New York Yacht Club Moves 166th Annual Regatta to October
The New York Yacht Club's plan to re-start the 2020 sailing season on August 28 to 30 with the 166th edition of the Annual Regatta was stymied by an uptick of COVID-19 cases in Rhode Island and the resulting uncertainty regarding possible quarantine restrictions imposed by neighboring states upon anyone spending more than 24 hours in the Ocean State. But, determined to exhaust every opportunity to get sailors on the water this season, the Club has pivoted once again, moving the Annual Regatta to the first weekend in October where it will include the Melges IC37 National Championship, which was originally scheduled for those dates.

The Annual Regatta, North America's oldest regular sailing competition, was first run in 1846, and has been sailed on an annual basis since, with the occasional pause for national or global crises. The last time the Annual Regatta was canceled was 1968, due to the Presidential and Gubernatorial decrees of mourning that followed the assassination of Senator Robert F. Kennedy on June 6, 1968. There was no Annual Regatta scheduled in 1943 through 1945, due to World War II; 1917 through 1920, due to World War I and the 1918 influenza pandemic; or 1898, when the United States was engaged in the Spanish-American War.

Since the Club acquired its Harbour Court Clubhouse overlooking Newport Harbor, the Annual Regatta has been a fixture at the start of the Rhode Island sailing season, usually taking place the first or second weekend in June. But unique times demand creative solutions. So for 2020, it'll be the last regatta of the summer season. And it will include some smaller one-design classes not traditionally invited to the Annual Regatta, specifically Sonars, Stars and Shields.

The other remaining events on the Club's regatta calendar - Race Week at Newport presented by Rolex (September 23 to 26) and the Queen's Cup (September 27) - remain as scheduled. There will be no on-shore social activity for any of the Club's 2020 regattas. -- Stuart Streuli

Landsail Tyres J-Cup
The 2020 Landsail Tyres J-Cup has attracted nearly 40 teams so far, for the 21st birthday of the regatta exclusive to the J Boats family. Organised by the Royal Ocean Racing Club, by invitation of Key Yachting, eight races are scheduled in The Solent over three days (03-05 September). The 2020 Landsail Tyres J-Cup is a celebration of racing designed for all J Boats, no matter the level of experience or ability.

The 2020 Landsail Tyres J-Cup will feature one-design racing for at least three classes and IRC Racing Classes for mixed fleets. There will be both windward leeward courses and round the cans racing.

Seven different J Boat designs are set to race with results decided by IRC time correction. This allows fair racing for J Boats not racing in one design classes. Nine teams are currently entered under IRC, including the 2018 J-Cup winner J/112E Davanti Tyres, skippered by Chaz Ivill.

Eleven J/70 teams from all over the UK have entered, including Paul Ward's reigning J/70 Open World Champion; Eat, Sleep, J Repeat. Last year's Cowes Week winner, Jolt steered by Tilly Harrison and Charles Thompson's Primo Cup winner Brutus, will also be in action.

The most coveted award at the Landsail Tyres J-Cup is the J-Cup itself, which will be awarded at the Prize Giving Dinner on Saturday 5th September. For on-line entry and the Notice of Race visit: www.j-cup.co.uk

A dog that went missing after falling overboard from a boat off the coast of Falmouth and St Mawes has been found in an incredible chance discovery by two kayakers.

Earlier today owner Wayne Booth appealed for help finding his short-haired border collie Toobs - also known as Joanah - who he thought could have swum to shore after ending up in the water off St Mawes.

Despite a huge police and coastguard search on land and sea - including thermal imaging - going on until the early hours of this morning, nothing had been found.

Meanwhile cousins Harry Homer and Xander Meredith, both aged 19 and at the start of their holiday from Warwickshire were kayaking around St Mawes - and discovered a dog hiding in a cave near the lighthouse only accessible by water.

Unbeknown to them they had chanced upon missing Toobs, who had managed to swim more than two and a half miles from where she went missing, according to the boat's navigation system, before finding the cave to rest in.

They phoned their dad, who came round to pick up Toobs on his boat and take her to the safety of shore and put up a post on Facebook - leading to an emotional reunion with Wayne at St Mawes, followed by many victory drinks at the Victory Inn for her rescuers this afternoon.

Wayne, who lives with ten-year-old Toobs on a boat just off Falmouth's Prince of Wales Pier, told the Packet: "It's absolutely amazing. They're really nice lads as well.

"The greatest of thanks to them. If it wasn't for them just adventuring in to that cave we might never have found her.

Despite her advancing years, Wayne described Toobs as a "fast and fit dog" who is actually a champion in bikejör - similar to dog sledding but using mountain bikes.

Cowes Harbour Commission (CHC) launched a public consultation this summer to ascertain stakeholders' initial views about a potential combining of CHC with Cowes Town Waterfront Trust (CTWT) and a possible application to the Charity Commission, among other proposals. The initial deadline for public comment was 3rd August 2020 and a large amount of feedback has been received, including a general request for more information.

CHC would like to thank everyone for their feedback to date, sent in individually, via groups or through the CHAC (Cowes Harbour Advisory Committee). After careful consideration of all comments received, the Commissioners agreed at a Board meeting on 12th August to suspend further public consultation, allowing time for detailed consideration of the views received. As a Trust Port, CHC has a duty to ensure all stakeholders have sufficient time to give their views during a consultation and originally, an extension to October was granted to enable further public comment. The Commissioners will now suspend the consultation and will review the position in 2021 based on the situation at the time, with a possibility of restarting the public consultation.

The priority for CHC is the safety of the harbour, however the publically stated vision of CHC includes 'for Cowes Harbour and the River Medina to fulfil their potential in delivering first-class port facilities and leisure services'. To enable this, CHC undertakes commercial activities in order to be self-financing, as is expected of Trust Ports, and any surplus funds raised through its activities are reinvested back into the harbour and its facilities, to the benefit of its harbour users, or 'stakeholders'.

The annual Sea-Ex exhibition in the Philippines, due to have been held at the Pasay City SMX Convention Centre in October this year, has been postponed until May or October 2021.

The organisers Headsail Inc/Sea-Ex are expected to announce the new dates later this year.

British Marine's alternative boat show will go ahead in September.

The organisation has confirmed that subject to last minute changes in the Covid-19 regulations, Boats 2020 presented by Southampton International Boat Show, will be held at Mayflower Park, Southampton, from September 11 - 20 2020.

The not-for-profit event will take the form of an outdoor and on the water show, with organisers keen to stress the health, safety and security of exhibitors, visitors and colleagues will be the number one priority.

Tickets will be limited and BM will be monitoring and responding to any last-minute changes in the ever-evolving health situation. Visitors, exhibitors and event staff will have to comply with all the latest public health advice.

Exhibitors must commit to the event by August 7 in order for the marina to be built and other operational details to be fulfilled.

To date 78 boats from 30 brands including Princess Yachts, are confirmed, alongside more than 40 land-based exhibitors of related marine equipment.

A few years ago, he bought the rights to the Trintella brand - a chic Dutch cruiser, popular in the 2nd half of the 20th century. Its revival is not going unnoticed. Designer Germán Frers has drawn 2 new, high-end weekender models: the 11.5m Trintella-45 and Trintella-50 (15.2m) that ooze a classic style and timeless elegance.

Trintella 50
The Trintella is returning with might and main, as a "true gentleman's yacht brand," says Doomerik. The brand's original builder, Anne Wever, showed the first boat at the 1959 HISWA Amsterdam Boat Show. "Wever truly inspired me," Doomerik says today. "I interned at his yard and later rented a mast shed from him."

The Trintella shipyard closed down in 2002, a sad end for a much cherished brand associated with quality. "Long ago, I decided I wanted to buy the brand as soon as it became available," says Doomerik. "And that happened a few years back when I also wanted to build the ultimate cruising yacht. I could have done that under my name, but the Trintella brand name deserves to live on."

Two Solbian solar panels are integrated into the aft Lignia Yacht deck and colour match the hull so they blend with the style of the yacht. The panels charge Oceanvolt 48VDC batteries (total capacity 30.4kWh, made up of x16 1.9kWh batteries), which power her Oceanvolt ServoProp15 sail drive.

Spirit Yachts has worked with OneSails GBR (East) to develop a solar solution for the Spirit 44E's sail wardrobe.

John Parker from OneSails GBR (East) explained, "We have collaborated with Solar Cloth System to integrate thin cell PV panels into the yacht's 4T FORTE™ main sail as a source of electrical generation."

John continued, "Due to the high modulus construction of the 4T FORTE™ composite material, the impact of the PV panels will be minimal in terms of the sail's characteristics and performance. The technology is cutting edge and to my knowledge it is first project of its kind in the UK."

OneSails' 4T FORTE™ sails are currently the only sails on the market made from a cloth that can be stripped of its hardware and recycled at commercial recycling plants.

Brooklin Boat Yard launched RASCAL, a 50-foot custom-built cold-molded sloop designed by Jim Taylor, on July 29, 2020.

The Jim Taylor-designed, racing / cruising sloop draws its lineage directly from previous Jim Taylor 49-footers DREADNOUGHT and BLACKFISH. To make RASCAL easy to handle, she has a well laid out cockpit with all sail control lines close at hand, all powered winches, electrically powered traveler, and a Bamar mainsail in-boom furling system. The spar and rig package is from Offshore Spars and the sail package is by North Sails. All these elements came together in time for RASCAL to be on the Eggemoggin Reach Regatta starting line raring to go against a very hotly contested Spirit of Tradition Class.

RASCAL got a good start by avoiding a hole that developed about mid-line to the committee-boat end and proceeded to increase her lead from there. The boats that took a little longer getting going at the start were treated to a great tacking duel between RASCAL and the BBY-built 55-foot OUTLIER as they made their way out of the Reach. Everyone on the water was impressed at how well RASCAL was holding her own against the Botin Partners-designed racing machine.

At the end of the day it was RASCAL who took first place in the Spirit of Tradition Class on corrected time besting a ten-boat fleet, of which nine had been built by Brooklin Boat Yard.
