Dutch treat at RS:X World Championships
Netherlands swept the 2021 RS:X World Championships as Kiran Badloe and Lilian De Geus took the titles during the five day event on April 23-27 in Cadiz, Spain. With 42 male and 28 female competitors, day one brought gusts of 44+ knots that ultimately cancelled racing but the rest of the event carried on amid upper end conditions. The top North American were Pedro Pascual Suitt (USA) in 23rd and Farrah Hall (USA) in 17th.

Global Solo Challenge - two possible new groups including Open 50s
As the list of enquiries received about the Global Solo Challenge 2023 tops 220 sailors (of which more than 150 already own a boat) organisers need to ensure the event remains fair, even in light of a potentially diverse fleet at the start.

17 skipper have already confirmed their entries. At the lower and slower end of the scale, we have now received 10 enquiries from 32 footers, the minimum length allowed by the Notice of Event.

At the upper end of the scale, 4 Open 50s of the former IMOCA 50 Class have made provisional enquiries. These boats are within the maximum allowed length by the Event of 55ft, however, their expected performance and circumnavigation time is out of the scale currently envisaged by the entry criteria.

The Global Solo Challenge, with its unique format of staggered starts, is set to be a sailing re-enactment of the tale of the tortoise and the hare. Slow boats depart first chased by the faster boats which set off later. Once at sea there are no classes and the first boat home wins.

The expected circumnavigation time for each boat determines the departure group. This requires complex simulations and comparisons with available reference times to keep the event fair.

There are only a handful of events that today accept an Open 50 as an entry. Examples are the Rhum Class of the Route du Rhum or the OSTAR. There aren't any around the world events open to these boats.

It is in keep with the spirit of the Global Solo Challenge to offer a departure for these boats, even more so if there are no other similar events they can attend.

Several simulations confirm that an up to date Open 50, with canting keel, weather routeing and modern sails allowed, should expect to complete the circumnavigation in about 115-120 days from La Coruña.

To keep the event fair these boats should set off approximately 3 weeks after an average first/second generation Class40 such as that sailed by Guo Chuan in 2013 (Akilaria RC2) when setting a reference time of 137 for a solo non stop circumnavigation on a 40ft boat. The course from La Coruña is slightly longer than that sailed by Guo Chuan and would therefore add a few days to the expected circumnavigation time for a similar boat.

The Merry Month of May
RORC Two-Handed Offshore Race and Spring Series Race 3

After a year and a half of disruptions to offshore racing due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Royal Ocean Racing Club is delighted to confirm an overnight race for Two-Handed teams starting on May 1st.

The combined entry list for May 1st has a fleet of 48 yachts, including all the top Two-Handed boats from the inshore RORC Spring Series. The three-race series came to a dramatic conclusion on April 17th. James Harayda racing Sun Fast 3300 Gentoo with Dee Caffari, was just one second ahead of Kelvin Rawlings, racing Sun Fast 3300 Aries with Stuart Childerley. The result in the last race gave Gentoo victory in the series by a single point from Aries. Rob Craigie's Sun Fast 3600 Bellino racing with Deb Fish was third.

For crewed entries, the RORC Spring Series will come to a conclusion this weekend. Two teams are tied for first place going into the deciding race. Ed Bell's JPK 1180 Dawn Treader and RORC Commodore James Neville, racing HH42 Ino XXX, have equal points. Michael O'Donnell's J/121 Darkwood is just two points behind the leaders, whilst Rob Bottomley's MAT 12 Sailplane 3 is five points off pole-position.

The RORC fleet are scheduled to start racing from the Squadron Line Cowes from 10:00 BST on Saturday 1st May. For online entry and more information: www.rorc.org

Cowes to Stage Uffa Fox 2022 Regatta

Uffa Fox To mark the 50th anniversary of the death of Uffa Fox, one of the most highly regarded naval architects and enthusiast of all aspects of sailing, the Royal London Yacht Club, together with the Cowes Classic Boat Museum, and supported by the Atalanta Owners Association and the Cowes Corinthian Yacht Club, are holding a series of exciting events in Cowes from 18th-21st August 2022.

To celebrate the life of a man so ahead of his time, a regatta will be held for all the Uffa crafts – a once in a lifetime opportunity for owners of Uffa designed boats.

The Classic Boat Museum will be organising a series of events including seminars and an exhibition of Uffa's various dinghies.

The Uffa Fox celebrations will be followed by the Flying Fifteen European championships organised by the Cowes Corinthian Yacht Club from the 20th to 26th August 2022.

It is appropriate that the Royal London Yacht Club should be chosen to organise the sailing as Uffa was a stalwart of the RLYC and, as Chairman of the Sailing Committee, was instrumental in the resurgence of sailing after the Second World War.

Racing will be for 100% Uffa Fox designed dinghies, keelboats and classic boats, with some classes' racing areas along the shore to attract spectators.

Along with various off-the-water tours and activities, evening social events have also been planned for participants, their families and Uffa enthusiasts.

Never knowingly overtaken - Outremer
Outremer 55 The new VPLP-designed Outremer 55 is not going to be an easy boat to stay in front of

A brand new model from Outremer is a major event in the multihull world due to the French ocean cruising cat brand's well-earned reputation for all-round excellence. And it's been a very long time since the last one. An elongated, performance-optimised version of the stalwart Outremer 45 was launched five years ago as the 4X, and promptly won a clutch of awards, but the Outremer 55 is the first totally new boat added to the range in almost 10 years. Hull number one was launched and seatrialed in the Mediterranean shortly before Christmas and first impressions quite strongly suggest that once again, they've nailed it.

Online Exhibition Reveals Unique Currach Building Video & Archive
The currach, with its primitive design of wooden frame and waterproof skin, is the best known of all the Irish boats. By the mid-twentieth century this once common boat was noticeably disappearing from our shores, and rarer still were the currach builders who held a knowledge passed down from generation to generation. In 1968, the National Museum of Ireland recognised the threat to the traditional currach and given the Museum's role in preserving heritage objects for the benefit of the Irish people, began the process of having one commissioned for the national collection.

When asked by the then Director of the National Museum of Ireland, Dr AT Lucas, the renowned Irish folklorist Ciaráin Bairéad identified Michael Conneely for the job - a carpenter and farmer who learned the craft from his own father, who was mostly self-taught. Michael Conneely was best known locally as Mikey, but he was also known as Mac Johnny Tom Andie (son of Johnny Tom Andie), Mikey an t-siúinéira (Mikey of the carpenter, as his father was a carpenter) and he signed his name Michael Conneely (John). He made currachs for people on the other two Aran Islands as well as the mainland and had the craft well-honed.

The finished 19 and a half feet, three-man currach complete with mast and sail, over two hundred photographs and video footage documenting the build, along with details logged in the NMI team's notes and correspondence, have left us with a significant and complete record of the vanishing skill of traditional Irish currach building.

The unique footage, following Michael Conneely carefully and craftfully through the step-by-step building process, is now available to view on the National Museum of Ireland's website for the first time in an online exhibition called Making a currach - Michael Conneely.

President's Cup
Upcoming sailors from the British Keelboat Academy were able to put their lockdown learning into practise on the water competing in the President's Cup at Queen Mary SC.

The inter-club one day fleet racing event is run by the Royal Thames YC for teams under the age of 37 and this is the second year that the British Keelboat Academy has taken part.

Having been unable to get afloat over winter, the event in J/80-s on Saturday 17th April 2021 provided an ideal opportunity for some of the BKA's sailors to kick start their season, with coaching support from professional sailor Mary Rook.

With a shifty medium light breeze on Queen Mary Reservoir, claiming first overall was the Royal Thames YC team of Scott Wallis, Emma Baker, Matthew Wallis and Tarra Gill-Taylor, counting an impressive four bullets and a second from the six-race series.

Industry News
Dimension-Polyant Three years ago, the sailcloth manufacturer Dimension-Polyant, founded in 1966 on the Lower Rhine, began to renew its external image, initially focusing on its roots in sailing. The associated advertising campaign emphasised the company's innovation and market leadership in sailcloth. DP is taking its 55th birthday as an occasion to introduce a new logo and set its sights on new markets. In the future, the company will also fly the flag outside of sailing, in the field of technical textiles. Graduate engineer and managing director Uwe Stein explains: "A sailcloth is a highly complex technical fabric that can also be used for applications outside sailing. Our many years of research and the development of the best and most durable sailcloth have led to the fact that on the one hand we can respond very individually to customer needs and develop almost customised solutions with the customers. On the other hand, we can offer our high-tech sailcloth for use in other industries, such as the outdoor industry or even the healthcare." In order to grow in these markets, a new corporate logo and brand architecture will be introduced on 30 April 2021.

The new corporate logo was designed by the "nesseins design studio" in cooperation with "Hoeppner Sport- und Markenkommunikation". It shows the complexity of the products and only refers in a very abstract way to the origin in sailing. The distinctive corporate colours blue and green are retained and stand for the two corporate divisions "Sailing" and "Technical" as well as for clean products and responsibility towards the environment. On the website there is an superodinate division, which is divided into Sailing and Technical on the second level. "This division reflects our new self-image as a provider of innovative solutions," Stein summarises.

With the easing of lockdown on 12th April, the RYA Training Centre at Hamble River Sailing Club was able to offer RYA courses for children over the Easter holiday period. To be covid compliant, groups of six were the order of the day and all theory had to be undertaken outside as well as the practical work afloat. Colour coded bibs and helmets helped to keep the Level 1 & 2 students in the right place at the right time.

Chief Instructor Harry Ives and his team of Instructors had good experience of running courses with these numbers and restrictions from last summer's successful programme. Harry has been with the Training Centre for seven years now, as a DI and an SI. After two years as second in command he stepped up to CI this spring, making the transition as seamless as possible.

The Centre, now in its 16th year, runs a range of RYA courses. This Easter saw 20 students on Stage 1&2 courses. Another 10 took Stage 3 and there were 6 on the Spinnaker Course and 15 on an Improvers Course. Courses for the May holiday, 31st May to 4th June, are already selling out. RYA Stage 1&2 and RYA Stage 4 are completely full. There are some spaces left on the RYA Stage 3 and the Improver Course so anyone wishing to join in should go now to: hrsc.org.uk/booking/type/rya-training
