Figaro Stage 2: Quiroga leads into The Channel
With well over half of the 490 nautical miles La Solitaire du Figaro's Stage 2 course from Lorient to Fécamp completed by late this Monday afternoon, the leaders were negotiating the rocky North Western tip of Brittany ready to take on a much more technical, testing upwind section, tacking to windward towards the finish where the winner is anticipated early on Wednesday morning.

Pierre Quiroga (Skipper MACIF 2019), the 28-year old skipper originally from the Mediterranean who finished second on the first leg, led the fleet around the corner into the English Channel this afternoon, but his margin over Tom Laperche (Bretagne CMB Performance) was tiny - just a few hundred metres - as the pair made just over eight knots upwind. The leading five boats were within one mile of Quiroga with General Classification leader Xavier Macaire, poised in sixth 1.2 miles behind.

After a bad start on Sunday afternoon which - he admitted today - saw him next to last at the first mark, Britain's Alan Roberts (Seacat Services) was holding a solid eighth place after having rounded the Rochebonne plateau buoy - off Les Sables d'Olonne - in 12th. Roberts has made place gains on the long, tight reach and close hauled stage up the west coast of Brittany but lost a little distance on the lead group.

The leaders were tucked in close to the coast at the point of Brittany, trying to hide from the outgoing, contrary tide. There could be some compression in the early evening if they are held up much, but the North Easterly breezes are set to remain until the finish which will be set close in to the small port town which is cut out of the high, white 'falaises' or cliffs made famous by the painting by Monet in 1881.

4th Palermo-Montecarlo title for YCM's Guido Miani
Click on image for photo gallery.

Palermo-Montecarlo Suspense, light airs, breezes, breathtaking scenery and a widely varying 54-strong fleet contributed to the success of the 16th Palermo-Montecarlo (21-26 August), organised by Circolo della Vela Sicilia in partnership with Yacht Club de Monaco and Yacht Club Costa Smeralda.

First across the finish in elapsed time of this 480nm offshore race from Gulf of Mondello in Sicily to Monaco, via Sardinia and Corsica, was YCM's Guido Miani associated with Furio Benussi on the 30m Arca SGR after 59 hours 3 minutes 8 seconds. Sailing with his son Daniel and nephew Francesco Vauban it's his fourth title on this Mediterranean classic, having won it twice in corrected time (2007 and 2008) and elapsed time (2013). It follows their victory in elapsed time early this year at the 68th Rolex Giraglia.

Behind them, it was a nail-biting battle for 2nd place between Pendragon VI and Aragon, won by Laurie Davidson 69 Pendragon VI over the last few metres. Winner in corrected time was the Circolo della Vela Sicilia J122 Joy led by Edoardo Bonanno and Gaetano Figlia di Granara.

Many big names in sailing were competing, including Kito de Pavant and Gwen Gbick aboard their Class40 HBF - Reforest'Action, this being their last official competition before the Transat Jacques Vabre. Also participating was YCM's Neil Cheston (Eupraxia) who had members of the YCM's adult sailing division on board experiencing their first offshore race.

This race is a stage in the Italian Offshore Championship, organised by the Italian Sailing Federation, and the International Maxi Association's Mediterranean Maxi Offshore Challenge. The record set in 2015 by Esimit Europa 2 of 47 hours 46 minutes 48 seconds in optimal conditions remains to be beaten.

GORI Propeller - Have you got the need for speed?

GORI Propeller It's the small incremental advances we make to a yacht that when combined bring formidable results. Whether that be breaking records, looking for a race win, or simply finding that smooth ride, it's time to look below your waterline.

Breaking records - choose a GORI Propeller as that's what some of the fastest sailors choose. Two big launches in recent weeks have chosen GORI Propellers: the latest IMOCA 60 and the new 101ft ULTIM. 11th Hour Racing Team's IMOCA 60 designed for fully crewed, short-handed and solo offshore racing will set sail with a GORI Racing Propeller whilst the latest Francois Gabart Trimaran SVT Lazartigue 101ft Ultim is equipped with a GORI three-blade propeller. We'll be following their progress as these teams prepare for their first big races.

Improve performance - choose a GORI Propeller as less drag means greater efficiency. GORI Propellers have by far the lowest drag propeller whilst sailing with many yards fitting them as standard. Remember you can always retrofit a GORI Propeller.

Life is about the journey not the destination - choose a GORI Propeller. They offer by far the smoothest propeller based on proven design and engineering with the best manoeuvrability. So, if you want to get to your destination for sundowners and not spill your G&T on the way, choose GORI Propeller.

The whole is greater than the sum of the parts. Find out more on the GORI Racing Propeller - www.gori-propeller.com

Burnham Week
The Squibs turned out in force for the five-race series. Photo by Roger Mant. Click on image for photo gallery.

Burnham Week Burnham-on-Crouch, UK: The opening weekend of Burnham Week 2021 (28 August-4 September) got off to a cracking start.

A gusty northerly breeze and classic, strong east coast tides made the Bank Holiday Weekend Series challenging but the 115-strong entry generally enjoyed highly competitive racing throughout the weekend.

In total 15 classes including a range of cruising yachts, local one-designs and dinghies, as well as gigs, stand up paddleboard, kayaks and canoes, supported this premier east coast regatta, making it one of the largest entries the regatta has seen for some years. It was also good to see the multihulls enjoying fast and furious racing for the MOCRA (Multihull Offshore Cruising & Racing Association) three-day, class national championship.

Local One Designs

Burnham Week wouldn't be complete without local one-design keelboats not least because they consistently make up a large part of the overall fleet. They are also pretty, iconic, suitable for all sailing abilities and, most of all, extremely competitive.

The Royal Burnham One-Design, which turns 90 next year, mustered the largest local one-design fleet with eight boats and, as always, the fleet enjoyed close racing.

The Bank Holiday Weekend Silver Tankard is the main competitive attraction in the Royal Corinthian One-Design fleet true to form, the long weekend produced some top class racing. It was also a weekend of consistency with the top five boats finishing in exactly the same order on the first two days.

The elegant East Coast One-Designs made a welcome appearance this year and, although only two boats in the fleet, Widgeon (Ian Wilson/Dan Hally), and Wraith (Jerry Mecoy/Mark Ellis) made the most of the challenging conditions. However, it was Widgeon that always had the upper hand, finishing with two first places. -- Sue Pelling

Drama & Disputes - SailGP Event 4 - Aarhus, Denmark
From broken boats to broken bodies, the fourth stage of the SailGP season started in explosive fashion as the teams prepared for the mid season event. Poll shows vast majority of Kiwis want Team NZ to defend America's Cup at home
A new poll shows Kiwis strongly want Team New Zealand to defend the America's Cup in New Zealand but are split on extra funding from the government.

Team New Zealand will reveal where the next edition of the Cup will be hosted in an announcement on September 17 with Auckland still an outside chance but battling heavyweight funding from three overseas cities with Cork in Ireland, Jeddah in Saudi Arabia and one other venue reportedly on the short-list.

The poll, conducted by Curia Market research involving 1000 people over the age of 18 drawn randomly from 24,000 telephone numbers from August 12-17, shows 72 per cent are in favour of the America's Cup being held here next time.

Only 14 per cent wanted the Cup to go overseas with the rest unsure or refusing to answer the question. -- Justin Chisholm

* From John Walker:

As always, Magnus Wheatley has his finger on the pulse and his comments on the lure of the desert Emirates and Kingdoms struck a chord. Back in 1992, I watched the UAE embrace offshore powerboat racing, Class I in particular, and their enthusiasm, panache and seemingly bottomless money pit were applied wisely and well to bring the quality and facilities of offshore racing up several levels. Working in the press office at the Dubai International Marine Club (DIMC), I saw first-hand what harnessing the resources of a government seeking to establish the name of Emirates Airlines internationally could achieve and Emirates and Dubai Duty-Free became the template for what could really be delivered by linking sponsorship of sport to marketing.

They could also make things happen at an astonishing rate. The first time we raced in Dubai, we of the press corps were taken one afternoon to what were then sand dunes at Jumeirah; seven months later, they had built the DIMC with its marina and overnight before the opening, an entire lawn was lifted from one of the beachside palaces and re-laid in front of the Club. Even then, 29 years ago, the man in charge of bringing sailing to the Club talked of hosting international regattas and was talking of hosting the Americas Cup at some point in the future. If it ends up there I would not be surprised and they will apply themselves to staging an event that will do for sailing what they have done for other high ticket marine sports.
