Transpac 51 welcomes GoodEnergy as its 60th entry
The 63-foot Reichel/Pugh-designed GoodEnergy co-skippered by George Hershman and Mark Comings is now the 60th entry in this year’s 51st edition of the Transpac, the Transpacific Yacht Club’s 2225-mile ocean racing classic from Los Angeles to Honolulu. GoodEnergy joins a strong fleet of similar high-performance monohulls along with a diverse array of many other boat types who will be starting in the race in three waves beginning on July 13th, 2021.

Having just bought this proven offshore yacht from Australia - she was built in 2009 as Loki in carbon/nomex at McConaghy, and was the 2020 winner of the Sydney-Hobart Race - Hershman thinks this is right time for Transpac.

“This has been a goal for us to pull together a great group of friends and talented sailors to do Transpac together,” Hershman said. “When we found such a well-accomplished boat like Loki, we knew this was the right boat and right time to bring together the GoodEnergy team for this race.”

While this is the first Transpac for Hershman, he says he has surrounded himself with a strong veteran team the includes co-skipper Mark Comings, navigator Jib Kelly, Chuck Clay, Mike Burch, Kenny Dair and others to be named soon for the roster of 12 crew. To prepare for the race, the team plans to do the SoCal 300 in May, and some work on the boat

Many members of the GoodEnergy team are from Cabrillo Beach YC, located at the starting venue’s Cabrillo Marina and not far from the starting line at Point Fermin in San Pedro. For those in the race who are not based locally, organizers from Transpacific YC have recently arranged a special service for Transpac participants to help with hotel bookings, rental cars, and more: visit www.visitsanpedro.org/transpac2021 for more information on this service. And for help with berthing requests, Al Garnier is available to help at .

Hamble Classics design competition for new Regatta One-Design Class

Regatta One-Design Class In response to numerous requests for more one-design racing at the Hamble Classics Regatta the event organisers Jonty Sherwill and Vicki Weston are requesting reputable yacht designers to submit their vision for a classic style family sailing yacht that will fit within the event’s Spirit of Tradition eligibility requirements.

Some parameters have been set to ensure classic values are maintained and so that designs can be judged fairly. Maximum overall length up to 40 feet (excluding any sprits), maximum draft 6 feet (plus centreboard if specified), and option of cruising interior or day racer fit out with one-design ballast equalisation. Hull and spars are to be of timber construction with sustainable epoxy resins allowed (more details available on request).

Submissions will be judged on aesthetics, projected sailing ability and ‘niceness’ with points awarded for traditional features, e.g. bronze fittings, copper sheathing, cotton sails, leaky decks, smelly lockers etc.

Plans submitted must be hand drawn on vellum and using imperial dimensions only.

Nancy Blackett’s 90th Birthday
Click on image for photo gallery.

Nancy Blackett’ Arthur Ransome’s favourite yacht Nancy Blackett will be 90 this year. He named her after one of his most famous characters, self-styled pirate Nancy Blackett of Swallows and Amazons fame, and he put her in one of his most exciting books, We Didn’t Mean to Go to Sea.

The beautiful little 28ft cutter has been laid up for the winter at Robertson’s Boatyard in Woodbridge, Suffolk. She will be launched at the end of April and during the next few weeks, volunteers plan to give Nancy a thorough spit and polish (and antifoul!) to get her ready for the big day and her coming season.

Festivities will have to be modest, thanks to the on-going pandemic restrictions but the Trust members are still determined to give this much-loved little ship a celebratory launch on her special anniversary. Bunting and cake are planned and three cheers are imperative!

What next? The Trust hopes that more of its usual programme of events and sail days will be possible this summer as restrictions are gradually lifted and life returns to something approaching normal. The focus will be on local sailing in Nancy’s home waters of the River Orwell and nearby to enable as many people as possible to enjoy sailing, or just visiting, her.

Trust President Peter Willis says: “We preserved Nancy so that she should be sailed and enjoyed by anybody who loves Arthur Ransome’s books - or just beautiful old boats, and that’s just what we hope to be doing this summer.”

Cowes Week Ltd announces Connected Cowes 5G Project
Cowes Week has been selected by the Department of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) to participate in the 5G Test and Create project.

With DCMS funding Cowes Week Ltd and its partners, aql and the 1851 Trust will deliver the Connected Cowes 5G initiative and showcase its capabilities at the Cowes Week regatta in the first week of August 2021.

Covering sailing from a spectators viewpoint has always been difficult but the Connected Cowes 5G Project will see high definition 360 degree cameras fitted to 50 boats at next year’s regatta, each of those cameras beaming back real-time, high definition pictures to the Cowes Live TV presentation, which will be shown on big screens around the town, as well as being available on the internet worldwide.

A virtual reality lounge on the Parade in Cowes will enable spectators to don headsets and be transported out to one of 50 boat racing in Cowes Week, seeing exactly what is going on right across the Solent. Turn your head and the camera will show you what the crew are looking at right that second.

The new Cowes Week Spectator App will bring all of this technology directly to spectators both here in the UK and around the world, further enhancing Cowes Week‘s global reach as one of the most famous sailing regattas in the world. Race organisers will use the new technology to enhance their race management capabilities and with 700 boats circulating on 42 different race courses every day that is an enormous challenge in its own right.

Denmark SailGP Team first to hit the water in Bermuda ahead of SailGP Season 2

SailGP SailGP is officially back on the water with the first of its supercharged foiling catamarans launched ahead of the Season 2 opener - the Bermuda Sail Grand Prix presented by Hamilton Princess - later this month.

Over one year since the high-speed F50 catamarans were last seen in action, SailGP returns for Season 2 with additional teams, an expanded season and a purpose-led agenda at its heart - racing for a better future, championing a world powered by nature.

The Denmark SailGP Team presented by ROCKWOOL became the first of the eight nation fleet to hit the water on Friday. And, as the eye-catching boat took to Bermuda’s Great Sound, it signaled a long-awaited return to action for the global racing league.

Denmark SailGP Team helm Nicolai Sehested said: “It’s a huge day for our team, and for the whole of SailGP. We’ve been dreaming of stepping back onboard the F50 for more than 12 months, and it feels kind of surreal that the day is finally here.

“These boats are absolute beasts - and they haven’t lost any bite, that’s for sure. I think we are going to see performance and speed limits pushed further than ever before this season.”

For its first sail on Bermuda waters, the Danish boat featured a smaller 18-meter wingsail. The modular system is a new innovation for SailGP Season 2 that allows the wing to increase or reduce in size to enable racing to take place in a broader range of conditions.

Denmark SailGP Team presented by ROCKWOOL will join seven other nations - the league’s reigning champions Australia, plus France, Great Britain, Japan, New Zealand, Spain and United States - on the SailGP Season 2 start line later this month.

Notably, recent America’s Cup winners Peter Burling and Blair Tuke will join the circuit to lead the New Zealand entry, setting up a tantalizing sequel with Cup rivals Jimmy Spithill (helm, United States) and Ben Ainslie (helm, Great Britain).

Austrian sailor Norbert Sedlacek built the boat he plans on sailing 38,000 miles in seven months sailing the world's five oceans and across the Northwest Passage. Built by his company, Innovation Yachts, the Open 60AAL is built with filava which is made from enhanced volcanic rock filaments. Sedlacek is working with the volcanic material as he explains it is an upgrade from carbon fibre, with a higher density, is cheaper to use and highly resistant to sun and humidity. Read More

Open 60AAL

This summer, Austrian sailor Norbert Sedlacek is embarking on an adventure that no seafarer has ever accomplished - circumnavigating the world alone on a grueling 38,000-mile voyage without outside support. The seven-month challenge includes all five of the world’s oceans and the notorious Northwest Passage. Sedlacek’s doing it on a boat he built himself out of volcanic fiber, with a balsa-wood core.

The seasoned sailor remains unphased by the gruesome voyage, confident in the performance and durability of his volcanic-fiber boat, the Open60AAL. Designed by Sedlacek’s company, Innovation Yachts, the volcanic material being used is called Filava.

“Filava is an exciting material because it’s an upgrade from carbon fiber,” Sedlacek told Robb Report. “Some of its properties are similar to carbon but it has a higher density, is much cheaper and highly resistant to natural elements like sun damage and humidity.” Filava is a roving - a long and narrow bundle of fiber - made from enhanced volcanic rock filaments formed via a batch melt, which hot lava is then added to and vitrified by cooling. It is manufactured in sheets like fiberglass.

The Open60AAL will also be lighter than a similar-sized carbon-fiber sailing vessel. The 60-footer, which has been in production since 2016, is stable, light and fast enough to sail through the Northwest Passage, even with little wind.

The HH44 OPEN has been designed by HH Catamarans in collaboration with the Disabled Sailors Association (DSA) of the UK specifically for their clients. The DSA clients seek independence, dignity, and the ability to compete with able bodied sailors. The HH44's innovation and careful design enable the disabled sailor to easily get on and off the boat, down into the hulls with full chair turning room, and up onto the side decks and foredeck.

Working directly in the UK with Mike Wood founder of the DSA UK, Naval Architect James Hakes has created an outstanding design that encompasses everything required in a stunning new look that will once again set a new benchmark in the industry. The salon is huge at 31sqm, with customary HH luxury furnishing and modern styling. At the forward end of the salon an internal helm station offers complete weather protection and is ergonomically configured for full helm and sail control from a wheelchair. At the aft end of the salon is a complete working galley. Aside from the striking looks this catamaran OPENS up so that the apparent breeze flows through, giving the sailor an outdoor feeling. The two large forward salon windows tuck away, there's an impressively large opening sunroof, the side windows slide forward to open, the salon entry doors open into the cabin top, and a large opening safari window at the aft end of the salon will make cooking at the galley while facing aft a new sensation..

The HH44 OPEN will come with the same performance and luxury that the HH line has become recognized and awarded for. Performance tuning and VPP development for the daggerboard and rudder design comes from KND Sailing Performance. At only 9000kg displacement, a 19m carbon mast and carbon longeron with generous sail plan will ensure quality sailing even in light air.
