Strong Performance for Australian, Irish and Canadian Teams on Day 3 of Rolex NYYC Invitational Cup
The IC37 by Melges sailboat may be new to them, but the breezy and lumpy conditions on Rhode Island Sound for Day 3 of the Rolex New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup were old hat for the teams from Australia's Royal Sydney Yacht Club, Ireland's Royal Cork Yacht Club and the Royal Canadian Yacht Club. Those three teams shined brightest on a gloomy, overcast day that saw many crews struggle to keep their feet and their keels under them. Among those licking their wounds this evening at the mid-regatta Lobster Bake were Day 2 leader San Diego Yacht Club, which blew apart their spinnaker on the first downwind leg of the day's second race and struggled to 16th place without the crucial downwind horsepower. As a result, what was a developing blowout yesterday is now a very competitive regatta. San Diego still leads, but by just four points, while only eight points separates first from fourth.
Anthony O'Leary represented the Royal Cork Yacht Club at the first Invitational Cup in 2009, winning two of the first three races sailed in this event. He's been a fixture ever since, bringing along one or more of his three sons to each edition. For the sixth Rolex New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup, Anthony O'Leary has sons Robert and Nicholas with him and the familial dynamic in heavy air was apparent as they were one of the fastest boats on the water all day.
"It was very enjoyable, plenty of breeze," said the elder O'Leary. "It was a bit like our season at home: dull, the odd bit of rain and plenty of wind. We had a poor start to the first race because there was a lot going on and we were a bit late to get to the line. We didn't do too badly overall, we pulled ourselves back very well to get to fifth because I think we were worse than 10th at the top mark. Second race, we had a very good start and things just went right for us. We were able to sail our own race for most of it."
On the final run of the day, the Royal Cork team put on an impressive display of downwind power, turning a solid lead at the final mark into an overwhelming one by the finish. Unfortunately for the Royal Cork crew, there are no bonus points for the margin of victory in sailing. But the speed the team showed today, says O'Leary, is a good sign for the final two days.
Racing for the 2019 Rolex New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup will continue through Saturday, September 14, with a live broadcast of each race via Facebook and YouTube. Racing is scheduled to start at 11 am each day.

Jersey Regatta
The 21st Edition of the combined clubs' Jersey Regatta was held over 7th and 8th September with a mixed fleet of eighty boats racing in the beautiful surrounds of St Aubin's Bay. Alternating with Guernsey, the GBR Spinlock IRC Channel Islands Regional Championships were, again, hosted within the Jersey Regatta. With two races each day, in perfect conditions, keen competition was to the fore, particularly so with Guernsey boats Kaya II (Roger Martel's Sunfast 3600) and Glory Days (Matt Knowles & David Aslett's HB31) in serious contention.
t was to be, however, Jersey's day with Alex Ohlsson's J109, Jai Ho, taking the Class 1 crown whilst Julian Barber's Farr 727, Super Q, took the honours in Class 2, both beating the Guernsey 'cousins' by a very narrow margin.
The 22nd Edition of the Jersey Regatta is scheduled for 11th - 13th September 2020.
Celebrating the world's best sailing videos
The third edition of the Mirabaud Sailing Video Award competition is launched!
Sailing films & video professionals, as well as sailors who record their achievements during races are invited to join the 2019 edition of the event and submit their best edit.
The winners will be celebrated at the Yacht Racing Forum (Bilbao, Spain, 25-26 November 2019) alongside the sports' leading personalities from all over the world: race organisers, sponsors, class representatives, yacht clubs, teams etc. All participants are granted free access to the Forum. The winner of the main prize - the Mirabaud Sailing Video Award - will receive a prize-money offered by our partner Mirabaud.
Videos must be sent before October 23, 2019 at midnight (GMT).
The winners will be selected by an international jury according to the following criteria:

Serenaded by French naval military band - Musique des Equipage de la Flotte - the tone was set for the 14th Monaco Classic Week which celebrated American-Monegasque friendship at the end of a sunny day that saw most of the classic yachts out on the water off Cap d'Ail. Until Sunday the YCM Marina and Monaco's Port Hercule plays host to some of the world's most beautiful yachts, the throaty roar of classic motorboats following in the wake of these gaff riggers and Marconi sloops, not to mention a whole fleet of 12-foot Dinghies, an Olympic class in 1920, and full range of Metric Classes.
Monaco Classic Week is the only event of its kind to invite both classic sailing and motor boats, with nearly 130 boats in all, including 73 sailing yachts and Rivas and Chris Craft boats. All are here to revive the famous "Art de Vivre la Mer" spirit of friendship that has existed for over a century from the Mediterranean shores to the North Atlantic.
The International Schooner Association has chosen Monaco, after Capri, for the second stage of its all-new Schooner Cup Series. A dozen schooners, including Invader (1905), Puritan (1930) and Elena of London 2009 (1910 replica) are here to compete in the Schooner of the Year Trophy. Mariette, (Herreshoff 1915) was the winner in Capri ahead of Naema, the 2006 spirit of Mylne now determined to win this Act 2 in Monaco.
Located on Quai de l'Hirondelle in the heart of the YCM Marina, the Monaco Classic Week village is open to all from 9.00am to 9.00pm. Some 20 exhibitors are all linked to classic yachts: boatyards, craftsmen, marine painters, sculptors and photographers. For front row seats, YCM members can follow the racing from the pool area (Deck 2) and the Regatta Deck (Deck 6).
Finn European Masters
Bas de Waal, from the Netherlands has taken the lead at the Finn Europeans Masters after two more races were completed in Schwerin, Germany. Felipe Silva, from Portugal, dropped to second with Gerko Visser, also from The Netherlands up to third. The races were won by de Waal and Michael Maier, from Czech Republic.
The conditions were more benign than on Wednesday, dropping to 4-5 knots at some points but at other times there were enough gusts to catch out the unwary, with a few sailors testing the water temperature in Schwerin Lake. During the day the wind varied from 4 to 15 knots and everything in between, with larger shifts and more than few clouds passing overhead.
The Finn European Masters is a series of 8 races from Wednesday 11 September to Saturday 14, September. It is being sailed on Schwerin Lake in central Germany, and is organised the Schweriner Yacht Club.

Early lead for Alinghi at GC32 Riva Cup
Ernesto Bertarelli's Alinghi team showed some of their GC32 World Championship-winning form when they came out on top after the first of four days of racing at the GC32 Riva Cup, being held out of the Fraglia Vela Riva at the northern end of Italy's Lake Garda.
In today's five races, all held in the southerly Ora wind of 8 to 13 knots, the immaculate Swiss team never finished a race deeper than third and ended the day four points ahead of second-placed Red Bull Sailing Team.
The race course off Riva del Garda is famous for the dramatic cliff face and 1km tall mountains on its west shore where typically there is good pressure and shift. However the lake was in much more fickle mood once racing started after a half hour delay just after 1330, leaving the tacticians on the one design foiling catamarans truly having to earn their money.
Racing at the GC32 Riva Cup is taking place with the support of Garda Trentino, Riva del Garda Fierecongressi, Distilleria Marzadro and Omkafé and continues tomorrow with a first warning signal at 1300.

Wetsuit Outlet UK Moth Nationals
There was a marked reluctance from the fleet to launch today from the Castle Cove Sailing Club dinghy park as they looked out onto the white horses covering Portland Harbour. It was only 20 minutes before the 1pm start gun that a deluge of Moths flew to the start line, battling on the edge of control.
Under an overcast sky, the Race Officer wasted no time in getting the fleet away, knowing that the wind was forecast to increase, catching out some who waited too long on the shore.
From the off Dylan Fletcher showed why he's favourite for the event, with only the USA's Brad Funk sticking with him upwind before Dylan hit the afterburner down the run, extending throughout to take the win.
For some of the elder statesmen of the fleet it was a tough day on the water, as Ricky Tagg describes: "It was fun, it was fast, it was furious and also a bit wet at times. Unfortunately, the body was failing, but the boat failed first with a broken shroud. It should all be fine for tomorrow."
James Sainsbury documented his home-build of Valkyrie on Sail-World.com and YachtsandYachting.com last year and it's fantastic to see him now enjoying the fruits of his labour out on the racetrack:
"The boat is absolutely fantastic, solid upwind and downwind, and has some incredible pace in a straight line, logging well over 30 knots during the winter. It's quite difficult to sail with a very low boom making it a small area to get through during the manoeuvres, but I'm learning and developing new systems all the time. 5O5 Euro Cup at Hayling
Seven heats were held over 3 very different days at Hayling Island Sailing Club to complete the last leg of the 4 leg 5O5 Euro Cup Series for 2019.
Over the 3 days a wide variety of conditions challenged the strong international fleet and the experienced Hayling Island race management team. Day 1 delivered classic big wave, big wind conditions for the high quality 505 fleet with visitors from Denmark, Germany, France, Belgium and USA. The westerly winds of 22- 27 kts and steep seas were challenging conditions that 505s revel in. Multiple world champions Mike Holt and Carl Smit from California delivered a master class of heavy weather sailing to score 2 convincing bullets and lead overnight.
The 6-12kt northerly for day 2 was unstable and shifty with 40 degree shifts that shook up the results. Gains and losses were often huge but European Champions Roger Gilbert & Ben McGrane managed them best and moved into first place.
The final day was bright and sunny with an indecisive light offshore northerly wind that just could not make up its mind. In the end consistency was key with Roger Gilbert and Ben McGrane (GBR) deservedly winning overall after strong challenges from Paul Brotherton & Alain Sign (GBR) and Penny & Russell Clark (GBR) in third.

The frigate 'Shtandart' is a full-size replica of a 'man'o'war' and was the flagship of the first Russian Baltic fleet. Construction of the original was personally directed by Peter the Great following his lengthy visits to Britain over several years where he studied the building of warships at the Royal Dockyards. The original Shtandart was launched in 1703. The replica was built in St-Petersburg and launched in 1999.
The new vessel was built from the plans used for the original, and her exterior and interior faithfully recreate one of the most significant eighteenth-century ships. Shtandart is a sea-going sail training ship and with her young crew - drawn from a variety of countries, the ship has become a firm favourite at many maritime festivals around Europe.

The North Sails Golf Day 2019 will take place on November 8 at Cams Hall Estate Golf Club, Fareham.
This will be the 23rd edition of the annual event which is organised to raise money and awareness for the John Merricks Sailing Trust (JMST).
Since its inception more than 20 years ago, the event has raised more than £200,000 for the Trust whose patron is America's Cup skipper, Sir Ben Ainslie.
The objectives of JMST are to advance the education and development of young people in need within the UK and to help them achieve their maximum potential through sailing.
Registration will run from 8am and the day will include lunch and a charity auction.

UK trade association British Marine today released its latest sentiment figures on the UK leisure, superyacht and small commercial marine industry ahead of next week's Southampton International Boat Show.
According to the findings, only 22% of marine businesses in the UK reported an increase in revenue - 10% less than in November 2018 and 15% less than the pre-Brexit high five years previous.
The figures also show static profit margins for marine businesses, with just 6% of companies enjoying an increase in profits, 6% less than November 2018. Business confidence within the sector is said to be at its lowest level since autumn 2016.

The International Council of Marine Industry Associations (ICOMIA) has chosen Dubai to host next year's ICOMIA World Marinas Conference, bringing the international event to the Middle East for the very first time.
As the host city for Expo 2020, Dubai, the acknowledged marine capital of the region, is well positioned to attract the world's leisure sailing and yachting enthusiasts in the run-up to the global event which is due to open its doors in 13 months.
The ICOMIA bid was made by the entire UAE marine community through a collaborative effort that involved P&O Marinas, Bvlgari Marina, D- Marin Marinas, Dubai Marina Yacht Club, Exalto Emirates, JA Marina Dubai, Meraas, StratConn LLC and marina professionals Bruno Meier and John Paul Rebollini, supported by Dubai Maritime City Authority and Dubai Tourism.
The ICOMIA World Marinas Conference will showcase the latest in marina product development and technology. The three-day programme will be held in autumn 2020, offering the UAE's upcoming marina industry an opportunity to share expertise, innovation and technology with developed and traditional yachting markets.
