The Ocean Race Europe
Live Stream Of The Finishes

0100 CEST -- AkzoNobel Ocean Racing will likely be the next to finish and just like the Mirpuri boat in front of them, they've made some late moves by sailing further offshore, nearly along the track of the boat in front. A nice move by skipper Chris Nicholson and navigator Will Harris.

0055 CEST -- And they've done it!! A famous win in Leg 3 of The Ocean Race Europe for Mipuri Foundation Racing Team and skipper Yoann Richomme. This will keep them at the top of the leaderboard heading into the coastal race on Saturday.

0045 CEST -- Just a couple of miles to the finish line now, probably one more tack.

0030 CEST -- This lead was engineered in the final hours, with a bold tack offshore, where the team picked up more breeze to race past Sailing Poland, who had led for most of the leg. A brilliant, late, move to get into the winning position.

0020 CEST -- Mirpuri Foundation Race Team is well positioned to finish off a remarkable come from behind win for Leg 3.

Ocean race Leg 3 Finish

A fleet of 138 yachts sets out to conquer the Giraglia
There were 138 yachts on the Sanremo start line at midday today in perfect conditions that were better than expected yesterday: a 15kn easterly that allowed a splendid start with first the 18 big maxis (of more than 18 m) of group 0, then it was the turn of the 64 yachts in group 1 and finally the smaller ones in group 2.

It was a spectacular start with the line a few hundred metres from the breakwater of the old port of Sanremo and an offset mark about 1 1/2 miles to the east; from there the yachts hoisted their big asymmetrical spinnakers and quickly disappeared towards the first mark in Cala del Forte.

This was the last mark in the Italian part of the race, with the second mark of this unprecedented Rolex Giraglia at Chretienne off the Rade d'Agay, about 15 miles from the Gulf of Saint-Tropez with a committee boat of the Société Nautique de Saint Tropez waiting to record the roundings of all the yachts.

During the remainder of the day the wind was expected to drop and then back Southwest and intensify (this morning about 15/18 kn were forecast) from tomorrow. And while the race record is not under threat (in 2012 Igor Simcic's Esimit Europa 2 logged a time of 14 hours, 56 minutes and 16 seconds) the big battle will be for "line honours", with the big 30 m yachts that started eating up the miles right from the start and are expected to arrive in Genoa between midday and 4 PM tomorrow. As mentioned, stronger and more stable winds are expected for late tomorrow afternoon and could favour the trailing boats that could thus close the gap in compensated time and overtake the larger and faster 100 footers such as Magic Carpet Cubed, Arca SGR and Leopard 3, who will have been sailing with lighter winds.

So the game is still very open and the organisers are waiting for news from the Rade d'Agay and later, after hundred and 10 miles of open sea, from the Giraglia islet. At the time of writing, the big yachts were making more than 10 kn with Arca SGR rounding the French mark at around 4:30 PM.

New from Dubarry: proper sailing polo shirts
Dubarry Polo shirts are great for active summer sailing. The higher collar keeps the sun off your neck and the relaxed fit gives full freedom of movement, without being so loose that they flap in a fresh breeze or risk getting caught in a winch. That said, many polo shirts aren't ideal. They can take too long to dry out and you want to be sure that the fabric provides complete, reliable sun protection for your skin. Dubarry has the solution: a new range of sailing-specific polos, with short and long sleeves, in men's, women's and unisex styles. Key design features include a holder loop for your sunglasses and when you need to wipe the salt spray off them, you'll find a handy eyewear cleaning cloth discreetly hidden in the hem.

Freshford and Sorrento are lightweight and sporty polos with a ribbed collar and subtle texture. They're made from soft but durable poly-cotton with UPF 40 sun protection. They're also quick-drying, highly breathable, actively wick moisture away from your skin, and have odour-preventing antimicrobial protection built in.

Menton and Riviera are new styles of technical polo designed for performance, comfort and protection with a perfectly tailored fit. Breathability is enhanced with a perforated fabric in all the right places. When you're out in bright sunshine they'll also shield you from UV exposure, with UPF 50 protection – the equivalent of an extra-strong sunblock.

Runners and Riders - IRC National Championship 18-20 June
Over 40 teams will be competing for three days of thrilling racing in the Solent. Up to eight races will be fiercely contested with the fleet split into three IRC Classes. The overall winner will be awarded the RORC IRC National Championship Trophy and together with IRC Class winners, they will celebrate at the RORC Clubhouse in Cowes.

IRC One
Niklas Zennstrom's FAST40+ Ran, will be defending their class win in 2020, Zennstrom's team also won the class with TP52 Ran in 2008 and 2009. Peter Morton will be racing his GP42 Jean Genie. Morton has helmed three boats to class victory of the years: IC45 Yes (2001), Half Tonner Swuzzlebubble (2014) and FAST40+ Girls on Film (2019). IRC One will also feature the first encounter between two IC37s in the Solent with Ian Atkins' Icy and Bertie Bicket's Fargo going toe-to-toe.

IRC Two
Five Cape31s are expected for the IRC Championship, the first time that the Mark Mills designed pocket rockets have been racing at the event. Stuart Sawyer's J/122 Black Dog, overall winner in 2019, will be racing with his West Country team. A past winner under new ownership is the Mills 39 Zero II, skippered by James Gair

IRC Three
The 2020 overall IRC National Champion is back to defend the title. Howell and Newell's A35 Arcus posted a perfect scoreline to win the championship. Adam Gosling's JPK 1080 Yes! is the scratch boat for the class. Statistically, Gosling is the most successful skipper in the history of the event, having won class four times in various boats, all called Yes! (2009, 2011, 2016, 2017). In 2016, Adam Gosling's Yes! had the unusual distinction of a tie for the overall win with Dunkerque - Les Dunes de Flandre. Giovanni Belgrano's one-off classic Whooper will also be racing this year, hoping to emulate their overall win in 2017. -- Louis Habib

America's Cup: No major announcements at RNZYS members briefing
The America's Cup briefing for Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron members only, turned into a rather low-key affair, with no major announcements.

The Ball-Room at RNZYS was standing room only, according to a report from one of those present.

There was little discussion of the reported attempts by a group of RNZYS members to gather signatures calling for a Special General Meeting over the handling of the next America's Cup.

CEO Grant Dalton addressed the meeting re-iterating what had already been announced about a Protocol being made public on September 17, six months after the ETNZ/RNZYS win.

More information may be forthcoming on later this week, from Wellington, following the conclusion of the 90-day "good faith" negotiation period.

Experienced America's Cup correspondent Todd Niall has a report here -- Richard Gladwell

Statement from Emirates Team New Zealand
Emirates Team New Zealand (ETNZ) representing the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron (RNZYS) and the Government, along with Auckland Council, have concluded exclusive discussions regarding funding for the next America's Cup (AC37) following ETNZ's successful defence in Auckland of the 36th America's Cup in March this year.

During the three-month exclusive negotiating period between New Zealand agencies and ETNZ, they have not been able to reach a conclusion that works for all parties. All three parties have worked through these discussions with the best of intentions to see the AC37 hosted in Auckland, and they have not been able to reach agreement by the expiration of the exclusive period.

Emirates Team New Zealand will now commence discussions with other nations to look into options regarding hosting AC37 events.

"By all means, the end of the exclusive negotiation period does not eliminate all possibility of the event or an event being hosted in New Zealand. If resources enable an event in New Zealand we will remain open to it. But, we must explore other opportunities to ensure we can put up another successful defence. No matter where in the world we are, we will always be Team New Zealand. Our priority has always been to keep and defend the America's Cup successfully. We certainly want to explore holding a regatta in Auckland and along with discussing the venue for AC37 with other nations, would like to work through that opportunity also", said Grant Dalton.

RNZYS Commodore Aaron Young said "Whilst we also remain hopeful that the cup can stay in New Zealand it would be prudent to now explore other options as well, with the primary objective to ensure we keep the America's Cup trophy in the cabinet here at the club. As such we also understand the need to help ensure the viability of Emirates Team New Zealand so we have every opportunity to defend the America's Cup again, wherever that may be. It would be an unprecedented achievement to win the America's Cup 3 times in a row and taking the cup overseas may well offer the best chance for us to do so. At a meeting last night members were presented with this option and I believe generally understood this might need to happen."

Cork Harbour Lining up for 2024 America's Cup Bid
Cork Harbour is lining up a bid for the rights to host the prestigious 2024 America's Cup yacht race — the oldest sporting trophy in the world that scooped over a billion dollars for the New Zealand economy when the event was held there in March this year.

According to The Examiner newspaper, a technical America's Cup team from the event's organising authority visited Cork city and harbour over the weekend for a range of technical briefings and site assessments, including an aerial assessment conducted during a flight over the harbour.

Cork Harbour is the second biggest natural harbour in the world, after Sydney Australia.

They were accompanied by Irish tourism bosses, as well as by city and county officials at various stages.

It is understood some key Cork sailing officials and professionals also attended the briefings.

A spokesperson for Mr Coveney confirmed he was part of a series of briefings but she declined to comment in any further detail.

It comes ahead of a decision, expected within days on whether or not current America's Cup title defenders, New Zealand, will exercise its right to defend its title at home or not.

Cowes and other venues are also understood to be considering bids in the event New Zealand opts to defend its title abroad.

RYA Launches New Wingsurfing Training Scheme
The RYA has officially launched its new WINGsurfing training scheme, with 12 RYA instructors now qualified to teach this exciting new watersport - a number expected to grow as the scheme pilots over the next 12 months.

The new scheme consists of four progressive courses, aimed at introducing complete beginners to wingsurfing and developing the skills needed to wingfoil with confidence.

Wingsurfing, and the more the advanced wingfoiling, both use a wing with an inflated leading edge on a strut or boom. Unlike windsurfing, the wing isn't attached to the board, but is controlled by your hands while you stand. As with conventional windsurfing, you can choose to fly the wing on a plain board, or one with foils.

No previous watersports experience is necessary, making it a great option for the whole family and all abilities and ages.
