The handbrake holding back Sir Ben Ainslie's revival hopes
Sir Ben Ainslie has a major handbrake holding back his hopes of reviving his struggling Prada Cup final campaign.

Down 4-0 and with Italian rival Luna Rossa needing only three more wins to secure entry into the March's America's Cup final against Emirates Team New Zealand, Ainslie needs to find some quick answers.

But there is no magic wand in the way of significant boat modifications as the series takes an extended break with the Covid crisis wiping out the next scheduled races on Wednesday. He has made his big choices and has to largely live with them.

The strict rules say that the configurations declared to the measurers last Monday for the best-of-13 Prada Cup final series must remain. -- Duncan Johnstone

America's Cup Event Ltd will be working with the Authorities and relevant agencies over the next few days to work through the ongoing ramifications.

CORUM L'Epargne confirms participation in The Ocean Race Europe
The CORUM L'Epargne Sailing Team, led by skipper Nicolas Troussel, has confirmed it will take part in the inaugural edition of The Ocean Race Europe this spring, with its new generation IMOCA.

The Ocean Race Europe is a new event, created by the organisers of The Ocean Race as part of a 10-year programme of racing through 2031. The European event will run every four years (2021, 2025, 2029), in the gaps between the around the world editions of The Ocean Race (2022-23, 2026-27, 2030-31), to provide a continuous racing programme.

This inaugural edition of The Ocean Race Europe will see two fleets in action - the technology-driven IMOCA class and the one-design VO65s. The race course will see several point-scoring legs between iconic European cities, with the route to be confirmed soon.

Nicolas Troussel is a double-winner in the prestigious Solitaire du Figaro and has numerous championships and podiums in all of the major offshore races to his credit.

New Zealander Wins Australian Historical 18s Championship
Click on image for photo gallery.

Historical 18s Championship The New Zealand 18ft Skiff fleet may not be coming to contest the 2021 JJ Giltinan world 18ft Skiff Championship on Sydney Harbour in March, but there is one Kiwi sailor who will be at the JJs, and who has already taken out a major 18 Footer championship in Australia this month.

He is Josh Porebski, from Worser Bay Boating Club, Wellington, who is presently sailing with Sean Langman and Ed Powys on Noakesailing in the Australian 18 Footer League's 2020-2021 Season fleet, and who last Saturday became the 2020-2021 Australian Historical 18s champion when he skippered 'Yendys' to victory in the championship, which was conducted by the Sydney Flying Squadron.

Along with Josh, the 8-man Yendys team included two former world 18ft Skiff champions from the late 1970s-early 1980s, Andrew Buckland and Don Buckley.

Andrew (as sheet hand) and Don (in the bow) won five consecutive JJ Giltinan world, Australian and NSW championships with Iain Murray on the famous Color 7 skiffs.

Other members of the Yendys team were Russell Debney, Grant Wakefield, Wes Batty, Pierre Jubien and Adrian Dunphy.

The Yendys team led for most of the final race of the championship on Saturday, but completed the North-East course in second place behind The Mistake, skippered by John Winning, which grabbed the lead on the final run home. -- Frank Quealey, Australian 18 Footers League Ltd.

Sea Levels Rising Faster than Expected: New Study
Sea levels around the world are rising faster than current models predicted, according to a new study by a group of European researchers. A result of warming temperatures and climate change, the rising sea levels could result in massive coastal flooding and property damage.

The new study was just published in Ocean Science, the journal of the European Geosciences Union. It considered more data to revise previous estimates made by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change that predicted that seal levels will rise about 39 inches by the end of this century. That prediction was based on data going back 150 years.

The new study went back farther, considering date for several centuries. And it suggests that sea levels will rise an additional ten inches by the end of the century if carbon emissions are not curbed and the earth continues to heat.

Another recent study said that ice melting from two glaciers in Antarctica, Pine Island and Thwaites, has already contributed to a five percent rise in global sea level. Now those glaciers are on the verge of breaking apart, which would add much more water to the world's oceans.

Alinghi crowned Sailing Team of the Year at SUI Sailing Awards 2021
COVID-19 required that the ceremony for the 7th SUI Sailing Awards would take place in the form of an online broadcast on Saturday February 13, starting at 8pm. In keeping with, and in order to respect, the necessary public health measures, the SUI's Master of Ceremonies had previously toured the awards' winners to present the prizes in each of the five categories: male and female sailor, junior sailor, team and project.

These Awards, organised every two years by Swiss Sailing and Skippers magazine, reward the best performers competing under the Swiss flag during the relevant two years - in this case 2019 and 2020 - as well as recognising commitment to the sport.

Nominated alongside Team Tilt Sailing and Roesti Sailing Team in the "Sailing Team" category, Alinghi was named the winner following a public vote (counting for 30% of the decision) and nominations from a jury composed of five sailing professionals.

The Voiles de Saint-Tropez: format and dates of the 2021 edition confirmed
Voiles de Saint-Tropez... from Saturday, September 25 to Saturday, October 9 - with a revamped format. All classic boats will race the first week from September 25, at the same time as the modern boats measuring up to and around 20 meters. The second week, from Sunday, October 3, being exclusively devoted to the larger modern boats, which will also have the benefit of an additional day of racing.

For the first week, open to all classic boats and modern boats up to and around 20 meters (depending on the class) the program remains unchanged with racing starting for the modern classes from Monday, September 27 and joined by the classics from Tuesday 28. The separation of the larger modern boats allows all race starts to be held in front of Saint-Tropez village. The larger modern yachts will be present in the port and the gulf of Saint-Tropez from Sunday 3 to Saturday 9 October, with - and this is a novelty of this edition - an additional day of racing, regattas scheduled from Tuesday to Saturday.

The new format spread over two weeks gives the Société Nautique de Saint-Tropez the opportunity to specifically meet the expectations of the boats, according to their size and potential. But beyond the sporting aspects, the two-week course also makes it possible to manage more effectively the flow of people, participants and spectators. Using experience gained from a successful 2020 edition, in a context particularly tense in view of the global health epidemic, the SNST has shown excellent responsiveness in its implementation of a pro-active sanitary protocol that allowed the validation and holding of the event, despite the numerous cancellations elsewhere. -- Maguelonne Turcat

A Winter Series For The Summer
Now is the winter of our discontent... which is why the Seldén SailJuice Winter Series is being extended into this spring and summer. With Covid forcing the cancellation or postponement of all but one of the scheduled events, the results of the successfully run Datchet Flyer last December do not add up to a series worthy of the name.

So series co-organisers Andy Rice and Simon Lovesey have agreed with title sponsor Seldén Mast to continue to run the series through to a concluding event at Rutland Water, the rescheduled John Merricks Tiger Trophy on the last weekend of August.

Simon has been spearheading the continuation of sailing wherever possible within Covid guidelines, via his non-for-profit organisation RestartSailing which he established during National Lockdown #1 in spring 2020. Simon said: "We are working with sailing clubs that are keen to make things happen wherever it is possible to do so in a safe, Covid-compliant manner. If any club or class wants us to help them put on a sustainable, profitable, fun and safe event, we're ready to talk with them."

So if you want to find out more, either as a competing sailor, class or sailing club, please contact Simon on:

The following events are in the Seldén SailJuice Winter Series (Summer Edition!):

Alton Water, Suffolk, 27-28 March 2021
Paignton Open for Single Handers (P.O.S.H.), Paington SC, 8-9 May 2021

Mills Design vision for [this] design is to be the first Mini-Maxi sized foiler capable of coastal racing; a robust simple platform able to foil in winds below 10 knots true, and capable of passing the various requirements for entry into mainstream race events, such as WS Offshore Special Regs categorisation including stability. The need for limited Archimedean sailing in sub-optimal wind speeds and increased contact with the sea surface in a wave pattern leads to a hull shape differentiated from its AC75 siblings by greater concern for wetted surface. Powered controls and winches assisted by a flight augmentation system reduce the burdens on the 5 man crew, allowing the helm to focus on steering without also having to directly control ride height.

Now that the project is moving at full speed, the design team is focusing on development and optimisation of the design geometry and systems. Over the next three months the hull, deck, and crew configuration will be finalised prior to the commencement of construction. Builder selection is at an advanced stage, guided by experienced Project Manager Micky Costa who fills a crucial role linking the designers, builder, and sailing team to produce a reliable, simple and effective sailing machine. Stand by for updates as the project progresses towards flying over the Mediterranean in 2022.

----------------------------------------------

The story of the KattuMaram (catamaran in the Tamil language) began in 2015: Alain Duvivier, an experienced monohull racer, decided to design an exciting but accessible multihull. The specifications limit the size to 32 feet in length, impose a folding system in order to fit into a standard marina slip, and of course be equipped with foils.

The project was entrusted to VPLP. In 2016, a full-scale wooden model was built and construction began for real in 2017, with a few of the specifications already evolving: construction in Nomex carbon rather than glass/vinylester, and Z foils as opposed to the initial C-shaped foils. Launch is scheduled for October 12th at Pornic, on France's Atlantic coast - and of course, we plan to test this speed machine for you very soon!
