West Coast Teams Take the Early Lead at Race Week at Newport presented by Rolex
The Pacific Yankee team dominated the Melges IC37 Winter Series in Fort Lauderdale in late 2019 and early 2020, the last class racing before today. Today they picked up right where they left off with a pair of firsts in the first three races today. A slight bobble, a sixth, in the fourth and final race of the day allowed Chris Culver’s Blazer II team to pull level at the head of the pack, with 2019 National Champion Members Only in third, three points behind.
David Team’s crew on the TP52 Vesper found themselves in a slightly similar situation when the breeze exceeded their expectations for the day.
“We did well today because our crew did a terrific job changing gears, constantly working the boat, and we had fantastic tactical calls from Brad Rodi,” says Ruh. “It just all came together for us.”
With just one main and one jib for all conditions, changing gears on the Melges IC37, says Ruh, is more challenging that on a boat that might carry three or four headsails for different wind speeds.

The second race in breeze was a little bit of a struggle with the lighter jib, but we persevered. We had some interesting starts in races 2 and 3, but were able to stay focused and sailing hard, and enjoy trading tacks with everybody, especially Victor Wild’s Pac52 Fox. All the boats seemed very well sailed.”

Team and his crew won the first and third races of the day and finished second in the middle contest. But Wild’s crew is just two points behind after three races. And you never want to count out Hap Fauth’s Bella Mente, especially if the racing transitions from inside the bay to offshore later in the week. Fauth and team sit in third, seven points out of first.
The third class, ORC 2, featured some of the closest racing of the day. Tom Sutton’s Leading Edge won the second race by a single second over Cory Sertl’s Das Blau Max. In the third race, it was New York Yacht Club Rear Commodore Paul Zabetakis’ Swan 42 Impetuous taking the win by five second over Leading Edge. With a win in the first race, as well, Leading Edge is living up to its name in the overall standings, two points ahead of Impetuous and seven points ahead of Das Blau Max. With three days of racing remaining, however, no lead is safe in this class where five of eight boats finished a race in the top 3 on Day 1.

Robline is official partner of the European Sailing Championships
The European championships of the 49er, 49erFX and Nacra 17 classes will be held from September 28th to October 4th, 2020 in the Union-Yacht-Club Attersee (UYCAs). The three Olympic boat classes will hold their title fights in Austria for the first time.
December 2019 and February 2020 the world championships of the three classes took place in New Zealand and Australia, now the top athletes are coming to the Attersee. The Austrian Sailing Association is already qualified in the 49er, 49erFX and Nacra 17 for the Olympic Games, which will take place in Tokyo from July 23 to August 8, 2021. The whole Robline Team will be on site to experience this major event next week.
Melges 32 World League in Scarlino
After a weekend of racing in Portovenere for the Melges 20 and Melges 14, it is now time for the Melges 32 to return to racing for the third act of the international Melges World League circuit.
The three days of regattas organized by Melges Europe with the support of Club Nautico Scarlino drew all the top teams of the Melges 32 Class to the starting line. The newly proclaimed World Champions on Caipirinha by Martin Rentjes will compete for the title of the third seasonal event. This Italian crew, not more than a month ago, in Villasimius won the world title held up to that moment by the crew of La Pericolosa of Christian Schwoerer, also present in Scarlino, as well as many other boats that boast years of experience in Melges 32 fleet. Among the participants we find in fact Fra Martina by Edoardo and Vanni Pavesio, G-Spot of Giangiacomo Serena di Lapigio and the Corinthian World Champions aboard Homanit, just to name a few.
Directly from the Melges 20 fleet, a new crew arrives among the Melges 32, Russian Bogatyrs by Igor Rytov: the Russian crew, which in reduced formation has already collected a long trail of successes in the Melges 20 Class, will compete for the first time in Scarlino with the competitive Melges 32 fleet.
The regattas will start Thursday, September 24, at 12.00: it promises to be an intense weekend, with challenging weather conditions.
RYA GBR eSailing National Champion crowned
Following six months of online racing and over 9,000 sailors battling it out for a place in the final, 16 of the UK’s very best esailors took to the virtual waters on Saturday 19 September to battle it out of the title of GBR eSailing National Champion 2020.
After five closely fought races it was Alasdair Ireland, sailing under the sail name of Speedy_1, from the Royal Northern & Clyde Yacht Club, representing Scotland, who raced his way to victory and the championship title.
The final consisted of five races, with two discards. In each race the competitors sailed in a different class of boat, to really test their skills. Live commentary was provided by Olympic silver medallist and British Sailing Team 49er sailor, Stuart Bithell and RYA Regional Development Officer, Susie Moore.

The Gstaad Yacht Club announces postponement of the 10th Centenary Trophy to 2021
The Swiss Club has taken the tough decision to move forward the 10th edition of the Gstaad Yacht Club Centenary Trophy, the regatta dedicated to boats one hundred years and more of age that over the years has become a true tradition for the best centenarian sailing yachts in the Mediterranean.
The event, was originally scheduled for October 1st, on the “challenges day” at the Voiles de Saint-Tropez but after broad internal discussions with a heavy heart, the Club’s Board came to the conclusion that the wisest option was to postpone to 2021 the 10th edition of the Centenary Trophy, and the big celebrations that were planned. The quarantine measures in place between France and Switzerland do not allow the organisers this year to ensure the smooth running of this race, which has had to be written out of the programme.
“We stand by the people who suffered for this pandemic, that has been affecting us all. Everyone at the Gstaad Yacht Club is saddened to make such an announcement. We have been working hard to make our event happen. But as it comes at sea, sometimes you have to reduce sail and wait for the storm to pass.” Said GYC’s Commodore Manrico Iachia.

Making life on board bearable
In the first of a series of preview articles in the lead-up to the Vendée Globe start on November 8, Ed Gorman looks at the issue of comfort - and discomfort - on board an IMOCA.
The IMOCA fleet has a deserved reputation for exceptional performance, for spectacular displays of awesome speed and power, but it also for being made up of some of the most hostile racing platforms ever used in world sailing.
Even before the advent of foiling, the wide and flat hull form and super-light carbon hulls of the IMOCA boats were making them extremely uncomfortable, especially going upwind and racing in the breeze. The foiling revolution has only made the violent, noisy and wet experience on board even more difficult for their lone skippers.
Britain’s Sam Davies, skipper of Initiatives Coeur, says that when outsiders sail on her boat it reminds her that IMOCA sailors have got used to conditions on board that few others would tolerate. “It seems to be that the boats are very unbearable for anyone other than IMOCA skippers,” she said.
So what have her fellow Vendée Globe competitors been doing to try to make life on board a bit more comfortable as they prepare for more that 70 days alone around the world and some of the worst weather the planet has to offer?
Boris Herrmann says the most important change he and his team have made on SeaExplorer-Yacht Club de Monaco since her Gitana days has been the addition of a “pilot seat” that sits sideways to the boat’s fore an aft axis and can tilt as the boat heels.

The brand new Arkema 4 was launched in the water this morning outside the Lalou Multi Composite shipyard in Port Bloc in the Gironde region, after one year of painstaking work. This Multi50 is the result of close and intense technical collaboration between the Arkema Group and Lalou Multi, partners for now 8 years. With recyclable resins, new adhesives, clean energy... many innovative materials and technical solutions complement bold architectural choices. Adorned with blue and grey with a touch of red, the new Multi50 is now ready in the run-up to the initial tests and a swift and efficient handover, thanks to a busy and varied sports program.
Although the construction of Arkema 4 began a year ago, the thinking behind its architecture goes much further back. Drawing on the experience of Arkema 1, naval architect Romaric Neyhousser has designed a more versatile Multi50, capable of course of excelling in solo offshore events but also racing between the buoys at Grands Prix, a major part of a Multi50 season. Looking down from the quayside, the care taken to limit the aerodynamic drag (integration of fittings, fairings and aero tarps) is obvious, but the most innovative part is to be found in the large cockpit. It is made of composite material that includes recycled Elium® resin, an Arkema innovation, and was assembled with Bostik acrylic glues, compatible with recycling. Flanked behind the X-shaped outriggers, it allows the crew to maneuver while protected, and helps lower the center of gravity. The deckhouse, which can be removed for Grand Prix, offers outstanding protection in solo racing. With their scratchproof and water-repellent coating, the cockpit’s many glazing panes are made of PMMA or “acrylic glass” - also recyclable -, which is ultralight and particularly impact-resistant; the brand new ShieldUp® Flex® flexible sheeting used for this glazing does away with the need for the thermoforming processing stage.

The "Race" version
The maximum beam of over four metres is essential to maximise the stability of shape and to enhance performances during regattas, thanks to the possibility to equip the deck with six winches. The carbon sail plan is made even more effective by the positioning of the mast further to the rear, to allow a greater sail area for the bow sails, making the boat more agile in coming out of turns. A large fore triangle also allows to make the best use of rollable sails.
Transverse rails can be mounted on request to regulate the jib lead at any manoeuvre of the boat.

Floki 650. A prototype Mini 6.50 more ecological and open to amateur construction
A boat that is easy to build and manage, accessible to all, made mainly from recyclable materials and capable of crossing the Atlantic on a race. This is the bet that the architect Antoine Mainfray has launched, who hopes to be at the helm of his 6.50 for the Mini-Transat 2023. In the meantime, the plans for this prototype are for sale. Its architect explains the project to us.
Arcona Yachts has launched its latest model, the Arcona 385, said to be a quick, lightweight and easy-to-manage family performance cruiser.
The new exterior styling of the 38ft yacht provides increased natural light in the saloon and galley owing to the new larger hull and coach roof windows. There is also a larger instrument panel above the companionway to incorporate the instruments for the helm. The side decks are wide and the cockpit is spacious, with twin carbon wheels and the table recessed into the cockpit floor.
Using the latest materials and advanced techniques the Arcona 385’s lay-up, which incorporates a 20mm Divinycell foam core, employs the latest vacuum infusion technology. All bulkheads are bonded to the hull and deck for added strength. At the heart of the boat is the galvanised steel cradle, taking the dynamic loads of rig, mast, and keel, ensuring that the boat is strong, stiff and responsive.
