Ocean Race leaders extend in new breeze
The crews competing in The Ocean Race Europe have spent a second restless night out on the Mediterranean searching for wind to help them along the race's third and final leg from Alicante, Spain to Genova, Italy.

Since leaving Alicante both classes have made stop/start progress due to patchy winds and large glassy areas of total flat calm littering the route to Genova.

The VO65 class has made the best collective progress so far, having made it past the Spanish islands of Mallorca and Menorca overnight, and into some welcome fresher northerly breeze filtering out across the Mediterranean from the French interior.

In the last 24 hours the leading pair - Sailing Team Poland, skippered by Bouwe Bekking (NED), with Norway's Aksel Magdhal as navigator, and Mirpuri Foundation Racing Team led by Yoann Richomme (FRA) with fellow Frenchman Nico Lunven navigating - have benefitted from being first into the new breeze and considerably extended the gap between them and the chasing pack.

In the IMOCA 60 class the northern route taken by Robert Stanjek's non-foiling Offshore Team Germany has continued to pay dividends.

Since yesterday evening the German yacht has managed to pull away into a 66-nm / 122-km lead over the four foiling IMOCAS - Louis Burton's Bureau Vallée (FRA) in second, Charlie Enright's 11th Hour Racing Team in third, Thomas Ruyant's LinkedOut in fourth, and Nicolas Troussel's CORUM L'Epargne (FRA) fifth.

Rolex Giraglia
There will be 147 yachts in the ORC, IRC and X2 classes for the start of the 241 mile offshore race. The course, for the first time this year, will have, before the Giraglia, two marks: one at Cala del Forte, the new Ventimiglia port, and the other at Chretienne of the Rade d'Agay, about 15 miles from the Gulf of St Tropez.

From there the boats will have a long leg towards the Giraglia islet which they will round anti clockwise and then head north. The finish, as is traditional, will be in Genoa in the splendid setting of the Porticciolo Duca degli Abruzzi which houses the headquarters of the Yacht Club Italiano, the organiser of this race which is by now part myth and part legend.

Meanwhile preparations are underway on the quays of Porto Antico and in the Yacht Club Sanremo race village with thousands of yachtsmen who have filled in an orderly way the splendid spaces prepared by Rolex to welcome them. There are 33 nations represented by crews of super professionals, friends and enthusiasts and veterans of the Giraglia.

In addition to the preparations to get the yachts in racing trim, the question everyone is asking is about the weather: what kind of Giraglia will it be? Many are expecting light easterlies for the start and for the first part of the day, veering westerly towards the evening but with light conditions for the first part of the race. Once they arrive in Corsica a moderate south-westerly should arrive to push the smaller boats quickly towards Genoa. So a fast Rolex Giraglia, though not very fast, but certainly with more than when done the two approach races.

The offshore race will also be broadcast live on Primocanale - Canale 10 digital, and on the YouTube channel of the Yacht Club Italiano.

The Rolex Giraglia 2021 is live every day until June 19 at 8 AM, 1 PM and 6 PM, in addition to online tracking at this link.

Three to battle for 68th Rolex Giraglia line honours
Italy's premier offshore race, the Rolex Giraglia sets sail tomorrow (Wednesday 16th June), the fourth event in the International Maxi Association's 2020-21 Mediterranean Maxi Offshore Challenge. Due to the pandemic, the event's organiser, Yacht Club Italiano, has been forced for the first time to keep the start and finish within Italy. As a result the start will be from Sanremo, the course heading for a mark at Cala del Forte off Ventimiglia, then into French waters to a turning mark off the Rade d'Agay (east of Frejus/Saint-Raphael). From there the normal course resumes heading to the Giraglia Rock off northern Corsica and on to the finish off Genoa.

This is not the first time Sanremo has hosted the Giraglia Race previously. Over the years it has been both a start and a finish port. Despite the change of course, its length will remain 241 miles, the same as the original scheduled course from Saint-Tropez to Genoa.

This year, of the Rolex Giraglia's 143 entrants, 17 are maxi yachts of 60+ft, racing in the IRC 0 fleet.

As usual de Froidmont will be campaigning his Wally 60 Wallyño, aboard which he became the first winner of the IMA's Mediterranean Maxi Inshore Challenge (MMIC) in 2019. Wallyño is freshly out of refit with a new deck, upgraded hydraulics and some new sails.

However de Froidmont will once again face stiff competition from Jean-Pierre Barjon's Swan 601 Lorina, which she narrowly beat to the MMIC title two years ago. Then there is the ever improving Reichel-Pugh 60 Wild Joe of Hungarian owner Márton Józsa plus the Mills Vismara 72s Leaps & Bounds of Jean-Philippe Blanpain and Luigi Sala's Yoru. -- James Boyd

America's Cup: Lawyer wants open vote on whether defence goes offshore
America's Cup lawyer and Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron (RNZYS) member Hamish Ross says he wants a democratic vote on whether the next defence might be held offshore.

Team New Zealand boss Grant Dalton will on Tuesday night brief members of the RNZYS, which the team represents, on the funding issue that led it to canvass global deals to host the next defence.

The evening meeting comes two days before the end of a three-month period in which the Government has exclusive rights to negotiate a hosting deal, with tensions beginning to rise.

Ross said he hoped to gather more of the 25 signatures needed to call a formal general meeting, to vote on the possibility of the cup defence being held overseas.

Harsh words have been exchanged in the media in the build-up to the vote, with Team New Zealand pointing to Ross' ties to a challenger.

"Mr Ross appears to be leading the agenda of the NYYC who he represents by seeking to impose their agenda on the RNZYS and the 37th America's Cup," it said in a statement. -- Todd Niall

St Petersburg Hosted the Legendary Sailing Yacht Race "100 Miles Cup"
The historical race "100 Miles Cup" brought together almost the whole cruising fleet of St Petersburg. The competitions were held in four scoring groups: L-6 national yacht class, ORC1, ORC2, and Free Class.

29 boats took part in the anniversary 20th edition of the revived "100 Miles Cup". The legendary L-6 class of St Petersburg had the most impressive lineup as the tradition has it. 12 yachts went to the starting line in this scoring group. All in all the race brought together 178 yachtsmen, who were fighting for the cherished challenge cup.

"We would like to bring back the international status of this race", the President of St Petersburg Sailing Union Sergey Alexeev says, "The English yachtsmen took part in the very first "100 Miles Cup" in 1852 and they won the final victory, by the way. We try to preserve these links of time and carry them through centuries. We hope that in the future we will manage to attract yachtsmen from all over the world to make this event truly international and unite the whole yachting community."

The race was started on the Day of Russia - the 12th of June, at 13:00 in the open sea, to the West of the Kronstadt Island. At the start, the wind of 15-16 knots was blowing and the start was held under the downwind sails with tough competition for positions. In course of two hours, the wind became stronger up to 20-22 knots and the first boats reached the Island of Nerva by 18:00.

The "100 Miles Cup" was held for the first time in 1852, and its route has not changed ever since: it starts near the Island of Kotlin, then the yachts go around the Island of Nerva with their portside and finish near the Island of Kotlin. The length of the distance is 100 nautical miles. The representatives of St Petersburg yacht club and several English yacht clubs took part in the first "100 Miles Cup". All in all, there were 11 boats in the first race around the Island of Nerva. The British schooner "Claymore" became the winner of that historical competition, having covered the distance of 100 miles in less than 15 hours.

The historical "100 Miles Race" was held for the first time one year after the "100 Guineas Cup" in England, which laid the foundation of the most prestigious international regatta - the "America's Cup".

In 2001, the L-6 Association and the sport club of Leningrad Naval Base revived the historical tradition and since that time the "100 Miles Cup" races have been organized annually again.

The Power of the Squad: Q&A Live Call with Olympic Medallist Aaron McIntosh
The Power of the Squad is undeniable, so why do so few sailors club together and work as a shared unit? The skill of the coach is sometimes to bring rivals together and have them working towards a shared goal. Aaron McIntosh won a windsurfing bronze medal for New Zealand at the Sydney 2000 Games. Since then he has worked with Dorian van Rijsselberghe, coaching the Dutch windsurfer to back-to-back gold medals at London 2012 and Rio 2016. But van Rijsselberghe was pipped to Tokyo selection by his great friend and training partner, Kiran Badloe who will go to Tokyo as the favourite to win yet another windsurfing gold for the Netherlands.

Join Aaron for an in-depth Q&A this week with the Road To Gold team, Hamish Willcox and Andy Rice.

When?

The Q&A kicks off on Zoom at 8pm UK time/ 9pm Central European Time on Wednesday evening 16 June. That's 7am Thursday morning 17 June in Auckland, where Hamish is in the final weeks of training with Pete Burling & Blair Tuke on their 49er campaign for the Olympic Regatta next month in Tokyo.

Here's how you get on the call:

1. Make sure you're signed up to the Road To Gold Facebook Group to get the Zoom link to the call.

2. Click on the Zoom link and register to join the call this Wednesday/Thursday (depending on where you are in the world!)

Ibiza JoySail Regatta Postponed Until October
The inaugural Ibiza JoySail Regatta organised by STP Shipyard Palma, Marina Ibiza and Club Náutico de Ibiza, with the support of the Consell de Ibiza, which was due to take place June 17-20, has been postponed to mid-October in light of the remaining health risk and travel issues in Europe, allowing owners, crews, friends and families to share in this new event, which aims to become an annual draw, in a unique destination that is the island of Ibiza.

The decision to move the dates towards the end of the season has already piqued the interest of several more superyacht and large yacht owners, who have expressed a desire to join the fleet at Ibiza Joysail.

"We want to keep the leitmotif of Ibiza Joysail, which is to create a great community of friends for many years, with thrilling competition. So we will wait to make it happen in October with greater enthusiasm, with fewer restrictions and more options to enjoy not only the Ibizan waters, but also a fun social agenda; and of course, to celebrate that we are all well and to commemorate the season passed," noted Daniel Marí, manager of Marina Ibiza.
