Sliding fast on a perfect front and contemplating the Big South
Charles Caudrelier (Maxi Edmond de Rothschild) has opened a 70 miles lead on second placed Tom Laperche (SVR Lazartigue) as the Arkea Ultim Challenge-Brest's two pacemakers contemplate their rapid descent into the Southern Ocean, set to pass Tristan de Cunha tonight, making between 34 and 36 knots with some 1400 miles still to sail to pass the longitude of the solo ULTIM race round the world's first great Cape, the Cape of Good Hope.

Whilst Laperche, at 26, is set to experience the 'big south' for the first time, the endless grey and barren seas are a known quantity for double The Ocean Race winner Caudrelier. But it is the poetic Thomas Coville, just over 400 miles behind the two leaders, who is really relishing his return to the south.

"Sodebo is moving at 35 knots on very flat seas. The sun comes up out of the water. This means something very important on a round the world. That means that we are heading east. We now have this incredible scene where the sun rises right in front of us." He smiled on his early morning video.

After negotiating the west side of the Saint Helena high pressure zone, the former solo round the world record holder (49 days and 3 hours in 2016) has made his turn to the left.

Ranking at January 18th at 3:00 AM
1. Charles Caudrlier, Maxi Edmond de Rothschild, 18508 nm to finish
2. Tom Laperche, SVR Lazartigue, 87 nm to leader
3. Thomas Coville, Sodebo Ultim 3, 530 nm
4. Anthony Marchand, Actual Ultim 3, 1608 nm
5. Armel Le Cleac'h, Banque Populaire, 1830 nm
6. Eric Peron, Adagio, 2671 nm

Tradewinds kick in on day 11: RORC Transatlantic Race
The RORC Transatlantic Race enters the eleventh day, with the Farr 100 Leopard 3 (MON) skippered by Chris Sherlock, leading the monohull fleet 200 miles from Camper & Nicholsons Port Louis Marina in Grenada. PAC52 Warrior Won (USA) is estimated to be winning overall under IRC, with Leopard second and Richard Fromentin's JPK 1180 Cocody (FRA) third. Normal service has resumed for all of the 18 boats still racing in the RORC Transatlantic Race, with solid tradewinds producing double-digit boat speed for the entire fleet.

The race leaders 17 January at 1400 UTC: Monohull Line Honours & IRC SZ - Leopard 3 (MON). IRC Overall & IRC Zero - Warrior Won (USA), IRC One - Cocody (FRA), Class40 Sensation Extreme (FRA), and IRC Two Handed Tigris (GBR).

Multihull
Adrian Keller's Nigel Irens 84 Allegra (SUI) has 550nm miles to go to cross the finish line. While the overall win after MOCRA time correction for Allegra is out of reach, the team can still make the podium if they can make up about 8.5 hours time correction on MOD70 Limosa (FRA).

IRC Overall
Chris Sheehan's PAC52 Warrior Won (USA) has lit the blue touch paper. Warrior Won has found its sweet spot, barrelling downwind in a ball of spray averaging 17 knots of boat speed and surfing up to 25 knots. Warrior Won is 400 miles from Grenada with a healthy overall lead after IRC time correction.

Farr 100 Leopard 3 (MON), skippered by Chris Sherlock is revelling in the tradewinds, but in terms of winning overall after IRC time correction, Leopard doesn't have the runway left with 200 miles to go.

18ft Skiffs: NSW champion out of action
John 'Woody' Winning celebrated by his team after winning the NSW Championship one month ago. Photo by SailMedia. Click on image for photo gallery.

18ft Skiffs Last Sunday's Race 1 of the Australian 18ft skiff Championship resulted in a well-deserved win for the Andoo team of John Winning Jr, Seve Jarvin and Peter Harris, and the 2023 JJ Giltinan champions are favourites to add the national title to an already impressive record, but the big surprise to come from the race was the late withdrawal of NSW champion John 'Woody' Winning as skipper of Yandoo.

Less than an hour before the start of Sunday's race, 'Woody' informed officials that he would not be skippering Yandoo in the race and for, at least, the remainder of the championship due to a painful hip problem which has deteriorated over the past few months.

According to 'Woody', "I was having trouble during the recent NSW championship, but hopeful that I could hang on until the end of the season before having an operation."

"On Sunday, I was hopeful that I could sail but realised that the problem was worse than I thought and fortunately Micah Lane was able to fill in for me at late notice."

"My surgeon is presently on leave but I expect to be able to have an operation in February to relieve some of the pain, and allow me to get back in the boat. Regardless of the outcome, it's unlikely I will be able to contest the 2024 JJ Giltinan Championship in March."

With 'Woody' out of action, his son John Winning Jr and the Andoo crew were near faultless in taking out the first race of the nationals in a South East wind ranging from 10-20 knots on Sydney Harbour.

Micah Lane, a former Australian 18ft skiff champion, did a great job filling-in for 'Woody', and along with Yandoo's regular crew of Fang Warren and Lewis Brake, was leading the fleet before a wild capsize ruined their chance with just four legs of the course still to be completed.

Entries open for Cowes Week 2024
At 198 years young, Cowes Week is the world's longest running regatta. It remains one of the pre-eminent and best-known events in the global sailing calendar. In 2024 the team hope to welcome around 500 boats racing in up to 36 different classes and the organisers have their sights set on even greater participation over the next couple of years leading up to the bicentenary of the event in 2026.

Super Early Bird entries are available until Sunday 11th February. Competitors can then make an Early Bird entry until Sunday 28th April or a Standard Entry until Sunday 14 July, and last-minute entries can still be made right up to the eve of the Regatta. Both regatta and daily entries are available.

This unique event sees boats of all types competing for some of the world's most prestigious sailing silverware over a week's worth of races either from the famous Royal Yacht Squadron start line with its cannons, or from a committee vessel elsewhere in the Solent, but every class will have a variety of starts or finishes on the RYS line.

The Solent can be a busy patch of water during the week long event but that's all part of what makes this iconic sailing event so different and allows for the making of so many cherished sailing memories of races won, or nearly won.

Competing boats range from family owned and crewed day boats to professionally crewed sleek Class Zero big boats. What unites them all is the Corinthian spirit of the sport and the opportunity to mix on equal terms ashore in the Cowes marinas, shops and bars, or at one of the many organised parties.

Racing starts on Saturday 27th July 2024, and the event culminates with an overall prize giving on Friday 2nd August.

Entry opens for Nautilus Marine Insurance Sydney Harbour Regatta

Sydney Harbour Regatta Middle Harbour Yacht Club (MHYC) welcomes all sailors to the New Year and entry into its 2024 Nautilus Marine Insurance Sydney Harbour Regatta, due to take place from 2-3 March 2024, with another competitive weekend of autumn racing across multiple classes and divisions.

The Notice of Race is now online where you can also enter for the 19th running of the largest keelboat regatta in NSW which was introduced in 2006.

New in 2024 is the inaugural FarEast 28R National Championship. A quality Australia-wide fleet exists in this fun and fast Simonis Voogd One-Design class. Excitement is the key factor. Downwind in big conditions has caused a few heart stopping moments for crews and spectators alike and there is often less than half a bowsprit between finishers in races.

Following a successful first Australian J/99 Class Championships at the Sydney Harbour Regatta in 2023, Jules Hall will return with Disko Trooper to defend their title.

The competitive Sydney 38 One-Design class will again hold its NSW Championship as part of the SHR. Whether the determined team of Peter Byford and David Hudson (Conspiracy) can be beaten remains to be seen. MHYC's Peter Sorensen (Advanced Philosophy) came close last year. He led into the final day, but Conspiracy accelerated to lift the title.

Joining the Sydney 38s for offshore windward-leeward races starting and finishing in the Harbour will be the Super 50 group, with a number of TP52s expected. The Open IRC divisions will race inshore this year. -- Di Pearson/MHYC media

San Diego Yacht Club and Newport Harbor Yacht Club Set the Stage for the Islands Race
San Diego, California: The highly anticipated Islands Race, hosted by the San Diego Yacht Club (SDYC) and Newport Harbor Yacht Club (NHYC), is set to unfold on February 9-10, 2024. Sailors are eager to take on the challenge of this competitive offshore race, covering 142 nautical miles around Santa Catalina and San Clemente Islands.

The race, renowned for its overnight endurance test, starts off of Point Fermin in San Pedro, CA and finishes off the coast of Point Loma in San Diego, CA. This annual coastal race typically attracts over 30 boats, setting the stage for a variety of competitive fleets.

The Islands Race serves as a crucial tune up race for the upcoming offshore season, particularly as a lead in to SDYC's Puerto Vallarta Race two weeks later. Many of the teams racing to Mexico will use the Islands Race to measure themselves against their competition and prep their boats for the 1,000 miles race to PV. The Islands Race format remains consistent with past years, and places a strong emphasis on safety protocols to ensure the well-being of all participants.

Spectators can follow the race through the YB Trackers, providing real-time updates on the positions and progress of the competing boats.
