2021 Detroit Cup commences with 8 flights completed
Today had a promising start to the Bayview Yacht Club's 2021 edition of the Grade 2 Detroit Cup, second stop on the GRAND SLAM tour, with 8 flights completed in the first stage of the event. Six teams from the GBR, IRL, NZL, and the USA are in attendance this year, with a lot of young new talent on hand to compete in BYC’s fleet of equally-matched Ultimate 20’s.

This talent includes Ryan Seago (USA), Alastair Gifford (NZL), James Pinder (GBR), Ansgar Jordan (USA), Ruari Finnegan (IRL), Sam Bartel (USA) and all of their crews.

The day started with light air and a forecast for much of the same all day, yet into the second flight of the first round robin the easterly breeze picked up enough to complete this round and three flights of the next round before fading out in late afternoon.

Racing will continue tomorrow through Sunday and include more round robin racing, followed by Semi-Finals and Finals on Sunday.

The other events in the GRAND SLAM Series are the Chicago YC/CMRC Invitational, the Oakcliff International, and the Thompson Cup hosted by Seawanhaka Corinthian YC in Oyster Bay, New York. Among other things, the winner of the GRAND SLAM series earns a qualification spot at the Congressional Cup at Long Beach YC.

Results after 8 flights:
1. James Pinder, GBR, 6 points
2. Ryan Seago, USA, 6
3. Alastair Gifford, NZL, 5
4. Ruairi Finnegan, IRL, 3
5. Ansgar Jordan, USA, 2
6. Sam Bartel, USA, 1

SailGP lineup back to full strength in Aarhus
Aarhus Bay, playground to the inaugural ROCKWOOL Denmark Sail Grand Prix, is proving itself as a drama-filled stage for this week’s return to SailGP racing action. With a capsize by the Danish team and a new speed record for the British already on the books during practice racing, fans are sure to witness a spectacular main event on August 20-21.

The Danish event sees the return of both sail racing giants and Olympians who will reunite with their SailGP Teams to battle for supremacy on Danish waters. Ben Ainslie has returned to the driver’s seat for Great Britain, along with a new family member to cheer him on. And, Peter Burling and Blair Tuke are back in charge of the New Zealand SailGP Team following silver medal success in Tokyo.

For the home team, Nicolai Sehested will be looking to newly crowned golden girl Anne-Marie Rindom – fresh from success at the Tokyo Olympics – to help catapult the team to the front of the highly-competitive fleet. Sehested will be relying on her local knowledge, alongside fellow Olympic gold medalist Martin Kirketerp, following many years of Olympic training on Aarhus Bay.

After suffering a capsize during practice, Sehested is eager to put this behind the team and get back on course to impress the hometown crowd with a win.

The ROCKWOOL Denmark Sail Grand Prix will comprise two days of racing with five fleet races followed by a podium race, with the top three boats in the ultimate showdown to decide the winner on Saturday, August 21.

Fans unable to attend can watch all the action broadcast live in 175 territories, including via TV2 in Denmark. Full details can be found at SailGP.com/Watch

Star North American Championship
A light breeze day kicked off the 2021 Star North American Championship in Newport Beach, California. 7-9 knots from the south made it possible for the 30-boat fleet to finish the two races scheduled for the day, with two different winners, but an undisputed leader of the day.

Eric Doyle and Payson Infelise, close the first day of the North Americans in the top spot of the ranking with a second place and a bullet. The first win of the day went to George Szabo and Guy Avellon, in second overall after a fifth in the second race. In third we see Jim Buckingham and Phil Toth, making the best out of their extensive local knowledge, but at this very early stage there are two other teams tied for third: Danny and Paul Cayard – with the world-renowned skipper crewing for his son – and John MacCausland with Brian Terhaar.

Star World Championship
The list of favourites at the 99th Star Class World Championships in Kiel (4 to 11 September) is long. After two title candidates, the reigning European Champions and two-time Olympic participants Enrico Chieffi and Ferdinando Colaninno (Italy) and the European Vice-Champions Hubert Merklebach/Kilian Weise (Überlingen), had registered early, the list of stars among the competitors has grown steadily. A total of 86 crews from 18 nations have registered for the World Championships, which will be held during Kiel Week (4-12 September). "The number of participants exceeds our expectations. We are happy about the qualitatively and quantitatively strong field of participants," explains the Head of Organisation Dirk Ramhorst (Kiel Yacht-Club).

The list of competitors looks like a Who's Who of the Star class. Among others, defending champions Mateusz Kusznierewicz/Bruno Prada (Poland/Brazil), three-time World Championship runner-up Diego Negri (Italy) with Frithjof Kleen (Berlin), two-time Olympian Jake Lilley (Australia/2016 and 2020 in the Finn), five-time European Laser Champion and two-time Olympic medallist Tonci Stipanovic (Croatia) have entered, Eivind Melleby (Norway/Olympian, Volvo Ocean Race sailor 2008/2009 and Star Class World Champion 2017) and five-time Olympian Xavier Rohart (France), who won a total of seven medals at World Championships in the Finn and later in the Star. -- Hermann Hell

U.S. Women’s Match Racing Championship - August 19 - 22
U.S. Women’s Match Racing Championship - August 19 - 22 The San Diego Yacht Club and US Sailing have invited 10 teams to Southern California for three days of exciting racing at the 2021 U.S. Women’s Match Racing Championship.

Skipper Allie Blecher (Long Beach, Calif.) and her crew including main trimmer and tactician Beka Schiff (Los Angeles, Calif.), trimmer Krysia Pohl (San Francisco, Calif.) and bowperson Ali Blumenthal (Bellport, N.Y.) won the 2019 U.S. Women’s Match Racing Championship in Detroit. Blecher, Schiff, and Blumenthal have returned to defend their title from two years ago and this year they will be joined by crew Simone Staff (Los Angeles, Calif.).

Returning to compete for her fourth Allegra Knapp Mertz Trophy is Nicole Breault (San Francisco, Calif.). The three-time champion skipper earned U.S. Women’s Match Racing Championship titles in 2018, 2016, and 2015. In 2018, Breault and her St. Francis Yacht Club (StFYC) crew of Molly Carapiet (San Francisco, Calif.), Hannah Burroughs (San Francisco, Calif.) and Karen Loutzenheiser (Santa Cruz, Calif.) ran the table without a single loss. Breault will be sailing this week with Carapiet, Loutzenheiser, and Julie Mitchell (San Diego, Calif.). Carapiet and Loutzenheiser sailed with Breault in all three championship runs.

The event will be sailed in the J/22 and the intended race area will be along the San Diego city front in San Diego Bay near the Grape Street pier. The event format will consist of Round Robin(s), Knock-out Series, and a Finals Series. The racing format is subject to change.

Highlights of what happened globally in the sport of Sailing in the last 7 days. First some news, the SAIL GP in Christchurch New Zealand, has been cancelled due to the pandemic, and in Australia the pandemic is raging. The Sydney Sail GP event is in December, close to the Rolex Sydney Hobart Race. They both are looking shaky if the numbers of affected do not drop dramatically.

In this week's show we had a look at the huge, 140 foot Club Swan 125, from Juan K who naturally blitzed the recent ROLEX Fastnet Race Fleet.

Tour of the Handsome Hanse 548

Boat Review - Hanse 548 with Roger Mills. New to the market in early 2018 we put this yacht through its paces in a range of conditions on the Waitemata Harbour. Set up for great cruising comfort with large cabins and a great internal layout and finish. This yacht really performs, and with electric furlers and winches is set up for easy short handed sailing. The T Top canopy sets this apart as a great long distance cruiser.

To meet the ever increasing demand for energy independence, the HH44 has been conceived from the ground up to work with a parallel hybrid system. The HH44’s parallel hybrid provides all the benefits of an electric boat: silent fume-free motoring, instant torque for maneuverability, and hydro-regeneration while sailing, with the ability to switch to a trusty diesel engine when needed. The helms have been positioned in the aft corners which opens up the cabin top for up to 3.2kW of solar panels (+.5kW mounted on the davits) to compliment the hybrid. Propelled by electric motors the boat will do 7.5kts for 2.5 hours; an 18nm range while powered by batteries and sun alone. The hydro-regeneration combined with huge solar array and excellent sailing performance in all wind strengths give the HH44 infinite range.

HH44

Safety being paramount, the HH44's redesigned enclosed aft cockpit provides a secure platform to live and operate the boat. Closed transoms and uncluttered side decks make the boat more child and pet friendly. A clean aft beam, with davit winches hidden below and the mainsheet traveller on the cabin top, creates a safer aft cockpit with uninterrupted views aft.

The port hull hosts the owner's suite, with queen berth, full size wardrobe, and ensuite head and shower. Two guest cabins are to starboard, a queen berth aft, and double berth forward. Exceptional craftsmanship is evident throughout with foam core joinery and real wood veneers, top of the line equipment and appliances. On deck the best quality soft EVA foam decking provides non-skid comfort underfoot and easy maintenance.

Pricing starts at $1.2M and the first hull is scheduled to launch in late 2022. Additional details and the full specification can be found online at www.hhcatamarans.com/hh44 password: hh44press

The new Hallberg-Rassy 400, an aft cockpit boat with twin helms, a modern and efficient hull shape with twin rudders and an easy to handle rig, has taken to the water for the first time, prior to its premiere at the Open Yard / Öppet Varv, Scandinavia’s largest sailboat show, at Ellös, on the island of Orust, West Sweden, from 27-30 August 2021.

The interior offers the option of one or two aft cabins, one or two heads, classic mahogany or bright European oak interior. After the center cockpit 40C, the aft cockpit 400 is the second new 40 footer from Hallberg-Rassy in a short time.

Balance Catamarans has launched the first Balance 482 in Cape Town, South Africa - the latest performance cruising catamaran in the Balance Catamarans range.

Named Golden Hour by her owners, she was launched at Cape Town’s prestigious Royal Cape Yacht Club. Present at the launch were Phil Berman, President of Balance Catamarans, Mark Delany, Managing Director of Balance Catamarans Cape Town, Anton du Toit and his team of designers from Du Toit Yacht Design and the yacht’s new owners.

Balance Catamarans

Built in the Balance Catamarans Cape Town factory in South Africa, the Balance 482 is expertly crafted in sandwich construction, using E-glass with a PVC foam core and carbon fiber for local support and reinforcement structures. The Balance Cape Town factory is headed up by veteran boat builder Mark Delany, who has been building catamarans for 30 years. Here, the Balance 482s are in production as well as the Balance 442s. In addition, the factory manufactures custom Balance Catamarans over 65 feet, namely the Balance 680, Balance 750 Flybridge and Balance 760 XP and the Balance 820.

Like the rest of the Balance Catamarans range, the Balance 482 is built to cope with the rigors of serious Southern Ocean sailing. She is co-designed by world champion catamaran racer Phillip Berman and award-winning yacht designer, Anton du Toit. When Berman and du Toit first worked together on the Balance 526, they set out to produce a catamaran that was very fast, yet practical, robust, easy to sail and provide voyagers real comfort. They have achieved this goal and more with the Balance 482, designed to be easily piloted by a couple or single-handed.

Italia Yachts 14.98 is the latest born from the Italian Shipyard: enclosed in this name are the planning, design, quality, research, style and engineering studies that represent the Italian excellence. The new 50 footer joins a limited but well-balanced range of six models available in the Bellissima versions, which wink at cruising sailors, and the Fuoriserie, a real thoroughbred racer that dominates in all the most important national and international regattas.

Italia Yachts 14.98

As for the whole range, IY 14.98 was born with a sporty look for the hull whose sleek lines are designed by Studio Cossutti, the deck plan is clean and well thought out. In the ample cockpit the winches and rigging are positioned to facilitate maximum handling even with a small crew or family. The concept for the interiors is related to the “family feeling” expressed through the lines by the interior designer Mirko Arbore, where the wooden slats give a welcoming atmosphere as well as pleasant perception of external light. The Light is amplified by the mirrored walls, while the LED lighting is adjustable in three different positions to follow the life on board within 24 hours, without ever being intrusive.
