Making sense of the chaos at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Sailing Competition
There was more wind than expected for the second day of racing at the Olympic Sailing Competition which was just as well as the lumpy, confused wave pattern made it hard to get into the groove.

When the Pacific swell hits the shoreline of Enoshima and the concrete harbour walls, it reverberates back out to sea, turning the field of play into something akin to a washing machine. Finding a rhythm through the water is difficult, made all the harder by the breeze shifting first one way, then the other, without much discernible pattern. Many suffered, but a few managed to make sense of nature's chaos.

The Laser, Laser Radial and the Men's and Women's RS:X all took to the water in a 10-15 knot easterly breeze and successfully completed their scheduled races.

The Men's and Women's RS:X Windsurfers will enjoy a day off on Tuesday 27 July and the Laser and Laser Radial fleets will continue their competition.

Taking to the water for the first time will be the Men's Skiff - 49er, Women's Skiff - 49erFX and the Men's Heavyweight One Person Dinghy - Finn.

Racing starts at 12:00 JST. -- andy Rice - World Sailing

Father-son sailing and Division 1 and 2 winners crowned at Transpac
Honolulu, Hawaii - By now the stories of massive waves, sustained high speeds, and record runs coming into the docks at this year's Transpac are starting to sound routine. This year's race was epic, everyone agrees, thanks to a perfect weather scenario allowing for sustained high-speed sailing. Teams came in a day ahead of their hotel bookings and thus hung out at the bars of the Waikiki and Hawaii Yacht Clubs, enjoy terra firma and strong doses of Hawaiian hospitality poured into pineapples.

Yet another common them emerged as well: the strong interest in preserving the interest and opportunity to share the thrills of this race into future generations. Just as many did when they were kids, they are now having kids of their own and want to share this experience and pass on the lessons learned in offshore racing: how preparation, perseverance, camaraderie and teamwork can lead to success.

Several entries this years, even class winners whose crew lists were peppered with pro sailors, had father-son pairs on board, some even with multiple sons. Most sons stood a watch with their dads but were fully integrated into the team, fighting through the same challenges of doing their jobs in an ever-changing dynamic struggle with physical exertion, mental focus, and ever-present spray.

In the first of three daily awards sessions, the top-three places in Divisions 1 and 2 were awarded, going to Bad Pak for Division 1 and Doug Baker's Kernan 68 Peligroso for Division 2. The first-to-finish monohull Barn Door Trophy was also presented to Roy Disney and his team on their turbo Volvo 70 Pyewacket.

North Sails Performance
Technical clothing expert and North Sails Performance Director, Nigel Musto, recommends key pieces for your Rolex Fastnet Race kit bag.

Fastnet conditions are unpredictable. I have taken 5 days and drifted and I've done it in 2.5 days and 45 knots. I've worn everything from shorts and T-shirt to full foulies. If you're up the pointy end and it's blowing hard in those short seas it gets wet.

My ideal kit bag would include a North Sails Performance Offshore Smock and Trousers. Duraseals will keep you dry and comfortable if it blows. I would also have a Hybrid Jacket to wear in the more moderate stuff, at 480 grams it's a luxury you can afford to take.

I would pack a microfleece mid layer and take the high loft fleece just in case. It could make the difference between being warm and alert rather than cold and miserable. Pack a Merino base layer for breathable warmth, and a pair of Trimmers shorts and a Fast dry shirt for when it warms up.

Don't forget the suntan cream, the sunglasses. Good pair of gloves. Merino socks. I always take a tube of Neutrogena for your hands. And baby wipes - this isn't a luxury, staying clean prevents body sores.

Keep it all in a protective dry bag.

Take some cash, a credit card, passport and a fully charged but switched off mobile phone sealed in a watertight pouch. You don't always finish the race where you thought you would.

Jeff Progelhof Triumphs at J/22 World Championship
Corpus Christi, TX, USa-July 23, 2021-Jeff Progelhof's Schitzen Giggles went wire to wire to secure the title of 2021 J/22 World Championship, racing J/22 hull #24. With crew Paul Foerster (former J/22 World Champion) and Rod Favela, the Rush Creek Yacht Club-based team tallied just 21 points in nine races, including one discard (1-1-1-6-2-4-[9]-2-4).

Travis Odenbach's Honeybadger put together a solid four days on Corpus Christi Bay to earn second place with 24 points. Mike Marshall's Pressure Drop won both of Friday's races in winds of 15-18 knots for third place overall at 26 points. Forty-two teams representing 14 states competed from July 20-23 in Corpus Christi, TX.

Progelhof credited great teamwork and a fast boat, noting that Foerster was actually a recent crew replacement due to an injury among an original team member. "We were really moving fast upwind and keeping the boat as flat as possible through the waves," he summarized. "We come down to Corpus a lot. It's a fabulous place to sail, great wind and good waves."

Top Five:
1. Schitzen Giggles, Jeff Progelhof, Rush Creek Yacht Club, 21
2. Honeybadger, Travis Odenbach, Rochester Yacht Club, 24
3. Pressure Drop, Mike Marshall, New York Yacht Club, 26

Bermuda Gold Cup To Return In 2022
Organizers for the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club's Bermuda Gold Cup match racing tournament regret to announce that the 2021 regatta will not be held. The regatta, an event of the World Match Racing Tour, had been planned for the end of September, but will be rescheduled to next year at a date to be announced.

Last year the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club hosted the Gold Cup and the Open Match Racing World Championship amid the global pandemic, but its continuing effects have made sponsorship difficult to secure. "Planning and hosting an international event with competitors from many countries is a challenge in any given year, and even more so this year. although we had many sponsors committed, we have been unable to secure a title sponsor. Rather than consider putting on a sub-par event, we will refocus our efforts for 2022 and beyond," said Gold Cup chair Leatrice Oatley.

The King Edward VII Trophy, awarded to the winner of the Bermuda Gold Cup, is the oldest trophy in the world for competition involving one-design yachts. First presented in 1907 by King Edward VII at the Tri-Centenary Regatta at Jamestown, Va., honoring the 300th anniversary of the first permanent colony in america, the trophy is the only King's Cup ever to be offered for competition in the United States which could be won outright.

Visit the Bermuda Gold Cup and World Match Racing Tour websites for more information.

Rodos Cup 2021 - Day 5
On the last racing day, the weather was tailwind and not very strong but with many changes in the first seven miles of the course, giving the crews the opportunity to compete in a very technical race. The result of the crews' efforts in this leg was crucial to their success in the race as a whole. after that, the boats were on the open sea in the "Rhodes Strait" where there is almost always enough westerly wind that led the boats very fast to Rhodes.

In the final overall ranking:
In the IMS category the first place went to Favorit Plus
Second to Maria - Electra
Third to Blue Shark

In the IRC category, the first place went to the boat FOX
Second to St. anna
Third to Essex Girl

In the Cruising category the first place went to the boat NEFELI
Second to Enchantment Of Sakhalin
Third to Take Wind

Rodos Cup officially closed with a simple, due to health protocols, award ceremony at 20:30 on Friday in the modern and very hospitable facilities of Rhodes Marina. With the promise of all to meet again next year at Rodos Cup 2022, to live similar unforgettable experiences, but also the wish that next year the pandemic will be a painful past for all.

Tom Dolan on Smurfit Kappa-Kingspan Finishes Fifth in Solo Concarneau
Ireland's Tom Dolan proved his preparation for next month's La Solitaire du Figaro is on course when he finished a very tough, testing Solo Concarneau Trophee Guy Cotten race in fifth place from 33 starters.

Exhausted after sleeping for just one snatched hour between Thursday afternoon's start and crossing the finish line back in Concarneau at 15:44hrs local French time this Saturday afternoon, Dolan was quietly content that his only solo race so far this season - and the last before La Solitaire - went well and most of all that his carefully planned strategy paid off.

Smurfit Kappa-Kingpsan was sixth at the Birvideaux mark early in the course and eighth at the most southerly turn. "These are kind of arbitrary positions because one minute you can be third and the next 11th the fleet is so close and the angles changing all the time on a race like that. and so I really did not watch where the others were, I sailed my own race according to what I could see on the water and in the clouds. Really I tried not to focus on the others at all and that works for me." Tom Dolan concluded, "But for sure I made the right sail choices at the right time and seem to be fast enough."

Fifth place in this fleet matches Dolan's career best fifth on last year's La Solitaire du Figaro.

Gabart: "Saving 5 To 10 Days On A Round-The-World Passage Is Definitely Possible"
SVR Lazartigue, François Gabart's new Ultim, was launched yesterday in Concarneau in blazing sunshine in front of a large crowd. Born as M101 the new giant was known for a long time only by this code name after the withdrawal of its initial sponsor. The VPLP design is the result of 150,000 hours of work and is characterised by its strong design choices. It is, in essence, a radical but very carefully conceived concept, just like its skipper who was very involved in every stage of the design. Here is our take on this newest generation Ultim.

It was actually back in June 2017, just before The Bridge race started that François Gabart who was then skippering the two year old Macif (which was M100 and is now actual Ultim 3) started the first drafts of M101. Logically he went to VPLP who had designed M100, but also to Guillaume Verdier, designer of the freshly launched Maxi Edmond de Rothschild who then did the Imoca apivia, which is project managed by Garbart's MerConcept.

"In this kind of project, you don't decide things on a sketch. Rather we choose the overall approach, the investment that everyone is able to bring to the table," says the skipper, Gabart, who decided to continue his collaboration with VPLP: "They have brought in a bunch of other players, such as Gsea design for the structure, North Sails for the aero as well as artemis Technologies [which spun off out of the Swedish america's Cup programme artemis Racing, Editor's note]. "all of this environment was vital," specifies antoine Gautier, director of studies at MerConcept, who is in charge of the design team.

Brutal
Fast moving america's Cup story today. Following the announcement from the New York Yacht Club that they were partnering with the Stars & Stripes gang, it was naturally assumed that it was a case of merging with the american Magic Team but oh no. Not by a long shot.

This is the New York Yacht Club aligning with and adopting the Stars & Stripes syndicate and ditching Terry Hutchinson, Hap Fauth and Roger Penske completely. It's sensational news and Terry Hutchinson is hitting the airwaves to explain that the assets of american Magic, still locked away in a shed in New Zealand, are very much their Intellectual Property and that the hunt is on for an american Yacht Club that shares their vision for the next aC.

In an email widely circulated to a close circle of american yachting journalists and seen by myself, Terry makes himself available but states very clearly that: "since early June, american Magic has been navigating its way through an aC37 partnership agreement discussion with the New York Yacht Club. It has proven to be more difficult than expected. Instead of finalising an agreement with american Magic, NYYC's Commodore and Board of Trustees has decided to announce a "joining" of Stars & Stripes and the NYYC. This is an agreement separate from the american Magic team and mandates the 'participation of S+S with the club's future efforts'."
