France and States consolidate leadership in Cascais
On the second day of the 2021 Cascais 49er & 49er Fx Championship races, the forty Olympic boats filled the bay of Cascais with colour to complete the three races planned for this day.

Once again, it was up to the ladies' fleet to start hostilities in Cascais Bay. This time the race committee setted the course inside the Cascais bay where competitors could find wind conditions between 10 and 17 knots in intensity but with some shits in the direction.

The podium on the second day is different from the opening day where only yesterday's leaders, the French mixed team Lili Sebesi and Yann Jauvin remain. Moving up to second place is also the French mixed team Kevin Fischer and Dubois Albane. Closing the podium is the Danish team, bronze medalist in the 2019 world championship, composed by Ida Nielsen and Marie Olsen.

With the wind increasing in intensity during the afternoon, it was the turn of the men's Olympic fleet. the American duo composed by Ian Barrows and Hans Henken remained in the lead. The Carioca duo made up of Marco Grael and Gabriel Borges rose to second place in the overall standings, being two points behind the leadership. At the bottom of the podium is the American duo composed of Nevin Snow and Dane Wilson.

In total, in the two races, 4 continents are represented - America, Europe, Asia and Oceania - in a total of 19 nationalities will sail in the bay of Cascais.

Designed for the job - Dimension Polyant
Dimension Polyant As well as great sailing performance a new generation of sailcloths is exploiting the potential for very much improved levels of durability

With the rise in popularity of longrange blue water cruising, the world's leading sailcloth manufacturer Dimension-Polyant is experiencing greater demand than ever for its timeproven and distance-defying products.

DYS, a rugged Dyneema laminate, remains the most popular cloth for blue water cruisers who are also keen on maximising performance on the occasional race track. DYS is the cloth of choice on many of the yachts in the Oyster World Rally, for example.

For the ultimate in low stretch and durability, GXLD's GraphX Carbon Dyneema Spectra laminate structure makes it the strongest and most durable product in the Dimension- Polyant range.

The Bol d'Or Mirabaud 2021 is Confirmed
It's official: the Bol d'Or Mirabaud, the world's primary lake regatta, will take place as initially planned on June 12-13, 2021, without limitations as to the number of participants, but with strict health measures designed to protect all participants from COVID-19.

Among measures in place, soon to be published in detail on the http://www.boldormirabaud.ch website:

- No festivities on land
- French territory is excluded from the racecourse
- The race will close an hour later to account for the lengthened racecourse
- Discounted early registration pricing is extended for the entire registration period, through June 6, 2021

The Societe Nautique de Genève won't be open to the public this year and all measures will be taken to avoid public gathering. Therefore, there won't be an opening ceremony or welcome cocktail and race material distribution will take place over three days with pickup times assigned in advance. The same applies to launching boats. The clubhouse, locker rooms and showers won't be accessible to competitors. The weather briefing will be provided online.

The prize ceremony will take place outdoors in an enclosed setting, with only one representative per winning crew. It will be retransmitted online.

Finnish sailing yacht, Fuga collaborates with Estonian CleanTech start-up PowerUP Energy Technologies
Tallinn, Estonia: Finnish sailing yacht Fuga has kicked off a sailing expedition around the Baltic Sea which will continue throughout summer this year. Estonian cleantech start-up PowerUP Energy Technologies came forward to support this expedition by offering their UP400 portable hydrogen generator to support the backup power needs of Fuga.

The idea for the project arose when friends Pellervo Kunnaala, working in the financial sector and Mikko Puolitaival who is the Head of Risk Management at the Rescue Department, wanted to combine fun and benefit. However, the goal of the expedition is not to discover new continents, but to explore and become acquainted with new technology, the region's foreign ports, and, of course, the common Baltic Sea. This one-of-a-kind exploratory trip is allowing anyone to witness the sailing journey from the comfort of their couches at home as the crew will be streaming live with the internet, which would be powered by Solar panels along with PowerUP's generator when required.

In addition to PowerUP, the Finnish Meteorological Institute is also part of the project, which has built the measuring equipment for the boat. In return, s / y Fuga is acting like a mobile weather station that will automatically send data to the Finnish Meteorological Institute. Apart from testing new technology, the Fuga crew will tour the ports as ambassadors for the CB Small Ports project where they would be interacting with the port representatives.

The whole trip takes about two months and is carried out in two parts. The first phase that started yesterday from Rauma, Finland, is aimed at exploring the southern Baltic Sea. The second phase will start in mid-July with the Tall Ship Race, and then sailing up the west coast of Finland and along the Swedish coast back to the home port of Rauma in August. All uncertainties have been considered and measured in advance to ensure a smooth journey on the sea.

Tom Dolan Prepares For The Transat En Double Concarneau - Saint-Barthelemy with French Ace Gildas Mahe
Next weekend Irish racer Tom Dolan will line up at the start of the 3,890 nautical miles Transat En Double Concarneau - Saint-Barthelemy harbouring realistic hopes of finishing on the podium, possibly even winning the two-handed race across the Atlantic which has attracted 21 starters. Dolan sails the Atlantic representing sponsors Smurfit Kappa and Kingspan partnering his very experienced French co-skipper Gildas Mahe which has twice finished on the podium on this race.

A long time friend and the training partner with whom he put in many hours on the water last Autumn and early Winter, Dolan and Mahe prepped and tuned in search of the small speed gains which the duo hope will make a key difference on this year's two pinnacle events, this imminent Transat en Double and September's La Solitaire du Figaro.

The race is in effect the 15th edition of an event previously known as the AG2R Transat and follows a course from Brittany to Saint Barthelemy in the Caribbean. Cancelled last year because of the pandemic this will be the first Transatlantic race for the new Figaro Beneteau 3. Mahe has two podium finishes to his credit, second in 2016 with Nicolas Lunven and third in 2018 with Nico Troussel and he was runner-up on the 2019 La Solitaire du Figaro.

Sir Kenneth Preston Trophy
The 2021 Sir Kenneth Preston Trophy for the Etchells class was run by the Royal Yacht Squadron over the Early May Bank Holiday weekend 1st-3rd May.

A strong entry of 18 boats were met with light and changeable winds on the first day of the event, with the race committee making every attempt possible to get a race in, but with no luck.

After a 2-hour postponement on shore on the second day, boats were again towed to the race area but this time the breeze was stronger and more steady, allowing the race committee to get four great races in. In the first race of the day, in a building southerly breeze of 8-10 knots, a huge 30-degree wind shift shuffled the pack up the second beat, allowing James Howells' Gelert to take the win.

The second race of the day was won by Ante Razmilovic on Swedish Blue, with the breeze now up to 12-15 knots from the SW.

The race committee decided to send the fleet out early on the third and final day of the regatta with a first start at 9:30 am in order to get some races in before a storm blew through, bringing up to 40 knots of wind later in the day. Stuart Childerley on Polaris showed his speed in the strong winds to win race 5 by over a minute, whilst sadly the overnight leader Gelert suffered gear failure meaning that they had to retire from all of the day's racing. In the final race, Eat, Sleep, E, Repeat was the winner, with the wind now over 20 knots with gusts in the high 20's, the race committee shortened the course at the second windward mark as the breeze continued to build. Some boats were by now sitting noticeably lower in the water due to bilge pump failure!

The final result was that Paul Ward's Eat, Sleep, E, Repeat with crew Charlie Cumbley and Paul Ward won the Sir Kenneth Preston Trophy, first Corinthian team was Ante Razmilovic's Swedish Blue with Brian Hammersley and Andrew Mills and first Youth team was Jake Hardman, Tiger Tellwright, Alex Smerdon and Hattie Askew on Pulse. -- Jake Hardman

Airlie Beach Race Week A trio of past Sydney Hobart winners in Geoff Boettcher, Darryl Hodgkinson and Phil Turner, along with yachting champion Marcus Blackmore, are among the heavy hitters heading north to race in the IRC Passage Division at the 33rd running of Airlie Beach Race Week, to be held from 12-19 August, 2021.

Boettcher has updated his boat a couple of times since winning the 2010 Rolex Sydney Hobart and will arrive with his latest TP52, which in keeping with the theme of his former yachts, is named Secret Mens Business (SMB).

The South Australian purchased the 2017-built TP52 formerly known as Rio, in January, and finished third under IRC to Ichi Ban and Hooligan in the Adelaide to Port Lincoln race after claiming top place in Adelaide's Premier Cup.

Darryl Hodgkinson is also racing a different yacht to that which won him the 2013 Sydney Hobart. The newest Victoire, a Carkeek 40, also has its share of runs on the board from various events.

Phil Turner's Alive (Tasmania) won the Sydney Hobart in 2018 and is returning with usual skipper, Duncan Hine, at the helm. The Reichel/Pugh 66 will be joined by Marcus Blackmore with his new luxurious superyacht, Ammonite, which will make her major regatta debut at Airlie Beach.

The four yachts will be joined by other well-known yachts currently entered in the IRC Passage division: Carrera S (Gerry Cantwell) and Ponyo (David Currie) from Victoria, along with Sail Exchange (Carl Crafoord) from NSW.

Whitsunday Sailing Club (WSC) is expecting a sizeable fleet as it celebrates 50 years operation, which began on the point in Pioneer Bay on April 2, 1971. Entries to-date across all divisions have been received from Queensland, NSW, South Australia, Tasmania and Victoria. -- Di Pearson/ABRW media
