Isabelle Joschke (MACSF) has completed her round-the-world outside the race
a keel ram failure on her IMOCA 60 has completed her round the world passage today out of the race when she sailed back into Les Sables d'Olonne today 107 days 21 hours after the race start on November 8th. She made a 10 day technical stop in Salvador de Bahia, Brazil to consolidate the keel problem with her technical team. The 43 year old Franco-German skipper has shown great determination to 'close the loop' and finish her first ever circumnavigation. She passed the Nouche Sud buoy at 10:34hrs UTC this morning

Until she was forced to abandon her Vendee Globe Joschke was sailing a great race, comfortably inside the top ten and seemingly with the potential to climb higher and higher up the rankings.

To finish in the top 10 was the original sporting goal for Isabelle Joschke who joined the IMOCA class in 2017 and she was well within that goal when she was forced to retire.

Despite her suffering with the cold in the south she impressed race watchers with her smooth trajectories and high average speeds. But on 3rd January just 48 hours before rounding Cape Horn for her first time, she suffers a failure of her keel ram. Employing an emergency ram to centre the keel she races on with her keel fixed in the middle. But five days later in the middle of a big depression east of Argentina the system fails and she is left with her keel swinging in its axis. She abandons immediately to be helped with the safest routing out of the system. It takes her 16 days of careful sailing at reduced speeds to reach Salvador de Bahia, Brasil. After her technical stopover of about ten days she set sail again on February 5th agreeing to sail in company with her friend and rival Sam Davies to return to Les Sables d'Olonne.

Tawera and Whirlwind claim victories on day one of the Mastercard Superyacht Regatta

Mastercard Superyacht Regatta The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron's Mastercard Superyacht Regatta got underway today in Auckland with two spectacular races on the pristine waters of the Hauraki Gulf.

There are seven superyachts taking part this week, and the City of Sails turned on perfect sailing weather for the opening day of the regatta, sponsored by Auckland Unlimited, with sunshine and a solid 16-18 knot breeze on the course.

The first race got underway at 11am and the course was a large 15.8 nautical mile windward / leeward track between Rangitoto Island and Gulf Harbour Peninsula. All of the yachts competing are of different sizes and design, which means the starts are staggered based on ORC ratings. The 'smallest' boat in the fleet, 28 metre Tawera, was the first to get underway, followed by Aschanti IV, Whirlwind, Miss Silver, Catalina, Sassafras and lastly the sleek and speedy Silvertip, all departing three minutes apart from each other as is the format for this regatta.

Although they were the final boat off the start-line, Silvertip quickly looked to be in race mode, with all crew having their legs over the side and the boat making up solid ground on the rest of the fleet to be the first around mark one. Hot on her heels was Miss Silver, who was only 70 metres behind at the first mark. The rest of the fleet began to fall in line as they were all kites up on the stretch to the second mark. One of the highlights included a near flawless gybe around mark two by the experienced crew on Sassafras, something they will no doubt watch back tonight.

Silvertip - built here in New Zealand by Yachting Developments - proved they are a force to reckon with by crossing the finish line first, but it was the New Zealand based Tawera that claimed the spoils in race one - winning the race on handicap by a one minute and 43 second margin on corrected time, a brilliant start to the regatta for the team. Miss Silver claimed second overall, followed by Sassafras, Whirlwind, Silvertip, Aschanti IV and Catalina.

After two races on the first day, it is Mike Mahoney's Tawera who takes home the spoils and the overall regatta lead.

Race Day two - sponsored by BOAT International - will get underway tomorrow at 11am, with one longer race scheduled. -- Andrew Delves

Seahorse Sailor Of The Month
This month's nominees:

Isabelle Joschke (MACSF) has completed her round-the-world outside the race Kojiro Shiraishi (JPN)
Shiraishi started the Vendee Globe on a new design but with the stated intention to finish the race first and then see where he was in the final results. Such humility and openness are rare in big events that require very large sponsorship to take part in. The very open approach is partly to respect his mentor, the late BOC class winner and Tokyo taxi driver Yukoh Tada. Dr Mori, the founder of his sponsor DMG, also respected someone who told it straight. And Kojiro did finish

Isabelle Joschke (MACSF) has completed her round-the-world outside the race Clarisse Cremer (FRA)
Zero to hero... well, not quite as Cremer did have some modest ocean-racing history before she was signed up by Banque Populaire for a new approach to a race they had already won. Cremer learned from the best - Armel Le Cleac'h - but did not waste the chance she had been given. A social media star before the race, she employed all that experience to maximum effect. Cremer certainly raced well. But she did even better at interesting a massive new audience in ocean racing

Isabelle Joschke (MACSF) has completed her round-the-world outside the race Last Month's winner:
Dan Bernasconi (NZL)
If you're gonna win, win big - this month's winner holds the America's Cup aloft in 2017. 'Remarkable vision and courage in design' - Guy Haworth; 'Go for the tech guys, Kenny's got good boots!' - Simon Strauss; 'Daring and visionary - Dan has opened up an entirely new art of sailing' - Andrew Bellamy; 'The hand behind the throne?' - Eric de Turckheim; 'Dan Bernasconi is simply the man - one of the smartest guys in the room' - Blue Robinson.

Sir Ben Ainslie: End of our America's Cup challenge hurts - but we'll be back
The past couple of days have not been much fun. I woke up at around 5am on Wednesday and for a minute I thought we were still right in the thick of it. Then it hit me again: we are out of the running for this America's Cup.

It is going to take a while to process, but that is sport. If you are going to compete at the highest level, you have to accept the risk that you may not win, and if you do not it will really hurt.

Like all Cup campaigns it has been full-on, not just the past six months but the past four years. That said, it has been a huge privilege to have been hosted here in this beautiful country. Given the challenges the world has been facing, that opportunity is not lost on us. Thank you, New Zealand.

Aegean 600: A new offshore sailing race
Athens, Greece: From July 4-10, 2021, the Hellenic Offshore Racing Club (HORC) in Greece will organize a new 600 nautical mile offshore yacht race. This race - the AEGEAN 600 - is designed by sailors for sailors in which the sporting challenge will meet the legendary beauty of the Aegean islands. It is the first time the one sea favored by poets, painters and philosophers through the ages, will host such a great offshore sailing event that has both athletic and environmental symbolism, as the message the contestants will convey is "Let's Save Our Seas".

With the support of the environmental organization HELMEPA, HORC aims to organize an event with the smallest possible ecological footprint. Therefore, actions will be taken to educate and inform the entries about marine pollution before the start of the race. Olympic Marine will host the participating boats and be part of this effort as one of the fastest growing marinas in Greece, situated just north of Sounio, around 70 km away south-east of Athens center.

The legends of Aegean sailing are evident from the very beginning of the race, with Cape Sounion at the start against the backdrop of the Temple of Poseidon. The boats will sail for Milos, the home of the Venus de Milo, which is now in the Louvre in Paris. Surrounded by Cycladic white, they will reach the scenic Caldera of Santorini, where the white of the houses blends with the volcanic rock in a sea of blue, creating unique contrasts and images. They will continue towards the southernmost island of the Aegean Sea, Kassos, and leaving Karpathos on the left, the goddess Athena's birthplace and the home of Prometheus, will reach the Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes. The course will continue towards scenic Kos and Kalymnos, the island of sponge divers, while on the way the sailors will meet dolphins and many beautiful small islands, each with its own history.

The fleet will then sail next to the colorful islands of Pharmakonisi and Agathonisi, and continue to the Icarian Sea, a sea that offers lots of sailing excitement. The sailors will meet Patmos, the island of Saint John and the Cave of the Apocalypse, and will head to cosmopolitan Mykonos and Delos, the birthplace of Apollo. The last islands of the route will be Giaros and Kea. Finally, the contestants will look West on to the Temple of Poseidon and this will mark the end of the sailing adventure and the race.

This event is being run concurrently with the inaugural edition of another important offshore racing event, the ORC Double Handed European Championship.

Harbour Master Sailing Challenge
Over the top of GB, Muckle Flugga, Shetland. Click on image to enlarge.

Harbour Master Sailing Challenge Retired businessman Mark Ashley-Miller, 58, is attempting to visit every Harbour Master in the UK.

Starting out from Dartmouth in 2019, Mark has now sailed 4,000 nautical miles, visited 130 harbours and interviewed 110 Harbour Masters. Helming his 34ft boat "Good Dog" in a clockwise direction around GB, he is asking each Harbour Master a couple of questions to create a unique record of them, their harbours and their work. Harbours have included Cornish fishing villages, tidal ports far up the Bristol Channel, harbours guarded by castles in Wales, urban container ports, Scottish submarine bases, tiny National Trust islands, remote Scottish ferry terminals, harbours which don't allow yachts (!) and far away semi-military harbours. He has met Harbour Masters on fishing boats, in corporate city offices, at busy ferry terminals and even one welcoming him with a bottle of malt whisky! As well as sailing to their offices, he has travelled by train, bus and even hitch-hiked to meet them. He has seen the work of engineers such as Telford, Brunel and the Stevensons and has learnt enough maritime history to fill a book.

All this in support of Seafarers UK. Raising money for, and awareness of, this brilliant charity which supports so many seafarers and their families. During Covid-19 this work is even more significant with 300,000 seafarers trapped on their ships worldwide.

FAQs:
How many Harbour Masters are there in the UK? Circa 300 official Harbour Masters plus deputies, assistants, part time, seasonal and volunteers. Also Dock, Pier and Slipway Masters work in a range of commercial, trust, council and private harbours.

What route is Mark taking?
Turning to starboard out of Dartmouth, Mark has followed the coastline with passages to the Isles of Scilly, Bristol, Liverpool, the Clyde, most of the inner and outer Hebrides, Orkney and over the top of Shetland as far as Lossiemouth.

How long will the challenge take?
It is estimated to take five years depending on the weather. 2021 will see Mark sail down the east coast of the country from Aberdeenshire ending up in St Katharine's Dock London. 2022 the south coast and 2023 Ireland.

Allen Bros is to close its foundry, resulting in the discontinuation of its YS range of fittings.

The hardware manufacturer says while the YS range has been very successful for many decades, sales have fallen recently as boat builders switched to a more modern alternative.

In addition, the company that completed the polishing and anodising of the fittings has fallen victim to Covid-19 and despite an extensive search, Allen has been unable to source a new supplier who can meet its quality criteria.

"The investment required in the foundry, anodising and polishing could not be justified for a shrinking demand," said a spokesperson. "Sadly, we have therefore had to make the decision to discontinue this range."

Some of the YS items will now be manufactured by Allen using new methods and under a different name.

The new AY range will be manufactured using Allen's VMC machines which the company says will produce more accurate and reliable products.

Bespoke designs can also be designed and machined in-house to a customer's specification.

HanseYachts booked a record amount of new orders in the first quarter of the new 2020/2021 financial year. The accumulated volume of new orders reached EUR 62.7 million, which is about 87% higher than the year-ago figure of EUR 33.6 million. With a Groupwide order backlog of EUR 106.7 million (PY: EUR 71.5 million, +48 %) after the first three months of the new financial year, the capacity of the production lines for sailing and motor yachts is already filled up into the early summer of 2021 and the capacity of the French catamaran manufacturer is filled up into the year 2022, according to the production schedule of HanseYachts AG.

The continued high levels of unit sales in northern Europe, especially in Germany, the Netherlands and Norway, are likewise heartening. Spain and France are highly promising sales markets in southern Europe. Moreover, positive impetus is coming from Turkey and the boat market in the United States is solid.

The first online edition of the Helsinki International Boat Show (Vene Bat) attracted more than 52,300 'visitors' during its 10-day run (February 12-21). The event featured 150 exhibitors and was visited almost 64,500 times.

Various boat stores organised virtual events during Vene 21 Bat and many companies marketed their boats and equipment online. The boating industry was visible in multiple channels.

"We all are waiting for Helsinki International Boat Show Vene 22 Bat which will be held at Messukeskus Helsinki next year," says sales group manager Juha Kuusla from Messukeskus. "This year's online event will lay the foundation for next year's hybrid event, where in addition to the Vene 22 Bat event held at Messukeskus, we will produce online content and companies will also be able to present online.

"We are now collecting feedback from both visitors and exhibitors and developing the upcoming hybrid event based on it. We have worked hard and also learned a lot. This exceptional time has encouraged us to take a big step forward in digitalisation."

During the night of February 18 to 19, Groupe Beneteau detected a malware intrusion affecting some of its servers. As a precautionary measure, all of the information systems were disconnected in order to prevent it from spreading.

Several production units, notably in France, will have to slow down or stop their production activities for a few days.

Accompanied by experts and the relevant authorities, the Group's teams are fully mobilized to address the consequences of this attack. Firstly, the deployment of a backup application and systems will enable activities to start up again securely, but in degraded mode. Alongside this, investigations will continue moving forward with a view to fully restoring all of the Group's systems.

At this stage, the impacts of this incident on EBIT are covered by the insurance policies put in place by the Group.

Groupe Beneteau's management team would like to thank its customers and suppliers for their understanding and support, as well as all of the Group's teams for their responsiveness and dedication.
