Sam Davies: What it really meant to turn left
When there are 33 skippers in a Vendée Globe race it is easy to overlook the details on what happens to some of them, especially if they drop out of the race after having stopped, but then continue on the course, as Sam Davies has done.

With Davies, the skipper of Initiatives-Coeur, the moment of truth was the day she set sail again from Cape Town where her boat had undergone two weeks of repairs following a violent, boat-stopping crash in the southern ocean that damaged her keel. She was presented with a simple choice, turn right and head back to France the short and relatively easy way…or turn left.

And turn left is what she did – a course of action that thrust her immediately into weeks of relentless southern ocean sailing, as she re-joined the course over 900 miles behind the last competitors in the fleet. It was easy to overlook the bravery and commitment that this decision required as Initiatives-Coeur re-appeared on the tracker, but in that half shaded-out form that denotes a sailor no longer taking part in the race.

So the truth of it was that Davies, 46, was ready to turn left, but the reality of what she was doing still came as a shock. She struggled with loneliness, battled the pain from broken ribs inflicted in a crash in which Initiatives-Coeur stopped dead from 20 knots, and struggled with the psychological trauma left over from that terrifying moment when her race came to an end – an accident, she says, that was similar to the one experienced by Alex Thomson and Neil McDonald when they lost the keel on Hugo Boss in the 2019 Transat Jacques Vabre.

Turn on the SW.ITCH - a step towards Classic Keelboat racing?

Swallow The good news that outdoor sport can start again from the end of March could not have been better timed for sailing in the UK. With sailing established as a Covid low-risk activity it is perfectly positioned to be in the vanguard of the return to normality that we have been so keenly awaiting.

The Swallow class at Itchenor plan to hit the ground running with a new promotion. For those that know their way around a race course, the National Swallows are offering SW.ITCH, a stepping stone from dinghy sailing to racing your own classic day-racing keelboat or a step away from crew and time intensive big boat racing. Successful candidates - who are likely to have some dinghy racing experience - will have the use of one of these wonderful twenty six foot 'modern' classics to take part in the National Swallow class's midsummer racing programme, including the 'away' events at Cowes.

If you think this might be for you then please visit us at www.swallowclass.org to find out more. The light at the end of the tunnel after an exceedingly long winter? Let's all go sailing again!

Ullman Sails Long Beach Race Week On Hold Until June 2022
Alamitos Bay Yacht Club and Long Beach Yacht Club have announced the 2021 Ullman Sails Long Beach Race Week (LBRW) has been canceled. City-wide pandemic restrictions have prompted the decision, according to event Co-Chair Steve Mueller, including constraints on dock space and parking lot permits which would limit participation of several classes of boats. "If we are forced to eliminate a lot of our competitive classes, and can't have our traditional parties, it just won't be Long Beach Race Week!" Mueller added. "As we cannot run it in the fashion it deserves, and history demands, we regrettably have decided to cancel."

Each year the regatta draws more than 100 teams from the West Coast of the US, Canada and Mexico, and beyond. Three days of windward/leeward and random leg races, in both one-design and PHRF fleets, tap race management pros from ABYC, LBYC and other area yacht clubs, to run courses known for excitement and professionalism. And Long Beach' "classic conditions" guarantee a challenging breeze and venue for premier racing.

LBRW 2020 was canceled in April 2020 as the pandemic was ramping up, with high hopes of returning in 2021. Last run in 2019, the regatta saw winds grazing 20 knots and testing conditions. In that event, Bruce Golison's J/70 Midlife Crisis won the Satariano Boat of the Week trophy, while PHRF Boat of the Week went to Gator, skippered by Long Beach sailor Todd Wheatley, who has since passed. The Ely family and Elyxir received the Kent Golison Family Trophy for the second year in a row, and Aussie Airwaves won the Travel Trophy for venturing the furthest to compete.

"We'll see you in 2022!" Mueller declared, noting the June 24 to 26, 2022 dates, and promised to make up for lost time, saying, "It will be three times the fun!" -- Betsy Crowfoot

The Cruising Association Launches 180-Day Visa Campaign
The Cruising Association has today launched its campaign to reduce the impact of Brexit on British small boat cruisers who have traditionally explored the coasts and inland waterways of Europe in sailing and motor boats.

There's a particular focus on the Netherlands, Greece, Spain and Portugal where the CA is lobbying for a 180-day cruising visa separate from the Schengen 90-day visa. The CA is also exploring opportunities for a simplified application process to the existing long-term tourist visas available for France and Sweden.

Along with other groups such as second home owners, professional musicians, academics, etc. the CA has previously tried to engage with MPs and Ministers on this issue but, thus far, and with the COVID pandemic taking priority, there has been little will to address the 90/180 problem in the corridors of Westminster.

EU rules allow individual EU countries to issue long-term visas and a recent report that the Government is now considering addressing the problems for professional musicians is encouraging. The CA is making the case that any solution should also cover sailing and motorboat cruising.

In a well-crafted letter from the CA's Patron, Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, addressed to The Rt Hon Oliver Dowden CBE MP, Secretary of State, Department of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, Sir Robin puts forward the CA's argument that the Schengen 90 days in 180 limit, that now applies to UK citizens, will cause severe difficulties and is unfair.

Each EU member country can set its own policy for visas and permits of more than 90 days, hence the CA has its 'local' teams working out the best strategy for each country.

49th BVI Spring Regatta Postponed Until 2022
Tortola, British Virgin Islands: The 49th BVI Spring Regatta and Sailing Festival, which was scheduled for March 29 to April 4, 2021, has been postponed until 2022 following deep consideration by all entities involved. The BVI Spring Regatta Committee, after discussions with the BVI Government Ministry of Health, concluded that the postponement was in the best interest for the safety of all participants, volunteers and the wider BVI community.

Following in the steps of many of the major Caribbean regattas that have also been postponed, the Spring Regatta was anticipating offering world class racing and camaraderie for all participants.

The postponement of the event is a financial blow to the non-profit entity which organizes this internationally respected sailing event, as well as to the BVI community, which typically enjoys a positive economic impact from the BVI Spring Regatta and Sailing Festival of approximately $4 million each year. This loss to the local economy these past two years due to the pandemic has been devastating, particularly to the yachting sector.

The Regatta Committee would also like to thank all of our sponsors during these unpredictable times. Their continued support enables us to move forward and take the event to an even higher level of racing and participation. The Committee would also like to extend a 'thank you' to the participants who had planned to attend.

The 2022 BVI Spring Regatta & Sailing Festival is scheduled for March 28- April 3, 2022.

It was anything but a dull Monday morning in Makkum. While most of the villagers were still sleeping, at 06:00 AM the yard of KM Yachtbuilders was already abuzz with activity. This is the day when the expedition vessel Pelagic 77 was launched. Her two carbon masts were set immediately after the launch. Her official name is now 'Vinson of Antarctica', after the highest mountain on the Antarctic continent.

Pelagic

The vessel has been under construction at KM Yachtbuilders since early in the summer of 2019 and work will be continuing for a few weeks after the launch on the finishing, commissioning and of course the sea trials. This will take place on the North Sea and the first trip will be to Norway. After the summer, the crew plans to sail to South America, ending at Puerto Williams in Chile, the southernmost inhabited place in the world.

The Pelagic 77 'Vinson of Antarctica', with a centreboard and fixed keel box, is a schooner with a modern design and two carbon masts so that the sail area is distributed and all sail systems, such as winches and jib rollers, can still be operated by hand. At 150 hp, the two Yanmar engines provide ample power. When they're not on deck, guests on board can also relax in the comfortable living area of the large pilothouse or in the stern galley. In the foreship there are six double cabins and two communal toilets and showers. The style of the interior is kept light with bamboo furniture. The vessel will be used for charter trips from Puerto Williams in South Chile as well as for private purposes.

At the request of her overseas buyer, the Spirit 111 was designed and built in-house by Spirit Yachts to be one of the most environmentally friendly sailing superyachts ever created. The sloop-rigged yacht is also the largest single-masted wooden yacht to be built in the UK since Shamrock V in the 1930s.

Spirit 111

Spirit Yachts worked collaboratively with leading marine and automotive suppliers to deliver on the owner's eco brief. A Torqeedo electric propulsion system using a 100kW motor will propel the yacht silently for up to 40nm at eight knots from battery power alone. Whilst sailing, the propulsion system will regenerate the four BMW lithium battery banks by rotating the propeller shaft whilst the yacht is under sail. All power-consuming components have been carefully selected to be highly efficient and will use minimal energy without impacting performance or comfort.

Using electric propulsion to regenerate the batteries whilst sailing, the yacht will be able to operate for up to four days at anchor without having to plug into shore power or start the two onboard generators. When the yacht crosses the Atlantic, as long as there is adequate wind, she will not need to consume any fossil fuels.

The Spirit 111 is also one of few superyachts capable of cruising without professional crew. Energy efficient Lewmar hydraulic deck hardware and OneSails GBR (East) 4T FORTE sails made from recyclable materials will be fitted to a Hall Spars carbon fibre mast and in-boom furling to facilitate short-handed sailing.

With no requirements for crew accommodation, guests have the choice of two double ensuite aft cabins or a starboard side double VIP cabin. The forward cabin holds the spacious master suite, complete with curved sofas built into the side of the hull, double bed and ensuite. All heads have rounded, solid timber sinks integrated into the worktop and power showers.

Responding to demand for a day sailor designed for coastal or lake sailing, Spirit Yachts is currently building a new Spirit 30. The yacht has the timeless lines of all Spirit's modern classic sailing yachts, with long overhangs and uncluttered decks. Her light displacement (1.4tonnes) and performance rig deliver optimum cruising speeds or the opportunity for competitive racing.

Spirit 30

Spirit Yachts managing director Nigel Stuart commented, "The Spirit 30 was designed following several approaches about a versatile day sailor, particularly suited to European lake sailing. The project also presented a good opportunity for us to challenge some of the products we currently use in construction and look for more eco-friendly replacements."

The hull of the Spirit 30 was built using Sipo Mahogany ring frames and Douglas fir planking, all from sustainably managed forests. Instead of a fibreglass external skin, Spirit Yachts used flax material, which was bonded to the hull using a new bio-based epoxy by PRO-SET®.

The Spirit 30 currently in build houses a Torqeedo Cruise 4.0 FP electric drive system powered by lithium ion batteries (2 x 48-5000) and a Torqeedo 650W battery charger. Durable, smooth and sustainable Lignia decking gives way to a Sipo Mahogany cockpit with tiller steering. Rigging is nitronic rod rigging complemented by carbon fibre mast and spars. All sail controls and halyards are led through the mast to below deck and controlled from one central electric winch via clutches forward of the centre thwart.
