Bermuda Gold Cup Through Quarter-Finals With Tropical Storm On Horizon
In a thrilling match that saw a tiresome combined 24 tacks in the span of about two and a half minutes, Harry Price's (AUS) Down Under Racing Team defeated Eric Monnin's Capvis Swiss Match Racing Team, 3-2, to advance to the Semifinal Round of the 71st Bermuda Gold Cup.

Price, who finished third at the Bermuda Gold Cup in 2019, joins multiple winners Johnie Berntsson's (SWE) Berntsson Racing Team, Taylor Canfield's (USA) Stars+Stripes Team USA and Ian Williams' (GBR) Chinaone.Ningbo team in the next round. The three veterans combined to go 10-1 in the quarterfinals, which included Berntsson winning four races to get the requisite three points to advance.

Instead of building on the momentum of an exciting day of racing, the Bermuda Gold Cup is being postponed for two days due to the threat of Tropical Storm Philippe. The Bermuda Weather Service issued a bulletin this evening stating that the closest point of approach to Bermuda within the next 72 hours (three days) is forecast to be 31 nautical miles to the west/northwest at 12:00 pm on Friday, Oct. 6, with forecast wind strengths of 35 to 45 knots.

Given the forecast, Principal Race Officer David Campbell-James completed the rounds robin and then rolled into the quarterfinals. A total of 40 races were held in an easterly wind of 12 to 15 knots on Hamilton Harbour.

Racing has been cancelled for Thursday and Friday due to the impending storm. The top four teams will be back at Royal Bermuda Yacht Club on Saturday morning in the hope of sailable conditions. -- Sean McNeill

Match 4: Chinaone.Ningbo d. Borch Racing Team, 3-0

All the best bit - Nautor Swan
Nautor Swan Elegance is a major preoccupation for the top brass at Nautor and when they began to design their new flagship Swan 108, one of the project's primary objectives was to produce the most beautiful maxi Swan to date

Like every new model we produce, throughout the design and build process we spend a great deal of time looking at data, drawings and renderings and the Swan 108 was no exception. But when she came out of the mould for the first time we knew we had something special,' says Nautor Group CEO Giovanni Pomati.

It is difficult to think of a time when the Finnish builders haven't been busy, but in recent years and despite the recent global challenges, the rate of production has ramped up with new models streaming into a comprehensive range that is constantly evolving. Naturally, evolution is no accident for a company that has been producing luxury offshore yachts for 57 years, neither is their reputation for leading by example. But the need to produce elegant yachts has been an underlying constant as well throughout this time.

Vasco Serpa wins the inaugural edition of the Clube Naval de Cascais Invitational Cup
The first edition of the Clube Naval de Cascais Invitational Cup took place from September 29th to October 1st. The inaugural edition featured eight teams from five clubs from 5 different countries. The race was contested in the J70 class with the boats provided by the organization and the format was that of a league, where all teams did a first initial qualification called Round Robin followed by semi-finals and the final.

For the final phase, the four teams, representing Clube Naval de Cascais, by Vasco Serpa, Royal Gothenburg Yacht Club, by Per Croner, Turkish Offshore Racing Club, by Alp Dogluoglu and Nyländska Jaktklubben, by Martin Estlander, found a race area with magnificent conditions with a wind of 8 knots from the Northwest with the beach and the iconic Santa Marta lighthouse as a backdrop. It took two races for Vasco Serpa, Diogo Machado Pinto, Pedro Costa Alemão and Diogo Pereira to win the final phase with two consecutive bullets.

Martin Estlander's Finnish team ended in second, with Lourenço Mateus, Sebastião Ramirez and Gonçalo Castro Nunes with two second places in the final races. The lowest place on the podium went to Per Croner with Henrique Brites, Luis Pinheiros, Manuel Macedo and Francisco Pinheiro de Melo.

The second edition of the Clube Naval de Cascais Invitational Cup will take place from the 4th to the 6th of October 2024. In the first edition, the Club also had 3 junior teams invited from its Race Teams, which were led by Olympic sailors Carolina Joao and Santiago Sampaio.

Spinnaker Design Technical Brief In Seahorse Magazine
UK Sailmakers is excited to once again feature a sail design technical brief in Seahorse Magazine, known for its coverage of elite sailboat racing and cutting-edge sailing technologies. You can explore it in the October edition of Seahorse Magazine, available in print or online here.

Our team of writers, led by Buttons Padin, unravels the mystique behind designing asymmetrical spinnakers by tapping into the expertise of three UK Sailmakers’ top designers: Pat Considine, Geoff Bishop, and Stuart Dahlgren. They emphasize that spinnaker design hinges on two key factors: the boat’s characteristics and the intended style of sailing.

The specifics of the boat, including its type (high-performance, displacement, one-design), precise measurements, and the planned sailing style (IRC, ORC, offshore, coastal and professional vs. Corinthian), form the foundation of asymmetrical spinnaker design.

The article spotlights three essential data points that wield significant influence over a sail’s performance and rating:

1. The point-to-point distance between where the spinnaker will be tacked (on a sprit or a lowered pole) and the max height for the halyard.

2. The mid-girth (SMG) luff to leech measurement, expressed as a percentage of the foot length.

3. The trim position for the clew in terms of height off the deck and where the sheet will lead.

Arkea Ultim Challenge - Brest
On January 7, qualified sailors will attempt a challenge which has not yet been achieved in the world of sailing: a solo round-the-world race on a giant Ultim multihull. Preparations are stepping up all the time as the competitors are now preparing to compete in two races. This week is the bite sized, sprint, the 24H Ultim, a short, intense warm up for the Transat Jacques Vabre - Normandie Le Havre.

"Since no one has ever competed on a race like this it's difficult to know exactly what the preparation should be like," explains Tom Laperche (SVR-Lazartigue).

"We are all getting ready to climb a mountain that is even bigger than anything we have done before," says Armel Le Cleac'h (Maxi Banque Populaire XI).

"It seems incredible to say that what we are going to try is actually even possible," smiles Anthony Marchand (Actual Ultim 3). Since the end of the French holidays, the skippers and their teams have been busy. They have all put their multihulls back into the water and are making many training sails and sessions - sometimes together - in order to optimize the settings and look after all the smallest details

This week they compete on the 24H Ultim (speed runs and a 500 miles loop two handed). It is a good way to check in before the Transat Jacques Vabre - Normandy Le Havre. The boats can be seen up close and personal on the quays of Le Havre from October 20 to 29 before the big start and the 7,000 miles (3,780 km) to travel to Martinique.

Then it's straight back to France for the final preparations for the Arkea Ultim Challenge - Brest.

The six competitors:
Charles Caudrelier (Maxi Edmond de Rothschild)
Thomas Coville (Sodebo Ultim 3)
Tom Laperche (SVR - Lazartigue)
Armel Le Cleac'h (Banque Populaire XI)
Anthony Marchand (Actual Ultim 3)
Eric Peron (ADAGIO) - subject to qualification

Cup Spy : A 'really productive' foil testing session for USA extends into early evening
It appears that American Magic were the only team to have sailed on Monday out of Barcelona.

The US team sailed both their AC40s in a paired testing session which was geared towards wingfoil testing - with one AC40 - Magic - sporting a fourth new test foil - their last allowed on their allocation under the class rules.

According to the AC37 Joint Recon team there were also some modifications to the other test foil fitted to the port side foil arm of a second AC40 - America.

Coach Tom Burnham was happy with the day. "First of all, we had to delay a bunch today because it was quite light. But it turned into an amazing day out there, it was really great. And here we are back at the dock at 730 at night, so almost sunrise sunset here. So it's been a really productive day," he told the AC37 Joint Recon Team.

The day consisted of some straight line testing with some maneuver testing at the end of the session. "It was a was a really productive day today", Burnham said.

"We can get different conclusions about which foils like which boat speeds, so some foils like to go faster than others and some like to go higher and slower. So we're just trying to figure out the sweet spot of each of the different foils and, and try and figure out the balance of which one will go best around the whole racetrack. And then that's part of what we're looking for in the maneuvers as well - it's not just get the straight line performance, but also the maneuvering performance of these foils."

Fire in Falmouth Harbour Antigua

Fire in Falmouth Harbour Antigua
The Royal Ocean Racing Club received news of a severe fire in Falmouth Harbour, Antigua on October 3rd. This has caused the closure of several well-known restaurants, cafes and businesses in the proximity of the Antigua Yacht Club (AYC). Commodore of the AYC Franklyn Braithwaite has confirmed that no one was injured and the AYC buildings are unaffected by the fire. The RORC sends best wishes to the owners and staff of the businesses that have been affected and hopes that they will be back in business for the RORC Caribbean 600.

The regatta schedule is unaffected by this terrible fire. Entries from the world-over are coming in for the 15th edition of the RORC Caribbean 600 which will also feature the 2nd edition of the RORC Nelson's Cup Series.

The RORC is working with the Antigua Yacht Club and the Antigua & Barbuda Government, along with our sponsors, partners and volunteers to host a special 15th edition of the RORC Caribbean 600. -- Louay Habib
