Ocean Race Europe Inshore Finale
Class leaders Offshore Team Germany (GER) and Mirpuri Foundation Racing Team (POR) have been confirmed as the respective IMOCA and VO65 winners in the inaugural edition of The Ocean Race Europe, after an exciting final day of coastal racing in Genova, Italy today.

The points spread was close at the top of the seven-boat VO65 and five-boat IMOCA 60 fleets, and with bonus points up for grabs for the top three finishers in each class in the planned 90-minute sprint race around the Gulf of Genova, the final standings remained open.

Windless conditions at the scheduled start time of 1200 CEST / 1000 UTC forced the race committee to postpone until a new breeze arrived and racing finally got underway at around 1340 local time. Racing took place in 7 to 10 knots of southeasterly sea breeze.

Cornish Black Dog - RORC IRC National Champions
Time and tide wait for no man - with the feint zephyrs of wind failing to stabilize, there was no racing on the final day of Royal Ocean Racing Club IRC National Championship. The IRC Class leaders after six races remain unchanged.

IRC 1
Niklas Zennstrom's FAST40+ Rán won IRC One by a single point from Peter Morton's GP42 Jean Genie. Hamilton & Gillon's GP42 Khumbu was third, just a point behind Jean Genie. Ed Fishwick's GP42 Redshift finished the regatta in fourth. Rán retains the class win from 2020, and this is the fourth occasion that Rán Racing has won at the RORC IRC National Championship.

IRC 2
Stuart Sawyer's J/122 Black Dog was the winner ahead of Rob Bottomley's Mat 12 Sailplane. Russell Peters' Cape 31 Squirt finished the regatta in third place for the class. The 16-strong class was very competitive with six boats scoring race-podium finishes including, Michael Blair's King 40 Cobra, Mills 39 Zero II sailed by James Gair, and Lance Adams' Cape 31 Katabatic.

IRC 3
Adam Gosling's JPK 1080 Yes! scored four race wins to become the IRC National Champion for IRC Three. Gosling has won class at the IRC Championship a record five times. Howell & Newell's A35 Arcus, reigning IRC Overall National Champion, was class runner up this year. McNamara & Lowe's First 40.7 Incognito was third in class. John Cooper's J/112E Jooped missed the podium by just half a point! The 12-strong class saw seven boats score race-podium finishes including, John Allen's X 302 Antix, Bruce Huber's J/112E Xanaboo, and Toby Gorman's Sigma 33 Stan The Boat.

Detailed Results

Racing with the Royal Ocean Racing Club continues offshore with the RORC Season's Points Championship. The De Guingand Bowl Race is scheduled to start on Saturday 26th June from the RYS Line in Cowes.

A no-limits production! - X-Yachts
X-Yachts Freed from the constraints of racing and rating considerations X-Yachts could explore every avenue in pursuit of their latest and best ever all round high performer

Imagine a yacht that's thrillingly fast and fun to sail but isn't shaped and built according to the constraints of a rulebook. A responsive, rewarding yacht that sails and handles brilliantly in a wide variety of wind and sea conditions, on all points of sail, and hasn't been optimised just for windward-leeward courses. One with more than ample space, comfort and contemporary style inside but without any compromises made at the expense of sailing balance or performance. A yacht that can easily handle the wildest weather you're ever likely to encounter, but also excels at fair-weather family cruising. That's the design DNA of X-Yachts' Pure X range.

The new X5 6, launched into the icy waters of Baltic Denmark in the depths of December for initial sea trials, is designed, engineered and built to take this ongoing evolution of the perfect all-round performance cruiser to a whole new level.

Fareast 28R Selected For WMRT Finals
The World Match Racing Tour today announced the Fareast 28R keelboat has been selected and approved for the Shenzhen Bao'an Match Cup, host of the WMRT Finals in Shenzhen China, 15-19 December 2021. A new fleet of seven Fareast 28R's will be built for the event by Shanghai based manufacturer Far East Boats, a World Sailing One-Design Class.

The selection of the Simonis-Voogd designed Fareast 28R for the WMRT Finals was agreed following consultation between WMRT and the Shenzhen Bao'an District Government, host sponsor of the Shenzhen Bao'an Match Cup which will host the WMRT Finals from 2021-2025 in an agreement secured with the Tour last year.

Established in 2002, Far East Boats has built over 18,000 boats to date across a comprehensive range of dinghies and keelboats, racing yachts, catamarans and rigid inflatables. The company is represented in over 50 countries and all boats are built in Far East Boats own state-of-the-art 20,000sq meter facility just outside Shanghai with a capacity to build between 30 - 40 Fareast 28Rs per month.

The new fleet of seven Fareast 28R yachts will be built around October prior to being commissioned and delivered for the event in December. The boats will have the very latest modifications following feedback from a number of professional sailors over the last few months.

The inaugural Shenzhen Bao'an Match Cup will play host to the WMRT Finals from 15-19 December in Shenzhen, China.

Melges World League - Argentario Rally
The curtain falls on the Argentario Rally, the second event of the international Melges World League circuit, which over the weekend attracted over forty crews representing eleven nations to the race course of Cala Galera.

A complete series of eight races made it possible to determine yesterday, as scheduled, the winner in the Melges 32 fleet, responding to the name of Tavatuy.

With light wind conditions, the Melges 20 and Melges 14 fleets also managed to complete series of eight and six races respectively, the maximum foreseen by the notice of race, thanks to the excellent organization in the water coordinated by PROs Maria Torrijo and Gabriella Gabrielli, supported by Melges Europe, Circolo Nautico e della Vela Argentario and Marina di Cala Galera.

The battle was open until the last in the Melges 20 fleet, where Filippo Pacinotti's Brontolo established himself as leader. The crew of the reigning world champions, at their seasonal debut in the Melges World League, made consistency their strong point on the last day of racing and, with partial results of 4-2-1, managed to leave behind Fremito d'Arja by Dario Levi, who wins the silver medal on equal points with the winners but with worse partial results. Bronze medal for an extremely consistent Matteo Marenghi Vaselli with Raya. Rounding out the top five are the Russian crews of Russian Bogatyrs and Hubex.

In the Corinthian fleet the victory goes to Neodent of Marco Giannini, eighth overall, followed by B.Lex of Benedetta Iovane and Mojito of the very young helmsman Elena Rixner.

Among the Melges 14, the winner was Davide Di Maio who managed to maintain control of the ranking also in the second day, putting the seal to the second race of the Melges 14 World League 2021. Second place for Alessio Muciaccia, among the most experienced sailors of the Melges 14 Class, while the bronze medal went to Gustavo Viannan from Brazil.

What Is The Impact Of The Decision Against Offshore Racing For The Olympic Games?
As was widely expected the International Olympic Committee (IOC) ruled offshore racing will not be on the programme for the Paris 2024 Games, choosing instead to split the kite discipline to male and female. What might be the consequences of this (late) decision on the flourishing mixed doubles scene and women's access to offshore racing? Tip & Shaft reviewed the situation...

The decision was confirmed on Thursday 10 June. Despite World Sailing's favourable democratic decision, offshore racing will not make an appearance on the Olympic programme for the Paris 2024 Games. The IOC considered that they had not receive sufficient guarantees on a certain number of issues (safety, costs, complexity, absence of previous tests, etc.).

While the announcement did not really surprise anyone who had an interest in offshore, it was very badly received by those who defended the case and especially the athletes who had made this event an important career objective. Such is particularly the case for the Belgian Jonas Gerckens who sums up: "I think that the IOC unfortunately missed the mark. When you see the craze that there is for doubles - and in my opinion, it will only grow more in the next few years - it's a real shame, especially since we are removing a mixed event for an individual event which is divided into two parts."

It is the same disappointment for American Ken Read, president of North Sails, Volvo Ocean Race skipper and former America's Cup winner: "As my old boss Dennis Conner once told me 'never bet against people's self interest' so that is unfortunate. I think is a real shame as it had a real opportunity to show sailing off in a different light in the Olympics at one of the most televised events in history. This had a chance to be different and get on television, human vulnerability, to show something different. So, I like many, many others am very disappointed."

Cowes Week To Host UK Sonar National Championship
The biggest fleet of Sonar one designs for more than a decade will gather at Cowes Week 2021 for the UK Sonar National Championship which is being run as part of the Regatta.

Sailed by individuals of all abilities, from novice and experienced crews, both with mixed genders and sailors with disabilities, the Sonar fleet in Cowes boasts the largest fleet of 14 boats based between the Island Sailing Club (ISC) and Cowes Corinthian Yacht Club (CCYC).

The initiative to revive the class is being driven by the Andrew Cassell Foundation (ACF) and the CCYC and supported by Sussex Yacht Club (SYC) to give its sailors inspirational targets to progress to. They are expected to be joined by four boats from SYC, and ACF are also hoping to inspire some more UK boats/charter boats to enter which could bring a total fleet of 20+ boats, making the event as large as the 2019 World Championships held in America. The fleet will contest the Championship over seven races, competing for 'The Bank Sails Trophy'.

Charter boats may be available from the Island Sailing Club and other sources, please contact for more information.

Farewell Sir Peter Harrison
Every time I potter down the Medina River in Cowes, my eye is drawn naturally to the old GBR Challenge boatyard where the hulks of the IACC's 'Wight Lightning' (GBR 70) and 'Wight Magic' (GBR 78) lay exposed to the elements and an uncertain fate like two old lushes that have seen better days. They are shorn of their lead winged bulb keels but they still enthral me and the memories come flooding back of those heady challenge days out on the Solent when a real golden generation of UK sailors, led by the incredible Ian Walker, worked their socks off to mount a credible challenge for the Cup in Auckland in 2003.

Funding the syndicate was Peter Harrison, a former accountant for Ford who collected over £300m through the sale of his company, Chernikeef Networks, when he sold it to Dimension Data in 2000. Not bad for a company that he took control of in 1979 for just £133,000. Chernikeeff Networks was, at the time, the UK's largest privately owned network integration services company and by linking up with California-based Cisco Systems in 1987, was one of the earliest computer services groups in Britain to become involved in the internet revolution.

Having made his money, Peter set about ploughing it into grand prix and grass roots sailing by his involvement with the America's Cup, a string of 50+ footers all emblazoned with Chernikeef and his mega-maxi Sojana but also feeding a huge sum of money through his Peter Harrison Foundation.

Peter's long held belief was in opportunities for self-development through participation in sport - particularly the socially disadvantaged and disabled and for the care of children with special needs. He placed education high on his grant list with Harrison Scholarships and support of Reigate Grammar School (and Reigate Rugby Club!). In short, he was a thoroughly decent man and he was rightly knighted and awarded the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Nation in 2013.

So it's with great sadness to hear of Sir Peter's passing but what I found so touching was to see on Facebook today that the members of the GBR Challenge team - the likes of my old pal Andy Green, Simon Fry, Ian Walker and others - adjusting their profile pictures to replace them with their official shots from the GBR Challenge in 2003.
