52 Super Series Kicks Off August in Puerto Portals, Mallorca, Spain
The biggest ever fleet of TP52s will meet on the Bay of Palma in August (24th to 28th) in Mallorca, Spain, to celebrate 20 years of the enduring international box-rule class at the Puerto Portals 52 Super Series Sailing Week & TP52 20th Anniversary Invitational.

The five-day event will welcome back nine circuit-regular teams after an extended hiatus to open the truncated, short, intense 2021 season. They will be joined by an additional eight TP52 20th Anniversary Invitational entries, which between them span almost the entire history of design generations that have been active in the Mediterranean.

From the original Aifos, which was one of the "founder members" of the TP52 Mediterranean fleet, through to Karl Kwok's successful Beau Geste designed as the Brazilian-flagged Onda for the 2018 circuit, the fleet, which will race under IRC handicap, will be a fascinating reminder of the evolution and the popularity of the class in Europe.

TP52 20th Anniversary Invitational Fleet (Team, Owner, Nation, Designer):

Aifos 500 - Ricardo Alvarez-Maldonado Parames (ESP, Farr 2005)
Air Is Blue - Roberto Monti (ITA, Judel Vrolijk, built in 2008 as Audi Q8)
Arobas - Gérard Logel (FRA, Botin, built in 2009 as CAM from ETNZ mould)
Beau Geste - Karl Kwok (CHN, Botin Partners, built in 2018 as Onda)
Blue Carbon - Toni Guiu (ESP, Botin Carkeek, built in 2005 as Balearia)
Macchia Mediterranea - Giampero Russo (ITA, Reichel Pugh, built in 2008 as Artemis)
Xio - Marco Serafini (ITA, Botin Partners, built in 2011 as Quantum Racing)
Zero Emission - Samuli Leisti (FIN, Reichel Pugh, built in 2008 as USA-17 / Oracle)

The invitational fleet will feature many top international crews as well as semi-professionals and amateurs who are keen to not just benchmark themselves against the top 52 Super Series teams but to also enjoy the unique atmosphere of Puerto Portals, a venue which has hosted and supported the Mediterranean TP52 fleet since the inaugural year of the MedCup in 2005.

52 Super Series Fleet (Team, Owner, Nation):

Alegre - Andy Soriano (GBR)
Bronenosec - Vladimir Liubomirov (RUS)
Gladiator - Tony Langley (GBR)
Interlodge - Austin & Gwen Fragomen (USA)
Phoenix - Hasso Plattner (RSA)
Platoon - Harm Muller-Spreer (GER)
Provezza - Ergin Imre (TUR)
Quantum Racing - Doug DeVos (USA)
Sled - Takashi Okura (USA)

Racing will run from Tuesday 24th to Saturday 28th August. The Invitational and 52 SUPER SERIES fleets will race on the same courses with different start times, but there will be racing for the combined fleet on Monday for the Official Practice Race and on Friday for separate trophies.

AEGEAN 600: Breeze-on sprint to the finish in Day 4
The teams coming into the finish at Cape Sounio today in Day 4 of the AEGEAN 600 spoke of strong breeze-on conditions last night and today on their final approach to the Attican coast. The famous Aegean Meltemi delivered northwesterly winds at 20 to 40 knots in the final several hours of the race, which at beam reaching angles made for exhilarating high-speed sailing last night and through the daylight hours as well. This breeze is expected to persist through tonight and tomorrow as well.

At 20:00 local time, 8 teams had crossed the finish line, with the next finisher 22 miles out making their last island rounding at the north end of Kea. In the total fleet of 39 teams, 23 remain on the course racing for the finish, while several had dropped out at various stages on the course. In fact, the skipper of one of these teams - Christopher Slaney on the Pogo 36 Infinity from Germany – said when they realized they had incorrectly rounded Paximadi in the confusion of light air there a couple days ago, they opted to retire from the race but go cruising among the nearby islands!

This was never an option for the laser-focused Scandinavian team on Peter Gustafson's J/111 Blur, who did well to complete the course in just under exactly four days, spending most of the race among competitors 2-3 meters longer, taller and more stable than their 36-feet in length. With much of the race being moderate to fresh reaching, Blur's second overall finish in ORC scoring speaks well for their effort, as does their welldeserved win in ORC Division 2. In IRC scoring they were 4th overall and 2nd in IRC 2.

North Sails TightWeave
The singular goal of North Sails Performance is to produce the best foul weather gear in the world. No compromise on design or materials.

In designing the new kit North Sails were determined to tackle the wetting out and water retention of traditional foul weather gear face fabrics.

20 years ago, the effectiveness of the Durable Water Repellent (DWR), the chemical applied to the outside of the laminated fabric to promote water beading and prevent absorption was very good. It would last for 3 to 4 weeks offshore and could be quickly rejuvenated.

Increasing environmental awareness has meant that these chemicals have been watered down by about 90% - it's the right choice as it's better for the environment, but it means that all foul weather gear today is less effective and wets out much faster than gear used to. It now lasts 3 to 4 days rather than weeks.

North Sails worked with Gore-Tex and found that if you change the construction of the face fabric from thick heavy yarns to very fine yarns, tightly woven together, they could create a fabric that has a natural water repellency and minimal absorption.

They created TightWeave.

The yarns are so tightly packed together it also helps maintain tear strength and abrasion resistance. The TightWeave fabrics reduce garment weight when dry, but vastly reduce wet garment weight when DWR is no longer active because they absorb so little water.

Tom Dolan Lying Eighth at Tour de Bretagne's Midpoint
After four of the eight races which constitute the Tour de Bretagne à la Voile, Ireland's Tom Dolan who is racing Smurfit Kappa-Kingspan with coach Tanguy Leglatin, lies in eighth place in the 32 boat fleet.

Buoyed by his first-ever podium position in the Figaro Beneteau 3 class, finishing third on Sunday's Saint-Malo to Saint Quay Portrieux passage race, Dolan and Leglatin today returned a solid ninth place on the longest leg of the contest's eight races, the 133 nautical miles stage from Saint Quay Portrieux round the westernmost tip of Brittany to Douarnenez.

After the fleet split not long after Tuesday's start it was an inshore group which included Smurfit Kappa-Kingspan that profited on the change of tide in the very light wind conditions. But things did not go so well for the Dolan Leglatin duo. By Roscoff they had slumped into the 20s but in the rock-hopping, tricky tidal sailing they were able to recover.

The fifth leg is a 46-mile stage from Douarnenez to Dolan's home port of Concarneau which starts and finishes Thursday.

""It would be nice to have a good result into our home port for sure, but I'm not getting carried away. We will do our best and see what happens. It should be raced downwind in 5 to 15 knots of wind. We'll take that."

Persico 69F Grand Prix 2.1
Porto Cervo, July 8, 2021. Today was the first day of racing at the Grand Prix 2.1 event of the Persico 69F Cup circuit. The event is organized by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda together with Team 69F and will conclude on July 10th. Currently in the lead is the Swiss team Okalys Youth Project followed by the Italian teams FlyingNikka 47 and FlyingNikka 74.

Roberto Lacorte's team FlyingNikka 47 got an excellent start and won the first race ahead of two Swiss teams: Okalys Youth Project and Sailing Performance. In the second of today's races Young Azzurra got the best start and was leading up to the second reach when, while trying to lengthen their lead, they pushed their boat to the broaching point. The home team then tried to recover but ended the race in sixth place. First place in the second race was captured by the team FlyingNikka 74 with Alessio Razeto, Andrea Fornaro and Lorenzo De Felice aboard. The two Swiss teams repeated their placements from the first race: in second place Okalys Youth Project followed by Sailing Performance in third place. Thanks to their consistent performance, Okalys Youth Project is currently in the lead of this event, followed by FlyingNikka 47 and FlyingNikka 74, who are currently tied for points having won a bullet and a fifth place today.

There will be more racing tomorrow July 9th. The forecast calls for Mistral at 18 to 20 knots.

Qualify Offshore Fleet Gathering for ISORA's 35-Mile Race Ten
There is a 'quality' fleet now assembled for Saturday's 35-mile Viking Marine sponsored ISORA race that starts and finishes at Dun Laoghaire Harbour.

With entries still open for race ten of the season, the Irish fleet is back to full strength after a busy June that saw many boats opt-out of last weekend's 64-miler.

As Afloat previously reported, there will be three Sunfast 3600s and two J122s racing as part of the fleet that currently stands at 15.

The Grand Soleil 34 Justtina has dropped out, but the arrival of a second First 34.7, Magic Touch, will be more competition for Leslie Parnell's Black Velvet sistership from the Royal Irish Yacht Club.

Early forecasts indicate light south-easterly winds for Saturday.

Governor's Cup International Youth Match Racing Championship
Newport Beach, CA: The Balboa Yacht Club today announced the final ten skippers that will compete in the 54th Governor's Cup International Youth Match Racing Championship, July 26-31 in Newport Beach, California. "While we regret that teams from Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom will be unable to join us, this has set up a great competition between the U.S. teams and Europe!" said regatta Chair Christine Robertson Gribben. "We are thrilled to be able to hold the event this year after last year's cancellation and especially excited to see the racing between U.S. and European teams," continued Ms. Gribben, "Although the GovCup is an individual event, we are discussing putting up a prize of some sort to present to either Europe or the U.S. based on the top three finishers from each!".

Thimoté Polet, a successful sailor in fleet and ocean racing in addition to his skills as a match racer, will represent France. Emil Kjaer from Denmark also joins the field having attained a podium finish in three separate Grade 2 match racing events in northern Europe and would have to be considered one of the favorites. Kjaer's fellow Scandinavian Marius Westerlind (SWE) will skipper in the GovCup for the first time as the 2020 Swedish Youth Match Racing Champion and will undoubtedly keep up the tradition of strong Swedish teams.

Seven U.S. teams will compete, a record since before the Cup became an international event over thirty years ago
