2021 ‘Gotas De Oro’ Rs:X Windsurfing World Championships
Team GB windsurfers Tom Squires and Emma Wilson are relishing a forecast for big breeze as they take on the RS:X World Championships - one of the last major events before Tokyo 2020.

Squires is known for excelling in strong winds, and that’s just what the 46 male and 30 female athletes have in store over the course of the five-day regatta.

The current forecast in Cadiz, Spain, suggests winds could hit more than 30 knots at times as the best of the best battle it out to go into the Olympics as world champions

Wilson, 22, narrowly missed out on a podium spot at the European Championships last month, coming home fifth.

With Tokyo 2020 less than three months away, she is planning on making the most of the opportunity to face her international rivals one last time before heading to Japan.

Racing starts on Friday April 23 and will conclude on Tuesday April 27

New IMOCA rules for 2021-25
Antoine Mermod: “an evolution and not a revolution"

Coordinated by the IMOCA Class (International Monohull Open Class Association), the Technical Committee which currently represents fifteen teams, has been putting forward, studying and debating the Class Rules 2021-25, all of which gained approval on 15 April 2021.

The broad outlines of this work had already been voted on in late August, but inevitably some of the answers would only be revealed during the Vendee Globe. The main challenge for the engineers was knowing how to react in real time to race events, whilst maintaining a set course prior to the start, a fact that was especially true for the skippers. Nearly 100 hours of (virtual) meetings culminated in a final draft, which was voted on at the Annual General Meeting.

#1 Geared towards more sustainable performance
#2 Limitation on foils
#3 Increased safety
#4 Boats with enhanced performance
#5 Cost control

The IMOCAs will soon be back out on the water with the start on 29 May of the inaugural running of The Ocean Race Europe setting sail from Lorient. For the first time, the teams will be racing in mixed crews in this ‘Ocean Race’ format and one of the members of each crew will be in charge of media production. The IMOCAs will also be hooking back up with the VO65 fleet for an intense race between Brittany in France, Cascais in Portugal, Alicante in Spain and Genoa in Italy.

Hugely desirable (and completely outrageous) - Baltic Yachts
Baltic Yachts When a world famous premier long-established yard like Baltic Yachts makes a serious decision to go ‘street racing’ the result is never going to be anything less than outstanding

The Baltic 68 Cafe Racer, named for the stripped-down street racing motorbikes of 1960s London’s rockers, is an ambitious vision of the probable future direction of composite sailing yachts.

More than half the hull structure is made of natural flax and it’s decked with FSC-certified cork. The electric powerplant uses hydrogeneration and solar while away from the dock. The air conditioning can be run in eco mode by solar power alone and the bilge pump filters oil and microplastics. Her eco credentials are well established but what of the street racer pedigree?

Estonian Lauri Andressel Enters GSC On Biggest Boat Yet
Lauri Andressel from Tallin in Estonia is the 17th entry in the Global Solo Challenge. With his Bruce Farr designed Beneteau 53 F5 is also the skipper of the biggest boat entered so far. Tallin is a hanseatic city on the Baltic Sea and Lauri feels in his element when sailing, “maybe it is somewhat in my genes... It gives me a feeling of freedom that I have not found anywhere else in my life.”

Where does your passion for sailing come from?
I was born in Tallinn, in the medieval Hanseatic city by the Baltic Sea. Maybe it’s somehow in my genes.

What lessons have you learnt from sailing?
Understanding of the force and power of nature; and the relationship between an action and its consequence. Of course there is much more, and many lessons are still to come.

What brought you to like single-handed sailing?
I get the vitality from nature, especially from being at sea under sails and being alone. It gives me a feeling of freedom that I have not found anywhere else in my life.

What prompted you to sign up for this event?
GSC is an attractive and safe way to realise my old dream.

How do you plan to prepare for this event?
I prepared the boat for the OSTAR ride which is technically demanding, so it should be mainly ready. Of course I will comply to the GSC requirements in addition to that. It is also important to be physically fit yourself, so I am training as well.

Formidable Line-Up For The First TF35 Trophy
French sailing legend, Loïck Peyron, joins the line-up of top sailing stars to compete in the first-ever event of the inaugural TF35 Trophy next week.

The Frenchman, who has a glittering sailing career in multihulls and monohulls and set a Trophee Jules Verne record, will join the TF35 Trophy as tactician for the newest crew to join the fleet Team SAILFEVER.

Having no prior experience of sailing, Team SAILFEVER owner French entrepreneur Frederic Jousset, took on the challenge after receiving an email from a potential TF35 team looking for an investor as he was climbing Mt Everest in the spring of 2019. "What immediately appealed to me about racing on the TF35 was not only the feeling we were about to experience but also the technological challenge we would face," Jousset explains.

For their first season, the team's focus is on progress. Peyron will guide the new owner Jousset through his first year of professional racing with the help of a top crew featuring former Groupama Team France sailors Devan le Bihan, Arnaud Jarlegan and local talent Yvan Ravussin.

It has been an unprecedented build-up to the first event of the TF35 Trophy, with restrictions and difficulties caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. A change in venue from Societe Nautique de Geneve to Societe Nautique de Nyon in early April has been an unfortunate but necessary step to ensure the launch of the series.

Sail GP Gets Underway in Bermuda
An explosive opening event to SailGP Season 2 got underway in Bermuda. Matt Sheahan reviews two days of high ocatane action. With global rockstars such as Peter Burling, Jimmy Spithill and Sir Ben Ainslie joining SailGP we thought we knew who would be at the front of the fleet, but we were wrong. After the first race, the form guide was in tatters. And then the action really started.

Semaine Olympique Francaise Toulon Provence Mediterranee 2021 will be virtual
From April 26 to May 2, the Semaine Olympique Francaise Toulon Provence Mediterranee 2021 will be virtual. As in 2020, the organising committee will be hosting a virtual Semaine Olympique Francaise on the Virtual Regatta Inshore game platform. The great novelty of this new virtual edition is that the players will be navigating a completely new body of water - the bay of Hyères in the Toulon Provence Mediterranee area.

A new body of water
For the first time on Virtual Regatta Inshore, competitors will explore and race in the bay of Hyères, considered by some to be the “most beautiful body of water in the world”. It is the fourth body of water in France to be modelled on Virtual Regatta Inshore, and the virtual Semaine Olympique Francaise Toulon Provence Mediterranee will allow competitors to take the start line and race on this exceptional body of water. They will get a taste of what makes “La SOF” such a hit with Olympic sailors all over the whole world.

A competition from April 26 to May 2
In Laser, 49er and Nacra17, competitors in the virtual Semaine Olympique Francaise Toulon Provence Mediterranee will compete against each other on different Olympic class boats throughout the week.

Programme:
Monday April 26 and Tuesday April 27: Laser training
Wednesday April 28 and Thursday April 29: Qualification 1 in 49er (blue event in the e-sailing world championship): the top 10 will qualify for the final
Friday April 30 and Saturday May 1: Qualification 2 in Nacra17 (blue event of the e-sailing world championship): the "other" top 10 will also qualify for the final
Sunday May 2 at 21:00: Final at 20:00
The winner and winners of qualification 1 and 2 will qualify directly for the play-offs of the 2021 e-sailing world championship.

There is more information on the programme at sof.ffvoile.fr

Offshore Team Germany Gets Benjamin Dutreux for The Ocean Race Europe
Grown up on the Île d'Yeu in the Atlantic off the French coast, a passionate sailor and materials technician in the yacht building industry (CEO at Eole Performance shipyard), a committed campaigner for marine conservation: Benjamin Dutreux is what you might call a maritime enthusiast.

He now wants to take the next step in his sailing career with Offshore Team Germany, joins skipper Robert Stanjek's crew and completes the team for The Ocean Race Europe. The 31-year-old has been sailing since he was eleven years old, competing in his first regattas as a 13 year old boy. Initially, the focus was on multihulls and participating in championships on the 16- and 18-feet catamarans. In his student days, Benjamin Dutreux switched to the J/80s and into match racing. In 2015, he took the next step and competed in the French stage race Solitaire du Figaro and became best rookie. In 2018, he sailed to fifth place in this event. Thus, the dream of an even greater adventure is developing.

Dutreux will complement the team with Robert Stanjek, Phillip Kasüske and Annie Lush perfectly. With Benjamin, OTG also brings a French aspect into the campaign. This is hugely important for the project as the Imoca class is particularly strong in France. The team can build a base for the preparations in Les Sables D'olonne, the home town of Dutreux, which is a big plus for The Ocean Race Europe with its start in Lorient, but also for the future.

Tiedemann Regatta will kick off the CYOA Challenge Series in 2021
The New York Yacht Club has announced dates for this year’s Robert H. Tiedemann Classics Regatta, to be held in Newport on June 26th and 27th. For the first time in its history, this biennial regatta - which had traditionally been held in July - will be the first event in the 2021 Classic Yacht Owners Association’s Challenge Series.

The CYOA Challenge Series includes a number of regattas throughout the northeast, from Rhode Island to Maine to Massachusetts to Long Island Sound. As with these other events, the Tiedemann Classics Regatta will have divisions for Vintage, Classic, Modern Classic, and Spirit of Tradition boats. One-design divisions may also be offered.

The Tiedemann Classics Regatta honors the legacy of Robert Tiedemann, remembered for his historic contribution to the preservation of classic yachting and promotion of the 12-meter class. Tiedemann, who passed away in 2006, was known for helping establish Newport as a center for the class’s racing activities. He also famously restored two classic 12-meters: Gleam and Northern Light.
