Gran Canaria delivers fantastic stage for Ocean Fifty trimarans on the Pro Sailing Tour
The third stage of the Pro Sailing Tour concluded today in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The seven strong fleet of Ocean Fifty trimarans revelled in excellent racing conditions over the competition with new records in front of the natural sailing stadium offered by the Las Canteras beach. Overall victory goes to Leyton skippered by Sam Goodchild with local Olympic champion Luis Doreste guest sailing on board.

The four days of competition ended today for the offshore Ocean Fifty fleet with ideal conditions on the final 20-mile coastal race in the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria stage of the Pro Sailing Tour. The coastal race from San Cristóbal and on around La Isleta towards the beach of Las Canteras was followed by two races in front of the Barra de la Barra of the popular Canary Island beach and a final course back to San Cristóbal, which nearly provided a dramatic reshuffle to the overall standings.

Arkema 4 was the best of the day. The boat skippered by Quentin Vlamynck won three of the four races sailed and seriously contended Leyton's lead, who would see their points cushion diminish on the weekend races. Sam Goodchild's boat had an irregular day (2nd/4th/1st/6th) but in the end it was enough to win his third consecutive title following Brest and La Rochelle. He was joined on the podium in Gran Canaria by Arkema 4 (two points behind the champion) and Erwan Le Roux's Ciela Village.

The Pro Sailing Tour 2021 will be decided in the final stage race linking the French towns of Toulon and Brest. An ocean course of 1,650 nautical miles between the Mediterranean and Atlantic coasts of France. Sam Goodchild's Leyton leads the provisional ranking after three events, three 24-Hour Challenges and 21 coastal races raced.

Provisional overall standings Pro Sailing Tour after two stages:
1 - Leyton (Sam Goodchild) - 7+7 = 14 pts
2 - Arkema 4 (Quentin Vlamynck) - 6+5 = 11 pts
3 - Ciela Village (Erwan Le Roux) - 5+4= 9 pts
4 - Primonial (Sebastien Rogues) - 2+6 = 8 pts
5 - Solidaires En Peloton - ARSEP (Thibaut Vauchel-Camus) - 3+3 = 6 pts
6 - Groupe GCA 1001 sourires (Gilles Lamire) - 4+2 = 6 pts

Team Aqua - Masters Of Marstrand For A Fifth Time
It is rare even between the ultra-close RC44s for an event to go to the wire in such an extreme way as it did at the conclusion of the 44Cup Marstrand. Going into the tenth and final race of the circuit's Swedish stopover, five of the eight strong fleet was still capable of winning the event. At this point Dutchman Nico Poons' Charisma was leading by a useful, but by no means unassailable, three points over Igor Lah's Team CEEREF in second.

Up the first beat of the final race Chris Bake's Team Aqua made great gains on the right, to lead comfortably around the top mark from where they extended.

Team Aqua had started this race in third place overall, five points behind Charisma and tied with Marstrand event hosts Torbjorn Tornqvist's Artemis Racing. Thus after crossing the finish line first there was intense scrutiny of the arrival order behind. If Charisma finished fifth then the 44Cup Marstrand would be hers, but if she was sixth she would tie with Team Aqua, causing Bake's team to win on countback. Despite a tremendous battle between the leaders, Charisma got stuck in traffic coming into the top mark leaving her in last position, and by the finish had only managed to regain two places. Victory was Team Aqua's.

On the race course, the rise in tension coincided some moments of aggression, notably at the congested top mark roundings.

The 44Cup now moves on to Cowes over 11-15th August.

Final results - Marstrand

2. Charisma, MON, 38

New From Dubarry: Proper Sailing Polo Shirts
Dubarry Polo shirts are great for active summer sailing. The higher collar keeps the sun off your neck and the relaxed fit gives full freedom of movement, without being so loose that they flap in a fresh breeze or risk getting caught in a winch. That said, many polo shirts aren't ideal. They can take too long to dry out and you want to be sure that the fabric provides complete, reliable sun protection for your skin. Dubarry has the solution: a new range of sailing-specific polos, with short and long sleeves, in men's, women's and unisex styles. Key design features include a holder loop for your sunglasses and when you need to wipe the salt spray off them, you'll find a handy eyewear cleaning cloth discreetly hidden in the hem.

Freshford and Sorrento are lightweight and sporty polos with a ribbed collar and subtle texture. They're made from soft but durable poly-cotton with UPF 40 sun protection. They're also quick-drying, highly breathable, actively wick moisture away from your skin, and have odour-preventing antimicrobial protection built in.

Menton and Riviera are new styles of technical polo designed for performance, comfort and protection with a perfectly tailored fit. Breathability is enhanced with a perforated fabric in all the right places. When you're out in bright sunshine they'll also shield you from UV exposure, with UPF 50 protection – the equivalent of an extra-strong sunblock.

Liberty Bitcoin Moth Cup
The final day of the Foiling Week and the Liberty Bitcoin Moth Cup arrived with an unpredictable wind forecast as rain was expected to come in mid-day. However, Luca Rizzotti and his team hosting the Foiling Week and the Liberty Bitcoin Moth Cup did a brilliant job and they managed to arrange three races in solid conditions gusting up to 18-20 knots wind before the rain came in at 3 P.M. at Lake Garda.

Tom Slingsby (36) got off to, for him a somewhat unexpected start of the day with a 6th in the first race. But he soon got back on track with two striking wins. With 8 wins out of 11 possible and 10 points in total, Tom not only took home the first prize in the Liberty Bitcoin Moth Cup, but he also remains the bookmaker's favourite for the upcoming Moth World Championship in September 2021.

Ruggero Tita (29) delivered another three races with consistent top results: 4, 2 and 2! 24 points overall and a strong 2nd place.

Nicolai Jacobsen (19) followed closely to Ruggero with a 3rd and 4th in the first two races, while he discarded a 7th for the series in his last race. With 35 points, the young sailor from Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club finished at the podium at a strong 3rd place.

Island Dream
The Island Sailing Club is a national treasure that deserves to be Grade III listed, wrapped in cotton wool and preserved forevermore. It's a club with fabulous, friendly, welcoming staff and volunteers who make organising one of the biggest yacht races in the world effortless and a joy to participate in. 'Incredible' is an overused word but incredible is what the Island Sailing Club are.

For this weekend it was the 90th anniversary of the UK's most prestigious race – the Round the Island Race – and as anniversaries go, this one was a classic. Forgive my radio silence for a few days but preparing my International H-Boat for the race required a few days of concentration – amazing how something that only measures 28ft can consume so much of one's life and time but it was, and is, worth every second, minute and hour to take part in sailing's equivalent of the London Marathon. The amazing Wight Shipyard over in East Cowes (the one with the country's largest Union Jack on its shed doors) moved heaven and earth for me and my thanks go to Peter Morton and his outstanding team shoreside. We splashed on Thursday and it all worked like clockwork...

Wingfoil Euro Cup Garda
The first ISWA WingFoil Euro Cup crowned it's champions today, with Francesco Cappuzzo (ITA) taking the win with a perfect score ahead of Riccardo Zorzi (ITA) and Pietro Leon Kiaulehn (ITA).

12 short-track course races were run over the course of the three day competition, with the final day being purely dedicated to the new Airstyle discipline, combining trick elements from windsurf and kiteboard freestyle.

The race track reminds of a square - with a reaching start to Mark 1, a downwind leg, a long reach over to the other side of the racing area, and a beat to windward towards the finishing line. The wind limit for racing is currently around 8 knots, but with improving skills and equipment this will soon be much lower.

Cappuzzo proved to be unbeatable on his RRD gear around the 500x500m course that held the fleet nicely together and made for some close racing in the stronger winds off Malcesine at Lake Garda. In the lighter winds, the experience of Cappuzzo and Zorzi held off the competition clearly, but it is early days for this young sailing discipline and the skills are improving with every race.

Harris Brothers, World 18ft Skiff Champions
John Harris, Peter Harris and Scott Babbage in action on Rag & Famish Hotel on Sydney Harbour. Click on image for photo gallery.

18ft Skiff Champions Two brothers winning JJ Giltinan world 18ft Skiff Championships is not too rare. There have been at least ten 'brothers' winning boats in the 71 championships held so far, but the Harris brothers have a rare distinction with their victories.

The two brothers won their respective championship titles in different boats, and not together. John Harris won his championship as skipper of Rag & Famish Hotel in 2001. Peter Harris won his championship in the bow of Gotta Love It 7 in 2013.

The story began in 1996 when John was introduced to the 18s by Craig Ferris, who was the Sailing Coach for the 2000 Olympics, after John had recently experienced a bad trip across Europe as part of his preparation for the games.

Craig had previously won the 1996 JJ Giltinan world Championship with Stephen Quigley and Chris Cleary in AEI-Pace Express and had been approached by the Australian 18 Footers League to run an 18ft Skiff campaign when Stephen Quigley retired before the 1996-1997 Season.

John Harris had already shown enough ability on the water, and character off the water, to convince the League that he was exactly the type of person to become a skipper the club's fleet.

Like a number of other 18 footer champions, John started sailing in Sabots at Vaucluse Amateur 12' Sailing Club, at age 7, then moved into Flying Elevens at 12.

Peter Harris came to the 18s in 2002-03, after competing in the Sabot and Flying 11s (mainly) out of the Vaucluse Amateur 12ft Sailing Club, when he teamed with Micah Lane and Chris Pomfret on the Rosement Wines-sponsored skiff.

He then competed over the next four seasons with skipper John Sweeny before moving onto Rag & Famish Hotel with his brother John, and Scott Babbage, for the following three seasons, from 2007-2008 to 2009-2010.

Following a season with Dave Gilmore on Black Swan, Peter joined Jack Macartney on Rag & Famish Hotel in 2011-2012 and sailed a total of five seasons with Jack until the 2016-2017 season.

The only season when Peter wasn't a part of that team was 2012-2013 when he sailed in the bow of Gotta Love It 7 with Seve Jarvin (skipper) and Scott Babbage, on the main sheet.

The team won the 2013 JJ Giltinan world Championship. -- Frank Quealey, Australian 18 Footers League Ltd.
