Stage 2 Winner Pierre Quiroga Leads La Solitaire du Figaro
Winning the 490 nautical miles Stage 2 of the 52nd La Solitaire du Figaro, which finished into Fécamp east of Le Havre this morning, Pierre Quiroga (Skipper Macif 2019) takes the overall lead on the Provisional General Classification by 1hr and 36 mins after Stage 1 winner Xavier Macaire (Groupe SNEF) had to dive on Monday evening to remove a fish pot from the keel of his Beneteau Figaro 3.

Macaire still lies second overall but, after losing touch with the leading pack, crossed the line today in 14th over two and a half hours after 28-year-old Quiroga who scored the first Stage win of his career on his sixth participation.

Quiroga, who was second on the long offshore Stage 1, sailed a textbook leg, twice taking the chance to split from the leading pack and making decent gains to ensure he was 56 minutes and 19 seconds clear of second placed Tom Laperche (CMB Bretagne Performance). Achille Nebout (Primeo Energie - Amarris) took third across the finish line this morning.

Quiroga who originates from Marseille and is a past French Olympic sailing squad sailor who raced in the Laser and the 470, finished ninth overall on the last edition of the race in 2020 and sixth in 2018. He won the long offshore stage of this season's curtain raiser in March, the Solo Maître CoQ.

It was a generally disappointing stage for the top international La Solitaire du Figaro racers. Neither Briton Alan Roberts (Seacat Services) nor Ireland's Tom Dolan (Smurfit Kappa-Kingspan) started the race well from Lorient on Sunday. But Roberts on his eighth La Solitaire climbed through the fleet to lie eighth during the first day but he lost places and time on the beath to the Channel Islands and crossed the finish line today in 16th, 2 hours 32 minutes after stage winner Quiroga.

Dolan, who was fifth overall last year, crossed nearly an hour after Roberts – who wins the VIVI Trophy prize for the leg. On the General Classification they lie 17th and 18th, Dolan leads Roberts by two tiny seconds after six days and 14 hours of racing.

Rankings:

Leg 3, 624 nm from Fecapm to the Bay of Morlaix starts Sunday September 5.

Another Exceptional Day at the J/70 Europeans in Denmark
Copenhagen, Denmark: Day two at the J/70 European Championship offered just as amazing sailing conditions as the previous day: smooth waters and a stable Northerly breeze of 6-8 knots. The final three qualifying races were conducted on both the Northerly and Southern courses in full view from Skovshoved Harbour, Copenhagen. Thursday, the 98 competing boats will race in the Silver and Gold fleets (49 boats each), with the latter competing for the title of J/70 European Champion 2021 through to Saturday, September 4. Scoring will start anew for the beginning of tomorrow's Final Series.

As six races in the Qualifying Series were completed, the discard race came into play. Maintaining hold of the leaderboard is three-time J/70 European Champion Claudia Rossi of Italy with 12 net points. Spain's Jose Maria Torcida Seghers moved into second place overall with 17 net points. Tied on points at 18 for the next two positions are James Peters/Jonathan Calascione of Great Britain and Magnus Simon of Germany. Seventeen countries are competing in the Championship.

Auscrew - 50 Years On
Auscrew "If you can remember it, you weren't there", a phrase often used in connection with Woodstock, but equally applicable to the infamous Auscrew parties of the Admiral's Cup era of offshore racing. Some of those who pretend to remember them are having a fiftieth anniversary lunch in Cowes, Saturday 4th September, at which they will attempt to recall the stories of yesteryear.

Yes, it was back in the glory days of the Admiral's Cup, when as many as nineteen nations sent three boat teams to Cowes, England, to contest what was known as the World Championship of offshore racing, the fabulous seventies, that Auscrew was formed.

The story goes that two Aussie yachties, Peter Doran and Mike Hesse, were sharing an apartment in London, while sailing out of Cowes at the weekend. This was 1971, and upwards of twenty boats were contesting the trials to select three boats for the British Admiral's Cup Team. Over a few beers they worked out that at least five of the boats had one or more Aussies in the crew.

Peter Doran was sailing on Noryema and Mike Hesse on Mersea Oyster, they decided that this dependence on Australian yachting skills should be recognized by the creation of an exclusive membership club for Aussies and named it "Auscrew".

The first ever Auscrew party was held that year on a boat called Morwenna, belonging to legendary boatbuilder Tom Richardson of the famous Elephant Boatyard. It is believed the second party, held in '73 (an Admiral's Cup year) was in a boatshed recently bought by Roger Motson, an English member of Auscrew. Legend has it that to gain entry to the party, guests had to pass through an opening little bigger than a cat flap, and some distinguished members of the yachting fraternity were seen squeezing through the entrance.

As was obligatory in the seventies a club tie was created featuring a map of Australia upside down, enclosing the words 'AUS-CREW 1971', and membership would also be extended to the other English crewmen aboard each boat with their tie defaced by a diagonal red bar. Owners would also be allowed to join with their ties bearing the mark 'OWNER' beneath the logo.

In this heyday of the Admiral's Cup Auscrew membership grew rapidly, as did the popularity of the Cowes Week party, which had graduated to Spencer's Rigging loft, where all were entertained with bawdy tales from the likes of David "Fang" Kilponen, together with the great and good of yacht design and racing such as Ted "Tenacious" Turner, German Frers, Jim "Kialoa" Kilroy, Dick Carter, Jim Hardy, Syd Fischer, Ed Dubois and many others.

Off season gatherings in the English countryside built on the legend, with awards for squash, clay pigeon shooting, tiddlywinks and many other worthy activities.

Sadly the demise of the Admiral's Cup, with the last event held in 2003 and won by Australia, saw Auscrew parties also consigned to the history books. However to celebrate 50 years of Auscrew, a reunion of Auscrew members and their partners will be held Saturday 4th September at "The Prospect", Sir Max Aitken's old home in Cowes with more than fifty expected to attend. It is interesting to note that Kurdurmurkarae (sic) Mr Peter Doran (Global) and Dr Roger Motson (defaced UK) are now also members of the hallowed Royal Yacht Squadron in Cowes and that in order to maintain some of the original larrikin character of the eclectic club, it is proposed to induct CYCA Life Member Peter Shipway as an honorary member of Auscrew at the reunion.

If we can remember the party, we will let you know how it turns out! -- John Roberson

Trofeo Princesa Sofia Mallorca Will Be Back In 2022
The Organizing Committee of the Trofeo Princesa Sofía Mallorca announces the cancellation of the 51st edition scheduled from 2nd to 9th October 2021.

After a very successful 50th edition in 2019, the Trofeo Princesa Sofía Mallorca could not take place in 2020 and had to postpone the 2021 edition to October because of the pandemic. However, after assessing the new calendars of the Olympic classes, the Organizing Committee has decided to organize the 51st edition in 2022.

This last decision has been made following careful consideration of the tight autumn season regatta calendar with unavoidable clashes of dates that have had an impact on the number of entries as well as the complexity of international travel in some parts of the world.

Ferran Muniesa, the Trofeo Princesa Sofía Mallorca Race Manager, outlines, "This announcement is made with great regret and we thank all teams for their understanding, but we look positively forward to the 2022 edition with confirmed dates for the regatta from 2nd to 9th April".

Bacardi Cup Winners Stake Defence Of Star Class Worlds
Mateusz Kusznierewicz (POL) and Bruno Prada (BRA) triumphed at the 2021 Bacardi Cup and are now heading to the 2021 Star Worlds supported by Bacardi.

The partnership between Bacardi and the Star Class sees each year's Bacardi Cup winners invited to compete at the next Star Class World Championship with sponsorship support from Bacardi. Launched as a natural evolution of their ninety-four year partnership, 2021 marks the third time Bacardi and the Star Class have dovetailed their support.

Kusznierewicz and Prada earned their Bacardi sponsorship from an overwhelming display of dominance in March this year, winning the 94th Bacardi Cup and successfully defending their 2020 title. The duo also went down in history as the only team to have ever rolled an all-win scorecard.

Kusznierewicz and Prada's roll of excellence extends beyond back to back Bacardi Cup wins, with their punishingly accurate partnership also delivering victory at the 2019 Star World Championship.

The covid-19 pandemic forced the cancellation of the 2020 Star Worlds in Miami, so their title defence will unfold on the waters of Kiel, Germany from 4-11 September 2021. The Star Class line-up is back to full strength, with the provisional entry list counting a field of 166 sailors from seventeen nations across Europe, North and South America and Oceania. Racing gets underway from Monday 6 September with the traditional Star Class format of one race per day for a total of 6 races, with 5 to count.

YJA Stoneways Marine Yachtsman of the Year, Young Sailor of the Year and Young Journalist of the Year 2021 shortlist announced

Of particular note is the strength and depth of the entries, recognising just how diverse the sport of sailing is.

The YJA Committee deliberated long and hard on a wonderful list of nominated sailors for this year's Awards - the breadth of sailing talent is simply awesome, and some extremely tough choices had to be made to produce the shortlist.

Jacques Rogge
Jacques Rogge It is with great sadness that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announces the passing of former IOC President Count Jacques Rogge. He was 79 years old.

Rogge was the eighth President of the IOC, from 2001 to 2013, after which he became Honorary President.

He was married to Anne, and leaves a son, a daughter and two grandchildren.

Rogge was an orthopaedic surgeon with a degree in sports medicine.

A life-long sports fan and an accomplished athlete, Rogge was a Belgian rugby champion and represented his country on the national team. He was a 16-time Belgian national champion and a world champion in sailing. He also competed in sailing at three editions of the Olympic Games, in 1968, 1972 and 1976, in the Finn class.

After his career as an athlete he became President of the Belgian and European Olympic Committees, and was elected President of the IOC in 2001. After his IOC Presidency, he also served as a Special Envoy for Youth, Refugees and Sport to the United Nations.

As a mark of respect, the Olympic flag will be flown at half-mast for five days at Olympic House, at The Olympic Museum and at all IOC properties, and the IOC invites all National Olympic Committees and International Federations to join in this gesture of remembrance and honour.

Following a private family ceremony, a public memorial service will take place later in the year, where members and friends of the Olympic Movement will be able to remember his life and his great contribution to sport.

* From Dr Frank Newton ( Sorebones):

The sad death of Dr Jacques Rogge is a blow to the sport of sailing and in particular to the International Finn Class. I worked with 'Jackie' for many years in the ISAF Medical Commission, once it became active after years of never meeting. Dr Rogge, Dr Louis Doreste and I were the Commission. We investigated sports medical problems that were highlighted by our sport and he made original investigations into the bio mechanical demands on the body of dinghy sailors in hiking. These were published in medical journals. With my own work they enabled me to persuade the Federation that heavy weight jackets should be banned for youth sailors and later for adults. Many painful backs and knees were thus prevented.

I joined him in Brussels at the Belgian Olympic HQ, where he was President, and together we wrote the first anti Doping Rules for our sport. Without such rules enacted by the reluctant governing body there was a strong chance that sailing could have been excluded from the Olympic Games. In its Medical Code the IOC made it clear that failure of a sport to ban doping, and to carry out regular testing , in its rules opened a sport to exclusion.

The RYA was under the same threat to our Sports Council funding and for several years earlier I had tested in UK, using paragraphs in the 'Notice of Race', before drug taking was banned in the rules of the sport of sailing. Jacques himself competed as a Finn sailor for Belgium in three Olympic Games in 1968 , 1972 and 1976. Without his strong support I fear the class would have vanished from the Games years ago.

When he became President of the IOC he gave up Chair of the, now active, ISAF Medical Commission and I had the honour of taking his place for ten years. In that time he gave me strong support when asked for his opinion. His son Philipe followed him as Finn Class president and Finn sailor Paul Henderson, past ISAF President, also strongly supported a class that has been cast adrift, denying sailors of bigger stature an Olympic future.

He was a great friend and I am sure helped in securing the Olympic Games for London in 2012. I will always remember his voice when he announced the decision in favour of ' Lon Don' A great voice for our sport who will be sorely missed.
