Out Of The Box, Restarting at Casquets
Warm, hazy sunshine, light easterly winds and big crowds on the beaches, in the vibrant race village and the clifftops sent the third stage of the 52nd La Solitaire du Figaro on its way at midday Sunday from Fecamp with race leader Pierre Quiroga (Skipper Macif 2019) warning that he believes this complicated 624 miles long penultimate stage could be decisive.

The leg opens with a light winds reach the Channel to turn west at South Pullar just as the tide changes. The local sea breeze gave decent conditions to get away from the high, white cliffs which surround Fecamp and the NE'ly gradient wind appeared to have come in early to see the fleet racing north under Code Zero at 8.5 to 9 knots.

After spending most of the second afternoon at sea since leaving Fecamp yesterday shadow boxing with the 20 mile northerly perimeter of the Casquets Traffic Separation Scheme, the leaders on Stage 3 of La Solitaire were taking a much sharper southerly slant in search of the forecast stronger easterly breeze that is expected to roll back up to them from the French coast during the latter part of today, Monday.

All of the top skippers who spoke on the VHF today admitted their original strategy was to go south of this almost square exclusion zone that lies north east of Alderney, but it seems like no one was bold enough to break for the south on what was a not very appetising angle.

It was left to Tanguy Le Turqais (Queguiner - Innoveo), the young Catalan rookie Pep Costa (Cybele Vacances-Team Play To B) and Italian American Francesca Clapcich (Fearless - State Street Marathon Sailing) to lead a group of six round the south of the no go zone. They were making three knots faster than the leaders and pointing more directly towards Land's End, the next waypoint on the 624 miles course to Morlaix Bay via a mark off the southwesternmost tip of Wales.

Xavier Macaire (Groupe SNEF) -winner of the first leg and second overall – has led since the turn at South Pullar mark at around 2230hrs last night. Race leader Pierre Quiroga (Skipper Macif 2019) was leading but chose not to make the early gybe at the mark which is to the east of the isle of Wight, and lost out to Macaire and others, lying fourth this afternoon at 1.2 miles.

Day for the tacticians - Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup gets underway
Photo by Ingrid Abery, www.ingridabery.com. Click on image for photo gallery.

WHAT Owner-drivers and crews taking part in the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup were eased gently into competition off Sardinia's Costa Smeralda today as they fought to make the most of variable sub-10 knot winds out of the northeast quadrant. The light start was appreciated as due to the pandemic this is the first time in two years that the three maxi classes (Mini Maxi 60-80ft; Maxi 80-100ft; Super Maxi 100+ft) have been able to race in their pinnacle event, organised by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda in conjunction with maxi yachting's governing body, the International Maxi Association.

While the YCCS's courses are renowned for their usually strong prevailing northwesterlies that funnel down 'Bomb Alley' between the Costa Smeralda and its spectacular off-lying islands, today's northeasterly wind direction was unusual. The race committee led by Peter Craig therefore sent the fleet off to a weather mark offshore and then on an anticlockwise lap of La Maddalena and Caprera, culminating in a tactical beat up to the Monaci islands before heading south to the finish off Porto Cervo.

The Maxis were the first to get away with Wendy Schmidt's new Botin 85 Deep Blue nailing the start to perfection midline above Sir Lindsay Owen-Jones' Magic Carpet Cubed, with the 100ft Comanche, the highest rated across the fleets, close to the pin. In fact it was only on the run back from Monaci and the final short leg into the finish when the race was decided. Here, with boats coming in on different gybes, it was the Magic Carpet Cubed that beat both the mighty Comanche and George David's Rambler 88 on the water. However under IRC corrected this was only good enough to score the navy Wallycento second with Irvine Laidlaw's four time Maxi class winning Reichel Pugh 82 Highland Fling XI coming out on top. -- James Boyd / International Maxi Association

New 2022 Harken Catalog: Flying off the Presses, Yet Already Here
Harken Catalog Brand New Online Version Is Live Now

The 2022 Harken Catalog is printed and heading for a Harken retailer near you. Thick. Glossy. Pictures. Video. Juicy charts. 292 pages. For some of us, sliding that catalog into a bag of boat show literature is an annual fall ritual. There's no tool more effective for selecting the right Harken equipment to get faster.

One thing to keep in mind: The catalog comes off press this time each year. Harken doesn't stop making new stuff. So the day you get your brand new print version it's already slipping out of date.

We fixed that. There's a new Harken Catalog you can open right now. You'll find it at the bottom of the homepage of Harken.com. Or you can download 2022 right now. It gets updated all year long.

The online Harken Catalog looks just like the print catalog. You can flip pages. You can scan the codes and get to the video. You can call your foredeck guy and immediately get on the same page. It IS the Harken catalog. There are, however, two small differences:

1. It's always up to date.
2. It will never give you a paper cut.

Greystones J/122 'Kaya' is Crowned Overall ICRA Champion at Dun Laoghaire
Photo by David Branigan, www.oceansport.ie. Click on image for photo gallery.

ICRA Greystones Sailing Club's Frank Whelan and the crew of Kaya emerged as overall winners of the annual Irish Cruiser Racing Association National Championships on Dublin Bay today (Sunday 5th September 2021).

Four straight class wins meant the final day wasn't needed for Whelan's team who won the Class Zero title as Afloat reports here plus the overall event win.

Prizes were presented at the National Yacht Club who hosted the 2021 event, its first staging in 25 months due to the pandemic.

80 crews entered from 17 clubs around Ireland to decide four titles under the IRC rating system.

The overall event win is calculated using an ICRA formula based on results, class size and performance rating.

The ICRA National Championships 2022 are scheduled to be sailed at Cork Week in July next year which will also mark the delayed festivities marking the 300th anniversary of the Royal Cork YC.

Two handed marks the spot - Aeolos Composites
Aeolos Composites Two-time winner of the Silverrudder Hans Genthe explains his radical new doublehanded raceboat concept

Aeolos Yachts is addicted to scientific approaches. The base for our yacht design is market research and competitor analysis to understand the customer benefits. Gifford Wins US Grand Slam - Three-peat for RNZYS
Photo by Lexi Pline, lexiplinephotography.com Grand Slam
Alastair Gifford from the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron (RNZYS) has secured the win at the US Grand Slam by finishing third in the final event, The Thompson Cup, hosted by Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club in Oyster Bay, New York.

Gifford competed in all four events of the USA Grand Slam, winning the first two and finishing sixth and third in the last two. The four events include The Chicago Cup, The Detroit Cup, Oakcliff International and The Thompson Cup.

The overall winner of the Grand Slam Series gets an invitation to the Congressional Cup hosted by Long Beach Yacht Club next year. The Congressional Cup is known as the 'grandfather of match racing' and attracts the world's best match racers. Familiar names such as Johnie Berntsson (SWE), Taylor Canfield (USA), Scotty Dickson (USA/NZL), and Ian Williams (GBR) amongst many other top sailors have raced in the Congressional Cup.

Gifford's win follows Jordan Stevenson's win in 2019 with his Vento Racing team and Nick Egnot-Johnson's title claim in 2018 with his KNOTS Racing team. All three teams represented RNZYS and came from the club's Performance Programme (PP), making Gifford's win a three-peat for the Squadron as there was no series in 2020 due to COVID-19 forcing cancellations.

No wind, no race on the opening day of the Star World Championship
The morning of the first day of sailing of the 2021 Star World Championship in Kiel, Germany, didn't look promising. The usual chilly breeze blowing at the 1972 German Olympic venue didn't welcome the 83 teams on their way to the boats. Soon the postponement flag was hoisted and it stayed hanging on the notice pole until 2:00 pm, when also the A flag was hoisted, calling it off for the day. No race could be sailed on the opening of the regatta.

Race Director Mandus Freese is ready to have two races. The first start is scheduled for 11 am, however, the wind is looking light again, and could alter the plans.

Dragon Edinburgh Cup
Out in front from the first beat was Patrick Gifford's Basilisk 515 coming in from the Edinburgh side to lead around the first windward mark followed by Royal Forth Yacht Club local sailors Wiz Too, Richard Davies' Flotation and Badger.

Basilisk looked to be comfortably in the lead going through the first gate but it was the second beat and a move of the windward mark that saw some change in positions.

Gery Trentesaux's Bande a Part FRA 428 inched past Flotation, Badger and Basilisk to lead up to the second windward mark and through the final gate.

But it was not to be for the French team and it was Basilisk, the vintage Dragon sailed by experienced team Patrick Gifford, Geoff Butcher and Philip Catmur who sailed an excellent race to take line honours in race six.

Badger held on to their second place with Jerboa, Flotation and Bande a Part taking third, fourth and fifth place respectively.

A superb win for Basilisk securing the Corinthian title, helm Patrick Gifford said once ashore "We felt we were at the back end of the boats that were going fast all week. So it was very nice to be up there and beat them. It has been a good event, it is a great open space to race in."

Final report and full results

Final top five
1. Badger - Tom Vernon, GBR, 9 points
2. Jerboa - Gavia Wilkinson-Cox, GBR, 11
3. Bluebottle - Graham Bailey, GBR, 15
4. Bande a Part - Gery Trentesaux, FRA, 17
5. Fei-Lin's Flirtation - Ron James, GBR, 22
