France and the United States lead the first day in Cascais
On the first day of the 2021 Cascais 49er & 49er Fx Championship, the Olympic fleet composed of 28 boats, of the 49erFx class, plus 10 boats, of the 49er class, fulfilled the day's schedule when holding the three scheduled races for each class.

The ladies' fleet, which started the day, found the Guia race course in the morning, with the classic conditions of that local with wind in the northwest quadrant with 15 knots of intensity. The French team of Lili Sebesi and Yann Jauvin closed the opening day at podium top position with a bullet in the second race of the day. The runner ups, two points behind the leadership, are the world champions in title, the Spanish Tamara Echegoyen and Paula Barceló. Closing the podium are the gold medalists at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, Martine Grael and Kahena Kunze from Brazil.

In the 49er men's Olympic class, they started racing around 3:00 pm after the organization was forced to change its position on the race course due to strong winds. The American team composed of Ian Barrows and Hans Henken leads the championship after two bullets in the last two races of the day. In second place are the leaders; compatriots Nevin Snow and Dane Wilson. In the third position of the podium are the French Robert Solune and Sipan Valentin

In total, in the two races, 4 continents are represented - America, Europe, Asia and Oceania - in a total of 19 nationalities will sail in the bay of Cascais.

This championship has the support of Turismo de Portugal, Visit Cascais, Cascais Town Hall, Cascais Marina and Vista Alegre.

Finn Gold Cup in Porto
The 65th Finn Gold Cup opens in Porto, Portugal, this week with around 60 sailors from 33 nations taking part. It is the first time that the whole fleet will race together since the 2019 Finn Gold Cup in Melbourne, Australia.

The event also offers the final opportunities for nations to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics, with one European place and one African place on offer.

The fleet includes four previous world champions, including the defender Josh Junior, from New Zealand, who hasn't raced a major Finn event since victory in 2019. However he has of course, along with Andy Maloney who is also in Porto, won the America's Cup in the meantime.

The 65th Finn Gold Cup comes at a strange time in the history of this outstanding class, both because of Covid restrictions and the uncertainty over its inclusion at Paris 2024. In 1956 the Finn Gold Cup was introduced to bring the best sailors in the world together for a week of racing. It is still doing that and there is little doubt next week's battle on the ocean off Porto should be epic.

Registration and measurement run from Wednesday 5 to Friday 7 May, followed by a 10 race series from 8-12 May.

Introducing: A Bunch of New Gizmos from Harken
Gizmos from Harken That's right, Gizmos. A new line of soft-attach and through-deck pieces that live in the rigging space between blocks and heavy deck terminations. The first of these are through-deck bushings and water-tight padeye kits. Gizmos respond to the riggers' desire to minimize weight and eliminate as much heavy metal as possible.

New single-sided through-deck bushing Gizmos chafeproof decks and lines when used in through-deck applications. Double-sided through-deck bushings are also available and are perfect for leading soft-attach loops, keeping lines separate and preventing wear.

Our padeye kits include a cross pin, waterproof cap, and O-ring to convert a double-sided bushing into a through-deck, watertight padeye. The cross pin attaches the rope/loop, and the cap snaps over the top to keep water out. The bushing and loop are sold separately.

Harken's reputation for precise manufacturing assures all these Gizmos will be precision-sized and fit together perfectly when assembled. And Harken distribution makes sure Gizmos are available in the quantities you need - when you need them. The bushings and padeye kits are just the beginning. We predict there will be a lot more Gizmos showing up as customers ask for them.

Burnham-on-Crouch, UK: Burnham Week Ltd (BWL) is delighted to announce Burnham Week 2021 is now open for entry.

This premier east coast regatta (28 August-4 September) at Burnham-on-Crouch traditionally takes place to include the August Bank Holiday, which means now is the time to plan that all-important nautical staycation.

For a three-day short-break, the Bank Holiday weekend racing is hugely popular with not only the Multihull Offshore Cruising & Racing Association (MOCRA ) but also dinghy fleets, which offer a series of weekend races for Ospreys and mixed handicap classes, or any class that can muster a fleet of seven.

The final Saturday is Trophy Day and, for IRC classes, includes a chance to win the prestigious Town Cup, which is being run alongside the Houghton Cup (one of the oldest offshore races on the East Coast) in conjunction with EAORA (East Anglian Offshore Racing Association).

As well as the competitive nature of this iconic family regatta, Burnham Week's fun social reputation is legendary. As usual there are events lined up at all three clubs (Royal Corinthian YC, Royal Burnham YC, Burnham SC) throughout the week. One of the biggest events of the Week is Quay Day, a fun-packed day for everyone on Bank Holiday Monday (30 August).

Blaze destroys historic boathouses and vessels on UK's River Thames
An intense fire has destroyed two Grade-II listed boatyards and vessels on a Thames island in south-west London in the UK.

Fifteen fire engines and around 100 firefighters were called to the inferno that broke out at Platt's Eyot in Hampton on Monday evening.

Naval historian Dr Phil Weir told The Evening Standard: "This is an incalculable loss of maritime and naval heritage. The yard was where the Royal Navy's motor torpedo boats were created in the First World War and I gather at least one of the Dunkirk Little Ships was under restoration there and has been lost."

A London Fire Brigade spokesman said: "Firefighters tackled a fire at two single-storey industrial units on the island, which were completely destroyed by the fire. The only access on to the island was via a footbridge, therefore firefighters have carried all of their equipment to the scene by hand."

The listed buildings are thought to have been constructed around the year 1916 for John Thornycroft's Hampton Launch Works which operated on the island from around 1904 until the mid 1960s. What is thought to be the oldest boat building company on the island was established by Thomas Tagg in 1868. Neil Eaves

Lord Montagu and the Hon. Mary Montagu-Scott on board Gipsy Moth IV. Click on image to enlarge.

Lord Montagu Lord Montagu has reopened Buckler's Hard Yacht Harbour following the completion of its major £2m redevelopment, 50 years after the marina was first built as a haven for boats on the Beaulieu River.

Faces from past and present came together to celebrate the milestone achievement in a special Covid-safe ceremony on board Gipsy Moth IV, the yacht that Sir Francis Chichester famously sailed around the globe. Lord Montagu and his sister The Hon. Mary Montagu-Scott were joined by Harbour Master Wendy Stowe and former Harbour Master Bill Grindey to mark the occasion and welcome sailors back to the marina.

Half a century after it was opened in 1971, Buckler's Hard Yacht Harbour is now ready for the next chapter of its history. The expanded marina boasts 66 new berths, an increased provision of walk-ashore pontoons and improved facilities, keeping pace with modern demands while maintaining the natural charm which makes it one of the most desired locations on the south coast.

Gipsy Moth IV looked right at home on one of the new pontoons as she proudly flew a special burgee to mark the golden anniversary. One of the Beaulieu River's most famous boat residents, the yacht was originally moored on the Beaulieu River before its epic journey around the globe, when Bill Grindey was Harbour Master.

Buckler's Hard Yacht Harbour has a long track record of outstanding customer service and offers full marina services, an open policy boatyard and chandlery, along with a range of benefits. The pleasures of the New Forest are on the doorstep, while the beauty spot of Buckler's Hard village is just a stroll away, with its restaurant, tea shop and Maritime Museum.

Royal Western Yacht Club announce B&G as Technical Partners for 2021

The Royal Western Yacht Club is very pleased to announce B&G as its Technical partner for the key offshore races in 2021, namely the Plymouth Lonely Rock Race (PLR) and the Wolf Rock race.

As expected, there are several B&G equipped boats entering the PLR, not least Nigel Passmore, a local owner on his Dazcat 1495, 'Apollo'. You will be able to follow 'Apollo' who will be providing social media commentary as they progress around the course.

The 508-mile course, 100 miles shorter than the original Fastnet racecourse, will also be the highest-ranking points race for the new, Southwest offshore Group Series (SOGS). Classes will be offered for non-rated, IRC & MOCRA. Cruiser and one design classes can be accepted subject to numbers. Options on crew numbers are solo, double handed, 4-crew (the RWYC's new concept) as well as full crew.

A 200-mile passage is required to qualify for the PLR. However, should it be convenient then the RWYC Wolf Rock Race, which starts from Plymouth on Friday 21st May, will be accepted as a qualifier. Wolf rock, around 4nm southwest of Lands' End, is a perfect turn point for this PLR qualifier and a great way to gain insight to the longer race in July.

Polish catamaran builder Sunreef Yachts has released the first pictures of the company's in-house developed solar power system. Using ultra thin, shock-resistant and highly efficient solar cells, it is said to be the industry's first composite-integrated photovoltaic technology.

Sunreef's solar power system is currently being integrated on both power and sail catamarans within the company's Eco range of luxury catamarans. The panels are entirely flush with all curved composite structures including masts, hull sides and biminis.

Weighing less than 1.8kg per square meter, the system claims to be the lightest marine photovoltaic solution and uses cells delivering a peak performance of 24%. In addition, the integration technique gives the panels an extremely high resistance to shock and abrasion.

The Sunreef Power Eco 60 was the yard's first model to feature Sunreef's new state-of-the-art solar power system when it launched in November last year.

* From Malcolm McKeag:

What a great idea from Tom Hayhoe. Team racing in the Olympics. Other than radio-control it requires the smallest race course in the sport, has more corners (hence more action) and requires the least expensive equipment. Why has no one thought of this before?

Just one more thing: make it two-boat, not three-boat, team racing. Why? In two-boat team racing 'last boat loses'. Anyone can understand that.
