Mistral Arrives At The Swan Sardinia Challenge
Both the weather forecast and the racing schedule were right on time for the second day of racing at the Swan Sardinia Challenge, organized by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda together with Nautor's Swan and ClubSwan Racing. Currently in the lead of this event's various Classes we see ClubSwan 50 Sparti; G-Spot and Vitamina are tied in the ClubSwan 36 Class; Koyré-Spirit of Nerina is in the lead of the ClubSwan 42s and Ulika is leading the Swan 45 Class.

Punctually at 12:00 CEST the Race Committee, headed by Principal Race Officer Arianne Mainemare, began starting procedures for the first of the day's three scheduled windward/leeward races. Thanks to a Mistral breeze at 12 knots that gradually built to 20 over the course of the day, conditions were perfect.

In the ClubSwan 50 Class the Russian team aboard Dmitri Rybolovlev's Sparti, with the Spanish gold medalist Fernando Echavarri as tactician, currently has a two-point lead over the second placed team, Marcus Brennecke's Hatari, who placed 4-2-1 in today's races. Leonardo Ferragamo's Cuordileone, after having placed first in the day's first race managed to bounce back from an over early, recovering positions to finish third in the second race. Earlybird, yesterday's winner, had to withdraw after breaking her bowsprit in a small collision with another boat.

The ClubSwan 36 Class seems to be gelling around a couple of teams: Andrea Lacorte's Vitamina and G-Spot, owned by Giangiacomo Serena di Lapigio are tied for points in first place and both won a race each today.

In the Swan 45 Class two first places and a fourth have put Stefano Masi's Ulika, with tactician Edoardo Mancinelli Scotti, in the lead ahead of Lennard van Oeveren's Motions and Klaus Diederichs' Fever.

Racing is scheduled to begin Friday at 12:00 CEST in Mistral conditions similar to today's: between 14 and 20 knots.

Close racing the order of the day at landmark Superyacht Cup Palma
The frustrations of a challenging year were blown away Thursday as a solid sailing breeze kicked in to help celebrate the opening day of the 25th anniversary of Superyacht Cup Palma.

Near ideal conditions once again graced the Bay of Palma, delivering tight and exhilarating racing on a 23nm course to the nine-strong fleet of superyachts, their owners, captains and crews.

Umiko - at 24m the smallest superyacht in the fleet - was the first away on the Pantaenius Race Day course, followed by her Class A rivals Missy, Shamanna and Nilaya at two minute intervals.

In Class B the first two starters chose alternate routes to the first mark, with the majestic 46m Aquarius - the largest and heaviest yacht at SYC - opting to head west on her first leg, while Baiurdo VI headed for the left side of the racecourse having made a perfectly timed start. The SYC first-timer Ravenger was next up, hotly pursued by the 46m Ganesha, and Scorpione of London and her lime green shirted crew.

Missy was first around the first mark, the Pantaenius buoy, with Umiko and Shamanna jostling for position some 800m astern, and off towards the New Zealand buoy, the second of five marks. Eventually the 33m Missy would give ground on the water to her slightly larger rivals Shamanna and Nilaya, with the former narrowly taking line honours by less than 30 seconds on the opening day.

However, the sophisticated ORCsy handicap system flipped the leaderboard, giving Nilaya the opening race win by just 10 seconds - after more than two hours of racing - from Missy, Shamanna and Umiko.

Racing at Superyacht Cup Palma continues on Friday with New Zealand Race Day, named after SYC's long-standing Destination Partner.

North Sails Performance
North Sails have launched their foul weather gear with a clear intention to disrupt the performance gear market. Go back sixty years and even Lowell North - the pioneering aerospace engineer who founded North Sails in 1957 - could not have foreseen the incredible progress, the sophistication of North Sails that now dominates the world's racing and cruising fleets.

This same rigorously innovative approach has now been applied to foul weather gear. Starting from scratch, albeit with a considerable depth of industry knowledge, has allowed unconstrained thinking that has resulted in the best possible combination of new materials and garment design.

Nigel Musto worked with North's talented team tasked with the sole the aim of creating the world's best marine clothing bar none. The result is four ranges of technically advanced clothing that are lightweight, hardwearing and offer unrivalled performance.

The GORE-TEX® Pro Ocean line offers the most breathable, waterproof and durable smocks and salopettes. Those who compete in the classic 600-mile offshore races or cruise serious distances will be well served by the GORE-TEX® Pro Offshore range.

Choices widen further in the GORE-TEX® Pro Inshore line, which includes smocks, a jacket and an innovative hybrid product that combines the best attributes of both, including a full front zip and an effective neck seal.

The GP Aero line prioritises stretch and lightweight for inshore high-performance racing. For this range the design team incorporated lessons learned from cycling and other high intensity sports.

Changes in the air and leaderboards
More lights breezes and sunshine saw changes across most leaderboards at the O'Leary Insurance Group Sovereign's Cup at Kinsale leaving the outcome of the regatta in the balance at the halfway stage.

A second place and then a race win for Mike and Ritchie Evans' Snapshot bounced the Howth Yacht Club crew back into the lead of Division 1 under IRC. The J99 crew had an opening race win penalised on Wednesday and followed with an eighth place but their form is now being rewarded with a healthy points margin in the 14 strong class.

Conor Phelan's Jump Juice from the Royal Cork YC has taken over the lead in the largest fleet of the event thanks to a race win on the second day coming after a second place on Wednesday. The result displaces Bob Rendell's Samatom from Howth YC as class leader.

The Coastal course enjoyed a scenic tour de force beneath the cliffs of the Old Head Golf Links and close to the lighthouse to dodge the worst effects of the flooding tide. After rounding the Black Tom buoy in Courtmacsherry Bay, the course led back to the famous Sovereigns Rocks that gives the event its name.

Also enjoying a scenic coastal route, albeit of a shorter distance and close to Kinsale Harbour were the two White Sails fleets that have 19 boats between them.

Friday's forecast is for cooler and fresher conditions including more wind from the north and the prospect of further 'champagne sailing' conditions for the remainder of the event that concludes on Saturday.

Irresistible wins - Pure Grenada
Grenada Once the secret gem of Caribbean sailing Grenada is now a major must-do regatta venue (but the beautiful gem never lost its sparkle)

Over the past 12 months Grenada has transformed from a 'perhaps one day' to a 'must go' destination in the Caribbean. Previously considered a backwater by some sailors looking to tour the most glamorous destinations in the Caribbean, Grenada moved firmly on to the map in March 2020, and looks set to stay as a long-term yachties' favourite.

As Covid-19 was sweeping across the globe, hundreds of yachts found themselves at sea with nowhere to go. Hurricane season would be coming soon, but with coronavirus sweeping through the USA and Florida in particular, sailors found themselves caught between a rock and a hard place. They would have to look elsewhere for shelter and so many headed further south than usual, away from the hurricane zone and towards Grenada, 458 nautical miles off the coast of Venezuela.

"Big Ack" Is Back!

WHAT The word "Acrospire" describes the sprout of a grain seed, the beginning of a new plant. In the field, after the snow has melted and the moist soil is being warmed by the spring sun, the acrospire grows in a spiral from one end of the see. . hence its name of acro "spire"

However, in Victoria, Australia the word conjures up something different … a series of fast, beautiful and successful yachts all drawn by the legendary local designer Charlie Peel (except for the last one which was a 6 metre Fife) and owned by the brewer Joe White.

We spend a fair amount of column inches in this publication trying to persuade people to part with their hard-earned cash and pour it into a restoration to save this or that "worthy" boat. But here on Port Phillip, there is now an opportunity to own a a boat from the ACROSPIRE lineage without even getting your hands dirty. The immaculate ACROSPIRE IV is for sale and believe it or not the asking price is highly realistic!

Rating at 9.31 metres "Big Ack" as she was known was 54ft overall and carried 1200 sq ft of sail on her Gaff rig. First lowered into the Yarra River in November 1929, she was converted to her originally designed Marconi sail plan the following year.

She took line honours in the 1938 Bruny Island race from Hobart. Her record winning time of 14 hours and 13 seconds stood for almost 50 years, finally beaten by the maxi yacht SOVEREIGN.

What a great outcome it would be if she could regularly race on Port Phillip, her spiritual home, against her elder sister, providing pleasure not only for a new custodian and her crew, but for all those lucky enough to witness the sight.

Sailing hardware company Allen Brothers has used 3D model technology to solve the problem of inconsistencies in masts for the Dragon keelboat.

Mast tapers are needed to get the best shape and performance from a sail. The process for creating them is straightforward but it is difficult to achieve a consistent result. Sailors and boat builders were noticing that the bend characteristics differed between each mast, meaning that, if one needed to be replaced, the tuning and set up measurements would no longer be valid.

Allen set about determining what was causing these slight variations, using its 3D CAD and machining expertise to produce a scan of the desired taper which could then be used to reverse-engineer a 3D model for repeated use.

Using the 3D CAD data the design team was able to manufacture a set of forming tools that repeated the profile of the taper. "We had surmised that the forming operation was going to be the most difficult operation to achieve and quickly realised we would need to somehow form the taper from top to bottom to allow us to control the sizes of the taper," said Tom Clayton, product designer at Allen.

The company says it has now perfected the technique, having produced 20 masts so far. "I believe we have certainly nailed the brief. The taper is identical across all the sections and looks much neater than the previous version," added Darren.

The masts are class legal and the technology can be scaled up or down for other classes of masts.
