World Sailing Awards
Sarasota, Florida, USA: Carolijn Brouwer (NED) / Marie Riou (FRA) and Pavlos Kontides (CYP) were crowned female and male Rolex World Sailors of the Year as the stars of sailing were recognised at the 2018 World Sailing Awards in Sarasota, Florida, USA.

Held at the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall, eight Awards were presented. The highlight of the Awards is the Rolex World Sailor of the Year Awards and Brouwer / Riou were recognised for their success in the Volvo Ocean Race and Kontides for winning consecutive World Championship titles.

Three news Awards were introduced in 2018. Corpus Christi Yacht Club claimed the World Sailing 11th Hour Racing Sustainability Award, Dongfeng Race Team took the Team of the Year title and Ran VII - Fast 40 received the Boat of the Year Award.

Carolijn Brouwer (NED) / Marie Riou (FRA) - Female Rolex World Sailors of the Year

Events Committee Recommendations
Following the Equipment Committee’s meeting on Paris 2024 Equipment the day prior, it was the turn of the Events Committee to talk about the Events.

Events and Equipment for Paris 2024 has been a major talking point following the Mid-Year meeting where the following slate of Events was approved by World Sailing’s Council:

Men's Windsurfer
Women's Windsurfer
New Event, Mixed One-Person Dinghy
New Event, Mixed Two Person Dinghy
New Event, Mixed Kiteboard

They joined the following Events and their Equipment on the Paris 2024 slate:

Men's One Person Dinghy - Laser*
Women's One Person Dinghy - Laser Radial*
Women's Skiff - 49erFX
Men's Skiff - 49er
Mixed Two Person Multihull - Nacra 17
*subject to separate equipment re-evaluation

Although the decision was made, World Sailing’s Regulations allow both the Events and Equipment to be amended at the 2018 Annual Conference by World Sailing’s Council before ratification at the Annual General Meeting.

The Committee discussed the decision making process around selection of Events and Equipment for the Olympic Games and reiterated the Working Parties findings from the May 2018 report.

Discussions around Submission 037-18 and selecting either the Mixed One Person Dinghy Event or the Mixed Two Person Keelboat Offshore were held before a vote was held. Seven of the committee members were in favour with six against and two abstentions meaning the submission is recommended to World Sailing’s Council for approval.

Anti-Trust probe could put 2024 Olympic classes on hold
World Sailing has confirmed that it has received a request for further information from EU Anti-Trust Commission in regard to a complaint first lodged with its Italian equivalent.

One of the top European boat manufacturers, who has asked nit to be named has obtained a legal opinion to the effect that the actions of World Sailing in regard to the selection of single manufacturer one-design sailing craft are not compliant with European Union Competition Law.

The matter has now been taken away from the complainant and is being driven completely by the EU and their investigation arm, who will also determine how far the net will be spread. The first opinion includes the Youth Olympics in the same embrace as the Olympic classes. However boats are supplied at both the Youth Olympics and Youth Worlds. Both series are open entry and with supplied boats (neither criteria applies to the Summer Olympics) and certainly in the case of New Zealand trials have been held to select contestants using another class and indeed boat type.

The Commission is expected to investigate under its so-called Anti-Trust articles known in other jurisdictions as anti-monopoly or anti-competition law.

Outcomes could range from "Move along - Nothing to see here", to Olympic Sailing's Armageddon.

While the Anti-Trust provisions have been in the European Commission domain for many years, the commision has only recently decided to extend its purview into sports arena. However Sailing is also in a unique situation in that it is the only Summer Olympic sport that dictates the equipment which must by used by all competitors, and indeed that in the case of the Nacra 17, Laser, Laser Radial, RS:X the sail-away boats are all from a single supply source. With the 49er and 49erFX there are two licenced builders, but only one rig supplier.

Wight Vodka Best Sailor's Bar
Wight Vodka Best Sailor's Bar Supported by Latitude Kinsale and Seahorse magazine

As the leaves fall and the days shorten, pumpkin becomes far too common a taste, in your humble narrator's opinion. My dear wife sends me out every Sunday morning to fetch the papers and, this time of year, a half-caf, grande pumpkin spice latte with nutmeg and cinnamon. That concoction is about as far from iced cold-brew black coffee (the only proper coffee) as one can get. I don't need pumpkin spiced yogurt, cream cheese or English muffins, FFS.

But... this recipe is fast changing my mind about pumpkin. And fall.

Pumpkin Spice Shooter
1. Rim four shot glasses with honey and sprinkle with cinnamon sugar or brown sugar. Set aside.
2. In a glass measuring cup, stir together canned pumpkin, sugar, Wight Vodka, and pumpkin pie spice until combined.
3. Taste and add water as desired.
4. Pour mixture into rimmed shot glasses and top with whipped cream.

Ideally served in small mason jars (the ones with handles are perfect).

Have a few... and then put pen to paper, as it were, and tell us YOUR favorite bar.

"Redd's Pond Boatworks: Story of the Dragon"
DRAGON is a near replica of the 1882 Herreshoff steam launch #94 recently donated to the Herreshoff Marine Museum and was built in 2017 by Redd's Pond Boatworks in Marblehead, Massachusetts. Featured in an article by Stan Grayson in Woodboat issue 261 there is nothing quite like it around today. Come for the historical design of this unique vessel and stay for the tale of how an original engine survived over a century to find its way back to sea again.

Doug Park had the privilege of building DRAGON as the owner of Redd's Pond Boatworks. Growing up in Marblehead he spent a lot of time on the water and when he was 17, after a high school summer spent on board the schooner Harvey Gamage, he began an apprenticeship under Thad Danielson at Redd's Pond Boatworks. Life took him away from boats as he earned a physics degree and worked various jobs around the country until he finally decided to pursue his true calling and enrolled in the IYRS boat building restoration program in Newport, RI. Upon graduation he worked as a shipwright at Mystic Seaport until Thad offered him the opportunity to take over the business at Redd's Pond. Seven years later, Redd's Pond Boatworks is thriving with a customer-based approach to construction and restoration of power, sail, and hand powered boats.

A talk presented by Doug Park on November 15, 2018

Reception begins at 6 PM. Lecture at 7 PM.

Not so new face - Great Circle Sails
Great Circle Sails Based in Marblehead, Massachu-setts, Great Circle Sails could just be the greatest sailmaker you’ve never heard of

Technology has had a big impact on the sailmaking industry with huge gains in materials, optimisation and efficiency. Those efficiency gains extend to the buying process where Brian Hancock, the founder of Great Circle Sails, believes that yacht owners the world over can benefit.

‘Sailmaking has changed a lot over the last two decades, not only in the technology that has brought hi-tech moulded sails made from space-age fibres, but in the way sailmakers are doing business,’ says Hancock. ‘Much of the manufacturing has been centralised with large “factories” producing the product and traditional sail lofts becoming more about sales and repair than sailmaking.’

Hancock served his apprenticeship and learned the craft as a hands-onroll- the-fabric-out-and-draw-thecurves- on-with-a-pencil sailmaker at one of South Africa’s foremost lofts. He is now one of the best-known sailmakers in the world.

The Grand Slam of female sailing starts in Switzerland
The Swiss International Women’s Match starts today and the World’s best female sailors have gathered in Ascona on Lago Maggiore.

Competing in the regatta we find ISAF world ranking leader Pauline Curtois, representing France, 4th ranked Marinella Laaksonen from Finland and Danish Trine Palludan, ranked 5th. These three skippers and their teams can also be found at the top of the preliminary scoreboard of the WIM Series 2018 after the events in Helsinki (Finland), Lysekil (Sweden) and Ekatrinburg (Russia). Representing the host country is skipper Alexa Bezel and her Swiss Women Match Racing Team, currently ranked 14th.

The grand final where the best two teams meet is planned for Saturday 3rd of November.

Despite the prevailing weather conditions: torrential rain and thunder the organization remains optimistic that the competition will run according to plan and that we will see spectacular sailing on Lago Maggiore over the course of the week. Things are looking up for the final’s day, the current weather forecast predicting sunshine and the race committee predicting an exciting battle.

Groupe Beneteau has closed out FY 2017-18 with performance levels that were higher than its latest forecasts. According to a statement released yesterday, the positive results are linked to the quality of operational execution achieved in the fourth quarter for the Boat and Leisure Homes Divisions, as well as the results of the Transform to Perform plan:

Boats: business is up +9% at constant exchange rates, the fourth consecutive year of strong growth, supported by a stronger and diversified range, aligned with demand from dynamic segments

The Boat Division is reporting good performances thanks to the dynamic level of sales for the multihull sailing and outboard/inboard motorboat segments, offsetting the contraction in sales for large motor yachts. The delays with deliveries in the third quarter were effectively caught up in the fourth quarter.

Full-year revenues for the Boat business are up +9.0% year-on-year at constant exchange rates (+6.7% reported data). The Group’s performances in Europe are described as ”excellent” (+12.7% at constant exchange rates), while they show contrasting trends for North America depending on the market segments (+4.4% at constant exchange rates), with very strong progress for small boats and a contraction for large motor yachts. Sales are robust in Asia-Pacific (+27.3% at constant exchange rates) and with charter fleets (+26.8%). The Rest of the World region (-38.7% at constant exchange rates) has been affected by the lower level of sales for large motor yachts.

UK-headquartered Marina Projects Ltd has confirmed that it is involved in the large Maltese Manoel Island redevelopment project as marina designer. The project has been ongoing for some years with MIDI Plc, the consortium overseeing the huge €400m mixed-use project, which is one of the largest in the Mediterranean.

Marina Projects has been involved in the Manoel Island masterplan since 2016, working initially with Foster + Partners on the concept design and more recently being directly appointed by MIDI Plc to develop the masterplan proposals and detail design.

While the planning is still underway, it is understood that the Manoel Island Marina will offer around 320 berths for small craft up to superyachts of 100m (328ft). The investment in the marine element of the project is estimated at €25m, with construction likely to start over the next year or so.
