Yes, we missed the Thursday issue this week. A rare event. So is a all-nighter at the ER and ICU with a friend who might not be around much longer. It sounds cliched, but it's nonetheless true: life is short, make peace with friends and foe before you lose the chance.

Augie Diaz Wins The Second Silver Star In Less Than Two Weeks
The Star North American Championship was hosted by the Toms River Yacht Club on the Barnegat Bay in New Jersey this year. Competitors included Gold Star world-champions USA's John McCausland, George Szabo and Augie Diaz, Silver star continental champions Tom as Hornos and Brian Ledbetter from the USA; favorites included Allan Terhune Jr. having grown up at the host yacht club and rock star crews from Brazil like European Champion Henry Boening, Pedro Trouche, reigning Star Sailors League finals winner and American Joshua Revkin, a North American and World Champion.

Also in attendance: five 2019 District champs including Andrew MacDonald with seasoned crew Mark Strube, Shane Zwingelberg, and Jack Jennings.

All of the competitors were challenged by day after day of 15-20 knots of breeze on the water and on-land activities at the club and with one of the sponsors - hatchet throwing with sponsors Stubby's Hatchet House.

The last day of racing, spectators witnessed three races. Having yet another day of 15-20+ breeze, it seemed like the team that could keep their boat in one piece and their heads in the game would shake out to the top of the leader board. Hornos and Revkin got tripped up with an OCS in the penultimate race, but manage to pull of a 7th place in the race. An impressive feat, but one that put them on their back foot going into the last race.

With pens and paper scribing on the film boat factoring in the single drop, it came to light that George Szabo, who had been leading the scoreboard the whole week had been slowly, but surely reeled in by Augie Diaz and his Brazilian crew Henry Boening. The two gold stars went into the last race tied on points with Tom as Hornos and Josh Revkin a mere 3 points behind. Not only was the championship on the line, but the coveted "Rooster" was as well. All week long, individual race winners signed a rooster flag, a tradition for the Barnegat Bay Yacht Racing Association. Whoever won the last race got to keep the flag and the buzz amongst the skippers of who would be so fortunate was palpable. At the first top mark of the race, John MacCausland, who'd had an up and down week with both a bullet and a breakdown, led the race with Diaz and Hornos in the mix. Szabo and crew Heatherington-Young weren't able to keep up with the scramble and ended up taking 3rd overall. Hornos and Revkin took home 2nd place and Augie Diaz with Henry Boening who with an early gybe on the downwind leg won the rooster and the overall championship. -- Ashley Love from T2PTV

Proto: four-way match, and some?
Among the 87 sailors competing in the Mini-Transat La Boulangere 2019, 22 are competing in the prototype category. Though four sailors stand out as firm favourites (Francois Jambou, Axel Trehin, Erwan Le Mene and Tanguy Bouroullec), there are also some solid outsiders and skippers sailing on 'vintage' prototypes.

The Mini 6.50 is very particular in that it is available as both a production boat, built in over ten copies, and a prototype, the majority of which are unique. Essentially, the main difference between a prototype and a production Mini is that the former is allowed to use carbon, have a canting keel, daggerboards (or foils) and a bigger mast. The 22 prototypes signed up for the Mini-Transat La Boulangere are very varied, ranging from the 260 skippered by David Kremer, launched some 20 years ago, to Tanguy Bouroullec's (the 969) brand spanking new foiler.

Four favourites: three mates in their thirties and one 'youngster'
Axel Trehin, Francois Jambou, Erwan Le Mene and Tanguy Bouroullec: without getting ahead of ourselves, we can hedge our bets on the fact that, barring successive damage, the winner of the Mini-Transat 2019 in the prototype category will be one of these four sailors. All of them are 'repeat offenders' but they have boats from different generations with different philosophies, which will make for thrilling viewing.

Three of them, Jambou, Trehin and Le Mene have all won races contested in the Atlantic in 2018 and 2019.

With his stunning foiler (the 969), Tanguy Bouroullec, 25 years of age, clearly has the means to get in the mix, even though he hasn't racked up as many miles as his direct rivals.

"Yes, there will be a four-way match. However it would be a mistake not to take into account the other competitors, who might be able to pull something out of the bag. Psychologically, the situation is more comfortable for them. They have good boats and feel less pressure as there's less expectation", Francois Jambou warns.

Certain skippers are setting sail aboard slightly dated prototypes, though they are still great machines, like that of David Kremer (260), Luca Rosetti (342), Pep Costa (431) and Nicolas Tobo (392). The latter has one of the smallest budgets in the fleet (prototype and production boats combined) and christened his 2002 Mini 6.50 "Soyouz", in relation to her age among other things. "The space capsule of the same name is old, but is still responsible for transporting the astronauts between the Earth and the ISS. Let's hope that the reliability of one transfers across to the other", says Nicolas. "I hope to finish the course without too many difficulties and, in terms of score, that I end up in the top half of the fleet. That would be a victory in itself!"

* Initially scheduled for Sunday 22 September, the start of the 22nd edition of the Mini-Transat La Boulangere has been postponed until a later date. The reasons for this are boisterous wind conditions and sea state forecast in the Bay of Biscay and offshore of Cape Finisterre. However, Sunday's festivities in La Rochelle will continue, with the 87 sailors exiting the Bassin des Chalutiers to contest a spectacular prologue.

Though the start of the first leg between La Rochelle and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has been postponed, there will still be plenty of action on Sunday. "We're still keen to put on a show for the spectators and the sailors' families and friends. As such, we're going to launch a singlehanded prologue in race conditions," confirms Denis Hugues. In this way, the sailors will still parade out of the Bassin des Chalutiers so the skippers' presentation will take place on Sunday between 10:00 hours and midday. Next up, at 14:15 hours, the 87 Mini 6.50s will cross the start line for the prologue in the bay of La Rochelle, which will likely be contested in some superb conditions with 15 to 20 knots of breeze.

Beastie Boy - Dehler 30 One Design
Dehler 30 One Design Dehler's return to its glory days of high-performance racers could not be more appropriately celebrated than with this dramatic new 30-footer from the design boards of Judel-Vrolijk

It's been a fair old while since Dehler Yachts launched its last racer-cruiser, as opposed to the cruiser-racers that have come to define the marque. Now they're at it again with a waterballasted, carbon-rigged 30ft (9m) offshore one-design that is already in production and due to launch soon after this issue of Seahorse hits the newsstands.

Readers with long memories will remember just how good Dehler used to be at this sort of thing. Their Sprinta Sport was a top IOR quartertonner back in the day and hot on its heels came a pair of impressively fast, well-engineered three-quarter tonners, the DB1 and the DB2, which won a world championship with Karl Dehler and Torsten Conradi - now managing director of Judel/Vrolijk - on board. The cruising version of the DB boats, the original Dehler 34, was an extremely successful model with 1,200 built over 10 years and is now regarded as a modern classic.

New Life for Dublin 21s as 'Naneen' is Unveiled in Kilrush
Dublin 21 Once thought impossible due to the entire seven boat fleet rotting in a County Wicklow farmyard, the first revived Dublin Bay 21 'Naneen' was revealed yesterday at Kilrush Boatyard in County Clare.

The Hal Sisk led project has been working on the legendary Dublin Bay 21 class, the famous Mylne design of 1902-03, since late 2016.

The 21 was rebuilt by boatbuilder Steve Morris of Kilrush with assistance in later stages from Dan Mill.

Far from bringing the original and almost-mythical gaff cutter rig with jackyard topsail back to life above a traditionally-constructed hull, Sisk is content to have an attractive gunter-rigged sloop - "American gaff" some would call it - above a new laminated cold-moulded hull

Swan One Designs at the Nations Trophy
The Nations Trophy 2019 is less than a month away and has attracted the largest ever gathering of Swan One Designs, quite an achievement given all participating yachts will be in excess of 36 feet. Scheduled for the 8 - 12 October in Palma di Mallorca, some 40 Swan One Designs will take part in the event that pitches nation against nation and celebrates the attributes of real time racing.

The cream of the entry is undoubtedly the 18 ClubSwan 50s, the first time that such a number of the Finnish brand's flagship one design model have raced together. Six Swan 45s and 12 ClubSwan 42s add to the competitive mix, while the racing debut of the latest Swan One Design to be launched, the ClubSwan 36, promises to polish further an already burnished regatta.

Racing will be conducted by the Real Club Nautico de Palma, a close partner of Nautor's Swan in the delivery of its pinnacle one design regatta, but also its recently concluded The Nations Trophy Mediterranean League.

The second edition of the Nations Trophy has attracted some 14 different countries, three more than 2017. The fleet of 40 boats is 12 more than last time. Aside from The Nations Trophy itself, there are three class championships at stake: ClubSwan 50 Worlds, Swan 45 Worlds and ClubSwan 42 Europeans.

The destination of the magnificent Nations Trophy, designed in 2017 for the inaugural, biennial event by Milanese silversmiths Buccellati, will be determined by taking the two best-placed yachts from each country and combining their place-position. Yachts may be in the same class. Italy go into the competition as favourites and with a two-point advantage having secured both the 2018 and 2019 Nations Trophy Mediterranean League titles and the bonus points that followed. The 2017 trophy went to Spain, with Italy in second and Germany in third.

The class rules only allow one professional sailor and the IC37 is simple in design and easy to maintain, the boat is thrilling to sail."

The Last Word
There's a time when the operation of the machine becomes so odious - makes you so sick at heart - that you can't take part. You can't even passively take part. And you've got to put your bodies upon the gears and upon the wheels, upon the levers, upon all the apparatus, and you've got to make it stop. -- Mario Savio
