Medals decided as no more racing at Mar Menor Finn World Masters
The 2021 Finn World Masters on Mar Menor, Murcia, Spain, concluded on Friday with no more races possible. With a difficult forecast the fleet was sent out in the hope of one final race, but after a brief hope was dashed, racing was abandoned for the day.
Valerian Lebrun, from France, had already secured the championship but went out anyway as he 'was here for fun'. The 2019 European Masters Champion, Filipe Silva, from Portugal secured second overall, while the top home nation sailor, David Terol, placed third. These three were also the top three Masters for 40-49 year olds.
In the Grand Masters category, Laurent Hay, from France took the title he last won in 2017, from the Dutch pair of Peter Peet and Bas de Waal.
Greg Wilcox, from New Zealand, upgrading his old Finn for a modern charter boat this week, performed beyond his expectations to win the Grand Grand Masters, from France's Marc Allain des Beauvais, from France, and former double World Masters Champion, John Greenwood.
Another former World Masters Champion from way back in 1988, Hans Fatzer, from Switzerland, won the Legends category in an incredible 35th overall for the over 70s, from Henk de Jager and Filip Willems, both from The Netherlands.
Formula Kite Worlds
The US's Daniela Moroz closed out a remarkable five titles in a row at the Formula Kite World Championships on the Italian island of Sardinia, coming from behind in the finals shootout on the sparkling Gulf of Oristano, to seize the coveted crown.
France's Theo de Ramecourt entered the medal race final in pole position, but took several attempts in utterly engrossing competition to secure the bullet that gave him the first world title he craved.
Both athletes were completely elated by their triumphs after five days of intensely-tight racing on the glorious track off Torregrande, in the first International Kiteboarding Association (IKA) Formula Kite Worlds of the Olympic cycle.
The edge-of-the-seat drama of the finals came after 138 athletes—89 men and 49 women from 34 countries and six continents—lined up to fight for the IKA world titles after a two-year break because of the pandemic. It is the biggest kitefoil fleet assembled, courtesy of burgeoning worldwide interest because of the Olympics.
The Formula Kite Worlds in Torregrande, supported by the Region of Sardinia and the City of Oristano, showcased an exciting format for the climactic battles that crowned the men's and women's world champions.
America's Cup: Spain, Ireland and Saudi Arabia firm up as possible hosts
Valencia has withdrawn from the race to host the 37th America's Cup - but Spain is still very much in it.
International yachting sources have confirmed that a second Spanish bid is being made, dampening some of the rumours doing the rounds in sailing circles that the Saudis are at the front of the queue with a big-money bid to hold the regatta in Jeddah.
Team New Zealand's announcement of the new one-design AC40 yacht that will help expand pathways into the main event, particularly for women, also contained a largely overlooked line. It said the 37th America's Cup will be a multi-challenger event - effectively closing the door on the proposed one-on-one challenge at Cowes between Team NZ and Ineos Team UK.
So Spain (probably Barcelona), Cork in Ireland and Jeddah remain potential venues, one of whom is likely to be named on Friday. -- Paul Lewis
Victory for Maxi Jena at enlarged Venice Hospitality Challenge

The annual Venice Hospital Challenge grew a scale larger this year with an increased fleet of 16 maxi yachts. As usual the race course was set in the magnificent, unique setting of the San Marco and Guidecca canals, with Venice's famous Piazza San Marco (St Mark's Square), its Basilica and the Palazzo Ducale as its backdrop.
This was the eighth edition of the event, organised by the Yacht Club Venezia with the support of the International Maxi Association, the officially-recognised body that oversees and promotes maxi yacht racing globally. The Venice Hospitality Challenge ties together maxi yacht racing with many of Venice's world-famous hotels, such as the Gritti Palace, Cipriani and Hotel Danieli.
This year it formed part of the celebrations marking the 1600th birthday of the water-born city.
On the congested start line, it was Maxi Jena - Sina Centurion Palace led by Slovenian skipper Milos Radonjic, that got away cleanest. From here the 80ft Andrej Justin design hung on, despite competition from longer potentially faster entries, such as the Furio Benussi-skippered 100ft Arca SGR, to maintain her lead to the finish line which she crossed afer roughly one hour of racing.
Top International Maxi Association yacht to finish was the Slovenian Reichel/Pugh 87, Way of Life (ex Morning Glory), skippered by two time Finn Olympian Gasper Vincec, which came home second behind Maxi Jena. IC37 Class Signs Brokerage Agreement with Thoroughbred Yacht Sales
In just a few short years, the IC37 class has reshaped the landscape of big-boat sailing. As the chosen class for the Rolex New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup and the Canada's Cup, two of the world top sailing trophies, and the preferred one-design for top Corinthian sailors in North America and Europe, the 37-foot Mark Mills design has carved out a sizeable niche in the sport. To help the class take the next step, and equal some of the great one-design keelboats in the history of sailing, the IC37 Class Association has signed an exclusive brokerage partnership with Thoroughbred Yacht Sales, a leading source for high-performance raceboats for more than 30 years, with more than $100 million in total sales.
"We want to thank Harry Melges, Andy Burdick, and the entire team at Melges Performance Sailboats for their considerable contribution to the creation of the IC37 and development of the IC37 Class Association," said New York Yacht Club Commodore Christopher J. Culver, a devoted IC37 sailor. "With a 20-boat fleet at the New York Yacht Club and the further construction of 15 private boats, the IC37 Class is ready for the next phase in its international growth in partnership with Thoroughbred Yacht Sales."
The IC37 class was created in 2018 by the New York Yacht Club in partnership with industry leaders Mills Design, North Sails and Melges Performance Sailboats.
Maiden Regatta Success for Moat at first Ibiza JoySail Regatta
Racing at their first regatta since acquiring the boat, the crew of the Swan 115, Moat were crowned winners of the inaugural Ibiza JoySail regatta today.
With the happy new owner steering the team which was led by skipper Nicolas Gonzalez with round-the-world race and America's Cup winner Juan Vila as navigator went into the final day of racing tied on points with the YD 120 Bliss, but a lack of wind on the final day meant there was no opportunity for a deciding contest to separate the two.
After two impressive races around the stunning coastlines of Ibiza and Formentera both adjacent islands each wearing the beautiful hues of Autumn in the Med, with the two boats locked on the same points tally for a first and a second apiece it is Moat that win overall based on aggregated corrected time.
The Moat crew took line honours in both Friday and Saturday's race and looked to be growing in confidence on the newly named and recently purchased Swan 115.
The event opened on Thursday in the Bay of Palma, with the fleet making their way to Marina Ibiza for a series of coastal races followed by an exciting evening programme.
After the unqualified success of this first event, Ibiza JoySail look forward to welcoming entrants to the beautiful Balearic islands in the future for a record-breaking regatta. -- Andi Robertson
Cutter Wreck is Found off Nova Scotia
After decades of searching, researchers from the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and Coast Guard have located the shipwreck of the former U.S. Revenue Cutter, Bear.
The wreck of the Bear, which was lost at sea in 1963, is about 90 miles south of Cape Sable in Nova Scotia.
It was considered an amazing coincidence when the wreck was one of two targets initially located during an expedition two years by the current Coastguard cutter, also named Bear and which it was decided to explore further by USCG and NOAA teams this year by the larger and better equipped USCG's ocean-going buoy tender, Sycamore, with an advanced remotely operated vehicle (ROV) equipped with high-resolution underwater video cameras to to document the "unidentified wreck".
The team was able to collect evidence to positively identify the wreck.
After serving in the Greenland Patrols during World War II, the Bear was decommissioned in 1944 and was lost at sea while being towed to Philadelphia by a private party in 1963.

Where else in the world would you hear yourself being addressed as Loveen but in Galway - and that's the name of a 96-year-old gleoiteog which is being blessed today (Oct 16) in the Claddagh Basin.
The historic vessel which was built by the Reaneys of Galway's Spanish Arch was bought from the late Nicky Dolan in 2011 with the support of the former mayor and Labour councillor Niall MacNelis.
It was presented to the Port of Galway Sea Scouts, to help continue the culture and tradition of hooker sailing into the next generation
It has been restored, plank by plank, by expert boatbuilders Coilín Hernon, Ciaran Oliver and a large team from the Galway Hooker Sailing Association (GHSA).
Finport Finance, A 'New Team', Experienced 18 Footer Crew

Keagan York's Finport Finance will feature a brand new team when it lines up against 17 other top performers at the Australian 18 Footers League for the club's 2021-22 season on Sydney Harbour.
Keagan, Director and Co-Founder of sponsoring Compass Global Markets, who is the sheet hand on the Finport Finance skiff in 2021-22, has been competing in the 18s since 2010-11 but announced recently that he will move from skipper to the sheet this season to accommodate the talents of his new skipper, Robert Greenhalgh.
Phil Marshall will once again feature in the bow of what should be one of the very best combinations in the highly-talented fleet.
After coming to the 18s as sheet hand for Simon Nearn's De'Longhi-Rabbitohs team in the 2010-11 season, Keagan sailed with Simon until he decided to go his own way as skipper of a self-sponsored skiff in 2014-15, which Keagan, Greg Dixon and Matt Stenta competed in as compassmarkets.com.
Two DNF results in the 2015 JJ Giltinan world Championship naturally affected the team's overall placing in the fleet, but since that regatta, Keagan-led teams have always been well inside the top-10 in the world's major championship.
According to Keagan, "while we don't hold back, we focus on the percentage plays. Taking flyers just isn't in our DNA."
A name change to Finport Finance in the 2017-18 season gave York his best championship result in the 18s when, along with Matt Stenta and Angus Williams, the team finished fourth in the 2018 Giltinan world Championship.
The team had two race wins, a second placing, a third and a fourth, but unfortunately had to carry a thirteenth placing, which spoilt a great regatta.
The inclusion of Rob Greenhalgh into the 2021-22 season team will insure the team maintains its high standard.
The 'new team' will have its first race when the Australian 18 Footers League conducts the opening race of its 2021-22 season on Sydney Harbour. The opening date is dependent on the clarification of government COVID-19 regulations, but is likely to be as soon as Sunday, October 24. -- Frank Quealey
