Peter Burling and Blair Tuke in risky America's Cup strategy
While they have been on retainers since the last victory in Auckland, New Zealand's international sailing stars have confirmed they're yet to sign on full time to Team New Zealand's defence of the Auld Mug. Their statement that they'd "like clarity on the fundamentals of the event before we commit" had an ambiguous feel to it.

They seem to be holding doors open, but doors have a habit of being slammed shut in this game.

Team New Zealand will certainly want skipper Burling and his lieutenant Tuke to stay, but it will likely be on the team's terms. The negotiating table will be fascinating.

here's a crucial Cup phase approaching with the release of the protocol on November 17 that will shape crews and campaigns.

Team New Zealand's biggest vulnerability has been losing talent, and the emphasis that has gone into the nationality clause of the protocol will look to address that.

Champions crowned 2021 at Hansa World Championships in Palermo
An exciting final day in Palermo, Italy, saw medals awarded in all four categories at the 2021 Hansa World Championships. Over 180 sailors from 25 nations showed exceptional technical para sailing and determination in extremely changeable conditions all week.

Sailors from seven countries made their international competition debut in Sicily as para sailing continues to go from strength to strength.

Racing was interrupted by rain on the first day but the weather improved throughout the week, leading to an intense weekend of racing.

In the Hansa 303 Single class, Piotr Cichocki (POL) led throughout to seal victory from Cecile Venuat (FRA) and Rory McKinna (GBR) in the overall rankings

The team of Symonds-Klinger (AUS) claimed victory in the final race, finishing ahead of Górna?-Grudzie?-Cichocki (POL) by just one point in the Hansa 303 Double class.

Jan Sefke Holtrop (NED) finished ahead of Cedric Castaldi (FRA) in the Men's Liberty Servo classification. Star of the week was Piotr Cichocki (POL) who won four out of five races to finish 10 points ahead of second place in the Hansa 303 Single class and 18 points ahead of third.

Prior to the 2021 Hansa World Championships, World Sailing supported sailors from Brazil, Chile, Czech Republic, Estonia, Ireland, Lithuania and the Philippines with travel costs, accommodation and providing boats as part of the Para Sailing Development Program (PDP). The teams also received coaching support as World Sailing aims to increase worldwide participation and expand the competition.

More than 32 nations participate internationally each year at various World Championships. By 2023, World Sailing aims to have 45 nations from six continents participating in all levels of Para sailing and inclusive events.

Maine Racing Provides A Fantastic Test Bed For Varied Hull Shapes
Racing in Maine's varied mid-summer weather and tides rewards a variety of boat types and hull shapes. Why do certain designs work better than others in specific conditions? Read on.

The classic racing season in Maine is short and sweet. Until a few years ago, classic and Spirit of Tradition boats had to pack it all into three days, Thursday through Saturday of the first weekend in August - the Castine Classic, a race from Castine to Camden, the Camden-Brooklin "feeder" race, and the venerable Eggemoggin Reach Regatta. A few years ago, the Camden Classics Cup joined the party with two more days of racing on the last weekend of July, and this year the Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club (BHYC) added a classic element to its annual regatta by inviting vintage, Classic, and Spirit of Tradition boats to sail in their own divisions the week before Camden Classics. A very nice spread of racing in the sweet spot of a Maine summer.

Here's our quick run-down of this year's events except for BHYC which we couldn't make but heard a lot of good things about.

Outrider no more
It took no time at all for the spectacular Drheam Cup - a multi-course event for the world's very fastest yachts - to make a quick upshift from new event to biennial ocean racing classic... and for good reason

All in a day's work
Every time Reckmann supplies a new superyacht sailing system they surprise us by going one step further. With the Judel/Vrolijk 146-footer Path and 196-foot Sarissa II from McKeon they are doing it again...

Tested formula (spectacular) new solution
Several ClubSwan regattas have already been run successfully in 2021 and these typically well-organised and great fun - and very competitive - events have also inspired many others elsewhere to get back on the water

Reaching through history
It takes quite a lot to get Rob Weiland excited about any new yacht race... but this one is unusually special

Just the nine lives?
Spend long enough on the ocean and eventually you will encounter a rather special Nigel Irens-designed catamaran... one that is now well into its 38th 'season'. Nic Compton

Ibiza JoySail Under Starter's Orders Thursday
Midday Thursday and the start gun will sound on the Bay of Palma to send the inaugural Ibiza JoySail fleet on its way on a 68 nautical miles opening offshore race to Ibiza.

Within this beautiful opening passage there will be the chance for each of the competing yachts to set, or challenge for, a new collection of perpetual awards for the 48 miles speed record between Mallorca's Punta Cala Figuera light and the lighthouse on the southern end of Ibiza's Tagomago Island.

This 'race within the race' is designed to add a little extra spice to what is designed to be an enjoyable, fun passage making the most of what promises to be gentle weather and warm autumn sunshine for late season crews, owners, friends and families to share a new experience together.

The arrival at Marina Ibiza will be rewarded with sundowners before an evening programme.

Friday, Saturday and Sunday will then see a schedule of coastal races starting at 1300hrs local time each day making the most of the local winds and taking in the best of the Ibiza and Formentera coastlines.

Among the entries set to race are the newly named, recently purchased Moat, formerly the Swan 115 Highland Fling 15, the Swan 115 Shamanna, the Swan 100s Red Sky, the Dubois designed YD 120 Bliss and Dark Horse, the Swan 80.

Red Diesel Banned In Northern Ireland From October
The UK government has confirmed that red diesel will be outlawed in private pleasure craft in Northern Ireland to meet the UK's obligations under the Brexit withdrawal agreement.

Industry leaders have been urging the government to clarify the position in NI since a u-turn was announced during the spring budget which allows for the continued use of red diesel in Great Britain.

Confirmation has now been published on the government's website that from 1 October 2021, diesel-powered private pleasure craft in Northern Ireland must only use fully duty-paid diesel for propulsion purposes. Red diesel and biodiesel or bioblend are no longer permitted.

Single vs multi-fuel tank
Boats with more than one tank can continue to use red diesel for heating and lighting and there is relief available on duty paid for diesel used for non-propulsion purposes for users of boats with a single fuel tank.

Travel outside Northern Ireland
Travellers can purchase red diesel when in Great Britain or another area which allows red diesel and will not have to flush out their tanks on return to Northern Ireland. However, a declaration of the amount of fuel used for propulsion must be made and duty charged accordingly.

Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula 1 Team CTO Interview
Prior to this week's partnership announcement from Ineos Britannia and the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula 1 Team, America's Cup fans could have been forgiven for not knowing the name James Allison.

However, the British designer's skills and expertise have earned him legend status in Formula 1, and now he is set to make his mark on the America's Cup world as his chief technical officer role at the all-conquering Formula 1 team expands to include the Ineos Britannia AC37 challenge.

Allison - who has described the opportunity to be involved in the British America's Cup campaign as 'mouth-watering' - sat down with a small group of motorsports and sailing journalists earlier this week to talk about what lies ahead.

Here are the highlights of the Q&A:

Can you give an indication of where you think F1 expertise is particularly applicable to the challenge of building a boat fast enough to win the America's Cup?

First off, I think it is worth pointing out that the engineers in America's Cup - the people who have made that their lives - are very fine engineers and they are working on impressive stuff.

Traditionally they work in a championship that grows up to a crescendo - has its fight on the water and then sort of subsides. So they have this different business model to Formula 1 which this ongoing churn.

The fine detail of the hydrodynamics and the aerodynamics - the numerical optimisation that goes on - this stuff is very impressive. We can hold our end up - but we don't necessarily transform their world.

But we have definitely got capable engineers who can join that party on an equal footing and hopefully help swell the numbers. -- Interviewed by Justin Chisholm

Torboli Trophy / 4th Autumn Meeting Optimist
Unexpected conditions for the autumn season at the 44th Torboli Trophy organised by Fraglia Vela Riva: driven by the bora wind that swept through Trieste, for three days on Garda Trentino there was a southerly wind of 18-20 knots and great sunshine. These were certainly challenging races for the over 300 helmsmen from 20 nations, who raced with determination and great skill.

There was a full programme for the Juniores category with 9 races and on Saturday the Gold Fleet, which saw a duel between the usual opponents, Lorenzo Ghirotti from Fraglia Vela Riva and Erik Scheid from Circolo Vela Torbole, both racing in their "home" waters. The final score of the two opponents was very close with two points between Ghirotti and Scheidt, in favour of the former, while the third, the American James Pine was 13 points behind.

The cadets completed eight races and the winner, as is now the case in all major Optimist regattas in the category, was Artur Brighenti, from Club Nautico Brenzone, who took six first, one second and one third places, giving him a 15-point lead over Zhakov from Russia. The other Brighenti, Adam (CN Brenzone) was third ahead of Andrea Demurtas (Fraglia Vela Riva).

Aggressive children and girls, who had no problems with the strong wind dominated with confidence: in both categories they entered the top 10 with Emilia Salvatore from Fraglia Vela Desenzano, who won ahead of Demurtas with an excellent seventh overall and three first partials; third place for the Ukrainian Shapovalova. Among the youngest, excellent seventh place overall for her daughter Vittoria Berteotti (her father is the Optimist coach for Fraglia Vela Riva), first female by just one point ahead of Irene Faini (Fraglia Vela Malcesine); third Margherita Giannantonio (CV Bellano), all three in succession in the overall classification.

Special prize to the youngest junior, who won the Trofeo del Porto: to Leonardo Grossi, again an athlete of Fraglia Vela Riva, the satisfaction of this victory.

Spanish Juan Merediz is the 37th entry in the Global Solo Challenge
Juan Merediz Juan Merediz has sailied since he was a child, learning precious lessons from the local fishermen in Gijón where he lived. Sailing is what he has been doing all his life and he has an enviable background. From sailing as teenager in the Bay of Biscay he moved to professional sailing by taking part in prestigious events such as the Mini Transat in 1995, the Solitaire du Figaro in 1997 and even the Barcelona World Race on an Imoca in 2011/2012. Juan will be sailing a Pogo 40S, identical to the Class40 sailed by the recently signed up French Francois Gouin.

As Oganisers we are pleased to welcome the 3rd Spanish entry in a very international list of entries representing already a total of 13 nations. The Global Solo Challenge has a global appeal, with with its inclusive format that allows for many different types of boats to enter breaking the barrier of elitist professional events usually dominated by sailors from a handful of countries.

How do you plan to prepare for this event?
The first is to get to know my boat well and prepare it thoroughly. So sail and sail again. It will depend on the budget but the intention is to participate in some races of the Class 40 circuit. On a physical level I will repeat the preparation that I have already used in previous ocean races and that I really like, long running, trail running, gravel bike... And sail a lot to get used to the efforts.

What do you think will be the biggest challenge?
Always arrive at the start with a well prepared boat. Then navigate fast knowing how to manage safety and risk on the route. The hardest mile will always be the next mile.

Womens State Keelboat Champs Turns 30
Swan River Sailing is organizing an extra regatta in Fremantle Waters to reflect and celebrate women's contribution to the sport of sailing in WA.

The 30th Anniversary Regatta (Women State Keelboat Championship) is scheduled to take place on Sunday, 7th November at Fremantle Sailing Club. This is the first time that Swan River Sailing is moving the Foundation-36 fleet to Freo Waters (Bathers Beach) specifically for the women's competition. We encourage all female sailors to enjoy a special Sunday filled with inshore racing, fun, and friends. It would be fantastic to see some "reunion" teams back out on the water for this celebration.

The Women's State Keelboat Championship is traditionally a Swan River Sailing Annual Community Event but we are adding a second all-female regatta to the 2021/2022 Events Calendar to celebrate its three decades.

Fremantle Sailing Club has already expressed its interest and 2 teams with 15 female sailors might be registered next week. We hope to see the whole fleet of 9 yachts being taken by the WA Sailing/Yacht Clubs and their Women Development Program participants, registrations are now open here.

Raceboats Only 1905 Gaff Yawl "Dunkirk little ship" - Dawn. 70,000 GBP. Located in Cowes.

Dawn, a Gaff Yawl, was built in Falmouth on 1905 by Thomas of Falmouth. An extract from Yachting Monthly in 1905 says, 'Her owner's requirements were for a thoroughly good sea boat, easily worked without a paid hand.' It goes on to say, 'although of heavy displacement she carries a fair turn of speed and her best point of sailing is to windward in a hard blow.' Although known as a gaff yawl Dawn has her mizzen forward of the stern post so technically she is a ketch. Dawn did her bit at Dunkirk and is on the historic ships register.
