Swan One Design Worlds 10-14 October

Swan One Design Worlds All four One Design classes gather again for the Swan One Design Worlds in Marina di Scarlino, Italy, a finale which will also determine the destination of The Nations League title as well as the world titles in each fleet.

37 teams will meet at the Marina di Scarlino, attracting athletes from over 25 nations, representing the whole world. Once again the most famous sailors of the moment will sail the waters of the Gulf of Follonica, to see not only the world titles of the Swan One Design classes awarded, but also to see the winners of The Nations League 2023 circuit celebrated.

The Swan One Design Worlds will see four days of racing starting on Wednesday 11 October which will determine the world champions in the ClubSwan 50, ClubSwan 42 and ClubSwan 36 classes.

A coastal race is planned during the regatta which could include iconic local landmarks such as the islands of Cerboli and Palmaiola off Elba's east coast as racing marks, all against the backdrop of the famed Isle of Montecristo.

The handicap-racing fleet (racing under ORC) will dispute three coastal racing days featuring the performance cruiser rating fleet.

The event also marks the decider of The Nations League 2023, with all to play for. Marcus Brennecke's Hatari, whose tactics are being called by Markus Wieser (GER) tops the ClubSwan 50 table though Andrea Lacorte's Vitamina (ITA) is within striking distance, while Pedro Vaquer Comas' Nadir (ESP) and Giangiacomo Serena di Lapigio's G Spot (MON), where Michele Paoletti acts as tactician, hold only narrow leads in the ClubSwan 42 and ClubSwan 36 classes respectively.

Beat, Bash and Bounce to Cape Town
The long, choppy upwind beat to Cape Town is proving challenging for the crews of the McIntyre Ocean Globe. With the calm of the doldrums a distant memory, the relentless South Easterlies means the yachts are moving, but it's taking its toll on bodies and brains.

The crews are also under pressure to get into Cape Town to ensure adequate time for maintenance, provisioning, and recuperation before the start of the challenging Southern Ocean Leg to Auckland, starting November 5th. The OGR Notice of Race requires yachts to have a mandatory minimum four-day stopover in port, meaning they need to arrive by 14:00 local time on November 1st to ensure starting Leg 2 with the rest of the fleet.

This deadline is certainly playing on some minds with fluky, tricky winds about to become a trademark of the 'traditional' tradewinds.

Jean d'Arthuys, skipper onboard the Swan 53, Triana FR (66) admits that the conditions are more brutal than he expected.

"Everyone is getting tired going upwind now for ten days, it's very uncomfortable as you know. This leg is longer and harder than we thought. It's not good for morale." said Jean.

There is 700 nm between Sterna SFA (42) the tailenders of the middle pack and former Whitbread winner L'Esprit d'équipe FR (85) who is leading the same pack. They continue to forge South but might well encounter lighter winds in the coming days if they remain on a similar heading.

Sydney to Auckland Ocean Race make for the corner
Four of the five competitors elected to go the Southern side of the Rhumb Line in the dash to the top of New Zealand. By and large, you'd have to say it paid. Painkiller, the Bavaria 51 from the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron was the one exception, but they may have been on a slightly different mission, namely fishing, so that could well explain that.

The crews report that those affected have got past the early seasickness, and are now charging hard. Frantic would be the one to have done the most in that regard, and is all over the significantly larger Antipodes. The two vessels representing the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia are virtually neck and neck, with the early TP52 holding on to the slenderest of leads for now, and just at that.

As expected, the wind abated somewhat and went into a Southerly to Sou'sou'westerly trend and something in the order of 8-15 knots, accompanied by a Sou'westery swell of some 3m or so. This will be advantageous to drive the boats back up to the Rhumb Line and their turning mark atop New Zealand (just look out for the Manawatāwhi/Three Kings Islands), before they make down the East coast of the North Island and into home at Auckland, which for the leaders could well be later tomorrow.

On Friday the winds are expected to strengthen once more for that predominantly Nor'west direction, before clocking back left to the Sou'west under a new line of low pressure. You would think Intiy from the host club, the Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club will be best placed to capitalise on this. The Two-Handed crew have some ground to get back off the full crewed Mayfair from the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron that is around 242nm ahead of them. They have done just over 200nm in the last 24 hours, so that is commendable for short-handed and a 36-footer at that.

Double Mixed Offshore World Championship
Taking 2 days, 23 hours, 46 minutes and 14 seconds to complete the 364 miles of the route which, starting from Taranto, took them first to round the Greek island of Merlera and then to cross the Ionian Sea towards Policoro, before to return to the city born with the name of Taras, Cecilia Zorzi and Matteo Sericano (Team Italy) won the Double Mixed Offshore World Championship, an event officially recognized by World Sailing, organized by Difesa Servizi S.p.A. and SSi Events, in collaboration with the Marina Militare and with the support of the Municipality of Taranto, Molo Sant'Eligio, the Circolo Velico Policoro and the local Section of the Lega Navale Italiana.

Sericano and Zorzi, who was at the second consecutive success in the event after the one obtained in Portoros in 2022, prevailed in perhaps the most competitive edition of this regatta: the ten competing crews, representing as many Nations and three continents, sailed together for at least two thirds of the regatta, which ended in favor of Team Italy during the approach to the Policoro mark.

Coming second were the fresh winner of the European women's double offshore title Ellie Driver and George Kennedy: the two British sailors, representing the colors of Team Great Britain/Chilli Pepper, were engaged for a long time in a tight duel with Zorzi-Sericano who, at the finish line, they paid a delay of 1 hour and 3 minutes.

Third place went to Team Scotland (Maggie Adamson and Finlayson Calanach), who arrived in Taranto about forty minutes after Team Great Britain/Chilli Pepper.

With gaps quantifiable in the order of minutes, Team South Africa, Team Spain, Team Norway, Team Argentina, Team Poland and Team Germany, the last of the crews to reach the finish line, completed the arrivals. Ten classified, having withdrawn due to an error in reading the route, was Team Sweden.

Despite a flat economy, boat builders and marine professionals from around the world turned out in record numbers to attend IBEX 2007, held Oct. 10-12 in Miami Beach, organizers reported in a statement yesterday.

The verified attendance numbers indicate a slight increase of 4,570 attendees from 67 countries in 2007 compared to 4,509 in 2006, according to organizers. The attendance figure does not include the individuals/staff from the 900 exhibiting companies, which would make the total verified attendance 8,709 for IBEX 2007. IBEX conforms to IFBSO (International Federation of Boat Show Organisers) reporting standards, organizers stated.

IBEX 2007 hosted almost 900 exhibitors, which included manufacturers and suppliers from six continents, and more than 25 countries.

This morning, Coca-Cola Europacific Partners signed an agreement at its Martorelles (Barcelona) plant, through which the company becomes a sponsor of the 37th America's Cup - the world's oldest and most important nautical event to be held in Barcelona in 2024. This alliance makes Coca-Cola the Global Soft Drinks Partner of the 37th edition of the America's Cup.

Coca-Cola has always been present in the most important sporting events in the world, in different disciplines. Beyond sports sponsorship, the company now partners with this competition to develop initiatives within the framework of its sustainability strategy. In this sense, during the regatta months, Coca-Cola will promote the use of returnable glass as a more sustainable and reusable container. In addition, it will also promote beach cleaning actions through its 'Mares Circulares' program, which began in 2018 and has already managed to recover more than 1,800 tons of waste in Spain.

The agreement also consolidates and reaffirms Coca-Cola's relationship with Barcelona, a key city for the group at an international level, which has one of the largest production plants in Europe (located in Martorelles) and which saw the birth of the first Coca-Cola bottle in Spain in 1953, from the factory located on Almogàvers Street.

The signing of the agreement brought together Grant Dalton, CEO of the 37th America's Cup, and Francesc Cosano, General Manager of Coca-Cola Europacific Partners Iberia. When signing the agreement, both executives highlighted the economic and social impact that the competition will have on the city, the region, and the country, with the involvement of citizens and local entities, and the importance of sustainability in the management of an event of this magnitude.

The 37th America's Cup will take place between August and October 2024 in the beating heart of beautiful Barcelona, the capital of Catalonia and one of the most visited cities on planet Earth.

Liam Shanahan Senr
Liam Shanahan Senr Liam Shanahan Senr was widely known in the sailing community as a determined offshore racing and cruising owner-skipper and a pillar of the National Yacht Club in Dun Laoghaire, both as a longtime Club Trustee and a racing and sea-going achiever. He and his family regularly added to the club's annual haul of significant trophies won locally, nationally and internationally. And he did this through sailing skills started while working abroad, and then honed in Dublin Bay racing, ISORA competition, and offshore majors such as the Dun Laoghaire to Dingle and Round Ireland races.

He was the personification of success achieved through shrewd career choices, a willingness to travel to further his work objectives, an ability to work very hard indeed, and a determination that - in time - he and his growing family's remarkable life would be firmly Ireland-centric.

He was representative of the best of modern Ireland, as he was of that generation of specialised qualifications which had to accept that a period working internationally - and working with exceptional concentration wherever he found himself with a project in hand - would be required in order to fulfil his long-term ambition of living comfortably beside Dublin Bay in a permanent family home and running his own high-powered international business from a South Dublin office complex.

Consequently, for those of us who didn't get to know him until he started to make his mark on the ISORA scene in the 1970s, there was inevitably a slight sense of the lone wolf about Liam. It was a very positive thing, but there was this inescapable awareness of a canny and determined eye on the distant horizon, and a willingness to take unorthodox action.
