Beyou wins Vendee-Arctique-Les Sables d'Olonne Race

After one of the most thrilling battles in the history of the IMOCA Class, Jeremie Beyou at the helm of Charal this evening sailed across the finish line to win the hotly-contested Vendee-Arctique-Les Sables d'Olonne Race.
Beyou reached the line after a dramatic final 550-nautical mile final leg from the Gallimard Waypoint, which saw him overtake Charlie Dalin on Apivia who was first at the waypoint, to take what looked like a firm lead.
However this remarkable race - one of the closest, if not the closest in IMOCA history - still had a last twist and turn as Thomas Ruyant on LinkedOut stormed up from behind Dalin to overtake both him and Beyou.
But in the deep reaching and downwind conditions and the powered-up northerly breeze, Beyou managed to press forward again to re-take the lead as he closed the French coast.
By the finish he was well clear of Dalin who finished in second place 50 minutes after Beyou, while Ruyant had to settle for third, another 20 minutes back.
It was fitting that at the end of this "warm-up" for the 2020 Vendee Globe, Beyou should cross the same finish line that will be used for the round-the-world classic in 2021. After he did so he stood on the foredeck of Charal with his hands aloft in celebration. -- Ed Gorman
UK Sport denies Olympians were used as 'guinea pigs'
UK Sport has resolutely refuted any accusation that (2012) Olympians were used as 'guinea pigs', and finds this allegation both misleading and offensive.
UK Sport issued a statement after reports of the early use of a drink containing a snythetic version of ketone body acids in the 'Ketone Ester research and innovation project', were published in the Mail on Sunday.
The article claimed that a total of 91 British competitors from eight sports signed agreements to stay quiet about their early use of the DeltaG® drink containing a snythetic version of ketone body acids in 2012.
The RYA has confirmed that two British Sailing Team athletes were involved in the early stages to establish proof of concept but both withdrew due to side effects, and neither were using the product in the run up to or during the London Games.
The supplement, developed by Oxford University scientists was supplied to British Olympic hopefuls in early 2012.
At the time UK Sport knew that ketone ester was not approved by WADA, but it was not specifically banned at the time.
Ketone had been tested since 2008, three years before the UK Sport funded research project.
DeltaG®, retailed as the world's first commercially available Ketone Ester, became available in 2018.
Adria Sail / Scuderia 65 - by Harry Miesbauer
First Sea Trials
The Scuderia 65 designed by Harry Miesbauer has carried out its first sea trials in racing configuration.
last 16 June. The new 65ft fully IRC optimised full carbon racer/cruiser was launched last autumn. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic the crew, headed by OneSails CEO Dede De Luca, had to wait quite a while before they could hoist the new 3rd generation OneSails 4T Forte racing sail set.
The full set of sails was produced at the OneSails Nord Est loft in Verona/Italy where the sail design was done by Dede De Luca and Samuele Nicolettis in close collaboration with Harry Miesbauer to optimise the sail plan for long distance races under the IRC rules.
The first outing with the racing sails was very promising and showed that the boat has its potential as it was foreseen on paper. All systems worked very well, which means that the meticulous attention to details in the design and building period by the Harry Miesbauer Yacht Design studio and the project manager Aldo Scuderi has paid off. it also shows that the yard, Adria Sail, and the suppliers like Cariboni and Harken have done an excellent job.
Right now, the first regattas scheduled are the Barcolana in Trieste and the Rolex Middle Sea Race in Malta next October.

Optimist World Championship 2020 postponed
Given the current situation of the Covid-19 Pandemic, the International Optimist Dinghy Association, in agreement with the Organizing Committee of the 2020 Optimist World Championship, scheduled from July 1st to 11th in Riva del Garda (Italy) has decided to postpone the event until a later date.
The continuous changes of the current international emergency have not yet allowed to identificate a certain date in which to place this important event organized by Fraglia Vela Riva, Italian Optimist Class Association, Riva del Garda Fierecongressi and Garda Trentino. The event is expected to gather in Italy over three hundred young athletes from all corners of the planet.
It goes without saying that the Organizing Committee is monitoring the situation on a daily basis and reserves the right to officially communicate the new dates as soon as the health situation allows to make a concrete point of the situation.
The 2020 Optimist World Championship is organized by IODA, Fraglia Vela Riva, Associazione Italiana Classe Optimist, Riva del Garda Fierecongressi, Garda Trentino SpA.
Heartbreaker wins Bayview Mac Race
The 96th Bayview Mackinac Race attracted 99 teams on July 11 to start the 204nm course up Lake Huron to Mackinac Island. Sweeping the standings was Bob Hughes Botin TP52 Heartbreaker, taking elapsed time honors in 27:55:56 while claiming the Division 1 and Overall titles.

Burnham-on-Crouch, UK: Burnham Week Ltd (BWL), the organisers of Burnham Week, confirms Burnham Week 2020 will not take place this year owing to ongoing Covid-19 virus restrictions writes Sue Pelling.
Plans for this annual, premier east coast regatta (scheduled to take place at the end of August this year) under the auspices of Royal Corinthian YC, Royal Burnham YC, and Burnham SC, are now in full swing for next year (28 August-4 September 2021).
The organisers had hoped the national and global measures in place earlier in the year to help manage the spread of the Covid-19 virus would have eased enough to allow this late season regatta to run as 'normal' as possible. However, with social gathering restrictions that would affect the spirit of the event still currently in place, BWL made a decision to put the event on hold until 2021.
Given the fact that Burnham Week is held late in the season, the decision not to run Burnham Week 2020 was held off for as long as possible.
New Dates Announced For 2021 Cowes Classics Week
The Royal London Yacht Club, organisers of Cowes Classics Week, has announced new dates for 2021 with the regatta now being held 3 - 9 July with racing from 5 July.
As previously announced, the original intention was to hold the regatta at the end of July but after reviewing the sailing calendar and seeing a slot available, the team at the Royal London felt that the tides were more favourable for the earlier dates which will have the lowest tidal range of the year. Owners could potentially take part in the Windeler Cup or the Round the Island Race on 3 July and then stay on for a week of competitive racing in the Solent at Cowes Classics Week.
The regatta usually attracts in excess of 140 entries and it is anticipated that even more will enter in 2021. With a full and varied racing programme and a busy social scene, including Cowes Classics Day on Thursday 8 July, it is hoped that many owners and their crew who have not managed to get out on the water this year will be keen to be part of the UK's largest classic yacht regatta in 2021.
Regatta Chairman, David Gower commented: We believe that bringing Cowes Classics Week forward to the week immediately following the Round the Island Race will have benefits to both events. Before finally deciding the change we took counsel from as many Class Captains as we could and found enthusiastic support. Following the disappointments of the 2020 season we are determined to make 2021 an even better regatta. The 2022 event will be 25 June to 1 July."

METSTRADE 2020, which will run from 17-19 November in Amsterdam, is still on track, according to organisers the RAI, who today unveiled new initiatives to ensure a safe and successful show.
A statement released to exhibitors today reads:
"We have recently listened to our visitors and exhibitors. Our recent survey among previous visitors pointed out that no less than 71% are (very) interested in visiting the show and over 1,250 exhibitors have registered so far. We are excited to see that so many have the desire to bring the industry together.
But we also understand uncertainty and we put quality above everything and looking at the longer term. Together with ICOMIA we have issued a temporary adjustment to our cancellation policy to take away any concerns. This means that companies who want to cancel their participation in METSTRADE 2020 can do so free of charge provided they commit to METSTRADE 2021 before the 1st of August 2020.
METSTRADE 2020 will be a hybrid event. Award ceremonies, presentations and panel discussions will be simultaneously available online. In addition, METSTRADE will offer the opportunity to virtually join exhibitors and visitors present in the RAI with online matchmaking tools. This way we will engage those who were forced to stay at home, so that they can also be part of this year's METSTRADE."

Italian superyacht builder Sanlorenzo SpA has announced consolidated preliminary results for the six months ended 30 June 2020, with adjusted EBITDA of around €25m - roughly in line with the same time last year. Its financial position, however, is between €24m and €26m, representing a significant improvement compared to €61m as at 31 March 2020 (or €9m as at 31 December 2019 following its IPO on the Milan stock exchange).
Sanlorenzo's order backlog for the peiod is expected at approximately €566m, representing a €65m increase compared to €501m as at 31 March 2020 (€568m as at 30 June 2019).
In particular, the backlog as at 30 June 2020 covers approximately 90% of 'Net Revenues New Yachts' expected in 2020 - substantially in line with 2019 and approximately 35% of 'Net Revenues New Yachts' expected in 2021.
The Board of Directors has called for approval of the half-year financial report and will meet on 31 August 2020, as per the financial calendar.
Meanwhile, Sanlorenzo has also announced the expiration of the exclusivity period wtih Perini Navi's majority owner, Fenix Srl, to acquire the embattled boatbuilder. Negotiations, however, are said to be still ongoing.
Sanlorenzo announced its interest in acquiring Perini Navi back in May. Fenix Srl is a company owned by the Tabacchi family and Lamberto Tacoli for the evaluation of the potential transaction.
In view of the fact that Perini Navi applied for composition with creditors under Italian bankruptcy law and that a judicial commissioner has been appointed, Sanlorenzo says it reserves the right to evaluate potential future initiatives under the procedure.

Entries are now open for the 2020 DAME Design Award.
DAME is organised by METSTRADE and RAI Amsterdam and judged by a panel of leading boat, interior and industrial designers, as well as user experts. Appointed to the chair this year is naval architect, designer and yacht racer, Andre Hoek. He replaces Birgit Schnaase, who completed her term in 2019 after her eight years of service on the DAME Jury.
The DAME Design Award at METSTRADE Show was launched in 1991 to recognise the best-designed products at the METSTRADE show. The jury also considers the expected benefit for the marine industry of the entries, as well as their suitability for intended purpose, level of innovation, cost effectiveness and environmental impact.
The closing date for applications is 18 September 2020.

British Marine made an operating loss for the year June 30 2018 - June 30 2019 of almost £280,000, down from a loss of £820,000 the previous year.
Income was £1,758,222 - this included a revaluation of land and buildings of almost £1,260,000.
Membership dropped by around 50 to 1,550.
However, the Group - consisting of BMF, National Boat Shows, Southampton Boat Show and BMF Property - made a profit after tax of £498.486 compared to a loss of £492,232 in 2018.
The profit included a fair value gain of £605,264 as a result of a revaluation of BM's investment property at Marine House that is rented to tenants.
The figures are shown in the accounts that have been circulated to members in advance of the organisation's AGM on July 15.

Groupe Beneteau is to 'significantly' scale back its production capacity over the coming months as part of its plan to meet the changing needs of the market.
The Group says it has strengthened its strategic plan for the next five months in order to be more adaptable.
The board of directors has approved the plan proposed by the executive leadership team which is based on the key pillars of a strategy built around eight global brands, a better level of efficiency for the plants and a more streamlined managerial organisation structure.
The plan also includes measures to expand its portfolio of activities to include services in tandem with its distribution networks.
The Group's future investments will be focused to a great extent on the digitalisation of its activities such as the Band of Boats transaction platform, CRM, configuration feature, connected boats and its processes.
The post-Covid 19 crisis heralds a new economic cycle. With more than €600m of shareholders' equity at the end of February and €300m of undrawn confirmed credit, further strengthened with a €120m state-backed loan and zero net debt, the Group is preparing to take on board changes in volumes, potentially on a similar scale to that seen with the 2008-2009 crisis.
In view of this, the Group is launching its Let's Go Beyond! Plan which will scale back production, while reducing all of its fixed costs.

GAC Pindar has been appointed the official logistics provider for The Ocean Race for an unprecedented third consecutive time.
The 14th edition of the epic 38,000NM Race will start in Alicante, Spain and circumnavigate the globe visiting 10 international cities, finishing in Genoa, Italy, nine months later.
GAC Pindar will provide The Ocean Race with a unique event logistics support package, tried and tested by the last two editions of the Race.
As an official partner of The Ocean Race, GAC Pindar, the marine sports, leisure and events arm of the GAC Group, will provide feasibility planning, transportation of Race Village infrastructure, broadcast and other support equipment to host cities, customs clearance, storage and relocation services for potential urgent spares, site management, on-the-ground staff and provision of site materials handling equipment. Long Hong Kit
Long Hong Kit, a Singaporean sailing pioneer and International Race Official passed away on 20 June at the age of 74.
His sailing career saw him achieve success at the 1973 and 1975 South East Asian Peninsular (SEAP) Games where he achieved a gold and bronze medal in the Fireball class. He also secured a gold medal at the 1983 South East Asian Games and competed in international events across six different classes.
Away from his competitive sailing, Long Kong Kit was appointed an International Race Official in 1989. In 1992 he was appointed an International Judge and served voluntarily at numerous international events.
In addition, he also acted as team manager and coach at major Games and events including the 1994 Asian Games in Hiroshima, Japan.
World Sailing extends its condolences and sympathy to Long Hong Kit's family and friends.
