Hempel Mixed Two Person Offshore Worlds
Giovanna Valsecchi & Andrea Pendibene have sailed to a slender but useful lead on day two of Leg 2 of the 2021 Hempel Mixed Two Person Offshore World Championship in Italy.

Valsecchi and Pendibene are both members of Italy's Navy service, and are proud to carry the name Marina Militare on their Figaro 3 keelboat. Before the start of the 300-mile leg from Bari to Marina di Ravenna, Pendibene said he wasn't going to consult the weather models in the Adriatic Sea too closely. He prefers to take a more 'seat of the pants' approach to weather routing, sailing by instinct and what he sees around him.

The team's untechnical, instinctive approach seems to be working well for the Italian duo who held a 12-mile lead over the fleet as they closed in on the coastline near the port of Ancona this afternoon.

Behind Valsecchi and Pendibene are the other Italian crew on Team ENIT (Claudia Rossi / Pietro D'Alì), battling in a tight bunch with Team USA Orcas (Christina Wolfe / Justin Wolfe), Team Belgium (Sophia Faguet / Jonas Gerckens) and Team South Africa (Michaela Robinson / Siyanda Vato).

Team ESP who won Leg 1 and were leading this leg 24 hours ago have dropped a little behind into sixth place, followed at a distance by Sweden, Team USA U.S.M.M.A. Sailing Foundation and Team GBR. Team Poland is playing catch-up, some way off the back of the pack.

This evening however could lead to another shutdown of the breeze, or as Vato from South Africa described it last night, a "Factory Reset".

There are ten teams from eight nations competing in this inaugural World Championships. Part of the 2021 Marina Militare Nastro Rosa Tour which has already seen the Figaro 3 fleet navigate the western seaboard of Italy, the 2021 Hempel Mixed Two Person Offshore World Championship is an 816nm race that is being played out across three stunning stages along the Adriatic coast:

Leg 1: Brindisi to Bari
Leg 2: Bari to Marina di Ravenna
Leg 3: Marina di Ravenna to Venice

There are teams representing Italy, Belgium, USA, South Africa, Great Britain, Spain, Sweden and Poland.

The event concludes at the end of Leg 3 in Venice on 24 September, when the first ever winners of the 2021 Hempel Mixed Two Person Offshore World Championship will stand on the podium in one of Italy's most beautiful cities.

Snipe Western Hemisphere Championship
Two races were held today on Boston Harbor in beautiful conditions for all. Glorious 70 degrees with 6-8 knots of breeze greeted the anxious fleet as they waited for the first gun. A little too anxious as the first race was a general recall and after a second start under U flag, 6 teams were caught over with only 1 returning. As the race progressed, Arthur Blodgett and Gracie Howe (USA) lead into the gate and miscalculated the finish line allowing the Chilean team to cross first - but they were OCS so Blodgett/Howe became race winners followed by Taylor Scheuermann and Charlie Bess (USA) and Augie Diaz/Barbie Brotons (USA) in third.

After some shifting and increasing breezes, the race course was adjusted and the second race began in 10 knots and an ebb tide. The current was pushing north/south across the race course and added to another set of 6 boats called OCS. PRO Matt Hill commented on the "good, tight racing with the fleet hanging tight together" which was evident again as the fleet finished within minutes of each other. Local Jim Bowers with Julia Marsh Rabin (USA) capitalized on his local knowledge

Racing continues Wednesday through Saturday with 9 races scheduled. Tomorrows forecasts is for warmer temperatures and lighter winds.

Gentoo Win 2021 IRC Double Handed National Championship
A reduced but competitive fleet fought it out over the weekend of 18/19 September in the RORC's IRC Double Handed National Championship with four races scheduled over two days.

Saturday saw a steady Easterly breeze allowing the race team to set a nine-mile course around laid and fixed marks. Gentoo, sailed by James Harayda and Dee Caffari made their intentions clear by winning from the J/109 Jago, sailed by Mike Yates and Will Holland with Diablo beaten into third by 4 seconds on corrected time.

Sunday saw a temperamental North Westerly wind slowly moving towards the West. After a short postponement, race three got under way with a beat towards Gurnard and reach towards Williams shipping and onto less tide around the Brambles Bank. With the wind slowly decreasing, the race was shortened off Cowes, this time Jago had done enough to win, with Chilli Pepper sailed by Jim Driver taking second ahead of Gentoo.

Race four saw a short beat and then a reach to the Lepe shoreline before an upwind downwind course finishing at the RORC buoy. Chilli Pepper improved to take first place from Gentoo, leaving Mike Yates in Jago ruing the OCS in race two that may have cost him the overall title.

So Gentoo, James Harayda and Dee Caffari are the 2021 IRC Double Handed National Champions and the prizes will be awarded at the UKDHOS dinner in Cowes next month.

A return to corinthian ocean racing
Only two more years until the start of the Ocean Globe Race and the return of amateur ocean racing, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the 1973/1974 Whitbread Round the World Race .

Sir Chay Blyth , who led the British maxi-yacht Great Britain II to real-time victory in this first edition, has agreed to be the sponsor of the OGR and to kick off the start on September 10. 2023, of a fleet which now numbers 22 yachts, representing 14 countries.

Where will the race start from?

Don McIntyre , Founding Chairman of OGR: " It would be fantastic to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Whitbread with a departure and arrival in the UK, but there is strong competition from European ports to host one of the main world sailing events of 2023 and 2024. Other ports are also candidates to host stopovers in South Africa, Australia and South America, and share the international media exposure of the race . "

The announcement of the final route is expected early next year.

The first three Whitbreads started and ended in Portsmouth before moving to Southampton in 1985. The stopovers were Cape Town, Sydney, Fremantle, Auckland, Rio de Janeiro, Mar del Plata, Punta del Este, Sao Sebastio as well as on one occasion Fort Lauderdale, Baltimore and La Rochelle.

Sir Chay Blyth, veteran of the 1973/1974 and 1981/1982 editions, welcomes the return of amateur races around the world: "After the first Whitbread, these races became more professional to end up with expensive and sophisticated yachts requiring disproportionate levels of sponsorship. This has contributed to the exclusion of amateur teams against which I have always been against. Today, the Ocean Globe Race is a return to the golden age of ocean racing, and encourages participants to enter production or historic Whitbread yachts, giving amateur sailors the opportunity to take on one of the world's greatest challenges. I know hundreds of people who would jump at the chance to go around the world via Cape Horn. For many of them, it will be a once in a lifetime opportunity, now it is time to seize it with both hands! How The Boom In Offshore Racing Is Generating Jobs ... And Talent Scarcity Issues
Ultimes, Imoca, Class40, Minis, the projects are multiplying, calendars are expanding. And so it seems that more and skippers and boats want to find a place on the different starting lines. The very specialist offshore racing recruitment market is under severe strain. Teams, yards, suppliers, all are looking for solutions. Here is an overview.

Actually the numbers are pretty crazy, regardless of the class. This year, two new Ultims were launched (Banque Populaire XI and SVR Lazartigue). In the Imoca class already eleven new post Vendee Globe 2020 boats have already been announced - for Charlie Enright (just launched), Jeremie Beyou, Kevin Escoffier, Yannick Bestaven, Armel Tripon, Boris Herrmann, Maxime Sorel, Jörg Riechers, Thomas Ruyant, a sistership of the former L'Occitane and a new Arkea-Paprec ... and it is almost certainly not over.

As for Class40s, 12 new boats will have been launched this year, around another ten should follow in 2022, while there will be 46 boats at the start of the Transat Jacques Vabre, 55 (according to the notice of race) next year on the Route du Rhum. As for the Mini-Transat, 137 applied and 90 (a new record, they should in principle have been 84) will start on September 26, the new boats, mainly series build have been leaving the yards at an intensive pace - 27 in 2020!

"We really have this feeling that we are living in quite exceptional times," says Yann Dollo, deputy general manager of CDK Technologies, which is currently building Charal 2, Maître CoQ V and soon the new boat for Thomas Ruyant. "Generally, there is always a period of uncertainty after the Vendee Globe, but it has never been like this", continues Yann Penfornis, the general manager of Multiplast, who are working on three Imocas - for Boris Herrmann, Maxime Sorel and a skipper not yet announced - and bear in mind the the Vannes yard still has to deliver three Class40s by next spring (the first Clak40, for Andrea Fornaro, has just been launched).

Sailing World on Water September 17.21
Well this is the highlight this week in the sport of Sailing. Look at this 7 Ton, 60 foot yacht, flying above the water at high speed just like a little foiling Moth. Yesterday the 14 IMOCA boats set out from Lorient racing around the North Atlantic. If they all had T Rudders imagine the look of that fleet.

Then flying around the world in the Vendee Globe and to Martinique in the Transat Jacques Vabre? And think of the boatbuilders who will have to retro fit the boats? We're excited as it's the best thing we've seen for ages. And that includes the America's Cup. Who by the way are having troubles finding a venue for the 37th. Valencia and Cork have withdrawn their offers leaving host city Auckland, another unannounced Spanish contender, and the city at the entrance to Mecca, Jeddah, the only visible contenders.

But there may be others, it has happened before.

LM46 After celebrating the launch of the LM46 with her family and crew in Camden, Maine, Hopgrasser is heading to the Newport International Boat Show.

This cold-molded performance cruiser is an undeniably fantastic collaboration between me, my dad, and designer Kevin Dibley. Our first day of sail trials saw both 10 knots under power and 10 knots under sail. We are excited to get the boat fine-tuned to really see what she can do. We are looking forward to showing her in Newport and we hope to see you there. Hull 2 will be launched later this fall, hull 3 is next! Who's going to get that slot?

Saffier Yachts, the world's biggest daysailer brand, has racked up yet another European Yacht of the Year nomination. Its 6th! This time for the company's brand new Saffier Se 33 Life. Saffier Yachts has won the European Yacht of the Year award already three times. The last time was in 2021 for the Saffier Se 27 Leisure this year.

Saffier 33

Why is this company - that makes about 100 sailing yachts annually - so successful?

It's more than good looks, explains Sales & Marketing Manager Kay Heemskerk. Saffier Yachts boast distinctive features and layout options that reflect the yard's high-end day sailing philosophy. "This means comfort, ease of handling and the best sailing characteristics," he adds. "Sailing is no longer about getting from A to B. It is about sailing and anchoring and enjoying life on board with friends and family. That is very much the Saffier Yachts' philosophy."

Sales & Marketing Manager Kay Heemsker says his company's design team "thought hard about what the increasingly critical sailor expects from a new boat."

It gave the Saffier Se 33 Life extreme stability. "All sheets, halyards and trim lines are operated from the helmsman position. That means the Saffier Se 33 Life is, like all Saffiers, super easy to sail singlehandedly, even with more wind or extra sails like a Code Zero or gennaker."

The cockpit can accommodate 10 people.

Alongside with the two Jeanneau Yachts 60 models, the builder will also display three Sun Odyssey sailboats - the 410, 440 and 490, the flagship of the iconic line.

* From Euan Ross: re: New Zealand and the America's Cup

The maxim 'sail a boat you can afford' is always relevant in yachting and a crucial first principle if you want to win. The little cash-strapped country of New Zealand is now becoming increasingly aware of the consequences of conjuring up the most complicated and expensive 68ft yacht in the history of the sport. However, TNZ has yet to admit that they have gotten in too deep. Meanwhile, their attempts to hawk the doubtful benefits of a Cup Defence around the world are, unsurprisingly, unravelling. Perhaps TNZ, with a history of sport-washing via their Emirates sponsorship, would be comfortable in Saudi Arabia, but their travelling support surely won't.

Cork and Valencia appear to have recognised that economic impact reports are simply marketing tools and bear no relationship to the real-world cost/benefit. In my old 'day job', the 'client' (usually an international development bank looking to lend a sovereign government money on a project of doubtful value) was always happy, and in some cases determined, to manipulate feasibility, for example by recruiting another gang of less-principled consultants to jazz up the results. In the yachting world, the misinformation published on the economic return of events like the America's Cup and SailGP does no service to the sport. It is not as if there is a vacuum of context. The Vendee Globe and other shorthanded events have done their sums properly and the numbers are in the public domain
