Charleston Race Week a Success as Grand Prix Racing Return
While major regattas around the world are still getting canceled because of coronavirus, Charleston Race Week elected to press forward with its 25th anniversary celebration. It came one year late since the 2020 edition was canceled due to the developing pandemic last April.

Mass vaccinations combined with a decrease in positive cases throughout most of the United States prompted longtime event director Randy Draftz to forge forward with a Charleston Race Week 2021.

Regatta management did so with an abundance of caution and numerous precautions were put into place to ensure the event was held in a safe and responsible manner. All participating sailors were encouraged to get tested before attending the regatta and that provision did lead to some positive tests that caused a few boats to pull out.

Even though Charleston Race Week has a well-earned reputation as a party regatta, organizers made the tough but wise decision to cancel all social activities. For this year, the focus was fully on producing top-notch racing, and on that front the regatta was a tremendous success.

Race committees on all four inside circles banged off two races in breezy conditions on Sunday to complete a busy series for all one-design fleets. Classes on Circle 1 (VX One), Circle 3 (J/88, J/105, ORC D) all reached 10 races, while those on Circle 2 (J/70, Melges 24) and Circle 4 (J/22, J/24, PHRF Inshore) finished with nine.

Offshore racing for the ORC A and B classes that sailed distance courses along with the PHRF (Spinnaker A and B, Non-Spinnaker) classes that did pursuit starts was also action-packed with all three days delivering solid conditions.

Dawn Treader and Gentoo Triumph
The RORC Race Team set an inshore race in the Solent, approximately 38 nautical miles for the IRC fleet, and 32 nautical miles for IRC Two Handed. A north-easterly wind of 10-13 knots provided sub-planing conditions. Tactics and boat handling were the keys to performance. Class winners were Ed Bell's JPK 1180 Dawn Treader and James Harayda's Sun Fast 3300 Gentoo.

Ed Bell's JPK 1180 Dawn Treader the winner of the IRC Class. Michael O'Donnell's J/121 Darkwood was second. RORC Commodore James Neville, racing HH42 Ino XXX took line honours for the class and after IRC time correction was third by just 13 seconds.

In the IRC Two-Handed Class, James Harayda racing Sun Fast 3300 Gentoo, with Dee Caffari, was first across the line and won IRC Two-Handed by 53 seconds. Kelvin Rawlings racing Sun Fast 3300 Aries with Stuart Childerley was second. Rob Craigie racing Sun Fast 3600 Bellino with Deb Fish was third.

The Royal Ocean Racing Club provided Olympic coach Hugh Styles to assist the IRC Two-Handed class. "The main aim of today's coaching was to look at rig settings and sail trim," commented Hugh Styles. "At this early stage in the season, teams are a little rusty, that is understandable. Understanding mast tune and sail trim techniques is a good way to start the development that can continue through the year. We will have a Zoom debrief to analyse today's racing for all of the class."

The RORC Spring Series comes to a conclusion with Race 3, scheduled to start on Saturday, 1st May. The Notice of Race requires that all crew shall comply with current Covid-19 guidelines, and with respect to social distancing at all times. -- Louay Habib

2024 Vendee Globe projects have already been launched
Among the best news from the IMOCA class point of view must be that 25 of the 33 entries finished the Vendee Globe, and as well as that two women sailors carried on to the finish line despite having had to abandon.

IMOCA Class President Antoine Mermod: That's a great source of pride. A Vendee Globe is such a huge adventure that completing it is a success in itself. Getting around is always an ambition, and getting to the finish line is important for the partners, the teams and all those people who invest in our skippers. It is important that things turn out well for the healthy future of programmes, the race and the class. Future projects have already been launched and they are catalysed by the evidence of a fleet which is reliable sailed by well organised and prepared skippers who are up to the challenges. In this respect, teams, the Vendee Globe organization, the FFVoile and the rules committee in particular and us have all worked hard over four years to set the bar high.

So the Vendee Globe 2024 already looks promising, do you think?
A. M.: Yes, indeed we already have a very strong momentum for the next edition, yes. When the previous race mixes the reliability of the boats with great stories it inspires skippers and partners to come back and newcomers to join the adventure, and others who raced previous editions to come back and have another go. The numbers for this 2020 edition were exceptional: this Vendee Globe attracted a very large audience during a particular period when sailing really stood out as never before. Now everyone wants to do even better in four years, and people want to continue to be inspired. It was a great success.

With a view to the Vendee Globe 2024, what are the directions that the IMOCA Class (which is meeting this Thursday for a General Assembly) will take?
A. M.: We are in the process of finalizing the changes in the rules (all the technical rules to which boats must comply, editor's note). There will be no major technological breakthrough, we will be very much in line with what has prevailed in this Vendee Globe. We have seen all the development that needs to be done to optimise boats with large foils, to finesse their performance. We are going to limit the size of the foils which we did not do for 2016 because we did not have the accumulated knowledge to plan for the future. Now we understand better and teams are all moving towards solutions that seem adequate. This is a time to regulate foils and their use. We are also going to vary the orientation of the mast because, in the Southern Ocean IMOCAs with very tight lines found it very difficult to go fast. By changing the orientation of the masts the driving vector will be more upwards, and this will generate a big gain. And in fact now we only go the Sothern Oceans every four years and only learn each Vendee Globe edition, but the boats need to be able to be more versatile to tackle what in essence is a third of the race.

UK Flying Fifteen Class tribute to HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh
By now many will have read and seen the sad news that HRH Prince Philip has died - much will be written about his significant contribution to many walks of life whether science, industry, commerce, environment, sport, and family. Through his concept of the Duke of Edinburgh's Award scheme, launched 65 years ago, he encouraged the youth of the day to build skills, confidence and resilience that equipped them for life - in many cases through outdoor activity.

Prince Philip's other main passion was the sea and his link with sailing was prominent throughout, none more so than during Cowes Week when the Royal Yacht was anchored off Cowes with many of the Royal family actively involved in the week's racing. Flying Fifteen K192 - Coweslip - was a gift from Uffa Fox to Her Majesty The Queen and Prince Philip on the occasion of their marriage in 1949, and Uffa and Prince Philip were often to be found sailing Coweslip throughout the 1950s & '60s, usually in front of the paparazzi of the day and frequently with significant racing success... fun times.

The Prince subsequently became life Patron of the Flying Fifteen class association, and indeed Coweslip can still be seen today on display in Edinburgh with the Royal Yacht Britannia.

The thoughts of the UK Flying Fifteen Association are with the Queen and her family at this moment, and we wish them many happy and fond memories that will hopefully bring smiles to the fore.

Alpha Racing Team (Boulden) wins the 2021 Youth Cup
A disruptive collision between Alpha Racing Team (Boulden) and Swan River Sailing Team (Prieto-Low) on the second race of the Finals did not stop Will Boulden from winnng the title. The Alpha Racing Team lost only one race from a total of 22 battles during the 2021 Youth Cup. Well done to the entire crew from Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club: Will Boulden (Skipper), James Farquharson (Bow), Lachy Gilmour (Main), NiallMorrow (Trim), and Alex Negri (Pit).

World class Finn fleet keen to start racing at Europeans in Vilamoura
The 2021 Open and U23 Finn European Championship gets underway in Vilamoura, Portugal, on Monday with around 49 sailors from 29 nations completing measurement and registration over the weekend. Over the coming week 10 races are scheduled up to Friday 16 April.

The furthest travelled for this event and taking part in his first major Finn event since 2019, is Jake Lilley, from Australia.

"It's really nice to re-connect after an extended period away. It was great action when we were all together for the Gold Cup in Melbourne, so I'm really looking forward to more racing at the Euros and Gold Cup in Portugal this year."

While he has not been racing in world quality fleets as usual, he has been able to train in large fleets in Australia

Two of the British sailors have come almost direct from the America's Cup in New Zealand. While Giles Scott, is preparing to defend his Olympic title in Tokyo in August, INEOS Team UK grinder, Ben Cornish, is also back in a Finn for a while, though he says it's not a comeback.

One of the favourites in Vilamoura is Nicholas Heiner. After a string of podium places in recent years, including runner up at the 2019 Finn Gold Cup, he is still looking for that first major win

With registration and measurement now completed, the first races are scheduled to get underway at 12.00 Monday, with two races per day through to Friday.

After a major refit, the 31-meter Borkumriff II is raring to go. She offers all the elegance of a classic sailing yacht experience alongside sumptuous accommodation and a focus on hospitality from her expert crew to make the most of your time on the water this summer and beyond.

The 31-meter Borkumriff II was originally delivered in 1982 by Lubbe Voss for a highly experienced and passionate yacht owner. After a comprehensive refit in 2020, the charming, classically styled schooner has been given a contemporary twist that makes her the ideal choice for relaxed family getaways or as a fun base for groups of friends on the lookout for adventure.

WHAT

Inside, Borkumriff II's master cabin has been given a full decorative revamp, including paint and varnishing work as well as a new hardwood mahogany floor. The saloon and guest cabins also have a fresh look thanks to new upholstery, paint and varnish work, alongside audiovisual and air conditioning system modernizations. In addition, all her cabins have new mattresses, pillows and bed linens.

The wheelhouse has been renovated, including new Thermopane insulated windows with chromed frames, new flooring and upholstery, and a full redecoration and revarnishing. The galley and crew areas have also been refurbished, with new equipment including laundry machines. Energy efficient LED lighting has been introduced throughout the interior, and she has a suite of brand new navigation and electronics systems.

On deck, all hardware has been updated or refurbished, including the gangway and stairs, and the deck rubber has been replaced. Her tenders - including a fun wooden motor launch and practical RIB - have been given a comprehensive service. After her five-year inspection in June 2020, Borkumriff II is fully compliant with the necessary class standards.

Speed, safety, strength and silence: these 4 elements are at the core of the R/P-NAUTA 151', a one-off, bluewater performance sloop with general concept by Nauta Design in build at the Royal Huisman shipyard.

"Combining comfort and safety to explore the world with an extremely lightweight yacht that was competitive in superyacht regattas wasn't an easy task," says Mario Pedol, co-founder of Nauta Design in Milan. "The owner wanted a solid, autonomous and safe yacht that was also efficient and modern with a powerful sail plan." The request came from a repeat client for whom Nauta had previously designed a 34-metre sailing yacht based on a broadly similar brief. The owner was assisted as for the previous time by highly experienced MCM's Nigel Ingram as Owner's Representative.

WHAT

Working for a repeat client is always very gratifying" says Nigel Ingram "and on this occasion especially so as not only MCM but also Nauta and Reichel/Pugh, all of whom worked on the previous project, received the call from this very experienced client. A strong team to work with Royal Huisman on this very special project."

This time the owner was ready to step up in size to 46 metres, but he wanted to retain the spirit of his former yacht, including the deckhouse design.

Reichel/Pugh ultimately tested 12 models before development of the final hull shape. The VPP results indicate that in 10 knots of breeze the R/P-Nauta 151 will sail upwind under mainsail and jib with a boat speed of almost 13 knots and nearly 18 knots when reaching at a wind angle of 90 degrees in a 15 knot breeze.

From 1977 up to the present day: over 50 years of evolution since the Swan 55 was pencilled on the drawing board of our designers in Pietarsaari. Starting with the first legendary Swan 55 designed by Sparkman & Stephens in 1970, then the Swan 57 launched in 1977 and ten years afterwards, the Swan 53 drawn from the pen of Germán Frers, as were her sisters the Swan 56 in 1997 and Swan 53 in 2005, today we are writing another page in the history of this awe-inspiring model.

* From Alistair Skinner:

Magnus is NOT being overly 'gushy' about Bob's book. His is just 7 before mine (372). The most amazing thing is that someone would let this book go, it is the most prized volume (2 actually) in my library. Bob actually mentored me when I started writing and has led to me being 'published 500+ times in various media, including Magnus's own Rule 9blog although I doubt he would remember. If there was ever an example to a young budding journalist of how detailed one's research should be (yachting or otherwise) then 'An Absorbing Interest' is just that.

The painstaking research to, for example, be able to quote the delta at every mark of every match of the America's Cup is astounding.

Perhaps, now that Bob is, sadly, no longer part of the Hall of Fame selection committee (he would never have nominated himself) we might see 'Mr America's Cup' long overdue election to that august list of names. Like Magnus, I too am waiting (impatiently) for Barry Pickthall to complete the Volume 3 of this magnum opus. The Fish - gone but never forgotten.
