Royal Hamilton Amateur Dinghy Club wins Wight Vodka Best Sailors Bar
Congratulations to Bermuda's RHADC for an amazing come-from-behind victory in this 11th annual competition. The final vote tally was 1632, up from just 260 (and third place) at Christmas. That club has a seriously loyal membership!

America’s Cup - Britannia takes flight in Cagliari
INEOS Team UK have settled in at their new base in Cagliari, Sardinia and have carried out their first flights.
The first America’s Cup World Series event takes place in Cagliari, Sardinia, from 23 to 26 April 2020.
This will be the first time that the defender and the three challengers have raced together (or any AC75 have raced) and will reveal who, if anyone, has designed and built a Cup winner.
Emirates Team New Zealand are expected to ship their AC75 to Europe in early March.
No news has been received on the shipping date for the New York Yacht Club American Magic AC75, while the possible fourth challenger, Stars & Stripes, now seems unlikely to compete at Cagliari. -- Gerald New, Sailweb
Something for Everyone! Sail in the St. Thomas International Regatta (STIR)
The ‘Friendliest Regatta in the Caribbean’, STIR 2020 set for March 27-29, is the most welcoming too! There’s something for everyone. This year, organizers are adding a PHRF-rated class with racing on March 28 and 29. “We are excited about giving local working sailors a chance to compete in an international event in their home waters via a less competitive and friendly class,” says regatta organizer, Bill Canfield.

Entries Open for Cowes Spring Classics 2020
Cowes Spring Classics organisers are delighted to announce that entries for the 2020 edition of the regatta are open. Taking place taking place over the weekend of 15 - 17 May, organisers Mary Scott-Jackson of MSJ Events and Martin Nott, a wooden boat builder, are expecting a wide range of participating yachts in 2020 with many new interested owners already making contact about how they can enter.
Due to a calendar clash (and the opportunity to race on neap tides), the racing is being organised by the Cowes Corinthian Yacht Club in 2020. CCYC have the experience and expertise and we look forward to working with them. Also new for 2020, two new classes are being introduced - a Non-Spinnaker Cruising Class racing with the main fleet but aimed at those boats with fewer crew. The other class is “racing for people who don’t like racing” with timed races - no handicaps, no stress, challenge friends with similar yachts, perfect for class associations wanting to join the regatta for fun.
The regatta will once again be based at Shepards Marina, using the historic Sugar Store as its social hub. Entries are encouraged from Cruisers and Cruiser racers, Gaff Rigged yachts and Pilot Cutters, Day Boats and Raters, Classic Metre yachts, affordable Classic Cruisers plus modern Spirit of Tradition yachts.
Co-organiser Martin Nott said: “The 2020 regatta will benefit from neap tides, making life easier for everyone, particularly the smaller boats. Cowes Spring Classics has separate classes and starts for Bermudan and Gaff rigged boats, with Bermudan yachts racing to IRC handicap and Gaffers using OGA handicap. Australian 5O5 Championship
Royal Brighton Yacht Club. Melbourne, Australia - The International 505 Class has announced that the 2020 Australian Championship will be held as part of the annual Sail Melbourne Regatta. In what is the first of many international 5O5 open events around the world in the coming year, the 2020 505 Australian Open Championship will take place January 16-21, 2020.
The 5O5 competition will be fierce and includes the multiple world champions Mike Holt and Rob Woelfel traveling across from the USA. " With an exciting season of racing all around the world coming up, the Australian Championship is a great way of escaping from our northern winter and getting great racing against the highly competitive Australian fleet"
"Its great to see overseas boats attending the Australian Nationals" said International President Michael Quirk (AUS). Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta

Industry News -- BOOT Dusseldorf
BOOT Dusseldorf is the biggest boat and water sports trade fair in the world and is the place where all of the industry meets in January every year. About 1,900 exhibitors from 71 different countries are presenting their interesting innovations, attractive new developments and maritime equipment from 18. to 26. January 2020. More than 2,100 journalists from almost 50 countries around the world will be there to report about BOOT.
Maritime art for enthusiasts in Hall 7
Following their tour of the luxury worlds, visitors can take it down a notch in Hall 7 and relax while contemplating maritime art. Large portrayals of ocean scenes, photographs of maritime motifs or creative sculptures invite visitors to linger and enjoy the works of art. One of the exhibitors is, for example, Heinke Boehnert with her artistic depiction of the Malizia Team skippered by Boris Herrmann from Hamburg, who will be on the artist’s stand to sign autographs at 16:00 on 19. January.
Hall 8a: board sport as its best in the surfing hall
Anyone who thought that board sport peaked a long time ago should take a look at Hall 8a at boot 2020. Everyone who is anyone in the boarding community is exhibiting here. Nowhere else in the world will so many boards and the athletes who use them be at one place at the same time as at the forthcoming board sports summit to kick off the twenty-twenties at the boot Dusseldorf home port.
Recreational sailing in Halls 15 to 17: sailing is the original water sport
Sailing is the original water sport! The first known picture of a ship with sails is on an Egyptian drawing from Luxor that goes back to the period around 5000 BC! Christopher Columbus would not have discovered the “New World” without sails. There is no doubt about it: sailing was the first way that people travelled along rivers and across oceans. A popular water sport that has something to offer everyone developed out of people’s passion for sailing.
From 2020 onwards, three halls in Dusseldorf are being devoted to sailing. It goes without saying that the major players in this sector will be there too: Hanse, Bavaria, Hallberg Rassy or tall ship suppliers like Oyster, CNB and Nautors Swan are coming back. Together with the manufacturers of innovative new boats, they will paint a diverse picture of a progressive sailing community with plenty of international flair. Spiced by the appearances of globally renowned sailing figures like Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, such up-and-coming young sailors as Laura Dekker with her new sailing project for young people and experts or blue water sailing experts like Sönke Roever in the “Sailing Center”, the sailing halls reflect a lively and very emotional community. In co-operation with its media partner, the German publisher SVG Verlag, boot is launching the “start sailing” campaign (Hall 15). Newcomers and anyone else who is interested can benefit from the know-how provided by the experts here. In a casual atmosphere, young people and those who have stayed young at heart can make tremendous progress in fulfilling their dream of becoming a sailor.
For the first time, the original cup - that dates back to 1851 - from the America’s Cup presented by Prada is coming to Dusseldorf. This means that the trophy presented in the oldest sailing regatta that is still held today is travelling 18,538 kilometres from New Zealand to the city on the Rhine and will be publicising the impressive contest it represents.

The 2020 edition of the annual International Breakfast meeting (IBM) will feature the topic of sustainable boating with a focus on alternative fuels and engine systems.
The European Commission, as well as innovators from the fields of electric, hybrid and hydrogen will contribute to an exciting discussion on a key topic for the recreational boating industry.
IBM is organised by boot Dusseldorf, the world’s largest boat show and EBI, the voice of Europe’s recreational boating industry. Now in its fourth edition and growing to over 150 participants in 2019, the theme follows the cross-sectoral developments towards decarbonisation. It brings together high-level experts to provide thought leadership on a key issue for industry, governments and the wider public. It will take place on Tuesday, 21 January 2020 from 8:30 until 10:30 in the Congress Center East at boot Dusseldorf.
Topics taking centre-stage will be the European Union’s strategy towards decarbonising Europe’s industry and the ambition to develop a carbon-neutral continent in the coming decades. The alternative solutions that will be presented and discussed in IBM’s interactive format are expected to be hydrogen, hybrid and electric engines.

Clipper Ventures is set to return to boot Dusseldorf from 18-26 January 2020 for the second consecutive year and, alongside showcasing the best of the action and stories from the Clipper 2019-20 Race and sister company Hamble School of Yachting, will be focusing attention on its important and innovative collaborations with UNESCO Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) ocean data research initiatives.
This citizen-science driven project, which empowers Clipper Race Crew from all walks of life to contribute to important global scientific research, has seen four Clipper Race teams deploy data-transmitting buoys along some of the most remote latitudes of the global race route during the third, fourth and upcoming fifth leg of the competition. Gathered data will be used in two ways; to instantly generate significantly improved accuracy in weather modelling at Earth’s most remote latitudes and to generate data for long-term climate studies.
Clipper Race Commercial Director Alex Smith and Toste Tanhua, Chief Scientist and Chair of UNESCO-IOC/WMO will be discussing the project in detail on Monday 20 January - 11:30- 11:45 on the Sailing Stage in Hall 15 in a talk called CITIZEN SCIENCE: The Clipper Race and ocean health.
Clipper Race Recruitment Director and twice-circumnavigator Della Parsons and a team of former Clipper Race Crew will be sharing their stories and experiences on the Clipper Ventures stand (Hall 15/B24) and will be joined by Chris Rushton and Luke Aspden, two experts from Hamble School of Yachting - a leading UK sailing school which has over 35 years of experience in delivering the highest quality RYA tuition.

re: the passing of Johnson Wooderson
So sorry to hear about the passing of Woody. Our main sailing together was back in the Admiral's Cup in 1981 when he was my tactician, and also co-helmsman offshore. He was a major contributor to our great success that year, including winning the Admiral's Cup as part of the British team, being top boat inshore and 2nd individual boat overall, as well as RORC Yacht of the Year and Solent Points winner.
In the Fastnet Race that year, in a near flat calm finish, we had the major achievement of getting a finishing gun in Plymouth - then only given to the first two finishers on the water - in a 43 footer, beating all the maxis (then 80ft) and larger yachts across the line except for Kialoa, which was first boat home. Woody was a major force in this, both with his carefully thought out contribution to the tactics, as well as helping to keep the crew focussed and in good spirits in very difficult conditions, which made a big difference in the final phases when we were picking off larger yachts and maxis one by one in the last few miles to the finish.
We used to meet up regularly in recent years in the Classic Yacht series in the Med, and it was wonderful seeing him still performing on Cambria, as well as our enjoying frequent reminiscing!
RIP, Woody - you will always be remembered.
