York fifth after 74 days having started three days late and taking the most southerly route close to the Azores.

When he won the second edition of the OSTAR, contested in 1964, 32 year old French naval lieutenant Eric Tabarly ignited France's enduring national love affair with ocean racing and solo adventures at sea. On the 44ft ketch Pen Duick II, which he had built for the race, and following a carefully calculated route which was the result of his comprehensive pre-race weather studies, Tabarly finished into Newport three days before England's second placed Chichester. Tabarly had never used his radio during the race and for 19 days of his passage had no self-steering.

This historic transatlantic race has variously finished in New York, Newport Rhode Island and Boston over the years. New York offers so much, not least passing the Statue of Liberty and arriving in the 'city that never sleeps' docking against the Manahattan skyline. But the Hudson River is a very, very busy stretch of water to bring a race finish but bringing ocean racing right to the very heart of one of the world's richest and most dynamic cities has a huge appeal.

So it is both appropriate and exciting that The Transat CIC 2024 solo race from Lorient will finish into New York, just as the very first pioneering race did in 1960.
