Lidecis and Smith Win Star North Americans
The last day of the 2021 North American Championship started out with quite a long wait on the water for the 30 teams participating in it. The clouds covering the sky wouldn't allow the breeze to fill in on the racecourse, but PRO Bruce Golison believed one race could be finished on the last day of the event.

And so it was, around 2:30pm local time a light wind picked up and the starting procedures began. The provisional leaders, Eric Doyle and Payson Infelise had a five point margin this morning and had to protect it from five teams, from second to sixth, from Andy MacDonald with Brad Nichol to North American title defender Augie Diaz, racing this year with Bruno Prada (BRA).

At the last top mark Erik Lidecis with Greg Smith rounded first, and with only six points between them and yesterday's leaders and the others direct competitors well behind, they started the final leg as North American Champions for 2021.

Augie Diaz and Bruno Prada took over Lidecis/Smith in the last run and won the final race putting up a great fight to defend the title. It wasn't enough though to snatch the event win from Erik Lidecis and Greg Smith, who finished second right behind them and won the 2021 North American Championship in Newport Beach, California.

The limelight moves now to Europe for the so longed 2021 World Championship in Kiel, Germany, from September the 6th to the 11th, after its postponement in 2020.

Mikmaks Navigator Jesse Osborn wins the Mark Rudiger Award
Honolulu, Hawaii: After careful review of the materials submitted to support his application, a review panel from the Transpacific Yacht Club have determined that Jesse Osborn wins the Mark S. Rudiger Celestial Navigation Trophy for the recently completed 2021 Transpac. Osborn was navigator aboard Justin Waite's Stevens 47 Mikmaks.

The trophy is awarded to the navigator who submits celestial navigation worksheets or evidence of traditional navigation to the finish inspectors immediately after finishing, and whose work is selected as the "best" by an impartial panel of judges. First awarded in 2011, the trophy itself is an antique brass 1905 T. Hemsley & Son silver-vernier A-frame sextant, donated by Stan Honey, which receives plaques for each winner.

69F With Persico standing behind these carefully tested one design foilers and Santi Lange standing behind training up their young crews, grand prix foiling really did just get much more accessible

The 69F Youth Foiling Gold Cup creates a pathway for young sailors who aspire one day to race in the America's Cup. While the AC75s look like they've splashed down from another planet, the Persico 69F is an accessible, affordable three-person foiler that helps to bridge that huge technology and performance gap.

The Youth Foiling Gold Cup is aimed at under-25 sailors who want to step up to the challenges of highspeed foiling, and it takes place over four events during 2021 which conclude with Cagliari, Sardinia in early November. However, the YFGC is only one part of a much bigger project.

Gifford Wins 2021 Detroit Cup
Detroit, Michigan: In a first-to-five point showdown that went to the fourth match, Alastair Gifford from New Zealand and his team of Devon Baker and Frank Dair have today won the 13th edition of the International Match Race for the Detroit Cup hosted by Bayview Yacht Club. His rival in the Finals was local-based Ryan Seago who was winner of the four Round Robins sailed among six participating teams racing equally-matched Ultimate 20's.

A total of 79 matches were run in four days at Bayview YC's shorefront venue on the Detroit River in light to moderate easterlies that appeared every day of the event. This was sufficient to complete four Round Robins and Semi-finals through yesterday, leaving the Finals and Petit Finals for today.

Giffford's win of this Grade 2 event replicates the victory he had in Chicago at the first stop of the US GRAND SLAM tour and puts the team in a strong position going into the next Tour stop later this week at the Oakcliff International in Oyster Bay, New York. In addition to valuable Grade 2 points On the World Sailing Match Race Ranking List, the winner of the GRAND SLAM series earns a qualification spot at the 2022 Congressional Cup at Long Beach YC.

Final results 2021 Detroit Cup:
1. Alastair Gifford (NZL)
2. Ryan Seago (USA)
3. James Pinder (GBR)
4. Ruairi Finnegan (IRL)
5. Ansgar Jordan (USA)
6. Sam Bartel (USA)

Australia Crowned Rockwool Denmark Sail Grand Prix
In some of the lightest winds of the season so far, which made foiling a real challenge for the teams, Japan won both of Saturday's two fleet races to mount a remarkable comeback and qualify for the Final, where they were joined by Australia and Great Britain.

The breeze picked up slightly for the Final, but the 'wind-whisperer' Nathan Outteridge could not overcome rival Slingsby, the Season 1 champion, who celebrated a second successive event win with an on-boat champagne moment

The Brits, meanwhile, rounded out the podium after penalty drama in the Final forced the team to drop behind Japan, though Ainslie and his team were visibly aggrieved at the controversial decision.

Final results
1. Tom Slingsby, AUS, 10 points
2. Nathan Outteridge, JPN, 9
3. Ben Ainslie, GBR, 8
4. Jimmy Spithill, USA, 7
5. Peter Burling, NZL, 6
6. Nicolai Sehested, DEN, 5
7. Phil Robertson, Spain, 4
8. Billy Besson, FRA, 3

Heerema and Palsson Victorious at Dragon Gold Cup 2021 by Yanmar
Two final races in glorious sun and moderate breeze completed the six race Dragon Gold Cup 2021 by Yanmar in Marstrand. The regatta ended on high drama when no less than five of the top ten boats were disqualified under black flag in the penultimate race, throwing the overall results wide open. Those on the wrong side of the line included Dirk Pramann, Dmitry Samokhin, Andy Beadsworth, Torvar Mirsky and Jens Christensen, who had gone into the day 2nd, 4th, 5th, 6th and 8th respectively.

Going into the final race Heerema and his team had a sixteen point delta on nearest rival Pedro Andrade so their focus was on starting cleanly and staying out of trouble. Andrade got a great start at the committee boat end, tacked right straight away and went on to lead the race comfortably all the way to the finish. Behind him a chasing pack soon broke off the front of the fleet and a tight battle ensued between Andy Beadsworth, Magnus Holmberg, Dmitry Samokhin, David Gilmour and Pieter Heerema. Despite winning the race in spectacular style Andrade knew his reign as Dragon Gold Cup Champion had come to an end as Heerema crossed the line in fourth behind Beadsworth and Samokhin. Holmberg took fifth and Sweden's Martin Pålsson sixth.

In the overall standings Pieter Heerema claimed victory by thirteen points. Pedro Andrade took second and the Japanese team of David Gilmour, Sam Gilmour and Yashiro Yaju sailing YRed and representing event sponsor Yanmar, finished third.

This will be a particularly sweet victory for Pieter Heerema who has spent some 30 years trying to win the Gold Cup and had developed something of a bridesmaid's reputation having made the lower slopes of the podium in 2013, 2018 and 2019, but never quite made it to the top step.

Overall Top Ten
1. Troika - Pieter Heerema, NED, 17
2. Pedro Andrade - Petti Portugal, POR, 30
3. David Gilmour - JPN, 65
4. Martin Palsson - Nono, SWE, 75
5. Jan Secher - Miss Behaviour, SWE, 76
6. Magnus Holmberg - Sophie Racing, SUI, 78
7. Frank Berg - My Way, DEN, 81
8. Anatoly Loginov - Annapurna, RUS, 91
9. Benjamin Morgen - Rosie, GER, 92
10. Nicola Friesen - Khaleesi, GER, 97

SESCA's 40th Anniversary celebrated with Antigua Sailing Day Regatta
Members of the St Edmundsbury Sailing & Canoeing Association (UK) celebrated the Club's 40th Anniversary, at Lackford Lake near Bury St Edmunds, last Sunday, with the running of the Club's 8th Antigua Sailing Day Regatta. The event was generously sponsored by Greene King and the Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority.

The idea to establish a sailing club, at the then recently flooded gravel pit, was originally conceived, in the late 70's, by the sailing section of the Greene King Sports & Social Club. The Club was officially founded in 1981 with financial assistance from Bury St Edmunds Rotary, the St Edmundsbury Yachting Association and Bury St Edmunds Council.

Since then, the Club has been built up through the vision, perseverance and efforts of its members and the assistance of St Edmundsbury Borough Council and other benefactors to become the flourishing watersports centre that it is today. The Club has now over 240 active members and provides the watersports facilities for the Bury St Edmunds; Newmarket and Mildenhall Sea Cadets; Suffolk Scouts; WASH disabled sailing; Young People Afloat (a sailing youth club); RAF Honnington Kayak Club and Priory and Culford Schools.

Competitors were welcomed by gusty and shifty conditions, which proved challenging and provided some entertaining viewing for the spectators onshore. The open event was won by Sam and Margot Parrett sailing a Wanderer; with Mike Steele second, in a Laser, and Jon and Nate Senior third, in another Wanderer. The junior event was won by Bertie Parrett, in his Optimist. Bertie also came a commendable fifth in the open event.

It is hoped that Antigua Sailing Week, which was cancelled this year due to the Covid epidemic, will be held again from 30 April to 6 May 2022.
