Editor's note: I missed doing an issue for Tuesday, as a pet emergency took over my life. The good news is that my 14 year old Beagle will live to chase another squirrel (approx. 9000 fruitless forays so far). I encourage you to savor every moment of your furry friend's too-short life, and by all means spare a bit of change to donate to a rescue organisation.

There will be issues for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday this week, we return to the usual 2024 Tuesday-Wednesday-Thursday schedule next week.

Second placed Thomas Coville returns to a warm Brest welcome

Thomas Coville Charles Caudrelier, winner of the Arkea Ultim Challenge-Brest on Tuesday, may have been granted dream conditions for his victorious finish on Tuesday but thousands of well wishers braved the Breton drizzle to welcome home second placed Thomas Coville and his Soldebo Ultim Thursday afternoon.

Coville the French solo skipper of Sodebo Ultim 3 crossed the line off Brest to finish the Arkea Ultim Challenge-Brest at 13:42:40hrs UTC this Thursday afternoon, to take second place. His elapsed time is 53 days 1hr 12mins 40 seconds. On this first ever solo multi

Armel Le Cleac'h

Armel Le Cleac'h, winner of the 2016-17 Vendee Globe, maintained his record of finishing on the podium on all three of his solo round the world races so far when he crossed the finish line to complete the Arkea Ultim Challenge-Brest solo multihull race round the world race at 20:31:31hrs this Sunday evening to take third place sailing the ULTIM Banque Populaire XI.

Le Cleac'h's elapsed time for the course is 56 days 08hrs 1min 31secs. He finished 5 days 12hrs 53mins 49 secs after winner Charles Caudrelier.

Third this time is a just reward for his resilience, stamina and dogged determination rather than the proven abilities which have been his trademarks: sustaining high average speeds, wily, assured weather strategies complemented by a deep desire to win.

But while he has quietly revealed his disappointment and frustrations in recent days, tonight his abiding feeling is a keen sense of satisfaction that he and his technical team overcame a series of frustrating technical problems which marred the race of Le Cleac'h and the flagship Banque Populaire team whose skipper was widely tipped as a potential winner.

Le Cleac'h was forced to make two technical stops and only a few days ago had to repair a major leak on the foredeck of the boat which had filled the main hull with water. Of the six strong entry which started from Brest on Sunday 7th January he was the first to pit stop. On the way south he made a technical pitstop in Recife starting on January 14th to fix a foil problem, his tack fitting and damage to his pulpit.

Then, more painfully, on the return ascent of the Atlantic, on February 16th, he went into Rio, Brasil where he ceded second place to Thomas Coville who finished back in Brest on Thursday afternoon.

Xammar & Brugman Reign In Spain
Jordi Xammar and Nora Brugman (ESP) have been crowned 470 World Champions of 2024. After five days of competition in a variety of conditions on the Bay of Palma, the stormy conditions of Sunday meant no Medal Race to conclude the 470 World Championship in Mallorca. The Spanish team would have taken an 11-point advantage into the final race so there is no doubt they are the worthy champions of the week.

In the lighter breeze of the first three days the Japanese teams were unstoppable. When the breeze lifted to moderate 14-16 knots, Germany's Simon Diesch and Anna Markfort scored two bullets. The Spanish were always waiting in the wings, and in the end their consistency earned them a well deserved first world title.

Runner-up at the previous two Worlds, Brugman was delighted and relieved to have brought the title home, especially on home waters.

For a country that hadn't even qualified a place at the Olympic Games, the British squad really stepped up this week and took overall victory in the Nations Cup, based on the best two results from each country. Heathcote and Grube's silver was supported by a 9th place by training partners Martin Wrigley and Bettine Harris. The British won a tiebreak with the Japanese who finished as second best nation with Germany coming third. -- Andy Rice

Team Nika Seals The Deal At The Breezy 44Cup Calero Marinas
Four bullets from nine races was enough to secure Team Nika victory in the 44Cup Calero Marinas, opening event of the 2024 44Cup.

All four days of racing in the Canary Islands were in maximum conditions for the high performance owner-driver one design - in fact no one can remember an event requiring their smallest headsail, the J3, to be used in every race. Even for the final day (forecast to be the lightest), teams were still subjected to gusts into the high 20s blowing from the north, over Lanzarote's barren lunar landscape.

Aleph Racing had their best day yet, posting a 5-2-3. They were fighting back after two crew injuries earlier in the week. These spots were filled by Team Aqua's Aaron Cooper and Black Star Sailing Team coach Luke Molloy.

Peninsula Racing and Christian Zuerrer's Black Star Sailing Team also had good final days posting a 4-6-2 and a 3-5-7 respectively. Artemis Racing shone in today's first race when in the final moments they made great gains on the final run to come home second behind Team Aqua - their best result of the week.

The 2024 44Cup resumes over 8-12 May in Baiona, Spain.

BVI Spring Regatta added to Caribbean Maxi Multihull Series
As the multihull trend continues to spiral upwards with no end in sight to the number of boats enjoying the winter racing series in the Caribbean, the BVI Spring Regatta is excited to now be part of the inaugural Caribbean Maxi Multihull Series. The event expects several maxi multihulls to race in the 51st edition of the event April 1-7, 2024, and encourages boats who may be in the area after the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta to consider BVI Spring Regatta 2024 as part of the CMMS.

Organized by the International Maxi Association (IMA), the Caribbean Maxi Multihull Series (CMMS) comprises a mix of inshore and offshore races at the selected regattas, some of which have already been sailed this year:

Caribbean Multihull Challenge Race and Rally (St Maarten): 1-4 February
RORC Caribbean 600 (Antigua-Antigua): 19 February
St. Maarten Heineken Regatta (St Maarten): 29 February-3 March
BVI Spring Regatta & Sailing Festival (Tortola, BVI): 1-7 April

The CMMS was created by the IMA following its successful series in the Mediterranean for maxi monohulls. The series is open to maxi multihulls 60+ft (18.29m) LH. To qualify for the 2024 CMMS teams must compete in a minimum of two events. Boats that sail more can discard their lowest result. Teams that compete in more events are rewarded at the end of series scoring, and the winner will have their name engraved on a silver perpetual trophy presented by the IMA. -- Michelle Slade/BVISR

Registration still open for the Sailing Festival (April 1-4) and the BVI Spring Regatta (April 5-7)

Cup Spy: Stuffing it in Cagliari.. Waiting for wind in Barcelona
Three teams sailed in Cagliari and Barcelona. Except for Alinghi Red Bull Racing, which sailed their AC75, the other two teams sailed pairs of AC40s.

What happened in the Cup - February 27 and 28, 2024:

- INEOS Britannia - did not sail, they are on a three-week break, and must also resolve the issues arising from a lithium battery fire on their newest AC40 Sienna. Several of the team competed in SailGP Australia. The Emirates GBR team finished 7th in a ten-boat fleet.

- Alinghi Red Bull Racing - have returned to Barcelona. They splashed their AC75 on Friday for a series of commissioning checks ahead of restarting their AC75 program on Monday. Today, they sailed in moderate southerly winds and an on-axis direction with the wind.

- Emirates Team New Zealand - no sailing. Their AC75 has been left in Barcelona. One AC40-OD is en route to New Zealand. The other AC40 is being used as a LEQ12 test boat. The Kiwi sailing team finished third at the SailGP Sydney regatta over the weekend, finishing third. They have sailed on Tuesday in their AC40/LEQ12, but didn't sail Wednesday.

- American Magic - One of the team's co-helmsman - Tom Slingsby won the SailGP Sydney regatta beating Denmark and New Zealand in the Final. They sailed AC40s on Tuesday, and wanted to do the same on Wednesday - but someone forgot to book a breeze - and they didn't leave the dock.

- Orient Express Racing Team - the French America's Cup team competed in SailGP Sydney. They didn't make the three-boat final - and finished 4th overall.

- Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli - came out for a spectacular two-boat training session in Cagliari, they are the only team currently to have the ability to sail two mismatched boats in match racing. "It's interesting and initially I thought having two different boats may have been a bit of a downside to that and racing," co-helmsman Jimmy Spithill remarked after the session. "But it's actually been really good. Having boats with different strengths and weaknesses - whether it be maneuvering, or sometimes one boat has a performance edge. I think that'll be reality probably in the car very unlikely all about to be the same speed. So I think training wise, it's been good for us just to learn how to race a boat in a different configuration."

Defending Bacardi Cup Champions Kusznierewicz / Prada dominate Race 2
They came, they saw, they conquered was the story on day two of The 97th Bacardi Cup for defending Champions Mateusz Kusznierewicz/Bruno Prada.

From start to finish, Kusznierewicz/Prada exhibited unrelenting control over the sixty-six boat fleet, claiming victory with an impressive lead of one and a half minutes. Kusznierewicz acknowledged the race committee with a tip of his hat at the finish line.

Another perfect day in Miami of warm, sunny weather and an 8-10 knot south-easterly breeze. A super keen fleet forced two general recalls, eventually starting all clear under a black flag.

Another super solid result from Lars Grael/Ubiratan Matos, who add a fifth place to their 3rd from yesterday. Grael, a two-time Bacardi Cup winner (2015, 2014), has been a regular on the Star stage for many years and returns to the regatta after a five-year absence.

Bradley Sheppard/Quinton Gallon from Canada are the top placed U30 team in 24th overall, and are supported by the Bacardi Cup U30 program.

Racing continues on Wednesday, March 6, with a midday start. -- Luissa Smith

Changes afoot for next year's Selden Sailjuice Winter Series
If it ain't broke, don't fix it. So the saying goes. So after one of the most successful editions of the Selden Sailjuice Winter Series in its 15 year history, why consider changing anything? Co-organisers Simon Lovesey and Andy Rice are looking to move elements of the Series in a slightly different direction whilst wanting to keep the core of its success intact.

"Simon and I are always interested in where we can take things next with the Selden Sailjuice Winter Series," explained Andy. "Not all of the innovations we have brought in have been met with universal acclaim, far from it in fact. There was some resistance to introducing advance online entry via a website, rather than accepting cash and cheques on the day, believe it or not. Now it seems like a no-brainer.

"Moving from standard RYA PY handicap numbers and adopting the more radical Great Lakes numbers drew conspiracy theories that we were changing the numbers for dubious motives, but I think mostly people can see after a decade of Great Lakes experience that their numbers are producing very fair racing for many more classes than used to be the case.

"And GPS tracking of the races is not only there for entertainment purposes but is also proving to be a very useful back-up for cross-referencing the accuracy of finishing positions and resolving scoring queries."

Simon is drawing from various data sources including SailRacer GPS tracking to create an 'Old Boats Ranking', and is looking for broader support from the industry. "We're reaching out to the trade to back this initiative with prizes to help people upgrade their boats. Like Richard and his colleagues at Selden are saying, this has the potential to work for everyone in the sailing world."

If you'd like to find out more and get involved in this initiative, please email

Stan Pearson, the well-known Caribbean yachtsman and owner of Antigua Rigging has died at the age of 66

Stan Pearson Originally from New Zealand and a somewhat private man, his early life was something of an enigma to those that knew him in later life. He first came to notice as a senior crew member on NIRVANA in 1987. Richard Matthews from Oyster had chartered the yacht for the Fastnet and was deeply impressed with the capable New Zealander and his wife "Fliss". That year an Oyster 68 called THRILLER had been commissioned and Stan and his wife became the Captain and crew, arriving on the yacht in Antigua in 1990. At the time it was one of the larger yachts based there.

It was also about that time I first met Stan - I was introduced to him by his well-known moniker "Stan the Man". Stan was a mast / rigging expert and was dealing with the compression jacks on MARI-CHA 2 (later BRISTOLIAN). By now Stan had moved ashore and was building his rigging business and reputation. He aligned with FKG the well-known rig company in St Martin and made many contacts and friends in Camden during his frequent association with WAYFARER. There he met Steve Tofield (LYMAN and MORSE) who became a lifelong friend. Stan's business Antigua Rigging became fully established at the Catamaran Club and he was appointed as the service agent for both Oyster and Nautor Swan as well as becoming the representative of many marine parts suppliers.

During the many sailing events I attended in the Caribbean and Europe through the 90's Stan was usually present - we sailed together on numerous occasions including BRAVEHEART (Truly Classic 78) when Mark Stevens first became captain.

Although his health had been ailing, Stan's passing was sudden and unexpected. He was a sporting / betting man and Richard Matthews (who remained a close friend since they first met 1987) thought it inappropriate that Stan should choose to exit when he was 14 - 0 in debt with bottles of champagne owed. Stan was blessed with many good friends in Antigua - a number of whom were able to be with him in his final period. Appropriately his ashes will be scattered at the Superyacht Challenge in March. -- John Burnie
