Transpac Nalu V Boat Blog
Well it's the beginning of our 8th day and the excitement continues. Remember the issue with the afterguy? The other corner of the spinnaker is where the sheet attaches - that's what came loose last night. Nothing broke, but we ended up taking the spinnaker down and going wing-on-wing for the remainder of the night - not much slower, really.

This morning, we took down the Genoa (large sail in the front) to repair a growing tear. The sail came down fine, but not all of it. It attaches to a "car" that is part of the roller-furling set-up that lets us roll-up the sail. The car didn't come down because the shackle was broken. After a vigorous round of "I want to go up the mast, no I want go", Chris volunteered (in truth no one wanted to do it and Chris was our hero for volunteering). It was safe, but not comfortable for him - luckily he looks good in black & blue. After his "pinata experience" he took a bit of a rest on-deck.

One week into the race, Technical Editor Dobbs Davis of Seahorse Magazine gives his view of the weather conditions on the race course, positioning strategies and tactics of the teams, and some projections of what's to come for the fleet using the YB tracker software.

J/22 World Championship Kicks Off in Corpus Christi
Corpus Christi, TX, USA: Forty-two teams representing 14 states took to the waters of Corpus Christi Bay for the inaugural day of the J/22 World Championship in Texas. Unsettled conditions only permitted one race, dominated by Jeff Progelhof's Schitzen Giggles (Rush Creek Yacht Club) with crew Paul Foerster and Rod Favela. In winds between 6-8 knots, Travis Odenbach's Honeybadger placed second and Tom Meeh's Meehem in third.

Corpus Christi Yacht Club facilitated three days of seamless registration and inspection, including a practice race on Monday. Enthusiasm is running high for teams returning to World/Continental Championship racing for the first time since 2019.

Slow edition for Chicago Mackinac Race
Mackinac Island, Michigan, USA: "We didn't get to race last year (because of the pandemic), but this year we got to sail twice as long," joked one of the 3000 or more sailors that just completed the Chicago Yacht Club's 112th Race to Mackinac.

The iconic race that covers 289.4 nautical miles from the Chicago Lighthouse off Navy Pier to Round Island Lighthouse off Mackinac Island was indeed longer in the sense that the bulk of the fleet finished last night and early this morning, but that wasn't solely because of light air.

It was more a matter of the race presenting as primarily upwind and the breeze going from decent at the start to completely dead at some points near the Manitou Islands, offering windless holes that stranded some of the fleet's 231 boats longer than others.

First to finish just before midnight (Chicago time) on Sunday (July 18) was the Andrews 65 Eagle One with Timothy LaRiviere (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) at the helm. First overall in Cruising and first in Cruising 1, Eagle One outpaced the largest boat in the fleet, Peter Thornton's 104' Bruce King-designed ketch Whitehawk, which finished next, around 9:15 the following morning.

Taking home the Chicago-Mackinac Trophy was the Ericson 35 MK II Providence (also winner of Section 9), co-skippered by Jerry and Greg Miarecki (Chicago).

Winning the Mackinac Cup was the J/111 nosurprise (also winner in J/111s), skippered by Scott Sellers (Larkspur, Calif.)

The same but (very) different - Bavaria Yachts
Bavaria Yachts The new Bavaria C38 follows hard on the heels of the multiple award-winning and super-successful C42... but the design of Bavaria's new slightly smaller model was far from being an exercise in scaling

The Bavaria C42 was a storming success and a turning point for the brand. Launched early last year (and reviewed in our April 2020 edition), it convincingly won the European Yacht Of The Year Award and then beat some strong contenders from the big French builders to win a major award on their home turf, Voile Magazine's Boat Of The Year. The judges of both awards were surprised to discover that this competitively priced, production-built family cruiser could be so fast, responsive and rewarding to sail, while also offering a huge amount of internal volume. Voile Magazine's verdict speaks volumes about that boat, comparing the feel of the helm and general sailing sensations with those of a far more expensive Italian or Scandinavian performance cruiser. With all that to live up to the bar was set very high indeed for the next model in the range, the Bavaria C38, launched last month at Venice Boat Show.

Rodos Cup 2021 - Day 2
Another exciting sailing day for the sailors participating in this year's RODOS CUP 2021 was the route from Tilos to Nisyros. The boats started with a low-strength Northwestern wind from Tilos until about halfway.

The boats which chose a route close to Tilos made the right decision, as after some drop in wind intensity, the Westerly wind that came found them in a more favorable position than those who chose the pelagic route. With such wind speeds, all the boats finished before 16:30.

In the IMS category, MARIA ELECTRA came first, while APOLLON finished second and Favorit Plus third.

In the IRC category, ST. ANNA came first, FOX was second and COURRIER du COEUR third.

In the Cruising category, NEFELI came first, followed by ENCHANTMENT OF SAKHALIN and TAKE WIND third.

Tomorrow is planned to be a non-racing day and the crews will enjoy the beauties of hospitable Nisyros.

Hungarian crew of Attilo Bakonyui wins the EUROSAF L30 Europeans on home waters
On July 20, the 2021 EUROSAF L30 European Championship concluded with three perfect races sailed in fresh winds. No matter how hard the competitors pushed, the overnight leader HUN307 Tranquilo won the L30 European title 2021.

The final day of racing at the 2021 EUROSAF L30 European Championship was definitely the most exciting for many reasons. Firstly, the weather was fantastic with blazing sunshine and fresh northerlies of 15 to 20 knots making Balaton Lake a perfect playground for the 14-strong fleet. In such conditions, the crews received a chance to explore the full potential of the L30 Class. The boats reported downwind speeds of up to 20 knots.

Secondly, at least four teams had realistic chances to win the event and another five were seeking to jump into top-5. As a result, the suspense was felt in the air long before the racing started. While preparing for the day, the crews at the Spartacus YC piers were tense because the stakes were so high.

As it usually happens in those situations, the final race turned into several personal duels and everybody was chasing the prospect winners. No wonder that HUN307 Tranquilo managed only a ninth place in the last race, while GER31, UKR13 and HUN308 finished in top-3. Luckily, for the HUN307, even that didn't threaten their overall victory.

Meanwhile a severe battle for the silver and bronze medals was unfolding. Before the last race GER31 and HUN308 were on tiebreak for second place overall. The crews were chasing one another and Klaus Wagner managed to overcome his competitors to round off the event with the bullet. However, that appeared not enough to take the silver medal from Peter Tenke's HUN308.

EUROSAF L30 Europeans

Alexis Loison: "I Am The Figaro's Biggest Fan"
Approaching 37 years old, Alexis Loison will this summer compete in his 16th consecutive La Solitaire du Figaro. That will make him the most experienced sailor on the start line. His Solitaire programme this year is prepared differently twith a project to pass his knowledge and Figaro Beneteau 3 Région Normandie to French former 470 European and Youth World Champion and Tour Voile winner Guillaume Pirouelle. Before setting off for next week's Solo Guy Cotten next week, the sailor from Cherbourg – who has class wins in all the major crewed offshore races The Fastnet, Middle Sea Race and the Sydney Hobart - talks about his season, his ambitions and his future.

Are you going to participate in the Fastnet again?
Yes, with Guillaume in a JPK 1030. Jean-Pierre (Kelbert, owner of the JPK yard) lends me Léon, the boat with which we won in doubles and in IRC3 last time. In the category we are aiming for, the doubles, I know that there are quite a few good English crews who are well prepared for this race such as Dee Caffari (with James Harayda), Henry Bomby (with Shirley Robertson). I have won it four out of five times double handed, I was told it is a record, if I could do it again I wouldn't mind. It's not long before Solitaire, but it's going to keep me from thinking about the race and my mental coach told me to take this as a warm up, so I'm going to go warm up on the Fastnet.

The Fastnet Race of course finishes in your home port of Cherbourg, what is the difference compared to a finish in Plymouth?
I've heard a lot of people moaning that the Fastnet is becoming a 'level crossing race' (ie that it has many tidal gates which compress and open the fleet), but I have always considered it to be the quintessential level crossing race, I don't know how many there are. And so in this race, the Raz Blanchard will be just one more. On the other hand, it still adds another hundred miles and perhaps some more clear-cut options between the Fastnet and Cherbourg. Before, we passed the Scilly Isles and we put the left turn signal on and went from there. Now there will be more choice between going along the southern English coasts, the north Brittany coasts or passing in the middle, that will open the game quite a bit.

Bruce Kirby
Bruce Kirby Bruce Kirby, best known as the designer of the Laser, now known as the ILCA, has passed away at the age of 92yrs.

He enjoyed a lifetime in the sport as a sailor at Olympic level, America's Cup and Admirals Cup levels, as well as being heavily involved in the International 14ft class at Team racing and Prince of Wales Cup (fleet racing) level. He represented Canada at three Olympic regattas.

Kirby began his working life as a newspaper journalist which he combined with an interest in yacht design.

He switched to being a sailing journalist, becoming Editor of One-Design and Offshore Yachtsman, now Sailing World. However it was the Laser designed as a doodle while talking on the phone, that enabled him to make the financial switch to become a full time, albeit self-taught, designer.

The Laser was the first of the single manufacturer one designs that are now prolific in the sport. It was launched in partnership with his compatriot Ian Bruce, who looked after the production side of what became one of the most popular one-design classes, of which over 220,000 have been built.

The Laser was renamed the ILCA after a copyright dispute with the European based manufacturer of the class. It features a one-design hull, foils, but multiple rigs. As well as the Olympic singlehander, the ILCA is also used at Youth World Championships level for both male and female sailors, albeit it with standard or reduced sized rigs.

Now 50 years old, the class was launched at the New York Boat Show in January 1971 and sold 144 boats off the stand at that show. The Laser proved to be one of only three iconic designs in sailing history, which had a dramatic impact of the sport, the other two being the Windsurfer and Hobie Cat.

In an interview with Soundings Online, published in June 2019, he admitted to a long standing love-affair with the America's Cup, claiming he was "probably the only person left who remembers listening to the America's Cup on the radio before the war. My father and brother listened to it in 1934. By 1937, when Ranger beat Endeavor, I remember distinctly listening to it."

Sailing was a constant presence in his life, and he was good at it, Kirby jumped from the International 14 into the Finn class to sail for Canada in the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, where he became friendly with Paul Elvstrom, the Dane who won three consecutive Olympic golds in that class. Kirby skipped the 1960 Rome Olympics when he and his wife, Margo had their two daughters, but he returned to the Finn class at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, in Enoshima - venue for Tokyo2020.
