The Ocean Race Europe: Close finishes in Leg 2
The second leg of The Ocean Race Europe finished in Alicante, Spain on Wednesday, the culmination of three days of tight racing between the 12 international crews since they left Cascais, Portugal on Sunday afternoon.

The second leg of the inaugural edition of the three stage European event, which will finish in Genova, Italy on June 19, proved to be a challenging affair with the professional ocean racing teams facing a wide range of conditions along the 700-nautical mile (nm) / 1,296-kilometre (km) course, finishing in Alicante, Spain, the home port of The Ocean Race, and the start venue for the round the world race in October 2022.

Conditions on the leg ranged from fast downwind sailing in the Atlantic on the first day and night along the Portuguese coast to battling gale-force headwinds in the Gibraltar Strait on day two, and culminating with light wind, ghosting conditions for the final night in the Mediterranean Sea.

The VO65 one-design yachts proved to be versatile across all these weather conditions, with all seven making it to Alicante by midday local time Wednesday, around 11nm / 20 km ahead of the five IMOCA 60s.

The third and final leg of The Ocean Race Europe to Genova, Italy starts on Sunday June 13.

Chess on the water at Hempel World Cup Series - Allianz Regatta
The Hempel World Cup Series - Allianz Regatta entered the second part of the competition on Wednesday 9 June as the 49er and 49erFX fleets took to the water in Medemblik, The Netherlands.

After five days of racing last week that saw the first Hempel World Cup Series medals since January 2020 awarded to sailors in the ILCA 6, ILCA 7, Men's and Women's RS:X and Nacra 17, it was time for the skiffs to race.

Apart from Sunday's Medal Races, light wind has been a prevalent in Medemblik throughout the event and the first day of racing for the 32-boat 49er fleet and 18-boat 49erFX fleet was a tactical affair.

Three days of qualification races are remaining for the 49er and 49erFX fleet as sailors fight for a place in Sunday's deciding Medal Races.

You, Harken, Vang-Master and Perfect Top Batten Control
Vang-Master Harken has teamed up with Marine Products Engineering to offer Harken Vang-Master rigid pneumatic mechanical vangs. That’s right, the Vang-Master uses air to provide the extension pressure that holds booms up—no need for fluid or hoses. And they offer unlimited adjustment without springs and their squeaks. Every Vang-Master is built of hardcote-anodized 6061-T6 aluminum. Tubing and end-fittings thread together to eliminate fasteners and reduce corrosion caused by dissimilar metals.

To help make the selection process easier, Harken Vang-Masters come in four-cylinder diameters. There’s a menu of 120+ build lengths for everything from J-80s to Santa Cruz 70s to get you close. But even stock one-designs can be slightly different. So compare the list with your own pin-to-pin measurement for the perfect fit. External purchase systems are sold separately and supplied with line specifically selected for its application, pre-measured, and spliced with 100% Harken hardware. And now an assortment of mast and boom fittings are also offered— a complete solution.

Harken distribution makes Vang-Master easy to obtain, while making sure technical support is there and there’s with fast turnaround on spare parts. Is it time to replace that aging vang? It’s easier now. We’re pumped!

NYYC Annual Regatta
New York Yacht Club's Annual Regatta was first sailed on the Hudson River on July 16 and 18, 1846. A similar competition the previous year was called a Trial of Speed. With a few exceptions for world wars and other global crises, the event has been held every year since. For the majority of its existence, the New York Yacht Club held its Annual Regatta on waters close to New York City. Since 1988, however, the event has been sailed out of the Harbour Court clubhouse in Newport, R.I., and has settled into the current three-day format, which includes a race around Conanicut Island on Friday and two days of buoy racing or navigator-course racing on Saturday and Sunday. The 167th Annual Regatta is sponsored by Hammetts Hotel, Safe Harbor Marinas and Helly Hansen.

A new feature for the class this year is the presence of professional sailors. While the class's focus remains on Corinthian sailors, each team is permitted one paid expert. Grondin's team will be led by world match racing champion Taylor Canfield.

Among the 16 teams sailing in the Melges IC37 Class are a handful of crews aiming toward the New York Yacht Club's berth in the Rolex New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup, which will take place this coming September. Because the rules for the Invitational Cup prohibit any professional sailors, these teams are made up solely of amateur sailors. The qualifying series will include the Saturday and Sunday of Annual Regatta, along with the class's North American championship in July.

Racing in the 167th edition of the Annual Regatta will start with the traditional lap of Conanicut Island on Friday, June 11. That race is scored separately from the weekend series, which features buoy or point-to-point racing for boats racing in one-design classes and under ORC, PHRF and classic-yacht rating formulas. -- Stuart Streuli/NYYC

Bermuda Race Entries Open Next Week; Race Starts June 17, 2022
The Bermuda Race Organizing Committee (BROC) has published the official Notice of Race for the second attempt at the 52nd running of the 635-mile Bermuda Race. (The 2020 race was cancelled due to the impact of the pandemic.)

As many as 200 entries are expected to start the race on June 17, 2022, and the race's SailGate entry system will be open on June 18, 2021, one year ahead of time. Captains with accounts already set up in SailGate will be able to update their profile information in advance of next Friday, but all entrants will be able to begin their entry applications in earnest on the 18th.

Entry fees are similar to 2020, with discounts offered for early entry. In addition, due to the good will of several race vendors who passed on contracted fees from 2020 to 2022, the BROC is able to provide 2022 entrants full credit for deposits paid by entrants for the 2020 race. Captains will find credits reflected in their current SailGate accounts

Vendee Globe heroes join Rolex Fastnet Race
Almost six months after they competed in the world's most brutal race, the singlehanded non-stop lap of the planet that is the Vendee Globe, many of the IMOCA fleet will be returning to the race course for the first time in August's Rolex Fastnet Race.

Aside from the added attraction of the race now ending up in home waters with the finish moving for the first time to Cherbourg, for the IMOCA teams the Royal Ocean Racing Club's flagship event is also a qualifier for November's Transat Jacques Vabre. Running from Le Havre to Martinique (via Fernando di Noronha off Brazil), this event is doublehanded and the world's most advanced offshore monohulls will also sail in this configuration for the Rolex Fastnet Race.

The line-up is impressive. It includes Charlie Dalin on Apivia who was first home into Les Sables d'Olonne in late January, until Maitre CoQ, skippered by Yannick Bestaven, subsequently became the race's winner after he was awarded time compensation for his part in the rescue of Kevin Escoffier.

The American Ocean Race team 11th Hour Racing has not one, but two IMOCAs entered. This includes the 2016 vintage former HUGO BOSS, being campaigned by the mixed Anglo-Swiss crew of Volvo Ocean Race veteran Simon Fisher and Justine Mettraux. But all eyes could be on the campaign's latest steed, to be sailed by American Charlie Enright and top French offshore sailor Pascal Bidegorry. Whether she will make it is in the balance: The launch of this new Guillaume Verdier design, built by CDK Technologies and project managed by Francois Gabart's company MerConcept, is scheduled for the end of July leaving precious little work-up time before the 8 August start of the Rolex Fastnet Race.

Significantly this will be the first new flying IMOCA launched with the Ocean Race in mind, rather than the Vendee Globe. However, Enright, who two years ago was outright winner of the Rolex Fastnet Race as sailing master on the Askew brothers' VO70 Wizard, explains they are hedged. "In some ways we are optimised for both crewed and shorthanded racing, and in other ways we have definitely compromised to be able to wear both hats in this fleet. It is the first IMOCA built with 'the Ocean Race as its primary objective'." -- Trish Jenkins

Morgan Cup Race bound for Dartmouth
Photo by BRNC Dartmouth. Click on image to enlarge.

Dartmouth The Royal Ocean Racing Club Season's Points Championship continues with the Morgan Cup Race, which will start on Friday June 11th and finish at the historic town of Dartmouth, Devon. One of the jewels in the crown among West Country harbours, Dartmouth's shipbuilding heritage dates back to the 13th century. Over 70 yachts are expected for the Morgan Cup racing under IRC, MOCRA and Class40 rules.

"The race will start to the east at 1800, so it will be a different scenario to the Myth of Malham," commented RORC Deputy Racing Manager, Tim Thubron. "Weather forecasts show a variety of wind in both speed and direction for the race. A light to moderate westerly is predicted for the start, making for a spinnaker run east in the Solent. The fleet should be hardening up on the southside of the Isle of Wight with crews readying themselves for an overnight sail to Dartmouth. The wind is due to abate in the early hours of Saturday morning, which will add another dimension to the tactics. A big thank you to the Royal Dart Yacht Club, which has been extremely helpful in assisting the RORC. I am sure it will be a popular venue for teams that visit Dartmouth after the race."

Over 30 teams are expected to be racing in IRC Three, including many teams racing Two-Handed. Fully crewed entries include Trevor Middleton's Sun Fast 3600 Black Sheep. Skippered by Jake Carter, Black Sheep was the overall winner of the 2019 RORC Season's Points Championship. Five J/109s will be racing fully crewed, including the Royal Naval Sailing Association's Jolly Jack Tar, skippered by Thomas Reed. The Royal Navy has been training service men and women in Dartmouth since 1863. The Britannia Royal Naval College is a majestic landmark above Dartmouth.

Yachts taking part in the Morgan Cup Race will start to gather off Cowes Parade from around 1700 on Friday 11th June. The RORC fleet can be tracked using the YB App for smartphones and tablets. With the introduction of new models like the Hylas 60 and Hylas 57 the designers paid much attention to the structural interior. However, there are opportunities to make delicate changes that can be considered beyond color, fabrics, textures and finishes. What is missing with the launch of a new model is the benefit of multiple owners having applied their own thoughts and ultimately providing the guidance for the next generation.

Introducing an interior designer for each build would be a costly undertaking for the new owner. This would also be prohibitive for the factory as there is a significant impact on the factory's ability to source from known suppliers that allow the yard to manage quality and monitor service. That being said wouldn't it be nice to just let go and see what an award-winning interior designer could do with the yacht?

Hylas 57

In recent years there have been huge developments in design software and the introduction of synthetic materials that hold up well in the marine environment. The question then is how to help owners buying the new models to appreciate these possibilities without the benefit of multiple preceding builds. The answer comes from an introduction to Hot Lab, an interior yacht design house based in Italy. They are well established in the super yacht world and have been working with Hylas for close to 5 years.

The owners of hull #3 of the H57, are no strangers to the value an award winning interior designer can bring to the project. They have given Hot Lab a fairly open brief and, between the concept drawings and mood boards developed by Hot Lab, have come up with an interior that is quite striking. The interior is clearly "designer" and befitting a yacht that brings a new level enhanced lifestyle to the performance cruiser market.

Built as Goshawk in 2005, Zemphira will launch in the Spring of 2021 after a substantial re-fit, ready to take on all-comers in Classic Yacht Spirit of Tradition racing throughout New England.

Zemphira

Paul and I designed Goshawk while the in-house design team at Brooklin Boat Yard. Construction was a collaboration with the hull built by Rockport Marine and then towed across Penobscot Bay to be completed with us at Brooklin Boat Yard. This design features a long, narrow hull with long classic overhangs, a deep but rather conservative fin keel with bulb, and a spade rudder. Her rig appears small for her length, but that's because she is so light that little sail area is required to drive her to max speed. The combination produces a stiletto-like sailboat, sleek and easy to maneuver, with speed and power.

Goshawk's original design brief created an ocean racer in the Spirit of Tradition style. After launch she competed in the 2005 and 2007 Marblehead to Halifax Races, the 2006 Newport to Bermuda Race where she finished second in the Gibbs Hill Division (allows professional sailors), and the classic yacht Spirit of Tradition race circuit in New England. Her brief also kept her simple enough for family to manage while daysailing and cruising in Maine and Nova Scotia. By all metrics Goshawk was a success and her first owner sold her in 2008 only after having us, as Stephens Waring Yacht Design, create a new Spirit of Tradition yacht for him.

Goshawk's second owner loved her very much but time restrictions kept her stored in a shed for much of the next decade. When she was put on the water however, her performance was still top shelf while racing in Spirit of Tradition events. The question arises, however, what happens when a 15-year-old design/build is brought out of the shed after more years pass and prepared for her next act?

YYachts in Greifswald will hand over four yachts to their owners this spring. The start was recently made with "Vegas Baby". This stylish 24-meter sloop is currently completing sea trials on the Baltic Sea off Greifswald with her crew.

WHAT

The construction and the sporty, timeless exterior styling are the work of Lorenzo Argento. The Italian comments on his work as follows:

"This project is a nice example of how a good design brief comes to fruition. We have slightly redesigned the hull compared to our original Y8 design, especially at the rear by redefining the stern geometry and the control console. The cockpit also offers slightly greater protection as a result of these measures."

Inside, the owner of the "Vegas Baby" drew inspiration from a previously built Y8. Francesca Modica of YYachts' design team says, "The customer liked `Makai` so much that `Vegas Baby` got a very similar interior. We only modified the crew mess and galley a bit."

Overall, the interior designed by Design Unlimited can be described as very modern - light woods contrast with a dark floor and gray fabrics.

Dirk Zademack, Managing Partner at YYachts, comments, "It was a lot of fun to build this stylish yacht. Also `Vegas Baby` fulfills our philosophy of light, fast, luxurious and easy to handle vessels; she will turn heads in any Mediterranean marina."
