Maloney and Junior run the show on penultimate day of Porto Finn Gold Cup
New Zealand's Andy Maloney has extended his lead at the 2021 Finn Gold Cup in Porto, Portugal, to take a five-point lead into the final day on Wednesday, with three races possible. Zsombor Berecz, the 2018 champion, from Hungary, moves up to second, while defending champion Josh Junior, also from New Zealand, climbs to third.

Race wins went to Brazil's Jorge Zarif, in the very light first race, before Nenad Bugarin, from Croatia, and Junior won the next two races in winds of up to 16 knots.

After no racing for two days, everyone was happy to get racing again and what a day it was. It was actually a day of three thirds, with a very light opening race of 6-8 knots, followed by clearing skies and a slightly tougher race of 12-14 knots, before finally clouding over and picking up to 14-16 knots in the final race. The one constant though was the shifting wind, which kept the sailors on their toes and the race teams busy repositioning marks for almost every leg.

Maloney and Junior are sailing their first major regatta for 15 months, after time out for the America's Cup and SailGP, so their performance is particularly impressive, as well as worrying for everyone else as they prepare for the Olympics in just over two month's time. In contrast, Berecz has won back to back European titles.

The Toyko 2020 European Continental qualifier is heading for a nail biting conclusion with four sailors inside the top 10. Spain's Joan Cardona is fourth, but just six points ahead of Croatia's Nenad Bugarin, while the European bronze medalist, Nils Theuninck from Switzerland, is in ninth place, a further 17 points back. However it is a long way from being over.

Three races are possible on Wednesday and the forecast indicates a good day of sailing is on the cards. Both Maloney and Junior have heavier discards than Berecz, but with three races, the championship is still wide open. Racing is scheduled to commence at 11.00 local time.

Rolex Capri Sailing Week
Registrations took place Monday for the fleet of maxi yachts that will take to the water today for the first race of the Rolex Capri Sailing Week. The first warning signal will sound at 10:55 a.m. for the maxis who will do battle in two separate classes (Performance and Classic), with a joint start and the same course assigned.

The crews will compete for four days, with the Maxi Yacht Capri Trophy concluding on Friday 14 May.

The forecasts for the next few days indicate light winds from the south for today before a front moves in between Wednesday and Thursday, bringing waves of 3 metres and southerly winds of 20 to 25 knots.

At the end of the first series of races in Capri, the boats will move to Naples for the start of the Regata dei Tre Golfi, after which the combined ranking of all the races held will decree the winner of the Rolex Maxi Yacht Capri Trophy, the coveted prize offered by main sponsor Rolex.

Among those sighted on the docks and training on the water were the impressive Adriatic-based crew of Anywave, the Frers 63 captained by Alberto Leghissa (4 world titles, 3 European titles, 4 Italian titles, 1 Mediterranean title), who is joined by veteran Mauro Pelaschier in the role of tactician and co-skipper.

Roberto Ferrarese will be calling tactics aboard the 60-foot Blue Oyster, Andrea Fornaro aboard Vincenzo Adessi's Mylius 60 Fra Diavolo, and Gabriele Bruni on the Swan 65 Shirlaf, owned by Giuseppe Puttini.

Live racing and playback can be followed online through the TracTrac tracking system.

World Sailing Virtual Mid-Year Meeting
World Sailing's Virtual Mid-Year Meeting continued on Tuesday 11 May with the Equipment Committee and Events Committee both holding their second and final meetings of the week.

The Equipment Committee, Chaired by Jurgen Cluytmans (BEL) met from 1000 - 1200 UTC before the Events Committee, Chaired by John Derbyshire (GBR), convened from 2000 - 2200 UTC.

Submission M01-21 received ten votes and Submission M02-21 received seven. This means that the Equipment Committee propose the Individual Men's and Women's Kiteboarding Events as the first alternative event and the Individual Men's and Women's Two Person Dinghy Events as the second alternative event.

This recommendation will now go to World Sailing's Council who will meet on Friday 14 May. They will discuss and vote on the submissions. The outcome of the process will be a decision of two alternative event proposals, ranked in order of preference, ahead of the IOC deadline, which is 26 May 2021.

Live Q&A Call: Sail Faster through Uncertain Times
Whether you're a club racer, a dedicated Weekend Warrior or a full-time Olympic athlete, how do you continue to move forwards as a racing sailor during uncertain times?

This is one of the questions that I will be addressing with top coach Hamish Willcox on a Zoom live chat this Wednesday 12 May at 5pm UK time/ 6pm Central European Time.

Head over to the new Road To Gold Facebook Group to get the Zoom link to the call. www.facebook.com/groups/roadtogoldsquad

Whatever level you're currently at with your sailing, join Hamish and me for Sail Faster through Uncertain Times, a 60-minute Q&A session to ask your specific questions, or just sit back and soak up the knowledge. This live call is part of Road To Gold, an online course launched last December which shares Hamish's 40 years of competing and coaching at world class level, as well as very successful spells at junior and youth level.

Theland NZ Open Keelboat Nationals
Eleven impressive teams will take to the water this Saturday 15th & Sunday 16th May in a bid to win the 2021 Theland NZ Open Keelboat National Championship hosted by the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron.

An early favourite is this year's Theland Race Team being driven by professional sailor and expert sailing analyst Chris Steele. Steele has a vast range of sailing experience to his name and has competed on the World Match Racing Tour, Extreme Sailing Series and the GC32 Racing Tour, among others.

Last year's runner-up Harry Thurston is jumping back on the plane from Christchurch to come and have another crack at winning the title. Thurston was impressive last year in what was a large fourteen team fleet, and is looking forward to taking on the best keelboat sailors in New Zealand this weekend with his newly minted Hotel Montreal Sailing Team.

It's not just about the boys, with two all-female teams led by Megan Thomson and Sally Garrett taking on the challenge. Thomson and Garrett both raced at the Barfoot & Thompson NZ Women's National Keelboat Championship just two weeks ago, finishing third and fifth respectively, so both are coming into the weekend with quality recent experience racing the MRX keelboats.

2019 champion Nick Egnot-Johnson will be looking to avenge last year's sixth place finish with a better result. Egnot-Johnson and his KNOTS Racing Team have earned themselves a tour card for this year's World Match Racing Tour, and although it's fleet racing this weekend, they will be happy to spend as much time on the water to build momentum before heading overseas.

Up to eight races are scheduled for the event, with a maximum of five per day. Racing will take place on Saturday and Sunday, with the first warning signal at 0955.

Mental Health Awareness Week 10-16 May 2021 - Helping Those for Whom Life Has Not All Been Plain Sailing.
Mental Health Awareness Week Simon Collyer, founder & CEO of the Association of Pension & Benefits CIC and founder of Sailing Wellness has teamed up with four times para-Olympic sailor Hannah Stodel, to sail RC (radio-controlled) model yachts in a Colchester swimming pool.

Sailing Wellness is a 'Blue Health' initiative designed to help military personnel suffering from PTSD, stress, anxiety, and depression. Also planned is the acquisition of resources to get the seriously disabled sailing in the International Hansa 303 Class, which is raced in the para-Olympics and Invicta Games.

Professional sailor Hannah Stodel was born without a forearm and with three kidneys and suffered from bullying in her school years. Despite this initial setback, Hannah competes in top ocean racing events as a professional sailor including the Fastnet race. Hannah's dream is to find the backing to be the first disabled person to take part in the rigorous Vendee Globe, a single-handed race non-stop around the Globe.

Sailing Wellness has attracted substantial funding recently from the Essex based Fowler, Smith and Jones Trust and much larger funding from the Veterans Foundation.

In the Sailing Wellness project, Simon has assembled a Steering Group of top mental health experts and sailors. Olympic Gold and Silver medallist and Rolex Yachtsman of the Year Saskia Clark is a patron.

The European Union finished a huge project in 2020 looking at the effects that water can have on wellbeing and mental health. It will come as no surprise to those who get on the water and 'mess about in boats' that there is a benefit to health and wellbeing.

35th Pineapple Cup-Montego Bay Race Set For January 2022
Montego Bay, Jamaica: The Montego Bay Yacht Club and Manuka Sports Event Management announced today that the 35th edition of the Pineapple Cup - Montego Bay Race, will start on January 22 and 23, 2022 from Miami. The 2022 edition of the Pineapple Cup will once again have two starts: the PHRF on Saturday, January 22nd and the ORC and Multihull fleets on Sunday, January 23rd. 2019 was the first year that multiple starts were implemented as a way to have the majority of the fleet finishing at the same time.

New for 2022 will be the way the most coveted trophy, the Silver Perpetual Pineapple Cup is awarded. Under the new rules, 1st overall corrected time will be awarded to the winner of the most competitive fleet. The most competitive fleet will be calculated by averaging the corrected time deltas of the first 80% of the fleet. The fleet with the lowest average deltas will be eligible to win the Pineapple Cup.

At 811 nautical miles, the Pineapple Cup is one of the oldest offshore yachting races and it also has one of the oldest yachting trophies. The trophy dates back to 1961 where it was handcrafted in London. Throughout the years, the trophy has been awarded to some of the most well known names in yachting including: John Kilroy, Ted Turner and Robert F Johnson. The winner of the 2019 Governor General's Trophy was awarded to the first place team in IRC, which was British entry Lady Mariposa onboard their Ker46.

The current course record was set in 2019 at 2 days, 0 hours, 7 minutes and 44 seconds by Argo a Mod70.

With reference to the letter from Philip Crebbin that was published yesterday in EuroSail News #4834, we have been advised that it may have been a bit confusing, because unfortunately the photo caption right at the start appeared as though it was the beginning of the main letter. His letter actually starts with the paragraph "It is an interesting idea…"

The letter was in support of Malcolm McKeag's proposal in #4830 that in the event that team racing was considered for the Olympics, it should be 2-boat team racing and not 3-boat team racing. This is not clear with the photo caption coming before the letter. The caption just comes from Philip's Facebook page. Philip did not actually expect the photo to be included because the letter was already maximum length and so he apologises that when he sent it in later, he therefore did not think to specify that it should only be added at the end of his letter and not at the start, if it did happen to be included by EuroSail News.

For clarity, Philip's letter is published here again without the photo and photo caption!

* From Philip Crebbin: re: Olympic Team Racing

It is an interesting idea to have Team racing as one of the disciplines in the Olympics. But I would particularly like to support Malcolm McKeag in proposing that it should then be 2-boat team racing. Based just on "last boat loses", it is then easy to follow and is much more exciting, both to watch and to participate in.

I remember fondly the years of the annual London Pirates 2-boat team racing competition, held in Enterprises at Wraysbury, which I won with various partners four times back in the 1970s, with Anthony Landamore as my crew.

The great thing about it is that you can absolve a foul on a leg by going round the next mark last, with no rights over the others at the mark. So there were rarely any protests - I think I remember one actual protest in all the five years that I sailed in the event.

Of course, for a more serious competition, you can now have umpires to decide who is at fault in an incident, and define which boat, if any, has to go round the next mark last. You then sometimes have the interesting aspect of two boats from opposite teams having to go round the next mark last for different incidents up that leg. Then these two boats maintain their rights against each other at the mark, but not against the other two boats, which have to be the first two boats round the mark.

I can still specifically picture one occasion that happened, when none of the four boats would go round a mark, because one boat of each team had accepted a penalty, and the other two boats were each trying to delay their rounding and help their team member with a penalty to be ahead of the other boat with a penalty round the mark. It got quite complicated and it was some time before any boats went round the mark!

It really is a great spectator sport, as well as a great participant sport, and a thousand times better than 3-boat team racing in my view!
