Luiz Kahl
Yacht Scoring The sport of Sailing awoke Sunday morning to the tragic news that Luiz Kahl had passed away.

For those unfamiliar with Luiz, he was the creator and owner of Yacht Scoring, the regatta scoring system used by most Caribbean regattas and a vast number of North American [and European -- ed.] events. Luiz traveled to the Caribbean often. We loved having his smiling face and great personality as part of our race management teams.

Tributes have been pouring in all day, as friends, sailors, and organizers from around World expressed their shock at the loss of such an influential character in our sport.

Jaime Torres, CSA Director, mourns Luiz's passing: "Luiz had so much energy and goodwill. He was a mentor and friend. We talked so much story over rum drinks for years. I'm blown away and heartbroken by the news."

Bastien Pouthier, Chief Measurer for the CSA, worked hand-in-hand with Luiz throughout the year and spent many hours reviewing results and discussing ratings. Bastien said of Luiz, "He was every sailor's great friend, and every regatta's right hand. He made everyone feel included and welcome, a uniting figure inside and outside of the sport. So many stories were shared, so many technical conversations enjoyed. Pizza will be eaten, and cocktails raised in his memory at the upcoming regattas."

Pam Fuller, CSA board member for many years and fellow team member at many regattas, said, "Luiz and I shared a desk at regattas all over the Caribbean, from Grenada to the British Virgin Islands, for the last 15 years. He gave a lot of his time and energy to help our smaller events. He always had time to answer questions and share his knowledge. His barbecue and cocktail skills were legendary. There was never any shortage of laughter."

Luiz played a vital role in the Caribbean. Alison Sly-Adams, President of the CSA, says, "There is something about yacht racing which attracts good-hearted people who love the sport and only want to do their best for it. Luiz was an extraordinary person who, aside from his technical skills, bought calm, logic, and creativity to assist in developing practical solutions to much that we do. He will be sorely missed by all of us, but his legacy will live on across the Caribbean".

Rest in Peace Luiz, Fair Winds!

* Your humble narrator worked with Luiz for nearly a quarter century. A code God, brilliant guy and SO easy to work with. As you've noted, he was a promotional partner of this newsletter, and I gave (well deserved) five star, two thumbs up recommendations to hundreds of clients and colleagues over the years. It's just not fair that he's gone at such an early age. Rest in peace Luiz, and thank you for so much help... and laughter... over the past decades.

Canaries Bound!
The first leg of the Mini Transat EuroChef was launched this Monday 27 September at 15:30 hours local time in France. Propelled along by a NW'ly breeze of between 16 and 20 knots, the 90 competitors set sail from Les Sables d'Olonne bound for Santa Cruz de La Palma, with a total of 1,350 miles to negotiate and almost as many obstacles to overcome.

The negotiation of the Bay of Biscay promises to be quite complicated in terms of strategy. We're going to have to nail the timing of our manoeuvres and be quick at it. We're clearly going to have little time to rest until we round the north-west tip of Galicia, but it's going to be an interesting ride. The match is going to be intriguing and above all wide open. That's particularly true after the latitude of Vigo, where two different scenarios are possible today. The first might enable us to link onto a run down to the Canaries at quite a lick. The second could be a little more laborious, with a great deal of uncertainty colouring play. As a result, we'll have to be on the pace from the get-go and not dawdle on our way to Cape Finisterre", indicated Pierre Le Roy (1019 – TeamWork), one of the firm favourites of this 23rd edition in the prototype category.

Avoiding stuffing up the introduction is clearly the mantra shared by all 90 of the solo sailors, as Tanguy Bouroullec (969 – Tollec MP/Pogo) confirmed: "Managing to exit Biscay quickly is definitely a key point in this first leg because after Cape Finisterre, the front runners are likely to steal a march on the rest of the fleet. However, it won't be that easy to play the game well. It'll be essential to be cautious as the front scheduled for Tuesday night rolls through. The latter is likely to be pretty meaty, with upwind conditions gusting to 30 knots, especially as it's accompanied by heavy seas. We're going to have to be careful not to break anything".

Tested formula(spectacular) new solution - Nautor Swan
Nautor Swan Several ClubSwan regattas have already been run successfully in 2021 and these typically well-organised and great fun – and very competitive – events have also inspired many others elsewhere to get back on the water

One-design yacht racing has made a welcome return to the Mediterranean and the ClubSwan Nations League is back in full swing, with strong fleets at the first two events and two more still to come. The season kicked off with the Swan Tuscany Challenge on 25-29 May, organised by Yacht Club Isole di Toscana and hosted by Marina di Scarlino, where several next-generation Swan models also made their world debut at Nautor's own private boat show event, Swan Worldwide Previews, which featured the brand new Swan 58 blue water cruiser, the best-seller Swan 48 cruiser-racer, Nautor's first ever powerboat the Swan Shadow and the MaxiSwan 115 Solleone.

The opening regatta at Scarlino also heralded the launch of ClubSwan Racing as a separate business in its own right, with a clear focus on taking the already successful ClubSwan concept of tightly managed, owner-driver one design racing and rating regattas to a new level.

Mahon and Menorca Ready for 52 SUPER SERIES
The Plattner family's South African flagged Phoenix laid down a marker that they should again be podium contenders when they won today's light winds official practice race prior to Tuesday's start of the Menorca 52 SUPER SERIES Sailing Week.

With America's Cup winner and many times 52 SUPER SERIES champion Ed Baird calling tactics this week, rejoining a team he was with two years ago, Phoenix moved ahead early in the practice race and proved quick and nimble in the modest breeze to win comfortably.

Baird missed the first event of the season, last month's Puerto Portals 52 SUPER SERIES Sailing Week, the first one he has not sailed at since 2017. With Tom Slingsby calling tactics in Mallorca, Phoenix finished third and so Baird has the bar set high.

The 52 SUPER SERIES were afforded a warm welcome back to Mahon and to Menorca, the world's leading grand prix monohull circuit visiting for the fourth time. The local and island authorities recognise the positive profile the circuit generates, delivering positive, immediately understood messages about sport, tourism and sustainability on the beautiful island.

Fog Cuts Short 1720 European Championships Handing the 'McBearla' Crew the Title at Dunmore East
On Saturday, fog cut short the final day of racing of the 1720 European Championships at Waterford Harbour Sailing Club, handing the overall title to Ross McDonald and the McBearla crew.

Although the stage was set for a thrilling final three races to decide the podium places, overnight scores stood, meaning McDonald and his RopeDock Atara crew won by an impressive margin of 16 points.

A 27-boat fleet, one of the biggest in recent years, had gathered at Dunmore East for the three-day event.

As Afloat reported earlier, McDonald took an early lead in Thursday's first races. It's a return to the performance that McDonald found in July when he won the Eastern Championships on his home waters at Howth.

Thanks to a win and a sixth-place scored on Friday afternoon, another Howth helmsman, Robert Dix, finished second place by a point at the helm of Elder Lemon.

Baltimore's Mark Hassett skippering Live Wire finished third.

The host club's Cian Finnegan won the Under-25 trophy. The 1720 top rookie prize also stayed with the hosts as Rob McConnell took the award in tenth place.

The interclub trophy, based on the top three aggregate scores, went to Baltimore Sailing Club.

Top Ten Overall
1. Rope Dock Atara - McBearla's, 15.0
2. Elder Lemon - Robert Dix, 31.0
3. Live Wire - BSC , 32.0
4. Probably Legal - Mia Murphy, 34.0
5. Dutch Gold - Rob O'Leary, 36.0

Isle of Wight sailor claims dinghy sailing record
A sailor is claiming the first world record for the greatest distance sailed in a single-handed dinghy in 12 hours. Harry White, 21, from the Isle of Wight, covered 107.66km (66.9 miles) during the challenge on Tuesday.

Guinness World Records is yet to confirm the record but said the minimum requirement was 65.64km (40.8 miles).

Mr White, who set off from the Royal Victoria Yacht Club in Ryde at 07:00 BST, crowdfunded for the equipment needed to complete the challenge.

Sailing a ICLA 7 dinghy, he crossed the eastern Solent, taking in Stokes Bay, Bembridge, Portsmouth and Ryde.

He was accompanied by a support boat, piloted by one of his brothers and carrying two pairs of official record witnesses who took shifts to record video footage and make notes.

Guinness is expected to confirm the record next week.

WHAT Rosie: A Sweet Spirit of Tradition Daysailer

The genesis of an excellent design is as varied as the number of designs we've created over the years. This design began when a long-time friend and client, with a lifetime of sailing and owning various craft approached us to re-imagine the Herreshoff Rozinante yawl. He owned two of the Rozinantes at one time or another but understood that in a new design he would be able to merge the looks he admired of L. Francis's masterpiece with the modern performance realized in a 100 years of sailboat design evolution

Rozinante is the canoe-stern ketch that's become iconic as the archetype of the classic camper-cruiser. Influenced by Nantucket whaleboats and the protagonist of L Francis's well-loved book The Compleat Cruiser, she is a slippery thing, narrow and sleek, with strikingly hollow waterlines streaming from stem to stern. The coaming terminates in sharp points at each end and encloses a deep, narrow cockpit with minimal cuddy that somehow provides space for two to sleep, compact canvas sling seats, and just enough room for a camp-stove and a cedar bucket.

Rozinante's simplicity inspired our new Rosie, but the higher performance.

Ranger the 80-Year-Old Snipe Dinghy at Lough Erne Heritage Skills Day

For a very long time, the Snipe class Dinghy Ranger languished in the Boathouse at Crom Castle on Upper Lough Erne, but after lengthy restoration by Fred and George Ternan, Ranger has been afloat twice recently and last weekend at the Lough Erne Heritage Festival, she created a stir on display in the grounds of Enniskillen Castle.

WHAT

The festival celebrated various heritage skills, local talents, and heritage projects, including Willow Weaving, Rush craft and Rope making, Thatching and Blacksmithing, and there were Rowing tours on the Erne and Historical tours of the Castle.

Fred Ternan was there to show off Ranger and discuss all things maritime heritage, and he gave a dedicated talk on the Snipe's restoration.

There were about 1000 people who visited the festival, and many took photos of Ranger and its display sparked much conversation and tales of sailing on Lough Erne in the past. Brian Osborne from Lough Erne Heritage (It aims to encourage local heritage research about Lough Erne, its traditional boats and the people who built and used them), says that "The future for classic sailing certainly appears to be bright. We had our fair share of interested parties of all ages. Our restored Snipe provided a fitting backdrop for dozens of people eager for a memorable photograph. If the level of interest shown is anything to go by, then classic dinghy sailing on Lough Erne has a positive future".

Launched in January 2021, the X5.6 continues the renewal of the X Yachts range. This yacht of more than 17 m is aimed at a couple in love with stylish sailing without giving up comfort.

Today, the X6.5 - although still in the catalog - is no longer really promoted by the Danish shipyard. With the renewal of the X Yachts range, started with the X4.3 (already 100 units in 5 years!), the X5.6, which has the same arguments, becomes the largest model.

WHAT

This monohull sailboat is a real cruiser-racer designed to offer a reduced crew (mainly a couple) the possibility to sail on a large, powerful, easy to handle and very comfortable sailboat.

We were able to discover this sailboat moored in the Cannes Yachting Festival in September 2021. The fluidity of the lines of the deckhouse calls out. It must be said that nothing hinders the view, neither winches nor piano blockers, nor hood. Only the teak deck slats guide our gaze towards the bow. Moreover, on a yacht of more than 17 m, the deckhouse fits perfectly into the line without being prominent. We will discover later that the deckhouse canopy is still present, but that it disappears completely under the deck in a perfectly adapted niche.

At the Newport International Boat Show, attendees were treated to one of the most innovative new cruising sailboats to come onto the market in a while. The Salona 46, which was introduced in Europe last year, is a modern, slippery J&J design built by an innovative builder of racer cruisers known for their performance and the high quality of the build.

Salona partnered with Ocean Volt on this project. The 46 has a 30.4 kWh lithium-ion battery bank that drives the twin Ocean Volt Servo Prop electric motors and sail drives. With a 100-percent charge, the 46 can motor at 6.5 knots for 10 hours or can speed along at 8.5 knots for more than three hours.

Salona 46

When the boat is under sail, the Servo Prop units act as generators that recharge the battery bank. At speeds of over 5 knots, the battery bank can go from zero charge to 100% in about 20 hours, or faster at higher sailing speeds.

Because the 46 is a fast-sailing cruiser that will make more than 5 knots most of the time when sailing, it is a good prospect for self-regenerating electric propulsion. While an electric-powered cruising boat is not a new idea, it appears that Salona and Ocean Volt have evolved a system –both in yacht design and electric propulsion– that seems to be a very promising marriage. I for one would probably carry a 1000 kw portable generator aboard, just in case. But that's the belt and suspenders redundancy that I've learned to appreciate over the years. Still, I think we may be looking at, in the Salona 46, what an electric-powered future looks like in production cruising sail boats. -- George Day
