Sardinha Cup
International duo Pep Costa of Spain and England's Will Harris finished fifth in the Sardinha Cup's brutally cold 775 nautical miles offshore race for the Figaro Beneteau 3 class to take eighth overall in the 21 strong fleet, an excellent result on their first event sailed as a duo racing Costa's Cybele Vacances-Team Play to B

After the last Sunday night's start the duo stuck to their own game plan which saw them staying north of the main body of fleet, gambling in lighter winds closer to the centre of a high pressure, a strategy which gave them the race lead round the most northerly mark at Bishop Rock for nearly three days before their lack of time together in the Figaro 3 saw them progressively cede miles and places to some of the most experienced sailors in the class.

At the finish line off Saint Gilles Croix de Vie on the Vendee coast on Thursday evening they were still just less than 16 minutes behind the French race winners Xavier Macaire and Morgan Lagraviere (Groupe SNEF) - who were crowned overall victors of the event -and one minute shy of fourth place.

But as preparation for next month's Transat en Double Concarneau Saint Barthelemy the young duo could not be more pleased with the way they sailed.

Harris, who has returned to the Figaro class after a year away to help Costa improve, recalled, "It was a pretty tough race, we are well used to being wet all the time reaching in the Figaro 3 but it was so cold we were sailing in 30 minute spells all the time, with the wind chill it was brutal. You really did start to wonder where the enjoyment was at times. But we were so very focused because we were leading for a long time and you just know in the Figaro class that you can't give away a single metre." -- Andi Robertson

Last European Olympic Qualification Started In Vilamoura
Racing kicked off today in Vilamoura, Portugal, at the ILCA Vilamoura European Continental Qualification. This event will deliver the last European spots for the next 2021 Olympics in Tokyo.

After a long period without major regattas due to the pandemic situation, mainly all of the top sailors, even from qualified countries, are assisting to this event.

Organized by Vilamoura Sailing, this qualifier event is held for European countries to claim their remaining four slots for the Tokyo Olympic Games: two in the women's ILCA 6 fleet and two in the men's ILCA 7 fleet. There are seven countries competing for the two ILCA 6 Olympic tickets, and 17 countries vying for the two ILCA 7 slots.

150 sailors from 34 countries were able to come together for this event, as Vilamoura continues to be one of the few places in the world right now where sailing competitions are open. For many, this regatta represents the last chance to make it to Tokyo.

73rd Newport to Ensenada International Yacht Race
Newport Beach, California: Nearly 170 boats will cross the start line of the 73rd Newport to Ensenada International Yacht Race, April 23 off the Balboa Pier. From the start, nearly 120 boats will make the 125 nm trek to Ensenada; 20 will take the sprint course to Dana Point and 40 will head around the Coronado Islands on the extended San Diego course.

Thanks to the reduction of COVID restrictions and with the Mexican Navy offering landing assistance, sailors will safely be able to disembark and enjoy Ensenada.

After a night of competitive sailing fun, that is.

The Disney Family's latest incarnation of Pyewacket, a Volvo 70, will make its N2E debut. After smashing the elapsed time record in Newport Harbor Yacht Club's "Newport to Cabo San Lucas Race" last month, the crew will no doubt be looking to put another notch on its keel by beating the current monohull record of 9:35:34.

But they'll have to beat Damon Guizot's Zephyrus (a Reichel Pugh 77 and the 2018 winner of the Lahaina Yacht Club Trophy for Best Elapsed Time - ALL PHRF) and Compadres, owned by Compadres LLC, a modified Andrews 77 with a storied N2E history as Alchemy 77, (2004 first monohull to finish, first overall ULDB division) looking to make its triumphant return to the course – along with six other seasoned contenders in the UL Maxi Class.

Another boat making a celebratory return to the course is the Richley Family's 39-year-old Choate 48 Amante, a multiple-time trophy-winner, that has only missed three N2E's. "Amante and N2E have definitely been a family affair from the beginning with Mom, Dad, and three brothers participating since 1982," said Bud Richley. "Now Dad has passed and Mom does not race at 95, but she still prepares all of our food."

Last year, race organizers, the Newport Ocean Racing Association made the difficult decision to cancel the race for the first time in its esteemed history. In light of the COVID-19 pandemic and out of an abundance of caution for the organization's volunteers and numerous practical uncertainties the race was rescheduled. Last October, NOSA announced its commitment to holding the 2021 race.

Etchells Bedrock Trophy
The first event of the Cowes Etchells fleet 2021 season was the Bedrock Trophy organised by the Royal Thames Yacht Club held over the weekend of the 17/18th April. All competitors were glad for the opportunity to go racing after months of lockdown and no sailing. A strong entry of 14 Etchells meant that there would be some stiff competition for the first event of the season.

Saturday morning dawned sunny but with no wind, meaning a long postponement held on shore until the sea breeze kicked in at about 4pm. Everyone was very grateful to the RTYC race team for giving up their Saturday evening in order for us to go racing. Once we were out there however, the conditions were champagne sailing: 10-15 knots from the SW.

Sunday was once again sunny and light with another postponement on shore being put up by the RTYC race committee however with a 2:30pm cut-off time there was no opportunity for the sea breeze to build so there was no change to the overnight standings and Ante Razmilovic's Swedish Blue crewed by Brian Hammersley and James Downer was the winner of the Bedrock Trophy 2021 and also first Corinthian team.

All competitors were grateful to the race team for doing a great job with challenging conditions and are looking forward to the next Cowes Etchells event, the Sir Kenneth Preston Trophy on the 1st-3rd May. -- Jake Hardman

Top five overall
1. Swedish BLUE (Corinthian) - Ante Razmilovic / Brian Hammersley / James Downer, GBR, 5.0
2. Gelert - James Howells / Ruairidh Scott / Jamie Lea, GBR, 7.0
3. Man's Best Friend - JPaul Ward / Charlie Cumbley / Paul Childs, GBR, 10.0
4. Rocketman (Corinthian) - JRob Goddard / Joe Burns / Ed Haynes / Vicky Cowan, GBR, 15.0
5. China Wight - Nicholas Stagg / Tim Thubron / Matt Reid, GBR, 16.0

2021 Maxi Yacht Trophy
"The regatta will go ahead, we confirmed this in our press release in March and I can confirm it again now." commented Roberto Mottola di Amato, President of the Circolo Remo e Vela Italia, refuting any unsubstantiated claims to the contrary circulated in recent weeks and heightened by the unfortunate postponement of racing in Portofino, with dates now overlapping with the Maxi Trophy in Capri.

"The owners have told us that they want both to race in Capri, and to take part in our Tre Golfi regatta, and we are delighted to be able to accommodate them. Especially now that we have a clearer and more reassuring picture on the easing of restrictions in the month of May." continued the President of the organizing yacht club.

The schedule published in the Notice of Race on the event website six months ago remains unchanged. The website also provides full details of the anti-Covid protocol, which is constantly updated.

Two prize giving ceremonies will take place: on Friday 14th May the winners of racing in Capri will be announced, while only on Monday 17th, at the conclusion of the Tre Golfi offshore regatta, the winner of the combined ranking will be awarded the prestigious Rolex Trophy.

To optimize communication and limit contacts between the organizers and skippers, the RCSW will be a paperless regatta. All registrations and communications will take place exclusively via the event website where participants can use a live-chat to contact the organizers. Once registration is completed, and all the required documents have been provided, each participant and staff will receive a "boarding card" essential to access the regatta village

North Sea Regatta 2021 Cancelled
Unfortunately, after the press conference from last Tuesday we had to make the decision to cancel the North Sea Regatta again this year. We are disappointed that we had to make this decision after all our planning efforts for the additional program started to take shape. We hope to see you all next year!

In the meantime, check our social media communities to stay up to date, virtually socialize with fellow NSR sailors, share your favorite sailing moments or discuss your sailing questions. You can find us on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and Twitter under North Sea Regatta. Tag us in your posts and use the hashtags #MyNSR or #NorthSeaRegatta to get the conversation started.

The North Sea Regatta is an annual sailing event hosted by North Sea Regatta and Jachtclub Scheveningen during the Whitsun and Ascension holiday period. This event is the annual highlight for regatta sailors on tidal waters of the coast of Scheveningen The Hague. It is the ultimate sailing location where sailors of many different divisions can sharpen their skills, battle for the prizes at stake and meet each other onshore.

Last but not least the North Sea Regatta is the best event where volunteers are able to practice and improve their race management skills on open tidal water. This practice is crucial in order to conduct fair and equal racing in the upcoming top sport events as the Youth Sailing World Championships in 2022 and the World Championships in 2023 in Scheveningen The Hague. -- Steffie Plomp

Windfoiling joins British Youth Sailing's Olympic performance pathway

iQFOiL The iQFOiL youth windfoiling class has become a British Youth Sailing Recognised Class in recognition of the exciting new discipline's inclusion at the Paris 2024 and Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.

After windfoiling was chosen to replace the RS:X for the two Olympic cycles following Tokyo 2020, the iQFOiL class was named as the equipment of choice.

After careful consideration, British Youth Sailing has chosen to adopt the iQFOiL youth class as a Recognised Class, replacing the RS:X.

A comprehensive training programme is already underway in conjunction with the UK iQFOiL class to teach young sailors the art of foiling while developing their racing skills.

To learn more about the iQFOiL, click here to go to the UK class association page.

The International iQFOiL Youth Class plans to stage has its inaugural world championship in Lake Garda, Italy, at the end of July 2021.

Windfoiling will also feature at the RYA Youth National Championships at Plymouth Youth Sailing from August 13 to 15.

Royal Temple Yacht Club- Spring Series Opener
Racing in 2021 kicked off in sunny conditions with a chilly 8-10 knot breeze from the North and calm seas, ideal conditions for the eager crews to get back to sailing, in what promises (fingers crossed), to be a full season of racing. It was great to see so many out with 13 yachts starting the race.

The IRC Class 1 and 2 fleet made a clean start with a short fetch to the first mark, against the southerly running tide. As usual, the short first leg saw considerable congestion at the mark, where the fast starting X-99 'Xpedite' was caught by the Pronavia 42 'Assassin' and rounded side-by-side separated by inches, with Rob Smith's 2020 one-off 'Kabluzo' level and above the mark.

A series of runs and beats around the club marks saw the field begin to spread out with the down-tide runs and beats against, favouring the boats with better up-wind performance.

'Assassin' took line honours from the Corby 36 'Stiletto' and squeaked a 12 second win on corrected time in Class 1. Class 2 saw the X-34 'Foxy' take line honours from the First 34.7 'Cobra' and 'Xpedite'. Foxy's 15 second lead was not enough to prevent Cobra taking the class win on corrected time.

Meanwhile in the Cruiser Classes with the line clear Pippy and Titch had a good start leading Manana and Cordyll 2. A short beat to Channel Mark 2 followed by a longer spinnaker run to ICOM. Pippy in the lead, followed by Titch with Manana holding the middle ground from Cordyll struggling to get round Channel Mark 2.

A shortened course was announced and then a confusion over the course by Titch meant that they retired as well as last place Cordyll. This lead to a two horse dash for the finish with Pippy getting line honours but Manana got a first position on corrected time.
