Charleston Race Week Returns

Charleston Race Week There was activity at many of the marinas around Charleston Harbor on Thursday, and it was a welcome sight.

Sailors were spotted hauling hardware and gear along the docks at Charleston Harbor Marina & Resort, as well as across the Ashley River at Charleston Yacht Club and Carolina Yacht Club.

Seeing crews rigging boats and performing other preparation was a clear sign Charleston Race Week was back following a one-year hiatus. Canceled in 2020 because of the coronavirus pandemic, the iconic regatta will celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2021.

Charleston Race Week organizers, led by longtime event director Randy Draftz, have gone above and beyond to ensure this year's regatta is held in a safe and responsible manner. It has meant taking drastic measures, such as canceling the popular post-race parties on the beach at Charleston Harbor Marina & Resort.

A strong fleet of 177 boats in 14 classes will compete on five different racing circles at Charleston Race Week 2021, which begins Friday. Quantum Sail Design Group is serving as presenting sponsor of the three-day regatta, which traditionally completes a double-digit number of races.

This marks the first time Charleston Race Week has implemented live tracking on all five courses. Trac Trac devices, the latest innovative technology in tracking, will allow regatta organizers to deliver live broadcasts of racing from all four inshore courses.

Quantum will have seasoned professionals such as Cameron Appleton and Farley Fontonet providing expert commentary and analysis during racing.

Melges 24 is the largest class of the regatta with 34 entries with 2019 Charleston Race Week champion - Weisleder and his Lucky Dog team leading the way. Also returning is Bruce Ayres, who skippered Monsoon to a runner-up result two years ago. Other perennially competitive boats include 3 ½ Men (Steve Suddath), Full Throttle (Brian Porter), Shaka (KC Shannon) and Decorum (Megan Ratliff). -- Bill Wagner

Preview RORC Spring Series Race 2
The Royal Ocean Racing Club Spring Series continues this weekend with Race 2 of the three-race series, designed to get teams back racing for the 2021 RORC Season. The RORC Spring Series is open to IRC rated boats including an IRC Two-Handed Class and MOCRA rated multihulls. Online entry is open at: rorc.sailgate.com/

The Lombard 46 Pata Negra has been one of the most successful boats racing with the RORC in recent years. Pata Negra is returning to RORC racing in the Spring Series, under the new ownership of Andrew Hall. RORC Commodore, James Neville will be racing HH42 Ino XXX and will be the boat to beat having won last weekend's race. Past RORC Commodore, Steven Anderson will be racing Corby 40 Cracklin Rosie. Ed Bell's JPK 1180 Dawn Treader was just 44 seconds off the podium for last weekend's race.

One of the lowest rated boats racing under IRC will be Ian Handley's Mustang Mk2 Gr8 Banter, which is crewed by friends and family with co-owner Tim James. Gr8 Banter showed impressive form in last year's Race the Wight, placing third overall in a fleet of over 100 starters.

14 teams have entered the race in IRC Two-Handed including Tim Goodhew, racing Sun Fast 3200 Cora with Kelvin Matthews. The pair are firm friends looking to increase their performance with their gunsights set on this year's Rolex Fastnet Race.

The RORC Spring Series Notice of Race requires that all crew shall comply with current Covid-19 guidelines, and with respect to social distancing at all times. -- Louay Habib

2021 Rolex Big Boat Series On For September
The Notice of Race has been posted and registration is open for the 2021 Rolex Big Boat Series at St. Francis Yacht Club in San Francisco, California.

Scheduled for September 15-19, 2021, the regatta includes four days of high-test competition for boats in the following classes:

Monohulls with an LOA greater than 30 feet and a current fully or partially measured ORR rating certificate;
Classic boats built prior to 1955 with an LOA greater than 48 feet and an ORRez rating certificate;
One Design boats of the J/105, J/88, J/70, J/120 and Express 37 classes.

The event will serve as the J/88 North American Championship and also the Express 37 Pacific Coast Championship.

St. Francis Yacht Club's 2021 Commodore Bill Dana said the club is making the necessary accommodations to host visiting sailors safely, and he's hoping a year off in 2020 will mean boat owners and crews are more eager than ever to compete. Dana recently purchased a veteran RBBS-competitor Santa Cruz 52 that will be lining up in the ORR fleet.

RBBS Regatta Chair Susan Ruhne is looking forward to celebrating three decades of Express 37s on the start line by hosting the class's Pacific Coast Championship. "Competition in that class has been phenomenal over the years and I am excited to see the local kingpins be tested by out-of-state talent traveling here to compete for the title."

Eligible boats may enter by completing the online entry form at https://rolexbigboatseries.com and paying the full entry fee on or before July 31, 2021, to avoid a $200 late fee penalty. Should the regatta be canceled, entrants will be refunded their fees.

Nova Scotia to host 2022 World Championships
Halifax, N.S. Canada: Nova Scotia will host a 400-strong field of the world's best sailors from over 35 countries when the World Championships for three Olympic classes, the 49er, 49erFX and Nacra 17, kick off in September 2022. Taking place in Canada for the first time in its history, the competition will be held on St. Margaret's Bay during the six-day event.

Sail Nova Scotia won the rights to host the 2022 49er, 49erFX and Nacra 17 World Championships, which will run September 6-11, 2022, in partnership with Hubbards Sailing Club, St. Margaret Sailing Club and Sail Canada.

Building on Nova Scotia's long-held affinity and connection to the sea, the province is gaining a reputation in the sailing world as an accomplished host of national and international sailing events. The event will be held on the waters of St. Margaret's Bay, which has played host to numerous national and international sailing events over the years. These waters make an excellent venue for the championship. The venue has clean water and moderate to strong consistent winds in a spectacularly beautiful setting.

Olympic Dreams Comes True
The Mussanah Open Championship, organised by Oman Sail, came to a close after six days of exhilarating action on the water across five classes. With Olympic qualification on the line, as well as the honour of winning gold, silver and bronze medals, racing on the final day was tense, dramatic and of an incredibly high standard as dreams were made reality in perfect conditions.

The 49er class gold medal was won by the Indian pair of KC Ganapathy and Varun Thakkar who finished on top for the fourth successive day and have qualified for the Olympics. Akira Sakai and Russel Aylsworth representing Hong Kong gave the performance of the day to secure second place and silver, and the Omani team of Musab Al Hadi and Waleed Al Kindi gained two places from yesterday to end the championship in third, taking the bronze medal on home waters.

China's Ye Jin and Chen Shasha sealed victory in the 49er FX class and booked their place in Tokyo with a narrow win over Molly Highfield and Sandy Wing Chi Choi from Hong Kong. India's Ekta Yadav and Ritika Dangi ended the tournament in third place after a strong display in the final race.

Ryan Lo Jun Han of Singapore took top spot in the Laser class and wins gold after dominating the fleet all week and easing to victory today in the medal race, sealing his place in Tokyo.

The mystery of a murderous 1600s pirate

Coins Warwick, R.I. - A handful of coins unearthed from a pick-your-own-fruit orchard in rural Rhode Island and other random corners of New England may help solve one of the planet's oldest cold cases.

The villain in this tale: a murderous English pirate who became the world's most-wanted criminal after plundering a ship carrying Muslim pilgrims home to India from Mecca, then eluded capture by posing as a slave trader.

"It's a new history of a nearly perfect crime," said Jim Bailey, an amateur historian and metal detectorist who found the first intact 17th-century Arabian coin in a meadow in Middletown.

That ancient pocket change - among the oldest ever found in North America - could explain how pirate Capt. Henry Every vanished into the wind.

On Sept. 7, 1695, the pirate ship Fancy, commanded by Every, ambushed and captured the Ganj-i-Sawai, a royal vessel owned by Indian emperor Aurangzeb, then one of the world's most powerful men. Aboard were not only the worshipers returning from their pilgrimage, but tens of millions of dollars' worth of gold and silver.

What followed was one of the most lucrative and heinous robberies of all time.

The Oldest Boat In Australia?

Oldest Boat In Australia John Wilson is a master story teller so having someone like John with us was truly wonderful as he was the person to unlock the stories behind the stories. We were to spend ten days together, a small film crew of three people and John.

On the day we went hunting in the mangroves, John didn't come out with us. Gathering periwinkles and mud mussels is woman's work. But once, having survived the crocodiles and we returned from the beach, John wanted to take me to the Museum. Because there, recently discovered, lay a boat, cut out of a single log, a true dug-out canoe believed to be the oldest craft of its kind in the Northern Territory.

Together we spent a wonderful hour talking about the influence and impact of Makassan boat building for the people of the Tiwi and how the introduction of the axe changed everything.

There is some dispute amongst scholars as to when the Makassan's of Sulawesi first interacted with the indigenous people of the Northern Australia. There is evidence of trading back as far as the 1500's. However it was in the late 1600's and early 1700's when the Trepang Industry – the hunt for Sea Cucumber - a marine invertebrate prized for its culinary value generally and for its medicinal properties in Chinese markets, truly ramped up.

Tiwi people would show the Makassans where to harvest Sea Cucumber and in return, the Makassans were to teach the Tiwi how to carve wood with an axe to make a boat from a single log of wood.

These seaworthy boats, unlike traditional bark canoes, allowed people to fish the ocean, for the first time for dugongs and turtles and it was all due to the Maskassans showing the Tiwi why and how to leave two foot shaped steps in the bow of the boat. These steps allowed a hunter to stand solidly in the bow using height and leverage to place great force into the action of throwing a spear.

American Magic skipper reveals life-threatening drama in capsize
The high speed capsize of Patriot remains one of the most vivid memories of Auckland 2021, with the United States team losing control of their boat during a tricky manoeuvre rounding the top mark for the final time in a round-robin race against Italians Luna Rossa in the Prada Cup challenger series.

So much emphasis was placed on the need to save the AC75 from sinking after it suffered a large hole in its hull ,that the danger to the 11 sailors on board was almost overlooked.

But it was clearly an alarming time for Terry Hutchinson who was on the side of the boat that was instantly under water.

The vastly experienced Hutchinson, 52, opened up on his dangerous situation in the just-released Last Call video produced by the regatta organisers that wraps up their coverage of the summer of sailing in Auckland.

Hutchinson said his most vivid memory of the incident was when Kiwi helmsman Dean Barker yelled out "I've lost the rudder" as the boat was hit by a 23.5 knot gust as they went through the bear away. Hutchinson knew they were in trouble, and he quickly found himself in the most danger of all as he couldn't free himself from the cockpit.
