Shanghai, Dubai, Goodbye?
You really don't need to be Inspector Jacques Clouseau (the French spelling), to join the dots on where this is all heading and the absolute key to everything is out there in plain sight, every day sailing around the Hauraki Gulf - the AC75 class. Let me start with that.

What we have racing today is a development class of boats. They look spectacular and other-worldly - just what the Cup needs. But if the class continued into another cycle, which it surely must, the next generation of these boats will make the current ones look like combine harvesters. The generation on will be slicker, sharper, better detailed and work better. That's evolution. That's what development classes do. Compare an International Moth of Rohan Veal's era to Paul Goodison's of today and it's a different boat. Completely different.

But the key is that this boat concept can sail anywhere in the world. If the Defenders, whoever that may be, decided to chase the money and opt for Abu Dhabi or Qingdao then no problem with designing the boats to suit the conditions. What we've seen in Auckland when the boats go displacement in light winds, is utterly boring. But if the mean wind was 5-8 knots, the boats would de designed for those conditions and be more refined than a Stradivarius violin. They would be epic yachts that would probably disintegrate in 18 knots of breeze but in the lower wind ranges would still be capable of punching out eye-watering speeds. In short, this design is versatile. And it's exciting.

So now we have a class of boat that can race anywhere in the world, the options are wide open for the Defending yacht club to select whatever venue is commercially the best option.

Peter de Savary backs Ineos Team UK to beat Team New Zealand for Auld Mug
A former America's Cup challenger and multi-millionaire businessman predicts Ineos Team UK will not only defeat Luna Rossa in the upcoming Prada Cup final - but that Sir Ben Ainslie's syndicate will go one step further and beat Team New Zealand for the Auld Mug.

In an interview with The Times, 76-year-old entrepreneur and former America's Cup sailor Peter de Savary says Team UK's remarkable comeback after a disastrous World Series in December is proof that they can break Britain's 170-year drought.

Ainslie and Co failed to win a single race - and stay on their foils in the lighter breeze - in December's four-day regatta before sweeping all before them in the Prada Cup round robin to book a spot in the final against the Italians.

The best-of-13 race Prada Cup final starts on Saturday, with the winner advancing to next month's America's Cup match against defender Team New Zealand.

If I were a betting man, I would not put my money on New Zealand; I would put a lot of money on Ben Ainslie," De Savary told The Times.

"I was obviously concerned for Ben when I saw the performance before Christmas, but I was in no doubt he would put things right and of course he has done that.

UK National Swallow Class
The National Swallow Class is on the move this year with an exciting new website showcasing the class and plans afoot to lend out the few boats not currently active to prospective newcomers. With a new builder about to be appointed and a team planning to sponsor new boats the future for the class is rosy.

The Swallow is a wonderfully responsive boat to sail and Itchenor Sailing Club, in the outstandingly beautiful Chichester Harbour, is a delightful place to race them. With the new website at www.swallowclass.org the rest of the world will be able to discover what racing one of these modern classics is all about.

Some parts of the new site will be useful to newcomers, whilst others will act as the first point of contact for our regulars to gather information before a day's sailing. The new Crew-Search facility will allow crews to get in contact with those looking for crew and will be a great benefit to the class.

The Itchenor Swallow Fleet has always been lucky in that most of the boats race regularly but looking to the future, like all classes, it is necessary to keep bringing newcomers in. There are a few underused boats in race order and ready to go that the class plans to make available to potential newcomers to use for a midsummer programme. Details are still being finalised and will be announced later this month.

Add Sail Windjammer to the list of cruise companies that are shutting down for good due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

The one-ship firm, which operated a historic, nearly-100-year-old sailing vessel called Mandalay, has posted a notice on its website and social media pages saying it's out of business.

"We cannot see a path forward for our operation," the company said in the notice. "COVID-19 has been a devastation to our business that we don't see a way to recover from."

In the notice, Sail Windjammer noted that Mandalay - a large, three-masted schooner that can hold up to 72 passengers - recently suffered damage that needed repair, adding to the company's financial burdens.

"We gathered all repair and maintenance estimates, costs and our financial position to evaluate how we could move forward financially," the company said. "We have tried everything possible to figure out how to continue this past week."

Sail Windjammer added that "not qualifying for any small business loans along with 10 months of no income has crippled our operations."

Like many cruise companies, Sail Windjammer hadn't operated any departures since March 2020 due to the pandemic.
