Etchells British Championships
Etchells British Championships 23 boats came to the start line for the Etchells British Championships on the weekend of September 17 18 and 19. Hosted by the Royal Yacht Squadron this was a highly competitive fleet, with three or four potential winners of next yearyear's World Championship in Cowes. Who knows if next year's World Championship in Cowes, to be sailed over the same dates, will be as sunny, but in 2021 the Solent delivered warm sunshine and three great days of racing. The first two in a south easterly breeze at 7 to 13 knots, the last in a more variable northerly with some big holes in the breeze, particularly to the left of the course.

Although the fleet was never tested with more than 13 knots of breeze, we had eight very good races. The winning team of Ante Razmilovic Brian Hammersley and Noel Drennan thoroughly deserved its victory, finishing each race bar one in the top 5. Razmilovic has always been at the top of the fleet in stronger breezes, but here he put together a series winning score line that was sealed on the last day when the wind was at its lightest.

The Etchells fleet in the UK is now as strong as it's ever been in terms of competition, with the racing very close both in individual races, with many boats being able to win a race, and also in the overall standings. The regatta was only decided on the last run of the last race! We look forward to more high quality racing leading into the 2022 Worlds in Cowes next September.

Paul Ward, just back from sixth place in the J 70 World Championship, and second place in the J 70 European Championship, ended up second overall after a good last day.

Final top five
1. Swedish BLUE - Ante Razmilovic / Brian Hammersley / Noel Drennon, GBR, 22.0 points
2. Eat, Sleep, E, Repeat - Paul Ward / Charlie Cumbley / Andrew Mills, GBR, 24.0
3. Gelert - James Howells / Ruairidh Scott / Jamie Lea, GBR, 26.0
4. Louise Racing Team - Grant Gordon / Luke Patience / Elliott Hansen / Arran Holman, GBR, 46.0
5. No Dramas (Corinthian) - Andrew Lawson / Hamish Mackay / Billy Russell, GBR, 48.0

Emirates Team New Zealand and RNZYS Reveal Damning Details Behind The 'Team Dunphy' Bid
Yesterday Mr Dunphy clearly stated in a press release that direct claims by Emirates Team New Zealand about his off shore dealings were 'false'.

However despite both private and public requests for direct answers there has been nothing more than general sweeping press statements and an avoidance to directly answer our specific questions:

-Did you have a call with a member of the NYYC who is directly involved with the America's Cup where you asked for their support to file an action in the New York Supreme Court to challenging the validity of Royal Yacht Squadron as Challenger of Record?

-Did you advise the NYYC member that you have the financial support of Ernesto Bertarelli and have also been communicating with Larry Ellison?

-Have you had any meetings with any persons who represent or could be deemed to represent a rival team intending to enter AC37?

- Was Hamish Ross representing you when he lobbied the NYYC via email to instigate an action in the New York Supreme Court ?

If it is was intended that yesterday's statement is a denial then Mr Dunphy should look at his zoom call register and refresh his memory as the call was initiated by him. Emirates Team New Zealand were briefed in full on all discussion points immediately after the call in early September and have a record of it.

Furthermore, Emirates Team New Zealand now release details of an email (dated 26/8/21) to the Commodore of the NYYC from Dr. Hamish Ross with Mr Dunphy (both members of the RNZYS) in direct copy. Dr Ross was formally a legal counsel with Alinghi during their 2003, 2007 and 2010 campaigns. The email clearly outlines their intentional lobbying of the NYYC to take legal action in the New York Supreme Court against the Challenger of Record with a purpose of intentionally disrupting the venue selection process.

Dubarry Sailing Boots
Dubarry Sailing Boots Every racing sailor knows the value of optimisation. Many small gains add up incrementally to deliver a significant competitive advantage on the water. The same holds true for the kit you wear on board and Dubarry sailing boots are a sure-fire way to optimise your personal performance.

Non-Slip, Non-Marking outsoles with a super-high friction coefficient and unique water dispersion channels provide game-changing grip on wet, slippery foredecks. The midsoles offer superb shock absorption when you’re charging across the deck or or bracing for hours on end in a rough sea state. Specially shaped and cushioned insoles give extra support when you’re sailing upwind at an extreme angle of heel. Supple, hand-sewn uppers ensure full freedom of movement. Breathable Gore-Tex membranes and high-performance insulation keep your feet dry and comfortable in a wide range of conditions. Stretchy Lycra sections ensure a perfect fit, and the D-Chassis system protects heels and toes while preserving your agility.

Ultra-light Fastnet boots are ideal for fast-paced inshore racing where weight saving is crucial - an average-sized pair weighs less than a kilo and they’re engineered for athletic sailing performance.

If you also race offshore and still need full agility, or if you’re sailing inshore through the winter, the design classic Ultima boots are a smart investment. Luxuriously comfortable and resolutely practical, the full-leather uppers are incredibly strong and supple when soaked in salt water.

Whichever you choose, they’ll deliver the performance you need for years to come.

Hamble IRC Autumn Championships 2021
This year's Hamble IRC Autumn Championships will take place over the weekend of 9th & 10th October. Now a regular feature of the HYS Hamble Winter Series, the championship attracts a good number of entries. Indeed, with three weeks still to go, twenty nine teams have already entered. There will be three races on the Saturday and two on the Sunday, weather permitting.

Two of last year's winning boats are already back. IRC Class 3 winners, Ian Handley and Tim James are back with their Mustang 30 Mk11, Banter. Last year it was "Gr8 Banter", so there must be a story there! They are unlikely to have it all their own way this year however, as the current Quarter Ton Cup winner, Protis, Ian Southworth and Team Hamble, has returned to the championship after last winter's lock down. J'Ronimo, the J92 of David Greenhalgh is also likely to there or there abouts when the points calculated.

The other returning winner is Simon Perry and his Jiraffe. This time Jiraffe is a Cape 31 and not a J109, so Simon will be unable to defend his IRC Class 2 win. This should make life a bit easier for Jago, J109, Mike and Susie Yates, who were second in the IRC Autumn Championship, but nudged Jiraffe into second place in main HYS Hamble Winter Series in 2020. With sixteen of the current entries in IRC Class 2, it looks like a highly competitive affair.

The new Jiraffe is going to have to play in IRC Class 1 this year. Last year their Cape 31 sister ship, Tokoloshe 3, cleaned up in both the IRC Autumn Championship and the HWS main series. Skippered by David Bartholomew and with the added guile of David Swete, the Cape 31 performed so well that the two David's and their associates have managed to grow the fleet to some 9 boats in 2021. -- Trevor Pountain

Harken Reflex: a Potent Weapon for Short-Handed Racing
Harken Reflex It's one of the most significant growth trends in our sport for a reason; short-handed sailing makes every individual crewmember decision essential. There's nowhere to hide. Every maneuver becomes a critical opportunity to save energy and gain miles.

Harken Reflex was expressly designed for short-handed sailing. Multiple races of Torlon™ bearings in the lower drive unit team up with stainless steel needle bearings in the ultra-compact upper unit to make to manual A-sail furling as smooth and easy as can be achieved.

Reflex furls A-sails easily and completely every time. No wonder sailors are coming to Harken dealers every day with requests to retrofit existing sails or to team Reflex with cable-free code zeros. So Harken has introduced additional Reflex accessories to make reliable furling possible for more sails and more applications. With Reflex on the sprit, you've got the competition right where you want them! Want to know more? Ask your Harken Dealer about RELEX for short-handed sailing.

A Message From The Commodore: 37th America's Cup
RNZYS is concerned and disappointed with recent findings on a potential funding arrangement that might have enabled the 37th America's Cup Defence to be held in Auckland.

RNZYS first met with Mark Dunphy on 1 July. Since this meeting RNZYS have continued to encourage both Mark Dunphy and Grant Dalton to meet. RNZYS expressed this in writing as recently as Monday of this week. This would now seem extremely unlikely given what has been found.

RNZYS as Trustee of the America's Cup is very aware of the responsibilities that brings. The RNZYS General Committee is responsible for all decisions the Club makes including anything to do with the America's Cup and will in due course consider any further action.

ETNZ and RNZYS have an agreement with ETNZ who is responsible for conducting the defence of the 37th America's Cup. As our representative team, ETNZ have the full support of the RNZYS. RNZYS has a preference that the defence be held in Auckland with the caveat that there is funding to run a credible defence together with support from Local & Central Government.

Aaron Young
RNZYS Commodore

Emirates Team New Zealand CEO Grant Dalton said, " Emirates Team New Zealand is disappointed by Mark Dunphy's underhanded and deceitful attempts to undermine the RNZYS, ETNZ and the RYS with his despicable actions. We gave him every opportunity to tell us himself, but he chose not to and as far as we are concerned this puts an end to a regrettable chapter in AC37. We applaud Commodore Culver and the NYYC for wanting no part and rejecting Mr Ross and Mr Dunphy's overtures."

"The RNZYS is our representative club, we support them and I have no doubt the club will find this incredibly disappointing and will have their own process to deal with this situation."

Emirates Team New Zealand and RNZYS have decided to cease all correspondence and any dealings with Mr Dunphy based on clear evidence of his and his associate Dr. Hamish Ross's conflicted actions that they have refused to come clean on.

Snipe Western Hemisphere Championship
Light winds greeted the fleet as they pushed off the dock and headed out to the race course, just a 30 minute sail from Cottage Park Yacht Club and adjacent to the runway of Boston's Logan airport. After a 45 minute delay to wait for the wind, race 3 began but was quickly under AP to wait for the wind to settle. Race 3 began in 6 knots with puffs to 10 at times. Doug Hart/ Christina Persson (USA) led with a large margin at the weather mark and kept it until the second downwind gate. As the race progressed, a squall from the south formed and the wind shifted right with puffs to 23 knots at times. George Szabo / Dianna Waterbury (USA) were among those who went right capitalized on the increased breeze with rain and passed the leaders at the finish. Behind Szabo was Antonio Poncell & Carolina Martinez of Chile with John MacRae/ Linda Epstein (USA) in third.

After the squall, the fleet had to wait around for the wind to fill which it eventually did in 5-6 knots. Augie Diaz/Barbie Brotons (USA) led wire to wire in the light air race.

After 2 days, Diaz/Brotons (USA) lead with 11 points, Szabo/Waterbury (USA) in second with 17 points and Arthur Blodgett/Gracie Howie (USA) in third with 23 points.

Racing continues Thursday through Saturday with 9 races scheduled. Tomorrows forecasts looks promising with a deteriorating forecast for Friday.

Andy Burnett-Herkes
Andy Burnett-Herkes A champion of Bermuda sailing who kept the Spirit of Bermuda training sloop shipshape and Bristol fashion was yesterday saluted by the charity that operates the vessel.

Andy Burnett-Herkes, who died this month, proved integral to the running of the Spirit in recent years.

David Goodwin, the chairman of the Bermuda Sloop Foundation Board, said the loss of the longstanding board member and marine operations expert had left the entire organisation in "deep sorrow".

He added: "I invited Andy to the join the board for many reasons back in 2016, but I knew him from many previous Tall Ships events since 2009.

"We were also colleagues at Bank of Butterfield many years ago.

"Andy wore many hats in support of good causes and throughout was his loyalty and dedication to developing sailing in Bermuda."

Mr Goodwin said Mr Burnett-Herkes's expertise in marine operations had been "invaluable to keeping the Spirit of Bermuda in the best condition with tight resources" and in keeping its youth development programmes on course.

He added: "We thank his wife, Sarah, and his family for sharing him with us and offer our deep sympathy for their loss.

"I considered him a good friend and we will miss him dearly."

Mr Burnett-Herkes was also a 40-year member of the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club and a volunteer and officer there for 34 years.

He sat on the Bermuda Race Organising Committee where his roles included the race committee, chief inspector and chief post-race inspector.
