Less than a thousand miles to go...
From the head of the fleet where the skippers jibe to those getting ready to cross Cape Horn, everyone is busy this Sunday evening. State of play.

In this race against the clock where every maneuver counts , we were on the lookout for the maneuver of Charlie Dalin, current 2 nd . Apivia, which was heading east, jibed for a northerly course at 3:30 p.m. PST. Now she is heading on port tack and is making more than 19 knots in the early evening. More than 500 miles to the east, Yannick Bestaven (Maître CoQ IV, 5th) also gybed in the afternoon to head east, north-east.

Located between Charlie Dalin and Yannick Bestaven, Louis Burton took the lead again on Sunday morning and he kept it tonight. At 8 pm, it was nevertheless slower than APIVIA (17.9 knots against 19.3 knots).

For his part, Thomas Ruyant (4 th , LinkedOut), which spins due north, is the one who went closest off the Azores, 40 miles from the island of Santa Maria. Finally, Giancarlo Pedote gets closer to Damien Seguin: only 18 miles separated the two men at 8 p.m. (French time).

The equator in sight for Jeremie Beyou

The skipper of Charal is smiling. Under a bright sun, Jeremie Beyou covered more than 370 miles this Sunday. Enough to allow it to get closer to the equator. He should cross it in the night. 14 th , Charal continues to rebuild his lead over Romain Attanasio (13 th ) which is still stuck in the pot-au-noir.

Huusela and Barrier, the last Cape Horners

As of Monday morning, there will be no more skippers in the South Pacific. Ari Huusela (STARK) and Alexia Barrier (TSE-4myplanet) will be done in the evening. Note that the Finn returned to the sailor, stuck in a soft zone: only 19 miles separate him at 8 p.m. (French time). They should pass Cape Horn around midnight.

Isabelle Joschke, arrival scheduled for the evening

For Isabelle Joschke, the Vendee Globe is already over. MACSF should moor at the port of Salvador de Bahia this early evening. The sailor was forced to retire on Saturday January 9 after the breakage of her keel jack.

Top ten at Jan. 24, 2021 - 5 p.m. (UTC)

INEOS TEAM UK Win The Prada Cup Round Robins
INEOS TEAM UK stays unbeaten after what was probably the closest race seen so far on the AC75s, with 9 lead changes throughout the nail biting race against Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli.

With that result, Sir Ben Ainslie’s team won their the fifth race in a row in the Round Robins. Upon finishing the ‘ghost race’ start successfully it took them to 6 points, enough to qualify directly to the PRADA Cup final.

The Italian Challenger of Record fought until the last jibe of the last leg of a race that was the perfect definition of match race which saw the top speeds exceeding the 50 knot mark for the first time in racing.

INEOS TEAM UK now have three full weeks to develop their boat and getting ready for the next race, whereas Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli have only 6 days before to fine tuning their AC75 before the next race against American Magic who are in a race against time to repair their boat and get back to the startline. The Semi-final - the first knockout phase of the PRADA Cup - starts on Friday 29 January and by then the pressure ramps up dramatically.

Exciting career opportunities
A+T Instruments A+T is the rapidly growing manufacturer of high performance and beautifully engineered instruments for the superyacht and racing markets, see www.AandTinstruments.com.

We have continued to expand through the Covid period and are looking to build our sales and marketing team with two senior positions:-

Technical Support and Sales; a good technical grasp of marine electronics and good knowledge of superyachts and race yachts is needed, with opportunities to visit and sail at major regattas world-wide.

Sales manager; to expand our now well established footprint on over 400 superyacht and raceboats to the wider market of refit yards, brokers, new-build yards and electronics dealers. Some sales experience and knowledge of the market necessary, such as ex yacht broker, but not deep technical understanding.

Based primarily from Lymington, UK, these both offer competive salaries and the chance quickly to build senior management roles in an innovative and growing marine company.

18ft Skiffs NSW Championship, Races 2 and 3
Click on image for photo gallery.

18ft Skiffs Sydney Harbour: The recently crowned NSW champion tech2 18ft Skiff team totally dominated a great day's racing in races 2 and 3 of the Australian 18ft Skiff Championship on Sydney Harbour today.

In North East winds ranging from 18-25 knots, the tech2 team of Jack Macartney, Charlie Wyatt and Lewis Brake, was brilliant and now have a record of three wins from the three races sailed so far in the championship.

The highly-rated Smeg team of Michael Coxon, Ricky Bridge and Trent Barnabas pushed tech2 to the limit in the early race today but, after leading narrowly at the first windward mark, was unable to hold back the powerful tech2 challenge.

That said the racing between the two champion crews was sensational and had the spectators cheering for more as the skiffs became airborne on the wild spinnaker runs.

tech2 won today's first race (Race 2 of the championship) by just 15s from Smeg. Finport Finance (Keagan York, Matt Stenta, Phil Marshall) was a further 1m6s back in third place, followed by Andoo (Steve Thomas), Noakesailing (Sean Langman) and Winning Group (John Winning Jr.).

In the latter race, which was sailed in a freshening breeze, tech2's winning margin over Smeg was 35s. Andoo (Steve Thomas, Cam Gundy, Rhys Mara) was a further 11s back in third place, followed by Noakesailing, Finport Finance and Shaw and Partners Financial Services (Jim Colley).

At the end of the day's racing, tech2 leads the points table on three points, followed by Smeg on six, Noakesailing on 12, Andoo and Finport Finance are equal on 14, and Winning Group is in sixth place on 17 points. -- Frank Quealey, Australian 18 Footers League Ltd.

Races 4 and 5 of the Australian Championship, will be conducted next Sunday.

Taking care of home - 11th Hour Racing
11th Hour Racing We know more about the Moon and Mars than we do about the deep ocean... but we know enough to do a better job of looking after it

The spirit and values of ocean racing - leadership, resilience, tenacity and collaboration - are exactly what’s needed to address the health of our oceans. The deep ocean might seem to divide us but beneath the surface, it’s actually what connects us to each other across continents and to the complex web of ecosystems that sustain and support all life on this planet. In this era of massive, manmade environmental impact we don’t seem to know what is at stake. Now is the time to find out and take action.

That was the take-away message from the third edition of The Ocean Race Summits, broadcast online from Newport, Rhode Island, U.S. and sponsored by 11th Hour Racing, where some of the world’s leading sailors, scientists and changemakers discussed the urgent need for greater global interest, engagement and investment in the field of ocean science and exploration.

While the need to act is urgent, the situation is far from hopeless. In fact, as the oceanographer Philippe Cousteau explained during the Summit, we already have most of the technology we need to transition to a sustainable future. We just need the collective willpower and resolve to make it happen.

Paradise City
It’s the news that no-one wants to hear. And it’s the biggest threat to this America’s Cup. Reports coming in that a woman in New Zealand has tested positive for Covid-19, despite completing the mandatory quarantine and testing negative twice before being allowed out into the community, is a hammer blow. The possibility of a new national lockdown is being looked at in government and whether this affects top level sport is unclear. The sailing world and the legions of new fans that are glued to the broadcast of these fabulous AC75’s will be willing a positive outcome. A decision is expected on Monday.

From afar, Auckland is paradise city. Its population living a life that most in the rest of the world dream of. In the AC microphones are shared on stage, handshakes are offered, crews hug each other after wins and console after loss. Teams work collaboratively in small office spaces and sheds and the America’s Cup village throngs with spectators lounging around the big screens to support their crew, supping a beer whilst the kids scream adorned in face-paint of national colours. I can’t even begin to say how alien it looks to us from afar. It’s a utopian vision and the result of progressive, organised government tackling the situation head-on in typical Kiwi fashion. In short, I would love to be there. And I hope, beyond hopes, that the latest outbreak is contained rapidly - you don’t want the alternative.

Wight Vodka Best Sailors Bar
Wight Vodka Best Sailors Bar We have a horse race now... between the Columbia Yacht Club in Chicago and Jost Van Dyke's famed Soggy Dollar (winner of the Wight Vodka Best Bar in 2010). Nearly 2000 votes for each, a seesaw battle with some VERY dedicated patrons.

This note from Bruce Donath:

The Painkiller, invented at the Soggy Dollar Bar in the early 1970’s is a secret mix plus dark rum. Very popular.

During a visit in the early 90’s we experimented and substituted the rum with a flavored vodka….lemon flavored, I believe.

A nice, light version of the Painkiller! Over the course of time, there are variations made with flavored rums (now available)

When visiting the Soggy Dollar, ask the bartender to offer one of the alternatives they now offer (like the Banana Bender) or come up with your own special surprise.

We found tequila was not a good choice, however, unless someone else was paying. Carpe Diem !

Here's one version of the Banana Bender:

Ingredients:
3 parts Cointreau
3 parts Banana Liqueur
3 parts Pineapple Juice
3 parts Cream
1/2 Banana Ice

Mixture:
1. Pour all ingredients in a blender.
2. Blend and pour into a Pina colada glass.
3. Garnish with a candy banana and a Maraschino cherry. 4. Serve.

Voting continues this week until end of day Friday. Our winner will be announced on Monday February 1.

The Ocean Cruising Club Announces Awards for 2020
Devon, UK: Despite a pandemic raging throughout the year, the OCC Awards Subcommittee has found numerous achievements to recognize in the cruising world. Nominations are made by Full Members of the OCC, winners are selected by a highly experienced team of bluewater cruisers, and selections are approved by the OCC General Committee.

The Club’s premier award, The OCC Barton Cup, which salutes an exceptional or challenging voyage or series of voyages, goes to Bert ter Hart, s/v Seaburban. This non-stop, unsponsored, solo circumnavigation via the five Capes was conducted entirely without the use of GPS or other electronic aids to navigation. The seven-month voyage is believed to be a world record for the longest duration in quarantine during the COVID-19 pandemic. Bert's navigational skill and seamanship set a magnificent example to all distance sailors. Bert was the recipient of an OCC Challenge Grant which was instituted to help support particularly adventurous or environmentally conscious endeavours.

The OCC Award has two components - one rewards members who contribute valuable services to the OCC and the other for anyone who contributes extraordinary service to the cruising community at large. This year, the OCC Award recognises a group of members who collectively provided immensely valuable services to both members and the cruising community as a whole in response to the novel Coronavirus pandemic.

- Vice Commodore Daria Blackwell
- Regional Rear Commodore Alex Blackwell
- Regional Rear Commodore Moira Bentzel
- Member Tim Goodyear
- Global Network Support Coordinator Fiona Jones
- Roving Rear Commodore Guy Chester

The OCC Seamanship Award goes to OCC member Garry Crothers of Northern Ireland.

The OCC Lifetime Cruising Award 2020 is presented to Nick Skeates, a true cruiser’s cruiser. visibility.

The Vasey Vase recognises "an unusual or exploratory voyage made by an OCC member or members" and, in an age of speedy circumnavigations, often in the higher latitudes and frequently in pursuit of a place in the record books, Graham and Avril Johnson’s 18-year voyage is ‘unusual’ and certainly merits this award.

Additional awards presented, the details of which can be found on the OCC website, include:

- OCC Jester Award to Jack van Ommen
- OCC Qualifier’s Mug to Sasa Fegic
- OCC Water Music Trophy to Kirk Patterson
- OCC Port Officer Service Award to Victor Langerwerf (Curacao) and Peter Cafe Sport (Horta, Azores)
- OCC David Wallis Trophy to Dag and Thresa Holland

The organisers of boot Düsseldorf have just announced the cancellation of this year’s event.

Billed as the largest indoor boat show in the world, boot Düsseldorf 2021 was originally due to take place in January but was rescheduled to 17th-23rd April due to rising Covid infection rates in Germany.

Show director Petros Michelidakis says: ”We are extremely disappointed not to be able to hold this year’s show but conditions have conspired against us and we have had to take into account the safety of our exhibitors, visitors and staff.

”We will be back working on boot 2022 soon and you can be sure that it will be a very strong exhibition as the industry and the market recovers from the pandemic. Physical shows are the best way for customers to really interact with exhibitors and to experience their products in an exciting and inspirational setting.”
