Storm Trysail Club Block Island Race Week presented by Margaritaville
The fog lifted overnight so the Race Committee sent the 158 teams for Block Island Race Week presented by Margaritaville out to their assigned race circles for North Sails Race Day to get some "points on the scoreboard" today.

Even though Tropical Depression Claudette is passing well to the south of Block Island, a few storm clouds began to form on the horizon soon after the races started and the swell from the storm forced the boats to battle 8-10 foot swells on the race courses throughout the day.

Finally commencing their regatta, after yesterday's abandonment due to fog, the White and Blue fleets managed to complete three races in light 5-10 knot breeze and the Green Circle (Performance Cruising and Multihull) completed a 12-mile distance race.

In the ORC Division, Hap Fauth's Maxi 72 BELLE MENTE, Austin and Gwen Fragomen's Botin 44 INTERLODGE, John Cooper's Mills 43 COOL BREEZE, and Ashley Maltempo's and Bill Wiggins' J/ 121 WINGS top each of their classes for the day.

As the system passes through this evening, Storm Trysail Club's Race Committee is hopeful for the return of sunny skies and sea breeze to continue to get off races.

Men's and women's kitefoiling set for Paris Olympics
The full sailing programme for the 2024 Paris Olympics has been confirmed with news kiteboarding will be split into men's and women's competitions to replace the mixed offshore event.

The IOC confirmed the move at a meeting of their executive board overnight (NZ time).

They previously identified issues with the mixed offshore event around field of play security, scope and complexity, broadcast cost and complexity and the fact World Sailing had not staged an offshore world championships.

The IOC asked World Sailing to put forward alternative event proposals for sailing's 10th medal at the Paris Olympics and the World Sailing council approved men's and women's kiteboarding (formula kite) and men's and women's two-person dinghy (470) as the first and second alternatives.

Kiteboarding had previously been set down for a mixed teams relay but medals will now be handed out for both a men's and women's competition.

"We now know what the short-term solution is for Paris," Yachting New Zealand high performance director Ian Stewart said.

"All along we wanted to maintain classes for a heavier male and lighter female. We were disappointed with the loss of the Finn [after the Tokyo Olympics] and thought the double-handed offshore event would have given opportunities for a wide cross-section of sailors."

Wayfarers Make Hay At The Medway Marathon
Richard Stone and Catherine Gore sailed their Wayfarer to victory at the Medway Marathon last Saturday, taking just under four and a half hours to complete the 26-mile handicap race. The longest distance event seen in the Selden SailJuice Winter Series, the Medway Marathon brought together dinghies and local keelboat fleets together in a battle up this historic waterway.

Local knowledge clearly helps, Stone having sailed on the river for more than 40 years. Stone and Gore are also Commodore and Rear Commodore of Medway Yacht Club, the host organiser for a competition that this year took place in a gentle Force 2 to 3.

Other winners of recent years include Chris Saunders in a Blaze and Andrew Peake in a Musto Skiff, but this year Peake and the other Musto Skiffs didn't get enough breeze to really light up their asymmetric advantage. With everyone travelling at displacement speed most of the time, the Wayfarers came into their own.

In second place was the Wayfarer of Brian and Elizabeth McKenzie who finished around 90 seconds behind the winners, while Luke Fisher's Vareo finished third overall, just 24 seconds behind the McKenzies on corrected time under the Great Lakes handicap numbers. Fisher has also completed all events in the Selden SailJuice Winter Series so far this season.

Thirteen year old Ben Rothwell won the Half Marathon in his Laser 4.7, while Millie Lewis, sailing a Laser Radial, was the best placed lady helm and U23 helm in the Marathon itself.

Event sponsor Craftinsure's Rob Cage sailed his Merlin Rocket to 15th place crewed by daughter Hatty, and first of the keelboats was Luke Hopper's Sonata crew in 18th place.

The Medway Marathon was a recent addition to the Selden SailJuice Winter Series which has been extended from last winter through to the final event which is the rescheduled Tiger Trophy, due to take place at Rutland Water on the final weekend of August.

Members of the UK marine industry have been recognised in this year's Queen's Birthday Honours List
Chief executive of British Marine, Lesley Robinson, and managing director of SeaSafe, Jeremy Dale, have both been awarded an OBE for services to the leisure industry and services to maritime safety respectively.

Lesley has been at the helm of British Marine for the past three years, creating a national agenda to deliver what members need and overseeing improvements to the Southampton International Boat Show such as creating its new Sustainability Pledge.

Jeremy Dale took over SeaSafe nearly 29 years ago, overseeing its production of safety products such as inflatable coats, MOB equipment and lifejackets. With 30 years' experience in marine pilotage, Jeremy is an Honorary Member of the Nautical Institute and a Member of the UK Maritime Pilots Association.

Also receiving honours were Suffolk Sails' Matthew Read and Simon Scammell who were both awarded a British Empire Medal (BEM) for services to frontline health workers throughout the Covid-19 pandemic.

As hospitals admissions surged, instead of making sails and covers for boats, Matthew and Simon decided to use the firm's 3D printing equipment to make PPE for health workers.

Entry Open for 2021 Auckland & NZ Match Racing Championships
Entry is officially open for two exciting match racing events coming up this year at the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron.

The first is the Auckland Match Racing Championship, presented by Harken New Zealand, held on the 21st and 22nd of August 2021. Formerly known as the NZMRC qualifier event, the top three finishers at this event will gain automatic entry into the Harken NZ Match Racing Championship held between the 30th September - 3rd October 2021.

Entry is also now open for the Harken New Zealand Match Racing Championship, which is an official national championship. Some of the skippers already lining up include Mastercard YTP Training Manager Reuben Corbett, Robbs Hielkema, Robbie McCutcheon, Megan Thomson, and Niall Malone.

Competition at this event is always fierce, which was shown at last year's edition when sixteen talented teams battled it out in blustery conditions, with Graeme Sutherland coming out on top after taking down Nick Egnot-Johnson in the final.

All racing for both events will be completed in the RNZYS fleet of Elliott 7 keelboats and will be raced on the tricky waters outside the Squadron.

Barcolana New routes, a new spirit of participation, and new events are in store for the 53rd Barcolana sailing race, scheduled for Sunday, October 10th, and preceded by a rich bill of events both onshore and online starting on October 1st. In keeping with a tradition that began seven years ago, the first official communication of the new edition is the presentation of illycaffè's poster for the event. After Michelangelo Pistoletto (2015), Gillo Dorfles (2016), Maurizio Galimberti (2017), Marina Abramović (2018), Olimpia Zagnoli (2019) and Lorenzo Mattotti (2020), illycaffè, entrusted with the artistic direction of the poster, chose the renowned designer, architect and artist, Ron Arad for the 53rd Barcolana.

Barcolana is scheduled for October 10th 2021 in the Gulf of Trieste, starting at 10.30. Online registration begins June 29 at www.barcolana.it

Today, 400 flyers and 4000 postcards with the poster's design will be sent from the headquarters of Societa Velica di Barcola e Grignano and addressed to yacht clubs and shipowners who participated in past editions, to promote the event directly among its protagonists.

Yannick Bestaven Sets Sail For The Vendee Globe 2024 With A New Boat

Yannick Bestaven If one of the chapters of the beautiful story between the Vendee poultry, Maître CoQ, and the Rochelais skipper, Yannick Bestaven, ended on January 28 with a victory in the 9th edition of the Vendee Globe, it is not as far as the time for the epilogue has come!

Indeed, the saga continues and, with it, the quest for an ambitious sporting dream: to give oneself the means to win the Everest of the Seas twice in a row, the round-the-world sailing solo and non-stop. Building on this objective, taken up but assumed, Maître CoQ renews its support for Yannick Bestaven and the sailing team.

A partnership contract was signed until June 2025, resulting in a new IMOCA. The construction of Maître CoQ V will thus begin in June 2021 between the walls of a historic building site, CDK technologies, in Port-La-Forêt, for a launch one year later. It will be a Verdier plan, designed in the molds of the 11th Hour 2 monohull.

Yannick will start this season in two double-handed races, the Rolex Fastnet Race, the start of which will be given on August 8 in the waters of the Solent (Great Britain) and on November 8 in the Jacques Vabre transatlantic which will leave from Le Havre to join the Martinique. Who says double, says co-skipper, and for this, without hesitation, Yannick called on a sailor who has supported him since the start of the Master CoQ project, Roland Jourdain.

Youth Sailing World Championships to come in Oman December 2021
Oman Sail and World Sailing are delighted to announce that the 50th edition of the Youth Sailing World Championships presented by Hempel will be held at Mussanah Sports City, Oman, from 11-18 December 2021.

Mussanah Sports City has played host to several Olympic class sailing events, including the Laser World Championships in 2013 and the RS:X World Championships in 2015. In April this year the venue hosted the 2021 Mussanah Open Championship, a Tokyo 2020 qualification event for African and Asian nations.

Located approximately 100km north of Muscat International Airport, Mussanah is a top-class, purpose-built sporting venue, capable of hosting large-scale events and facilitating hundreds of athletes. It is renowned for its high-quality sailing conditions all year round. During December, temperatures are expected to be around 24C on average, while the average wind strength is expected to be around 10-17 knots.

The last Youth Sailing World Championships were held in Gydnia, Poland in 2019, where 409 sailors from 66 nations competed across nine youth events, including the Boy's and Girl's divisions of the 29er, 420, RS:X and Laser Radial, as well as the Mixed Multihull, the Nacra 15. The 2020 Youth Worlds were scheduled to be held in Salvador, Brazil, in December 2020, but the event was unfortunately cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
