Rambler 88 takes the lead at Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez

Rambler After Wednesday was blown out due to excess wind, day three of racing for the maxis in week two of Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez so nearly didn't occur as come start time the wind remained elusive. Fortunately at around 1330, the wind flicked into the south enabling the race committee from the Societe Nautique de Saint-Tropez and the event's co-organiser, the International Maxi Association (IMA), to get proceedings under way. The well conceived course saw the boats sent out to marks due east of Pampelonne Beach for a pleasant afternoon's racing held in 12-14 knots and flat water.

George David's Rambler 88 is a well known veteran of the high seas and while her owner and her crew enjoy competing in inshore events such as Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez, her preferred race course is offshore where she has scored line honours in most of the major events in the calendar. Thus it comes as some surprise that the long-legged Juan K design should be leading IRC 1 this week, albeit tied on points with Sir Lindsay Owen-Jones Wallycento Magic Carpet 3.

The Rambler 88 crew were particularly on best behavior as sailing with them today was Alinghi Team Principal, Ernesto Bertarelli, with whom many, including Butterworth, won and then defended the America's Cup in 2003 and 2007.

Racing will hopefully continue Friday but this will depend on the wind. As Peter Holmberg explains: "The Mistral is either side of side [in Saint-Tropez] and will be fighting - it could go either way." -- James Boyd / International Maxi Association

High Wind Cancellations
ILCA Europeans:
A white out and another six-hour day on the Black Sea meant race officials were only able to squeeze in one race each for the Laser and Radial classes at the ILCA European Championships in Varna, Bulgaria overnight.

Both fleets spent hours out on the water in rain-driven shifts, but after that lone race the race committee were forced to abandon the day after one last strong squall passed through the course.

Two more days of racing remain. As only six races have been completed for the Laser men and seven for the Radial fleet the race committee will be under pressure to fire off the three races scheduled tomorrow.

44Cup:
While the forecast indicated that it might be sailable, the opening day of this 11th RC44 World Championship was blown out with the northerly winds off Scarlino, Italy regularly reaching the high 20s and gusting into the high 30s. After a wait out on the water the race committee sent the boats back to the Marina di Scarlino to see if conditions would abate and when instead the wind built, soon after 1400 racing was abandoned for the day.

44Cup Principle Race Office Maria Torrijo explained: “We knew the forecast was for strong wind, but we didn’t expect it to be SO strong - we were expecting a maximum of 22-23 knots, but we had gusts up to 39. The average wind was very high as well - there was no way we could start a race. It was not even marginal.”

Sailing Champions League Final:
Adverse wind and sea conditions meant racing could not take place on the first day of the SAILING Champions League Final. The event, organised by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, is scheduled to run through Sunday 10 October.

The 29 clubs taking part met this morning in Piazza Azzurra at 12 midday for the first official briefing of the event. After being welcomed to the YCCS, the crews were advised that the weather conditions - with large waves and strong wind from the north - were close to the acceptable limit to allow racing to take place in safety. At around 2 p.m. after several checks on the conditions at sea, the "AP over Alpha" signal was hoisted ashore, officially communicating the cancellation of racing for today.

In order for the title of "Best Yacht Club of the Year" to be awarded, the teams must complete at least 3 of the 18 flights scheduled. The weather forecast for Friday, indicates a northerly wind of 20-25 knots.

John Merricks Sailing Trust to wind up after 25 years
The Trustees of the John Merricks Sailing Trust today announce their intention to dissolve the charity, and apply its remaining funds to a purpose that will continue to honour the memory of Olympic dinghy sailor John Merricks, who died at a tragically young age in a car crash in October 1997.

John’s love of the sport was sparked at an early age when he learned to sail at school. He was helped to Olympic success by the support of a local benefactor, and the Trust’s residual funds will be gifted to one or more organisations that can provide a lasting legacy that will continue the Trust’s object to help young people under the age of 25 to achieve their potential through the sport of sailing.

Ian Walker, John’s former sailing partner and chair of the Trustees, said:

“Thanks to the generosity of so many, in the last 25 years the Trust has made grants totalling £730,000 to 285 individuals and organisations in John’s name. This has funded the purchase of 235 boats and boards for young sailors and given many young sailors opportunities they never might have had. However, with the passage of time since John’s death, and the effect of the Covid pandemic on the charity’s current and future income, the Trustees have decided that the 25th anniversary of John’s accident, which will be in October 2022, is a fitting point at which to wind up the charity and dispose of its remaining assets. At that time, we intend to use the residual assets of the Trust (approx. £200k) to fund a continuing legacy to honour John’s name."

The Trustees are inviting applications from individuals, other smaller charities and sailing organisations that might accept a financial award and provide a legacy in John’s name that will last for at least 10 years. We see this as an opportunity to develop exciting and innovative ideas that can unlock more of the untapped potential among the nation’s young sailors, particularly those who would not otherwise have the opportunity to take up or progress in the sport. Preference will be given to dinghy or windsurfing initiatives, however, all proposals that fit the objectives of the charity will be considered.

Home win for Macgregor at RYA Summer Match Racing qualifier
It was a home win for Olympian Kate Macgregor and her team at the RYA Summer Match Racing Qualifier 3 over a breeze-on weekend at Poole Yacht Club.

Organisers had thought the event might be in jeopardy due to the high wind forecast for 2-3 October 2021 which saw a number of regattas canned along the south coast.

But in anticipation of a couple of weather-windows, a decision was made to go ahead and the sell-out event saw 10 teams match racing RS21 sportsboats and revelling in the conditions.

With Macgregor’s team continuing undefeated - winning all of their matches for an emphatic victory - Ali Morrish sailing with Emily Robertson, Richard Moxey and Sarah Jarman took second overall, as in 2020, to add to her second place at this year’s Marlow Ropes Women’s Match Racing Championships.

Next up is the RYA Summer Match Racing 4 Qualifier for the Ceilidh Cup in Sonars at Royal Northern & Clyde YC, Helensburgh, this weekend (9-10 October 2021). The series then concludes with the invitational National Match Racing Championship Grand Finals at Queen Mary SC in RS21s, 29-31 October 2021.

Tall Ships Youth Trust LifeChanger Appeal
The UK's largest youth development sail training charity has launched an appeal to raise at least £1.5m to buy an additional large sailing yacht to help hundreds more young people a year with a 'life-changing' voyage.

Tall Ships Youth Trust (TSYT) currently has a fleet of four 72ft Challenger yachts and a 55ft ketch, which enables the charity to take 1,000 young people to sea every year.

Its new LifeChanger Appeal aims to raise the money to buy and refit an additional 70-80ft sized vessel (10-12 berth), increasing its sea-going capacity by approximately 250 young people a year. Funds will also cover three-years' running costs, including bursaries for 750 young people to go on a voyage.

The Trust, which works with young people aged 12-25, has a particular focus on supporting those from disadvantaged backgrounds, with 75 per cent of its beneficiaries coming from this cohort.

Eric Twiname Team Racing Championships
More than 40 teams of young sailors are set for battle this weekend as the 2021 Eric Twiname Team Racing Championships returns.

Around 240 junior and youth sailors from across the country will descend on Oxford's Farmoor Reservoir to compete for the top spot over two days of team-on-team action.

It will be a welcome return for the much-loved event, which had to be cancelled in 2020 due to the pandemic.

Racing will take place in Firefly dinghies for youth teams and RS Fevas for juniors, with prizes awarded in each category.

Teams are made up of three boats in the youth fleet and two boats for juniors, each crewed by two sailors. Teams compete in a round-robin before the top teams face off in a knockout to determine the winners.

The regatta, named after famous sailor, author and journalist Eric Twiname, has seen many members of the current British Sailing Team compete in previous editions such as 470 sailors Eilidh McIntyre, Amy Seabright and Georgina Povall.

Entries are subsidised by the Eric Twiname Trust, which was set up in Twiname's name following his death in 1980.
