12 Metre North American Championship
Over three days of racing for their North American Championship, eight historic 12 Metres had every type of wind condition with which to contend. Starting Thursday (September 23), the fleet completed two races in marginally high winds of 16-18 knots with gusts in the high 20s. Friday followed with two additional races sailed in moderate 8-10 knot breezes after the Race Committee from Ida Lewis Yacht Club delayed starts until late afternoon due to a passing squall. Finally, on Saturday, racing started ahead of schedule because the Race Committee anticipated a dying breeze in the afternoon; for the two concluding races, sailors dealt with light breezes of 5-8 knots.

Winning the North American Trophy in Traditional/Vintage (also combined at this regatta) was 1958 America's Cup winner and 2019 World Champion Columbia (US-16), with veteran 12 Metre owner/skipper Kevin Hegarty (Newport, R.I.) at the helm. The victor's toughest competition came from second-place finisher and 1962 America's Cup winner Weatherly (US-17) and third-place finisher Onawa (US-6).

Harry H. Anderson Memorial Pursuit Race The 12 Metre North American Championship featured a separately scored pursuit race on Sunday (September 26) that commemorated the life of Harry. H. Anderson, Jr. Won by New Zealand, it started and finished off Castle Hill, where spectators could take in the magnificence of these historical sloops (approximately 70 feet in length), many of which competed for the America's Cup between the years of 1958 to 1987.

Traditional/Vintage (3 boats):
1. Columbia (US-16), Kevin Hegarty (Newport, R.I.), 3-1-1-2-2-3; 12
2. Weatherly (US-17), Steve Eddleston, (Bristol, R.I.), 1-3-3-3-1-2; 13
3. Onawa (US-6), Chris Culver (Vero Beach, Fla./Newport, R.I.), 2-2-2-1-3-6(DSQ); 16

Modern/Grand Prix (5 boats):
1. New Zealand (KZ-3), Brad Read (Middletown, R.I.), 1-1-1-3-1-1; 8
2. Enterprise (US-27), Peter Askew (Annapolis, Md.), 2-2-3-1-2-3; 13
3. Challenge XII (KA-10), Jack LeFort (Jamestown, R.I.), 2.6(RDG)-4(DNF)-2-2-3-2; 15.6

Alegre Win Race 1 and lead Menorca 52 SUPER SERIES Sailing Week
Andy Soriano's Alegre hold the overnight lead after the first day of racing at the Menorca 52 SUPER SERIES Sailing Week, comfortably winning the only race which could be contested due to very light, shifty and unsettled northerly breezes which kept tacticians and strategists on their toes until the finish line.

Phoenix, the Plattner family's South African flagged team, looked to be well set to duplicate Sunday's practice race win when they made the best start and led at the top mark. But a consolidating, lower risk move down the first run cost them the lead and they took third gun, also falling prey to an excellent recovery from Vladimir Liubomirov's Bronenosec.

With Vasco Vascotto combining with Luna Rossa compatriot, 49er ace Pietro Sibello as strategist in an all Italian afterguard, the blue hulled Bronenosec made good gains on the second beat when the wind shifted left and they chased runaway Alegre across the finish line.

The New Harken MKIV Ocean Furler.
HarkenMark Four We Asked Cruisers What They Wanted. And We Built That.
We spend time every year asking sailors and professional riggers for feedback on their most (and least) favorite Harken products. Lately it's been oddly predictable: our Mark Four (MKIV) line of headsail furlers rank at or near the very top of their lists. Why? They tell us MKIV has proven to be durable, reliable, and easy to use. It's also straightforward to install.

This assessment drove our decision to start with the technology of that MKIV and develop a new line of furlers for cruisers. This might not sound like a logical leap requiring quantum advances in brainpower. Hmmm. It always looks so obvious at the end.

Our new MKIV Ocean furling line is built and featured especially for cruising. It's smooth-rolling to make every furl a little less physical and bulletproof to stand and deliver for years. It's designed especially for intuitive assembly and retrofit. In fact, it can be installed at the dock without taking the mast down — in an afternoon. The Ocean furler offers Harken's most robust capability. We add the features cruising sailors have been requesting, remove things they want offloaded, and offer MKIV Ocean at a less racey price.

Voiles St. Tropez: The Classics sprinkle magic over the bay
2 Classic yachts, 22 of which are centenarians, kicked off their racing today in picture postcard conditions, the race zone glistening in the sunshine. Split into 10 groups for the rankings, according to their size and rig types, they had the luxury of four separate starts, the smallest sailboats setting sail before their larger counterparts, the 'big boats' being the last to be released. A truly iconic and much coveted award, which this year celebrates its 15th anniversary within the context of Les Voiles, the Rolex Trophy will reward the best yacht in the group of Period Gaffer As, which gathers together seven sublime craft.

The fleet was offered a gentle introduction to play today thanks to the summery conditions and a course spanning 10 miles around the edge of the bay, where the crews were able to go through just about every point of sail and direction, providing the perfect backdrop for each of the boats to show off their true potential. Scud (Herreshoff 1903), Recluta (Frers – Camper & Nicholson replica), making her debut at Les Voiles, and also Sky, the gaff yawl built in 1890, really stood out in their respective groups.

Alcyon 1871, 150 years of history
Alcyon 1871, nicknamed 'the yacht which exaggerates' due to her incredible span of spars, is the oldest complete reconstruction of a racing yacht ever completed in France, A faithful replica of the legendary gunter rig, with a mainsail bordering on a Burmudan-rigged main, her glory days enlivened the end of the 19th century amidst the pioneers of competitive racing in the Mediterranean and it is on these same waters that she continues to race today. 150 years on from her first race, Alcyon, is fittingly celebrating her jubilee in Saint Tropez this Tuesday evening.

Leslie Stretch of Medallia Q&A
On Wednesday 22 September 2021, Leslie Stretch, CEO of Medallia, helped Pip Hare pour the champagne over the bow of the campaign's new IMOCA, called Medallia, aiming for the 2024 Vendee Globe.

After the naming ceremony, which took place at Butler's Wharf in London, just below Tower Bridge, we sat down with Leslie for a chat.

Hi Leslie and congratulations on the boat launch. It makes us think of a widely reported comment you made in the last race during a live link to Pip, where you said: "Let's go shopping for the next boat!" Did you regret that at the time?

Not at all, I was completely determined that we put a real competitor on a competitive boat. It was an asynchronous campaign. We had an fabulous offshore sailor and pilot, just a phenomenal person, an athlete, but we had an old boat. We needed to fix that, so I was very determined to get her a competitive foiling IMOCA for this campaign.

And it's going to be even better by the time we get to the Vendee Globe because we're going to make sure we do the right research on safety, on foiling technology and make sure we've got the best possible opportunity for her.

Back in 2020, the reason we were putting in our money was that a lot of our customers are involved in this sailing network. We thought this is a fantastic thing to do and it's gender neutral too, which is an important thing for my company and its value system. We found Pip was a fantastic ambassador.

But the other reason we put the money in was that we wanted her to get round safely. That was all we cared about.

Fog Cuts Short 1720 European Championships Handing the 'McBearla' Crew the Title at Dunmore East
On Saturday, fog cut short the final day of racing of the 1720 European Championships at Waterford Harbour Sailing Club, handing the overall title to Ross McDonald and the McBearla crew.

Although the stage was set for a thrilling final three races to decide the podium places, overnight scores stood, meaning McDonald and his RopeDock Atara crew won by an impressive margin of 16 points.

A 27-boat fleet, one of the biggest in recent years, had gathered at Dunmore East for the three-day event.

As Afloat reported earlier, McDonald took an early lead in Thursday's first races. It's a return to the performance that McDonald found in July when he won the Eastern Championships on his home waters at Howth.

Thanks to a win and a sixth-place scored on Friday afternoon, another Howth helmsman, Robert Dix, finished second place by a point at the helm of Elder Lemon.

Baltimore's Mark Hassett skippering Live Wire finished third.

The host club's Cian Finnegan won the Under-25 trophy. The 1720 top rookie prize also stayed with the hosts as Rob McConnell took the award in tenth place.

The interclub trophy, based on the top three aggregate scores, went to Baltimore Sailing Club.

Top Ten Overall
1. Rope Dock Atara - McBearla's, 15.0
2. Elder Lemon - Robert Dix, 31.0
3. Live Wire - BSC , 32.0

On Thursday 30th September, the most beautiful centenarian yachts will meet in Saint-Tropez for the 10th edition of the Gstaad Yacht Club Centenary Trophy. Once again, these magnificent boats will elegantly unfurl their huge sails for this elegant, magical and unique regatta.

To celebrate this anniversary edition, 22 yachts are expected on the starting line of the event organized, since its inception during the Voiles by the Gstaad Yacht Club, in co-operation with the Societe Nautique de Saint Tropez, and dedicated to the most beautiful boats of one hundred years or more.

The double winner and title holder of the GYC Centenary Trophy, Olympian (1913) will be on the starting line as well as the 2015 and 2016 winners: Oriole (1905) and the NYYC 50' class Spartan (1912), not to mention the aficionados of the event Esterel (1902), Marga (1910) and Nin (1913).

The "youngest "centenarian taking part in the 10th Centenary Trophy will be the Irish Bermudan cutter Erin (1919 - Fred Shepherd) and the oldest the Bermudan Yawl Sky (1890 - Thetis Ware), interesting to note that both boats fly the Irish flag. Antigua and Barbuda Welcomes Vaccinated Visitors
With the impending start of the 2022 yachting season, the Antigua and Barbuda Marine Association (ABMA) and its members are looking forward to welcoming visitors safely to its shores.

President of the Association, Franklyn Braithwaite says, "All indications are that this coming yachting season will be a bumper one. Events are optimistic that they can take place with all protocols observed. The Antigua Yacht Show, The Superyacht Challenge, the RORC Caribbean 600 and Antigua Sailing Week already have excellent responses in terms of expressions of interest and entries and marinas are reporting that dock reservations are flooding in.'

From October 1st, the Government of Antigua and Barbuda has issued a new travel advisory that all incoming passengers to the twin-island state must be vaccinated. The advisory also changes testing requirements to a COVID-19 RT -PCR test taken within four (4) days of their flight or from their date of setting sail.

The island is currently under additional restrictions which have been created in part to allow non-vaccinated front line workers time to get vaccinated prior to a new vaccine mandate also beginning 1st October. The mandate requires all front-line workers in the tourism industry as well as Government workers to be vaccinated.

As we move towards the start of the season updated travel advisories and any updates to protocol and/or restrictions can be found on the ABMA website.
