Stars+Stripes Team Wins 56th Congressional Cup at Long Beach Yacht Club
Taylor Canfield's (USA) Team Stars+Stripes has triumphed in the 56th Congressional Cup at Long Beach Yacht Club, capping five-days of high-test competition in this World Match Racing Tour championship event: and making Canfield the winningest skipper in the 56-year history of the Cup.

Said Canfield, of his fifth Congressional Cup victory, "It's incredible, but it feels just like every other win. Fantastic! And to win with the Stars+Stripes Team again: I'm on top of the world." Racing with Canfield was Mike Buckley, CEO of Stars+Stripes, plus Mac Agnese, Leo Boucher, Victor Diaz De Leon, George Peet and Erik Shampain.

Chris Macy officiated as Chair of the 2021 Congressional Cup assisted by Executive Committee members Lisa Meier, Bob Piercy, Steve Meyer, and Tony Mansour, plus LBYC Commodore Jon Shull. Principal Race Officer for the event was Randy Smith and officiated by Chief Umpire Flavio Naveira with a team of 14 international umpires.

Red Bull Sailing Team claims GC32 Worlds on countback
Roman Hagara and Hans-Peter Steinacher on Red Bull Sailing Team started the day with a six point lead. However with five races scheduled, in stronger conditions and reaching starts, the field was still open. Especially dangerous looking were the defending World Champions, Alinghi, who hadn't sailed their best on Saturday and left Marina di Villasimius with things to prove.

And so they did. The Swiss two time America's Cup winners were on fire, unable to put a foot wrong in the bigger conditions, posting a 1-1-2-1 scoreline. Red Bull Sailing Team, while racing well, were unable to match this and started the final race three points astern of the Swiss champions. As Alinghi led away she seemed to have the championship sewn up until the unimaginable happened and going into the leeward gate for the final time she suffered a breakage dropping her down the fleet. Meanwhile ahead positions were changing rapidly. Ultimately Red Bull Sailing Team finished fourth as Alinghi limped home in seventh. This left her tied on points with the Austrian team, who were crowned the 2021 GC32 World Championship by virtue of their place in the final race.

The blink of an eye - B&G
B&G Racing an F50 cat in the SailGP series you will be lucky to get that long...

The ability to judge where the start line is as you approach it at 40kts is not something that troubles most racing sailors. But for SailGP crews the information is crucial. The new B&G Zeus3S Glass Helm displays that are now mounted in the lower sections of each boat's solid wing sail help the crews to avoid jumping the gun.

The B&G screen technology that that the F50s are now fitted with has seen a big improvement in the display of data that is served up to the crews and it also provides an indication of what might lie in store for more mainstream racing in the future. The 24-inch screens can be configured to display a range of real-time data from performance information such as boatspeed and heading to windspeed and direction as well as more complex functions such as lay lines and speed to burn calculations. This is the crews' main instrument display aboard the cats.

Land Union September Regatta
The final day of the Land Union September Regatta, hosted by the Royal Southern Yacht Club, was blessed with better wind than forecast, producing a grand finale for the Royal Southern Summer Series. Congratulations to all eight class winners and especially Glyn Locke's Toucan (RTYC), which is the 2021 HP30 Class National Championship.

Class winners were presented with Land Union Trophies by Lutz Strangemann at a prizegiving held at the Royal Southern Yacht Club, Commodore Robert Vose announced the winners. Congratulations to Tony & Sally Mack's McFly (RSrnYC), Team Knight Build's Happy Daize (RORC), Phil Plumtree's Swuzzlebubble (WMYC), Michael Bartholomew's Tokoloshe IV (RSrnYC), Jonty Sherwill's Cockleshell (RSrnYC), Timothy Dickinson's Jelly Fish (HISC), and Peter Baines's Felix (HRSC).

HP30 CLASS National Championship

Scoring six bullets from nine races, Glyn Locke's Farr 280 Toucan was crowned HP30 Class National Champion for the second occasion. Lucian Stone's FarEast 28 Vendetta held onto second place by a single point from Jerry Hill's Farr 280 Moral Compass.

"It is great to be racing in a very competitive ten boat fleet," commented Glyn Locke, who races Toucan with two sons and family friends. "Alex drives, while Anthony trims and the crew work was excellent, as it had to be. To come out on top in tricky conditions took a real team effort. I have to say very well done to Lucian and his team on Vendetta." Alex Locke added, "Fantastic racing for everyone, thanks to the Royal Southern Race Team, and Joe Hall from HP30, for the organisation!" -- Louay Habib

Xacobeo Six Metre European Champions
Sanxenxo, Spain: The spectacular final race of the Xacobeo Six Metre European Championship 2021 proved to be an absolute cliff hanger. Initially the fleet was postponed for lack of wind, but the race committee had faith and with just one minute to go before the 15:00 first signal cut off they put the fleet under starters orders for race seven. What followed was a glorious champagne sailing finale to a wonderful championship that confirmed Rainer Muller's 1987 Pelle Petterson designed Thisbe, helmed by Michel Teweles, as the 2021 Six Metre European Champion and Open Division winner, while Jose Cusi's 1947 Arvid Laurin designed Bribon 500, helmed by Pedro Campos, stormed through to reclaim the Classic European Champion title.

Going into the last day Thisbe's nearest rival was Patrick Monteiro De Barros's Seljm

The Classic Division took two attempts at starting, but once underway those who went right made big gains. Sadly, overnight leader Aida, owned by Escotet/Botas and helmed by Javier De La Gandara Alonso, and third placed Alibaba II, skippered by Miguel Lago Cereceda, did not capitalise on the big right shift and both boats rounded the first mark mid-fleet. There were no such errors aboard International Six Metre Class President Louis Heckly's Dix Août or the Sanxenxo based Bribon 500 who both sailed faultlessly to finish first and second respectively. Ossi Paija's Astree III finished third and Alicia Freire Sanchez' Titia, helmed by Mauricio Sanchez-Bella Carswell, was fourth. Aida's seventh place was just sufficient to put her on the second step of the Corinthian podium with Astree III on equal points but taking the bronze medal on count back.

Southern Yacht Club Wins Rolex NYYC Invitational Cup for Second Time
For the second time in three editions, Southern Yacht Club will leave the New York Yacht Club Harbour Court with the most prestigious trophy in Corinthian sailing, the Rolex New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup, firmly in its collective grasp. The team from New Orleans—led by skipper John Lovell and tactician Marcus Eagan, and supported both here and in New Orleans by hundreds, if not thousands of family, friends and fellow members—were incredibly consistent through 12 races over 5 days, with 9 top-four finishes and not a single race result outside the top 10.

In some races, it looked simple as the team parlayed solid starts, prescient tactical calls and superior boatspeed into an express pass to the head of the 19-boat fleet of international yacht club teams. But in other races, particularly in the second half of the regatta, it was a battle as Southern Yacht Club spent a fair bit of time in the back half of the fleet.

Winning boats and nations crowned after successful Nations Trophy
A day full of drama on the water has seen the winning boats and nations crowned in the Nautor's Swan Nations Trophy. Italy's near monopoly in the ClubSwan 36 class wasn't enough to overcome German domination in the ClubSwan 50s, with the result that Germany took first place in the hotly contested Nations Trophy. Italy came second and Russia third.

Balthasar and Earlybird were the best placed ClubSwan 50s overnight, after a good performance from the Belgian boat yesterday. But while Balthasar lost ground today, Sonke Meier-Sawatzki's Niramo came steaming up with three consistently good races. It was just enough to edge Earlybird into second place overall, although there were anxious minutes after the finish while the crews did the maths.

"At the beginning, we hadn't realised it," admits Meier-Sawatzki. "When we counted all the results, we thought we had to be in the top three. Then a couple of press RIBs came next to our boat and we thought, 'nice!'. And then of course were really happy. We have really, really good quality in the fleet and any boat can win. If you're always in the top five you have a good chance."

Throughout the season, winning boats have been contributing points to their flag in the Swan Nations League. This regatta in Palma marked the fourth and final event in the Nations League, deciding the winning nation and winning boats across the four regattas this year.

Topping the leader board by a strong margin, Germany proved itself to be the strongest country in the Nations League, followed by Italy and Russia.

The Nations Trophy and Nations League may have been decided, but all eyes now turn to St Tropez for the final ClubSwan event of the year. The Swan One Design Worlds take place from 13-17 October and offer the teams a shot at the ultimate glory of being declared World Champions in their class.

Defi Azimut - Lorient Agglomeration
You could hardly hope for a more dramatic race packed into less than two days at sea than we saw in the Defi Azimut-Lorient Agglomeration 48-Hours classic, a contest that tested crews and produced another stellar performance at the front by Charlie Dalin and Paul Meilhat on APIVIA.

The beauty of the 48-Hours - the centrepiece of another very successful Defi Azimut-Lorient Agglomeration rendez-vous in Lorient for the IMOCA Class and its suppliers - is that the race directors can place their waypoints perfectly to give a proper all-round test. And so it proved on a 550-mile circuit out into the northern Bay of Biscay.

The 14 double-handed IMOCA 60s went upwind, then downwind VMG and then back on a powerful reach to the finish, set between the Ile de Groix and the mainland coast, on a course that produced a thrilling battle for the minor places on the podium behind the all-conquering yellow and white APIVIA.

Having won the Rolex Fastnet Race in style last month, Dalin and Meilhat continued their dominance of the world's most powerful offshore monohulls in an impressively-optimised boat, deploying a deck-sweeper jib in the light upwind early stages that saw them build a lead of several miles that they never relinquished. -- Ed Gorman
